2621 | Is there a difference between the two? | Bible general Archive 1 | srbaegon | 32528
Hello meekness Holy Ghost and Holy Spirit refer to the same person. Some have said that "ghost" is a better word because it more clearly shows personhood and equality in the Godhead, whereas "spirit" can mean an ethereal, mystical feeling without being a person. But for all practical purposes, "spirit" is just a more up-to-date term. Steve |

2623 | Discipleship | NT general Archive 1 | srbaegon | 32517
Hi charlottetu I'll use your numbering system to answer. i) You need to study the various aspects of the Lord's interacting with the disciples. Things to look for would include: Individual calling Group dynamics Teaching to 12 compared to public Examine inner circle (Peter, James, John) for differences. Why were they set apart? Lord's use of disciples in outreach (i.e. sending of 12 in Matt 10) and retreat following. Determining application of those findings to your own life ii) It affects the Christian in every way. The Lord dealt with the 12 as individuals (treated Peter differently than Andrew or Levi). Know the person being discipled--also, know the discipler. Does this help? Steve |

2624 | Gender-neutral NIV | Bible general Archive 1 | srbaegon | 32486
Good morning kalos I've seen this on the e-mail lists I'm subscribed to. The opinions range from "Oh, no!" to "Oh, yes!" depending on the purpose and flavor of the list. I'll be interested in seeing it, although I must admit an aversion to NIV which will surely cloud my judgement. Steve |

2625 | direction on His Majesty | Bible general Archive 1 | srbaegon | 32368
God's Majesty Hello prayer warrior, Moses was basically on the same quest, and God said, "No, because you can't bear it" (Ex 33:18-20). What Moses got was only an inkling. So, don't try too hard. There are many passages that try to describe God in His glory and majesty (Isaiah 6; Ezekiel 1-3; Revelation). It's difficult to take these in because there are so many aspects. Steve |

2626 | Church "Covenant" unbiblical? | Eph 1:23 | srbaegon | 32364
My view of Church Covenant I preface by saying we have neither had nor considered a church covenant. With that understanding I wish to make a comment. The idea of a covenant is to demonstrate to those desiring fellowship in a local church that there is an expectation of active involvement in the local body. The new person/family makes a definite statement that there is an understanding of responsibility to the saints. By affirming the covenant, one commits himself to the ministries, emphases, teachings, etc. of the body. One would say, "Shouldn't that be the case anyway?" Yes, absolutely. But the sad fact is that people don't for one reason or another. Steve |

2627 | Why do we keep curses in our lives? | NT general Archive 1 | srbaegon | 31982
Yes, sickness is a fruit of sin. No question. However, conversely, sickness cannot be considered evidence of sin (Job 2:7-10; James 5:14-15). Steve |

2628 | Why do we keep curses in our lives? | NT general Archive 1 | srbaegon | 31962
Hi Just, I'm not sure how to answer this. While the Lord Jesus did pay the penalty for sin, there is no Scripture that says He took away all sickness. And Scripture states that He took away the curse of the Law (i.e. guilt before the righteous standard of God)--Gal 3:13. Steve |

2629 | Why next in line refused to redeem Naomi | Ruth 4:5 | srbaegon | 31762
Good day! In all likelihood, the relative already had a family with children, so it was possible the inheritance that would have gone to his own children may have reverted to Ruth's instead. Steve |

2631 | Verdict on the ESV: An opinion poll.. | Ps 119:105 | srbaegon | 31568
And warm salutations in return! I have been reading and using my ESV regularly since I received it at Christmas. There are a few things I thought were incorrect (i.e. insertion of bracketed phrase in Psalm 145:13; wives instead of women in 1 Cor 11) but no glaring problems. Overall, the translators/editors worked out a good combination of literalness and readability. Steve |

2632 | "ONCE SAVED ALWAYS SAVED"!!! | Matt 22:37 | srbaegon | 30306
Context........................... To place things in context, Luke 15 has three parables which speak of lost things (sheep, coin, son) which were found. The point is that in each case there was something which was no longer in the place it belonged (lost), someone searched (shepherd; woman; God or prodigal, however you see it), was found, and lastly rejoicing over what was found. To be consistent you would need to be able to apply life/death/life to the first two parables. Steve |

2633 | Engaged and want to find a church? | Bible general Archive 1 | srbaegon | 29735
My response.................... I agree with Jensen that the man of the home is ultimately responsible for the decision of where to attend, but the discussion and decision needs to be made before the wedding. It's just one of the many, many decisions that have to be made beforehand to help the transition to married life. Steve |

2634 | which of joseph's brothers were leaders | Genesis | srbaegon | 29561
Now THAT is quite a question! Four of them stand out: Reuben - Sought to usurp his father by going into his concubine. Prevented other brothers from killing Joseph. Simeon and Levi - Taking revenge of Dinah into their own hands by killing the men of Shechem. Judah - Being willing to take Benjamin's place in Egyptian slavery. These all show leadership whether or not it was properly used. Steve |

2635 | Adam and Christ? | Bible general Archive 1 | srbaegon | 29538
Thank you................................ Thanks for clarifying. I maintain that Jesus Christ, being God in the flesh, could never have sinned. If He had the capacity to sin, He would have ceased to be God. The importance of the verse you mentioned is that He experienced what we do every day, and because He went through them, He is the perfect representative of man to God. We have assurance His intercessory work is accomplished. Steve |

2636 | Adam and Christ? | Bible general Archive 1 | srbaegon | 29389
Question and Comment................. Would you explain a bit more of what you mean by "He inhabited a body, apart from the first creation, for this body was without original sin"? Also, Jesus could not sin, and therefore not have a choice to fall. He is God. Steve |

2637 | Leviticus 19 talks about not marking you | Bible general Archive 1 | srbaegon | 29369
Hi ArtS I'll preface my remarks by letting you know I don't care about tattoos either way. I would say these verses (Lev 19) stand on their own without reference "for the dead". However, I will add that, as Ed stated, God wanted His people to be set apart. He did not want them practicing things the nations around them practice. They were to be different. Christians are to be the same way (Rom 12:1-2). How does that relate to a tattoo today? We live under grace and not law. If I may take Paul's admonition somewhat out of context-- All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything. - 1 Cor 6:12 You need to decide for yourself if it is appropriate and whether they are to remain or be removed. Ask yourself, "What is (was) my motive?" Act accordingly. Steve |

2638 | "Jehovah Rophe - our Lord and Healer"??? | Ex 15:26 | srbaegon | 29045
Partial agreement..................... I understand, now, how you were using "Spirit." There is no disagreement that "God is spirit," however I would still shy away from using it the way you have for fear of confusion (mine being a case in point). Lastly, let's not blaspheme either direction. :-) We'll both stay on a better path. Steve |

2640 | Why the judgment on Edom? | Obad 1:21 | srbaegon | 29027
So let's ask the question: Why the strict judgment on Edom? A short answer might be that Esau's contempt for his birthright and hatred for Jacob stealing the blessing continued on to his offspring even though Esau and Jacob seemed to patch things up when Jacob returned from serving Laban. This hatred would manifest itself against the nation of Israel later. Steve |
