321 | Effective and accomplish are energeo | James 5:16 | terrib | 149250
Tim, I did a quick research on James 5:16 and looked at two lexicons. As far as I can see: Stephen's Textus Receptus (1550) does Not contain 'oun'. Wescott-Hort (1881) Does contain 'oun'. Personally, I see a great difference in using the "therefore" and connecting verses 14 and 15 with verse 16. I think is has to do with the word 'healed' since 14,15 talk about sickness, for we relate the word 'healed' to physical most of the time. Just as I don't use "By His stripes we are healed" as being physical. (Please anybody; let's not go there). Maybe you can offer more light on this for me. It really bugs me when I come across this kind of thing and I'm not satisfied until I'm satisfied. Do you know what I mean? And, no, I'm not from Missouri.:) I read from a Thompson Chain Reference Bible and the margin notes also refer to spiritual healing, understanding that he is just a man also. Do you have a preference between the two lexicons listed above? Others may say, "Ask God for help", yes, and sometimes God uses others to answer the prayer. Thanks Tim for your help! terrib |

323 | Effective and accomplish are energeo | James 5:16 | terrib | 149265
Hi Searcher, The point I was making was in verses 14-15: is there any sick call for the elders to pray and anoint with oil and the prayer of faith will save the sick and the Lord will raise him up and if he has sin it will be forgiven. That is a finished work. In verse 16 now, the Scripture tells us to pray for one another that we may be healed. This is a different situation now that we are praying for each other because, above, the elders were praying for us and anointing with oil. This is why I was concerned about the word 'therefore' in verse 16, because by using the word it connects or carries on from verse 15. And one of the two Greek lexicons I looked at does not use the word and the other does. Therefore, I stated that verse 16 starts a new thought and is not still talking about healing the physically sick as in verse 14 -15, but is now talking about offences toward a brother, a spiritual healing. Then James talks about Elijah as being just a man as we are and just how powerful prayer can be. So powerful, it can dry up the earth. Permit me to share with you a true story about effectual pray. Jim Vines, a young man that surrendered to Jesus the same time I did, was hiking in the Sierra Mountains in California. A huge boulder became dislodged and was tumbling down the edge of the mountain straight toward young Mr. Vines. He heard it's sound, turned around and the only two words that came out of his mouth was, "Jesus! - No!", and the boulder exploded right in front of him and he didn't have a scratch. If he kept his mouth shut, he would be dead. He stood up in church the next Sunday with the rest of the church group that was with him and testified of this. Well, being Pentecostal, I tell you we had a good time in the Lord. Praising and singing, no, we didn't roll on the floor. So, the effectual fervent prayer of this baby Christian did availeth much. We were so young, I don't know if we even knew about this verse. But God did! I said all that to say all this, I am settled with the answers I have been given by the forum. Thanks, terrib |

Hank, Thanks, we serve such a Wonderful God. How short the English language is. Even with all the words of the Bible our language does not come close to the majesty He deserves. We know now why Paul has said that with groanings the Spirit intercedes for us. Your posts have helped me, too! Peace and Grace to you, terrib |

Hi Kalos, Well, the old slogan is that being kalos is the best policy. I'm glad that we can share with each other and bless each other. Sometimes it is painful to pull that beam from the eye but the glory is great when we can see clearly. Blessings to you, terrib |

326 | Who are the spirits in 1 Peter 3 v 19? | 1 Pet 3:19 | terrib | 151913
Greetings Diomede, (1 Peter 3:19 KJV) By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; "By which" - Spirit, his own Divine energy and authority. "He went and preached" - By the ministry of Noah, one hundred and twenty years. "Unto the spirits in prison" - The inhabitants of the antediluvian world, who, having been disobedient, and convicted of the most flagrant transgressions against God, were sentenced by his just law to destruction. But their punishment was delayed to see if they would repent; and the long-suffering of God waited one hundred and twenty years, which were granted to them for this purpose; during which time, as criminals tried and convicted, they are represented as being in prison - detained under the arrest of Divine justice, which waited either for their repentance or the expiration of the respite, that the punishment pronounced might be inflicted. (Adam Clarke's Commentary on the Bible) (Genesis 6:3 KJV) And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. Noah, a preacher: (2 Peter 2:5 KJV) And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly; Hope this helps, terrib |

327 | Who are the spirits in 1 Peter 3 v 19? | 1 Pet 3:19 | terrib | 151956
Hi Searcher, Thanks for replying, this can be a sticking point, but let's see if we can figure this out. Genesis is a treatment of the generation of all things, of the heavens, and the earth, and all that are in them, and of the genealogy of men: it treats of the first men, of the patriarchs before the flood, and after it to the times of Joseph. It is in a chronological format. The Lord is not speaking to Noah in 6:3 but to Himself (or and) to the Heavenly Host. (Genesis 6:3 KJV) And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. (Genesis 6:4 KJV) There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. "in those days"(v4), what days, the days the Lord said these things. "also after that"(v4), "and they bare children to them", there is a time span here. (Genesis 6:5 KJV) And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. God saw the wickedness of these children, these men. And it was getting worse. And God said: (Genesis 6:7 KJV) And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. Now, after all this, enters Noah on the stage being 500 years old. The children in verse 4 had to have time to grow up to become the mighty men from the time of the Lord's proclamation. By context this had to have happened before Noah was 500 years old. You said "which is man's lifespan, which took in effect with Nahor (11:25)." These are contrary to your statement: Nahor: 29 years (11:24) plus 119 years (11:25) equals 148 years. (Genesis 11:25 KJV) And Nahor lived after he begat Terah an hundred and nineteen years, and begat sons and daughters. Terah, Nahor's son: 205 years (Genesis 11:32 KJV) And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran. Abraham lived 175 years (Genesis 25:7 KJV) And these are the days of the years of Abraham's life which he lived, an hundred threescore and fifteen years. Isaac lived 180 years (Genesis 35:28 KJV) And the days of Isaac were an hundred and fourscore years. So your premise is not correct. John Gill's Exposition on the Entire Bible: "yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years: meaning not the term of man's life, reduced to this from the length of time he lived before the flood; but this designs the space that God would give for repentance, before he proceeded to execute his vengeance on him; this is that "longsuffering of God" the apostle speaks of in the afore mentioned place, "that waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was preparing"; and so both the Targums of Onkelos and Jonathan interpret it of a space of an hundred and twenty years given them to repent: now whereas it was but an hundred years from the birth of Japheth to the flood, some think the space was shortened twenty years, because of their impenitence; but it is more probable what Jarchi observes, that this decree was made and given out twenty years before his birth, though here related, by a figure called "hysteron proteron", frequent in the Scriptures." Albert Barnes' Note on the Bible: "His days shall be an hundred and twenty years. - “His days” are the days of man, not the individual, but the race, with whom the Lord still strives. Hence, they refer to the duration, not of the life of an individual, but of the existence of the race. From this we learn that the narrative here reverts to a point of time before the birth of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, recorded in the close of the preceding passage as there were only a hundred years from their birth to the deluge. This is according to the now well-known method of Scripture, when it has two lines of events to carry on. The former narrative refers to the godly portion of mankind; this to the ungodly remnant. Not forever will the Lord strive with man; but his longsuffering will still continue for one hundred and twenty years. Meanwhile he does not leave himself or his clemency without a witness. He sent Noah with the message of warning, who preached by his voice, by his walking with God, and also by his long labor and perseverance in the building of the ark. The doomed race, however, filled up the measure of their iniquity, and when the set number of years was accomplished, the overwhelming flood came." Matthew Henry, John Wesley and more studious men agree. Peace to you, terrib |

Hi Searcher, No, it would make Noah 480 years old when God put forth the decree. Could you tell me why you say it took effect with Nahor? Yes, the experts have been wrong before, but it is hard to put down all the accumulated years of their studies. terrib |

329 | Question, exclamation or both? | 2 Pet 3:11 | terrib | 112434
I guess this would be a point of grammar. Do we take this as a question, exclamation or possibly both? Compare: KJV (2Pe 3:11) Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, (2Pe 3:12) Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? (Question mark) NASB (2Pe 3:11) Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, (2Pe 3:12) looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! Thanks Tim, I was leaning in that direction because of the "what manner" and "what sort" use in the verses. The context of the text seems a little rhetorical, exhorting us to look inside. terrib |

331 | iron sharpens iron | 2 Pet 3:18 | terrib | 116617
Dear Restored, (Pro 27:17 KJV) Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend. As a knife made of iron is sharpened by the sharpening stick, so butchers sharpen their knives. So a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend. By conversation with a friend, thus learned men sharpen one another's minds, and excite each other to learned studies. Christians sharpen one another's graces, or stir up each other to the exercise of them, and the gifts which are bestowed on them, and to love and to good works. If a knife is just used and not sharpened it soon becomes less effective in its purpose. A good friend can keep the mind sharp and alive by bringing into action thoughts that stir up the Spirit inside every man and bring each other into those places where the Holy Spirit can comfort or convict each man's mind and heart. So is the friend we have in Christ and when we befriend the Word of God, and read, the Holy Spirit can work in our hearts and minds to where we can grow from the milk of the Word to the meat of the Word. And in our maturity of the Word of God and our relationship with Him, we can sharpen those that are on the way in their walk with the Lord Jesus. Remembering, that if we take a steel knife and strike the edges together we will dent each blade and put a nick in them. So, if we follow the example of Christ, we will approach our friends not with a blunt force but with an easy stroking so as not to damage the edge of his or hers growth that the Spirit of the Lord has given. Another verse that goes along with this one is: (Pro 27:6 KJV) Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful. terrib |

332 | condemnation vs conviction | 1 John 1:9 | terrib | 152683
Greetings Noey, Welcome to the forum! Conviction is the Holy Spirit finding a fault. Condemnation is the judgement carried out for that fault. If a man is convicted of murder he will be condemned to prison or death. (1 John 1:9 KJV) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Therefore, if we repent of the convicted fault the condemnation has no power. We have been acquitted of the fault by the blood of Jesus Christ as our atonement for the fault. And, Satan, "the accuser of our brethren" (Rev 12:10), the Scripture doesn't say that he is accusing the unbelievers but the believers, so if we are having feelings of condemnation, rejoice, for Satan wouldn't be after us if we didn't belong to Christ. Thus the warfare against principalities and powers,(Eph 6:12). Plus, there is no condemnation in Christ!! (Rom 8:1) Hope this helps, terrib |

334 | Do we "will" to love? | 1 John 4:19 | terrib | 151449

335 | Do we "will" to love? | 1 John 4:19 | terrib | 151455
Hi Doc, "To come to faith in Christ one must first desire Christ, perceive and take delight in His unmatched beauty, and have a love for Him that is greater than a love of sin. Faith will never 'just happen' out of thin air but actually requires that we desire Him, for we only choose that which we most desire." This is NOT true! Did Saul (Paul) desire Christ? Maybe I am by myself in this, but I didn't desire Christ before I was saved nor until I heard the words of the Gospel. "Words are not enough", we are convinced by words. Was the world created by words (the Word)? terrib |

Hi In2Jesus, A sect or party of evil influence in early Christianity, especially in the 7 churches of Asia. Their doctrine was similar to that of Balaam, “who taught Balak to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit fornication” (Rev 2:14, Rev 2:15). Their practices were strongly condemned by John, who praised the church in Ephesus for “hating their works” (Rev 2:6), and blamed the church in Pergamum for accepting in some measure their teaching (Rev 2:15). Except that reference is probably made to their influence in the church at Thyatira also, where their leader was “the woman Jezebel, who calleth herself a prophetess” (Rev 2:20; compare Rev 2:14), no further direct information regarding them is given in Scripture. terrib |

340 | will we go thru the tribulation | Rev 3:10 | terrib | 110533
Dear uniqueone, There is much controversy on this subject. There are also other threads on this forum about tribulation. So listed below are the Scriptures in the KJV Bible that contain the word tribulation. If you study all the verses and the context into which they are given you will have a clearer understanding. I know these will help. Caution must be taken that men's books do not sway your understanding. (Deu 4:30 KJV) When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the LORD thy God, and shalt be obedient unto his voice; (Jdg 10:14 KJV) Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your tribulation. (1Sa 26:24 KJV) And, behold, as thy life was much set by this day in mine eyes, so let my life be much set by in the eyes of the LORD, and let him deliver me out of all tribulation. (Mat 13:21 KJV) Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. (Mat 24:21 KJV) For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. (Mat 24:29 KJV) Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: (Mar 13:24 KJV) But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, (Joh 16:33 KJV) These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. (Act 14:22 KJV) Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. (Rom 2:9 KJV) Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; (Rom 5:3 KJV) And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; (Rom 8:35 KJV) Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? (Rom 12:12 KJV) Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; (2Co 1:4 KJV) Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. (2Co 7:4 KJV) Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my glorying of you: I am filled with comfort, I am exceeding joyful in all our tribulation. (1Th 3:4 KJV) For verily, when we were with you, we told you before that we should suffer tribulation; even as it came to pass, and ye know. (2Th 1:6 KJV) Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you; (Rev 1:9 KJV) I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. (Rev 2:9 KJV) I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan. (Rev 2:10 KJV) Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. (Rev 2:22 KJV) Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds. (Rev 7:14 KJV) And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Peace terrib |
