801 | WHAT DOES THE NUMBER 40 REPRESENTIN THE | Bible general Archive 1 | prayon | 40317
Greetings Debby, The numbers in the bible have a literal meaning but also a symbolic meaning. The number 40 is idiomatic for any period of time regarded as a complete event. It is the standard figure for a complete generation, for example the Isrealites wandered in the desert for 40 years until the unbelieving generation had died. Exod 2:11 and Acts 7:23 also tell us that 40 was when a person reached maturity. (Eerdmans and Harpers Bible Dictionary) Hope this helps. You can also type in "number 40" in the quick search box for more information. prayon
802 | Was Satan speaking through Peter ?? | Mark 8:33 | prayon | 40314
Greetings Chearie, Both of your thoughts are correct. Peter upon hearing Jesus tell of His suffering and death "took Him aside and began to rebuke Him". In this conversation Satan was using Peter as a means of furthering his own motives. Satan definitly did not want Jesus to be crucified because he knew that that would be His demise. He also spoke so that the disciples could hear Him so that they would have a better idea of how Satan worked. prayon

804 | Evidence that women's role has changed? | Matt 28:10 | prayon | 40111
Searcher, I have read the details and that is exactly what I said - Pricilla AND Aquilla taught Apollos, and I never said they did so in a group setting. prayon
805 | Evidence that women's role has changed? | Matt 28:10 | prayon | 39963
Greetings Erika, I would also like to add to the above the situation of Aquilla, Pricilla and Apollos. In Acts 18:26 it tells us that Pricilla and Aquilla taught Apollos the way of God more accurately. They taught not he taught. In addition God tells us specifically in Joel 2:28 that in the end times He "will pour out His Spirit on ALL flesh; your sons and your daughters will prophecy.....Even on the male and female slaves in those days, will I pour out my spirit". Also in 1Cor 11:5 it tells us that women were not allowed to prophecy with their head uncovered and 1Cor chapters 12-14 that women have spiritual gifts and they are encouraged to use them in the body of Christ. You can also find much more on women in the ministry by typing in "women ministry" in the search box. prayon |

806 | Who wrote the Book of Matthew? | Matthew | prayon | 39575
Greetings Aikens, Matthews gospel as Hank said was written by Matthew the former tax collector. However, it was probably written after Mark's since it takes many passages from Mark's gospel. Matthew was believed to be written about 60-70 AD since it does not mention the fall of Jerusalem. In the early church Matthew was the most read and quoted of any of the other gospels. Matthew presents Jesus as the Mighty King and emphasizes the power of Christ. it is written in the diadactic or teaching style which is why it was placed first in the bible. The allegotical comparison which was taken from Eze. 1:10 is that of the lion. Each of the four gospels give one of the four aspects of "the Branch" according to old testament prophesies. Matthew uses Jeremaih 23:5-6 and Jeremiah 33:15, "I will raise up to David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land." Matthew's book supplies the link between the old and new testaments in giving the geneology of Jesus back to Abraham. The key phrase in Matthew was "to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet" takes us back to the old testament prohecies. |

807 | regarding diet and meat | Bible general Archive 1 | prayon | 39565
Greetings sassy, A list of foods that were unclean for the Isrealites is given in Deut. 14:1-21. There are several reasons for these forbidden foods. 1. The Isrealites were not allowed to eat blood. Since some of these animals were hunters and had eaten other animals they were forbidden to be eaten. 2. Some of the forbidden animals were used in pagan rituals and were therefore associated with those rituals. 3. Perhaps some of the restrictions were given just to continually remind Isreal that they were a seperate people committed to God. In Acts 10:9-16 Paul's dream tells us that such animals are no longer forbidden to us. prayon |

To add just a little more to Shelly's answer: The 40th chapter of Isaiah a description of the character and the omnipotence of God. Verse 31 gives us the encouraging truth that because God is all powerful He can give strength to those who need it. prayon
809 | Theme and Emphasis of Matt 5-7 | Matthew | prayon | 38457
Greetings, The Sermon on the Mount, that was preached to the disciples, reveals the standard of righteousness that Christ requires of all who belong to Him. It first elaborates on His new commandment to love one another. This eye opener of the true life of holiness also creates in the honest heart an awareness of coming short of the glory of God. In addition, in creates a strong desire to be righteous inside as well as on the outside. Since it is impossible to be completely righteous on the inside it drives us to Jesus where he alone can cause the "righteous requirements of the law" to be fulfilled in our lives. There is a definite relation between the Sermon on the Mount and the Ten Commandments. The Sermon on the Mount, like the Ten Commandments, is our teacher to help us recognize our need of the supernatural help of Christ. Even though the requirement of inward as well as outward righteousness is revealed throughout the OT the majority of Isrealites chose to perceive God's law as requiring only outward actions and outward ceremonies. Jesus in the sermon traces the outward act to its source and motive in the heart. prayon
810 | Women included? | Num 14:29 | prayon | 38324
Because of the disbelief in the power of the Lord to defeat the inhabitants of Caanan God told them that they would have to wander in the wilderness for 40 years until all that had seen His miracles had died. In verse 29 He said that all your number included in the census, which included only men over 20. Since the women were "insignificant" in this time where they included in the in the punishment or not?

813 | Luke on material possessions | Luke | prayon | 35680
Greetings and welcome to the forum! Jesus is pointing to a higher issue here than the family inheritance mentioned in verse 1. He is stressing the importance of a corrct attitude toward the accumulation of wealth. Life is more than material goods, far more important is our relationship with God. The good life has nothing to do with being wealthy - so we are to beware of covetness (greed for what we don't have). We need to learn to tune out all the earthly enticements and instead concentrate on living in a good relationship with God. The man in the parable died before he could use in his barns. Wealth and planning for retirement is good but it only lasts a short time. We must be more concerned about what we have to take with us into eternal life. Jesus challenges us to think beyond earthly goals and to use what we have been given for God's kingdom. Faith, service, and obedience are the way to get rich with God. Hope this helps. prayon |

814 | signficance of penny to whatsoever right | Matt 20:4 | prayon | 35676
Greetings, In order to understand verse 4 you must look at the whole parable. This is a parable concerning the "11th hour". The owner of the vineyard represents God and the vineyard is His kingdom. The laborers are those who have heard the gospel and chose to live for God from the time of Christ until the 11th hour. The hours that the laborers heard the call for the first time might also mean the time of your life that you heard the call - in childhood right up to death. One interpretation is that God gives eternal life to all who respond to Him. The denarius (worth about 17 cents) represents eternal life which is given to all workers equally at the end of the age. Another interpretation is that God's rewards depend on His sovereign grace. A third view of the parable is that it's main teaching focuses on the faithfulness of the workers, not on the amount of work nor the size of the task. The point here is that there is a warning for Christians, those who feel they deserve more than others question God's grace and in the process rob themselves of the joy of receiving God's grace to them. God's ways of determining rewards in the kingdom is different than man's. prayon |

815 | Blamfamings the Holy Spirit | Luke 12:10 | prayon | 35674
ewendall, the answer is yes. The unforgivable sin involves an ongoing rejection of the Holy Spirit's work and thus of God himself. A person who has commited this sin has shut himself off from God so completely that he is unaware of any sin at all. A person who fears of having committed this sin shows by his concern that he is not guilty of this sin. prayon

818 | Tabernacle/Sacrificial Animals? | Heb 8:5 | prayon | 35671
Greetings Charis! The only information on that that I can find is related to the fellowship or peace offering. In this offering all that was burnt was the kidneys, tge appendage fo the liver which shall be removed with the kidneys and the fatthat covers and surrounds the entrails. The rest of the animal was to be eaten by the worshipper, his family and his friends in a fellowship meal. (Lev 7:16). I will see if I can find the answer to answer your question in a broader sense. prayon
819 | What is the lesson from Lk 18:9-14 | Luke | prayon | 35668
Greetings; In addition to what Benjamite wrote I add the following: The Pharisee prayed aloud where everyone could hear him. Self-righteousness is dangerous. It can lead to pride and can prevent us hearing from God. When we are not humble and pray aloud for others to hear our achievements we receive our rewards at that time- do not expect more from God. (Matt 6:5). "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble" (1Pet 5:5b). God's recognition is more important than man's. prayon |

820 | nephillim offspring of fallen angels? | Gen 6:1 | prayon | 35362
Some people believe that the "sons of God" were fallen angels, however the "sons of God" were probably not angels because angels do not marry or reproduce. Some scholars believe that this phrase refers to the descendants of Seth who intermarried with Cain's evil descendants ("the daughters of humans"). This would have weakened the good influence of the faithful and increased moral depravity in the world. The result was an explosion of evil. "Nephilim" refers to a powerful race of giants.
