641 | A Loving GOD Who Hates | Mal 1:3 | prayon | 59943
Greetings mbooker, Actual emotional hatred for Esau and his offspring is not the point here. The context here speaks of love as "choosing for intimate fellowship" and hate as "not choosing for intimate fellowship" in the realm of redemption. Malachi, who wrote this declaaration more than 1500 years after their death, was looking back at these two men, and by extension the nations of Israel and Edom that came from their loins rather than to the individual brothers. God chose one for divine protection and blessing and the other He left for divine judgement. Edom's judgement is further discussed in Obadiah in which Obadiah points out that the Lord's hatred was against Esau's idolatrous descendants. Hope this gives you a better understanding. prayon

643 | Can an offering be money? | Mal 3:8 | prayon | 10840
Tithes are 10 percent of your gross income. An offering is anything over and above that 10 percent. It can be money, time, or anything else you have. prayon

647 | Tithes | Mal 3:8 | prayon | 125036
Greetings Nakia, YES!!! YES!! and YES again! Malachi 3:8-12 talks about how we rob God by not bringing in our tithes and offerings into His storehouse. Many people unfortunetly believe that tithing was an OT practice and does not apply to Christians today. This couldn't be further from the truth. They believe that tithing was initiated by the law of Moses and therefore when we entered into the New Covenant tithing was done away with. Not so. Gen 14:18-21 tells us that Abram tithed during his time. 1Co 9:13 says: "Don't you realize that those who work at the temple get their food from the temple? Don't those who help at the altar get a share of what is on the altar?" What the priests were to live on was the tithes of the people (see Num 18:8-24). Tithing did not go out with the New Covenant, if it did then we wouldn't have Paul telling us in his letter to the Corinthians that we are to tithe. prayon |

648 | How does God say that we rob him? | Mal 3:9 | prayon | 52381
Greetings Johnny, We have never been released from the commandment in Malachi to tithe 10 percent. 1Cor 9:7 does not necessarily refer to only money. It can refer to time, or other things we can give also. For more information on both views please search tithing. prayon
649 | 2 Questions regarding tithing | Mal 3:10 | prayon | 141372
Greetings, Mal 3:10 says to ""Bring one-tenth of your income into the storehouse so that there may be food in my house". This is referring to your own church. Tithes are meant to be given to your home church for the support of the pastor and the church. A contribution to another ministry is just that a contribution - an offering. When we give our tithes we are to "give" them. This means we are to take our hands off the money. We no longer have any say in how they are spent. If we want to have a say in how our money is spent then we are not really taking our hands off of it. Your pastor may be spending the money in a way that you do not approve of and indeed he may be wrong in what he is doing but that is not for us to decide - that is for God to decide. If he is spending the money wrong then God will deal with him. I would tell you above all be obedient to the Word and pay your tithes then pray and ask God to either cause your pastor to "see the light" or if what the pastor is doing is God directed that he cause you and your wife to accept it. Please forgive me if I sound harsh - I really do not mean to. I say what I say in love only. prayon |

650 | Gross or Net Income/ | Mal 3:10 | prayon | 165407
Greetings emt2001 and welcome to the forum! Mal 3:10 says that we are to tithe 10 percent of our income. Our income is what we earn - before taxes. You are to tithe on your gross income. See also Deut 26:1-3; Prov 3:9-10 1Cor 9:13-14 for what tithes should be used for; 2Cor 9:6-8 for the way to tithe. Hope this helps! prayon |

651 | what if i can't pay all of my tithes? | Mal 3:10 | prayon | 172770
Greetings vocab and welcome to the forum! I have been exactly where you are at. I used to be a single parent having to make it on my own. I would like to give you a few lessons I learned the hard way... First, when I didn't pay all my tithes what I was virtually saying was I need to keep some of this money to make ends meet because I don't think you can take care of it for me... When I paid my tithes with a joyful and trusting heart like the bible says I should I found that my checkbook was never in the negative even though my calculations said it should of been. I still don't know where the money came from but I always had money in there whenever I needed something. On the flip side if say my tithes were 300.00 dollars and I only put 200.00 in sometime during the month something would come up and take that other 100.00 plus some more from me - whether it was a doctors visit, a flat tire, a house repair or many other things. And this happened every time - you would of thought I would of learned my lesson after the first couple times wouldn't you.... Malachi 3:10 says, "Bring one-tenth of your income into the storehouse so that there may be food in my house. Test me in this way," says the LORD of Armies. "See if I won't open the windows of heaven for you and flood you with blessings. Whether I think I have enough or not I pay 10 percent on any money that comes to me whether it is income or not and I am a living testimony now that what He says about flooding you with blessings is true! Place your faith in Christ and His promises. prayon |

652 | if we know somebody has a problem with | Matthew | prayon | 6191
Matt 5 is saying that if we suddenly remember that another person feels something against us we are to leave our gift at the alter and go and attempt to straighten things out with the person. If we don't we will not feel the consciousness of His pleasure in us and our gift until we have obeyed His commands first. In Matt 18 Jesus is saying that when there is hard feelings between a brother and a sister it can lead to disunity and spiritual weakness in the church. Therefore if another has wronged you or the church without cause, your work is to draw that one back to God, by love, by realizing that you too are tempted and sin. Your actions should never be to ignore but to win that person back to personal fellowship and fellowship with God. |

653 | matthew 12-43 | Matthew | prayon | 29338
Greetings Mrchadly, When you look at a verse for its meaning you must look at the entire passage to get a true meaning. This is another one of Jesus' parables. Here Jesus again raises the subject of Satan. Jesus is describing the attitude of the nation of Isreal. Verse 43 describes the reformation. Upon exile from both Egypt and Babylon, the Jews gave up all their idols made of wood and stone. The unclean spirit of idol worship had gone out of them. Verse 44, however, tells us that they had not replaced this idol worship with true worship of the living God. Verse 45 tells us that with their lives empty of worship it left plenty of room for Satan to reenter the body bringing plenty of demons with him. Their sin against God was far worse than their former sins of idolatry for now they chose to reject the very person of God Himself. We can also follow this pattern when we become saved and then don't change our life to live a life for God. Whenever we turn to Jesus or make a Godly change in our lives we must fill the void the sin left with Godly things or Satan will reclaim that empty space. prayon |

654 | Theme and Emphasis of Matt 5-7 | Matthew | prayon | 38457
Greetings, The Sermon on the Mount, that was preached to the disciples, reveals the standard of righteousness that Christ requires of all who belong to Him. It first elaborates on His new commandment to love one another. This eye opener of the true life of holiness also creates in the honest heart an awareness of coming short of the glory of God. In addition, in creates a strong desire to be righteous inside as well as on the outside. Since it is impossible to be completely righteous on the inside it drives us to Jesus where he alone can cause the "righteous requirements of the law" to be fulfilled in our lives. There is a definite relation between the Sermon on the Mount and the Ten Commandments. The Sermon on the Mount, like the Ten Commandments, is our teacher to help us recognize our need of the supernatural help of Christ. Even though the requirement of inward as well as outward righteousness is revealed throughout the OT the majority of Isrealites chose to perceive God's law as requiring only outward actions and outward ceremonies. Jesus in the sermon traces the outward act to its source and motive in the heart. prayon
655 | Who wrote the Book of Matthew? | Matthew | prayon | 39575
Greetings Aikens, Matthews gospel as Hank said was written by Matthew the former tax collector. However, it was probably written after Mark's since it takes many passages from Mark's gospel. Matthew was believed to be written about 60-70 AD since it does not mention the fall of Jerusalem. In the early church Matthew was the most read and quoted of any of the other gospels. Matthew presents Jesus as the Mighty King and emphasizes the power of Christ. it is written in the diadactic or teaching style which is why it was placed first in the bible. The allegotical comparison which was taken from Eze. 1:10 is that of the lion. Each of the four gospels give one of the four aspects of "the Branch" according to old testament prophesies. Matthew uses Jeremaih 23:5-6 and Jeremiah 33:15, "I will raise up to David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land." Matthew's book supplies the link between the old and new testaments in giving the geneology of Jesus back to Abraham. The key phrase in Matthew was "to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet" takes us back to the old testament prohecies. |

656 | please explain Mathew 21:28-32. | Matthew | prayon | 40938
Greetings, The parable represents many self-righteous, even religious people who today join churches and call themselves Christians, but who in truth refuse to obey God. They refuse to believe in Jesus, to follow Christ's leading, and they refuse to take up His cross to live a life of complete identification with Him. In the end they may find that complete gross sinners, such as the prostitutes and the tax collectors, who have humbly repented and received Christ, are accepted, whereas the self-righteous, who have lived outwardly moral lives are excluded because they basically refused obedience to God's conditions for salvation as revealed through Christ. prayon
657 | What did Jesus mean when he said this? | Matthew | prayon | 125989
Greetings, He did this because he knew the life a widower had to live when there was no one to care for them. Mary was a widower and therefore had no one to care for her. It is probable that Joseph, her husband, was long since dead, and that her son Jesus had supported her, and her relation to him had been her maintenance; and now that he was dying what would become of her? Christ tenderly provided for his mother at his death. Christ's example teaches all men to honour their aged parents in life and death; to provide for their wants, and to promote their comfort by every means in their power. prayon I am not sure about the sign of the cross. You will have to ask that question again. |
