1161 | introduction to ephesians | Ephesians | prayon | 47820
Greetings chandren, Ephesians was written to encourage and strengthen the believers in Ephesus in their Christian faith and to remind believers of their immeasurable blessing in Jesus Christ, and not only to be thankful for those blessings, but also to live a life that is worthy of them. Ephesus was a important political, educational, and commercial center. It was one of the largest cities in the Mediterranean world during NT times. Its 1/4 to 1/2 million population included had its share of great preachers. Ephesus was the capital Roman province of Asia (Asia Minor, modern Turkey). It is best known for its magnificent temple of Artemis, or Diana, one the 7 wonders of the ancient world. The letter of Ephesians explains the nature and purpose of the church. Church is not meant to be a four walled building but instead the church of Jesus Christ is the people who love Christ and are committed to serve Him. Several pictures of the church are presented: body, temple, nystery, new man, bride, and soldier. The letter of Ephesians became a circular letter hat was widely ditstributed to many of the early churches. Ephesians was written about 60 AD by Paul from Rome during Paul's imprisonment there. The church at Ephesus was one of the most prominent of the churches established in about 53 AD during one of Paul's couragious journeys. It is believed that the gospel was first brought to Ephesus by Pricilla and Aquilla who were left there by Paul on his second missionary journey and then was more firmly established by Paul on his third missionary journey (Acts 19). The church was pastored by Paul for about 3 years. After Paul left Timothy pastored the church for about a year and a half, primarily encountering the false teaching of a few influential men, such as Hymenaeus and Alexander, who were probably elders in the congregation there. Because of these men, the church was plagued by "fables and endless genealogies" (1:4) and by such ascetic and unscriptural ideas as the forbidding of marriage and abstaining from certain foods. Although those false teachers did not rightly understand Scripture, they propounded their ungodly interpretations with confidence, which produced in the church harmful dissputes rather than godly edification which is in faith. The letter was not written to confront any heresy or problem in the churches in the area. Paul had spent over 3 years with the Ephesian church and as a result he was very close to them. The first 3 chapters are theological, emphasizing NT doctrine whereas the last 3 chapters are practical and focus on Christian behavior. Hope this helps, prayon |

1162 | What about an abusif husband? | Ephesians | prayon | 93607
Greetings paulie and welcome to the forum, Eph 5:21 says that a husband and wife should "be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ". This is talking of a godly relationship not one where one party is abusive to the other. Christ's relationship to the church was one of servanthood of all who followed Him and He gave Himself up for them. Never did He order people around, threaten, hit or frighten them. Another scripture Col 3:19 says that husbands are to love their wives and do not be harsh with them. If the man is not fulfilling his responsibility or obligation as a husband the wife is not obligated to be a dorrmat for him. Jesus does not expect a woman to stay and tolerate the abuse. The wife's obligation is to provide for her safety and the safety of the children. In any sort of abuse, whether it be physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual, the children are subjected to that abuse and will pay the price later in life if not at the present. In addition if the abuse cycle is not ended it will continue through the children to their spouses. It is better to remove them from the abuse rather than to allow them to be harmed. She is accountable to God for her children and the way they are raised. I am assuming that since this is a 15 year marriage that the children are older children. Children are vulnerable. They will desperately need counceling too. Nothing creates anger in children as quickly as abuse by parents or parent to parent abuse. Abuse in any form is a vicious cycle that needs to be stopped. Encourage this woman to seek Christian counceling. If intuitively she does not want to speak to her own pastor then there is probably good reason. If the pastor encourages her to be a "better wife" or to stay where she is at or even to lift up the abuse to the Lord (remaining where she is) then this person will not be a good resource for her. Remember ministers ususally have not received any formal training on the subject and have no comprehension about what she is going through. It is a good idea to contact a shelter for abused women. They will have different names for people who will be able to help. May God Give this woman courage and strength in her time of trial. prayon |

1164 | Believing in the Bible and E.T.'s | Eph 2:2 | prayon | 2656
God is so awesome. I read or learn something and the next day there is a question about it posted. The following comes from "The End Time Occult Invasion: Entertaining Spirits Unaware", a book that exposes many of the subtle deceptions of the evil one and provides tools to effectively combat the encroachment of the New Age and Occult into our lives and home. Reports of visitors from other worlds are quite common in our society today. Reports have come from rural areas to large cities. Although credibility is questionable in some cases more than 1 astronaut has reported seeing alien craft while in space. Entire city populations have witnessed UFO events that could not be explained. It is hard not to believe in something that many, many people have been an eye witness to. Although I am unaware of any scriptures pertaining to E.T.'s and UFO's scripture does remind us that the devil IS the prince of the power of the air (Eph 2:2) and god of this world (2Cor 4:4). Remember, too, that there are instances throughout scripture that angels have appeared and operated in the physical realm. It is also interesting to note that radars have never detected any UFO's coming INTO our atmosphere although they have been tracked many times while here. When the authors of this book examined UFO and alien phenomenon from a biblical and New Age point of view there were striking parallels. First if you want to read any books on aliens you must go to the occult section of the library. This shows that aliens are closely linked with the occult. Most New Agers believe that aliens have chosen to enlighten them to communicate with them due to their spiritual "enlightenment. The out growth of the UFO phenomomen doctrinally lines up with the world of the occult - not with God's word. If for no other reason, this is a good reason to believe that aliens are nothing more than demons in disguise weaving a web to attract millions today. Their is also, according to the authors Eric Barger and David Benoit, indeed reason to believe that UFO's originate from another dimension than from another planet. In synopsis I believe that it is not against the bible to believe in aliens. We must remember that Satan will and does use many means to deceive his prey. He is the father of lies and illusion. I hope this helps some. |

1165 | Has Anyone Changed His Mind? | Eph 2:8 | prayon | 51276
Greetings Hank! No, I have not changed my mind. Salvation is by grace, not by works, or how/when you are baptized. To forgive all of our sins God must have to have mercy or He would give up on some of us. Baptism is something we do and NOTHING we can do can give us salvation except to accept Jesus Christ as our savior. prayon
1166 | How do I know my purpose in life | Eph 2:10 | prayon | 108893
Greetings Chill, One more thing that no one mentioned that you could do is to talk to your pastor. Many times pastors have received a word of knowledge from the Lord and are able to give direction in areas we need it, including your purpose or destiny. prayon
1167 | What does it mean to be an "evangelist". | Eph 4:11 | prayon | 3520
An evangelist is one who proclaims the good news about God's kingdom and Jesus Christ. To be an evangelist is to be responsible for proclaiming this good news and to spread His word to those who have not heard it. Evangelist is one of the 5 gifts of the Holy Spirit mentioned in Eph 4:11

1171 | Did Cain marry one of his sisters? | Eph 5:25 | prayon | 165397
Greetings Tessie, There is no legitamate question that a person has about the bible that we should not concern ourselves with. Every word of the bible is there for a reason and is there to teach us. If the bible said that Cain was married then there is a reason it was there and we should strive to understand its meaning. Also Ps 131:2 says "Surely I have behaved and have quieted my soul, as one weaned by its mother; my soul on me is like one weaned." If you were refering to v. 1 then you have used that out of context as it is referring to pride. prayon |

1172 | Did Cain marry one of his sisters? | Eph 5:25 | prayon | 165398
Greetings Bibleman3, This question has been asked many times. For the most informative answer go to the search box in the upper right corner and type in "Cain sister". This should give you all the information you need. Have a blessed day! prayon
1173 | Did Cain marry one of his sisters? | Eph 5:25 | prayon | 165423
Tessie, However we do not know whether that was the case or if he is a "baby Christian" and is really trying to understand. As for Psalm 131 - Adam Clarke's Commentary says: Psalms 131 - The psalmist professes his humility, and the peaceableness of his disposition and conduct, Psa_131:1, Psa_131:2. Exhorts Israel to hope in God, Psa_131:3. Matthew Henry's Commentary say, "This psalm is David's profession of humility, humbly made, with thankfulness to God for his grace, and not in vain-glory." Treasure of Scriptual Knowledge says, "Psa_131:1, David, professing his humility, Psa_131:3, exhorts Israel to trust in God. Adam Barnes Notes on the Bible say, " this psalm was probably a private meditation on what he had done, and was of the nature of a personal examination of his spirit and motives." J,F, and B's commentary says, "Psa_131:1-3. This Psalm, while expressive of David’s pious feelings on assuming the royal office, teaches the humble, submissive temper of a true child of God." John Darby's Synopsis says, "Psa 131:1-3 - Psalm 131 briefly states the humble absence of all self-confidence, that so he has walked. Israel is now to trust in Jehovah and for ever." I can not find one commentary that says this psalm does not address pride. Could I ask where you found that it does not address pride? I would be very interested to know. prayon |

1174 | Can i pray a similar prayer as Psalms 35 | Eph 5:33 | prayon | 104566
Most Assuredly! You can pray it word for word. Why change a proven thing? The bible is our guide and we can quote any prayer in it! I do it all the time - I just personalize it. prayon
1175 | Do demons still exists? | Eph 6:12 | prayon | 29818
Greetings, Eerdman's Bible dictionary defines demons as 'a spirit with minor powers.' "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers" (demons) "of darkness of this world". Eph 6:12. Eph 4:27 warns us to not "give place to the devil". 1Tim 4:1 tells us that in latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits (demons), and doctrines of the devil. The NT depicts demons as any evil spirit. Yes, Kaman there are still demons today. They can exist in any form. They can even disguise themselves as angels of light. They can be found everywhere where there is anything that would keep you from worshipping the One true and living God and giving your life totally to Him. prayon |

1176 | Searching for the truth | Eph 6:12 | prayon | 72931
Greetings FytRobert, Ephesians tell us that we do not wrestle against flesh and blood but instead against spiritual hosts of wickedness in heavenly places. All battles are between God and Satan. Christians are involved in this war because we are part of God's army that wage war in the heavenlies by the power of prayer. We have been given the power to bring Satan and his demons down. Non Christians are involved because with or without knowing it they war on the side of evil. You can either be for good or evil, for God or for Satan. There is no gray area. If you have not given your life to Christ then you are on the side of evil. Hope this helps. prayon |

1177 | Searching for the truth | Eph 6:12 | prayon | 75697
The power I am referring to is the power that Jesus said would come upon you when you receive the Holy Spirit, (see Acts 1:8). To use it effectively we must first know the word and what it says, which leads to faith. When we speak something and have faith as small as a mustard seed what we say will come to pass. With this faith we are to call down the works of Satan. Does this help any? prayon
1178 | sharp tongues | Eph 6:19 | prayon | 92652
Greetings Brad, Here are some additional verses: Psa 64:3-6 Sharp tongues are the swords they wield; bitter words are the arrows they aim. They shoot from ambush at the innocent, attacking suddenly and fearlessly. They encourage each other to do evil and plan how to set their traps. “Who will ever notice?” they ask. As they plot their crimes, they say, “We have devised the perfect plan!” Yes, the human heart and mind are cunning. Prov 17:20 He who has a deceitful heart finds no good, And he who has a perverse tongue falls into evil. Pro 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit. Pro 21:23 Whoever guards his mouth and tongue Keeps his soul from troubles. prayon |

I am like you - sometimes I am also more tolerant and compromising, on the other hand though when we know that about ourselves I believe we are more on guard - at least I am. The one thing I find that I must do is pray for the spirit of discernment so that if I miss the advasary God will "wake me up". prayon
