642 | Need some help in saying right things! | 1 Samuel | prayon | 60521
Greetings Mae64, Boy, does your senario sound familar! When you care for your son as you are doing you are enabling him to have a sinful life. In a commentary on 2Pet 3:11 Matthew Henry’s Commentary says "Never expect to be found at that day of God in peace, if you are lazy and idle in this your day, in which we must finish the work that is given us to do. It is only the diligent Christian who will be the happy Christian in the day of the Lord. Our Lord will suddenly come to us, or shortly call us to him; and would you have him find you idle?’’ Remember there is a curse denounced against him who does the work of the Lord negligently. You said your son is 41 and I am assuming that he is not mentally challenged. I think that tough love needs to be practiced here. If you continue to provide for him, he will continue to use you. He is a grown man and, although it was a hard lesson for me to learn with my sons, they are adults and we need to let them be accountable for their actions. If we continue to get them out of trouble they will not "learn their lessons" and continue to make the same mistakes. njenkins mentioned Eli's sons in the previous answer. Eli was a lax father who had no control over his two sons. Phinehas and Hophni took meat from sacrificial animals before they were dedicated to God. They also “lay with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle” (1 Sam. 2:22). God pronounced judgment on Eli because of his failure to discipline his sons.(Nelson’s new illustrated Bible dictionary). Hope this helps. prayon |

643 | the earth was without form, and void; | Gen 1:2 | prayon | 60518
Greetings moji, Without form and void means "Not finished in its shape and as yet not inhabited by creatures". On the first day God spoke and said "Let there be light and there was light". Effortlessly He dispelled the darkness with just that one command showing us that He is in control of everything. I hope this help because I am not sure exactly what you are asking. prayon
644 | Which one is the Truth ? | 1 Cor 12:1 | prayon | 60480
Greetings berhane! I would ask you to do a search on tongues and one on the Holy Spirit. To do this go to the upper right corner to "quick search" and type in "tongues" then repeat the same for "Holy Spirit". There has been so much conversation on both. If you still have any questions please feel free to ask. Blessings, prayon |

645 | Can one be saved by just repenting alone | Acts 16:1 | prayon | 60452
Greetings gsuslentme, 1John 1:9 tells us that if we confess our sins, He who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from ALL unrighteousness. Romans 10:9 again tells us "if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved!" None of us deserve His grace and mercy, we are all sinners, and any one sin is just as bad as any other sin. For example the sin of lying is just as bad as the sin of murder. I don't know what your "tremendous" sin is but I can assure you that in God's eyes it is no worse than mine. So no matter what your "tremendous" sin our God is a merciful and gracious God and if you ask He will forgive. We are so blessed that He does not deal with us according to our sins nor repay us for our iniquities (v10). When we ask Him for forgiveness for our sins He tells us in Psa 103:12 that he will remove our transgressions from us as far as the east is from the west, and then in Heb 8:12 He tells us that He will remember our sins no more. When you ask for forgiveness for your sins with Jesus it is as if they had never taken place. They have been totally wiped away. Eph 2:8 tells us that by grace we have been saved through faith, and this is not our own doing; it is a gift from God. In John 3:16 He give us the promise that who ever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.So the answer to your question is Yes. All you do is ask for God's forgiveness and proclaim that you believe and you don't move on to be a Christian - you ARE a Christian! If you want to be forgiven and turn you life to God I ask you to say this prayer "Oh, God, I know I am a sinner. Right now I repent and ask for forgivenness for all my sins. I believe that Jesus Christ died for my sins, rose from the grave, and is alive forever. I open the door to my heart and life and I receive Jesus Christ as my Savior. I want to follow Him as Lord of my life. Thank you for saving me. Amen" It is that simple. As for your question about baptism. Getting baptized does not save one's life. You are only saved when you pray a prayer similar to the one above. Baptism is a physical act that one can (and should) do. It symbolizes the cleansing away of the sins. The water symbolizes washing away the "dirtiness of sin". If you have any questions at all please do not hesitate to ask. May God Bless you in the journey you are about to begin. prayon |

646 | suggest a meaning for the coals (10:2) | Ezek 10:2 | prayon | 60450
Greetings and welcome. To add to what Timothy Paul said: God specifies that the angel reach in and grab the coals. The coals picture the fires of judgement which God's angels were to "scatter" on Jerusalem. In Isa 6 "coals" were used for the purification of the prophet; here they were used for the destruction of the wicked. Fire did destroy Jerusalem in 586 BC. prayon
647 | what is candle burning? | Ps 141:2 | prayon | 60364
Greetings benard, A candle is a mass of tallow or wax containing a linen or cotton wick that is burned to give light. The people of biblical times did not use candles as such. The NKJV translates it as “lamp” (Job 18:6; Prov. 20:27; Luke 8:16). The lamps of the ancient world were shallow bowls with a pinched rim. A wick was laid in these grooves, with one end extending above the lip of the lamp while the other end rested in the olive oil, which provided fuel. The lamp was a simple oil-burning vessel used for lighting houses and public buildings in Bible times. Pottery lamps either had lips or were completely enclosed, with a hole in the middle, or a spout in the rim, for the wick. Such lamps were often decorated, and many had handles for convenient carrying. Jewish lamps were decorated with the symbol of the Menorah, the seven-branched lampstand. Christian lamps were decorated with Christian symbols such as crosses, fish, and the alpha and omega. The lamp became a symbol of understanding (2 Sam. 22:29), guidance (Prov. 6:23), and life (Job 21:17). John the Baptist was “the burning and shining lamp” in whose light the Jews of his day rejoiced (John 5:35). In Jesus’ parable of the wise and foolish virgins (Matt. 25:1–13), taking enough oil to keep the lamps burning represented good works done in obedience to Jesus’ teaching. Not taking enough oil to keep the lamps burning represented disobedience to Christ. Today many candles are scented which I believe is the same as incense. the bible refers to incense as a sweet-smelling substance that was burned as an offering to God on the altar in the tabernacle and the temple. The purpose of this incense offering was to honor God. Incense symbolized and expressed the prayers of the Hebrew people, which were considered a pleasant aroma offered to God. In a figurative use of the word, the psalmist requested that his prayer might be brought before the Lord as incense (Ps. 141:2). Incense possibly was also a symbol of a godly life, offered up to God as a pleasant aroma before him. The burning of incense is symbolic of the offering up of prayers (cf. Ex. 30:7, 8; Luke 1:10; Rev. 5:8; 8:3, 4). (Believer’s study Bible; Nelson's New Illillustrated Bible dictionary) Hope this helps. prayon |

648 | How does Mark portray Christ? | Mark | prayon | 60343
Greetings Janita, Most Bible scholars believe that Mark's gospel was the first gospel to be written, probably around 58-60 AD, because each of the other gospels add to Mark's. The other gospels quote all but 31 verses of Mark's. Mark gives us a summary of Christ's teachings. His focus is on the deeds of Jesus more than His teachings, particularly emphasizing service and sacrifice. Mark presents Jesus as the suffering and obedient servant. His gospel is a narrative gospel that reads like a diary and is full of action. He is very descriptive and his is the most chronological gospel. He records more of Jesus' miracles than sermons and more miracles that any other book. It was primarily written for the Romans, particularily Gentiles. He never uses the word "law" for fear that the Romans might think he was referring to Roman law instead of Jewish law. His gospel is considered the gospel of present action, or movement, of anecdotes. The key word or phrase in Mark being "at once", "straightway", or "immediately". Each gospel gives a different allegorical comparison (based on Eze 1:10). Mark compares Jesus with the Ox in his gospel. His emphasis of Christ being a servant comes from the 4 aspects of "The Branch" according to the OT prophecies, Mark using Zech 3:8 "I am going to bring my servant, the Branch". His gospel begins where Jesus public ministry begins and ends with the Ascension. In Mark Jesus deimonstrates His divinity by overcoming disease, demons, and death. Mark was a very close companion of Peter. He is repeartedly refered to in the book of Acts, where he is known as John whose surname (or other name) was Mark. Mark was a cousin of Barnabas (Col 4:10) and accompanied Barnabas and Paul on their first missionary journey. Hope this answers some of your quesions. prayon |

649 | Justify Leviticus 20:13 | Lev 20:13 | prayon | 60244
I can justify it because it is the word or God pure and simple. God tells us that homoseuality is an abomination to Him, which is one of the strongest words He uses anywhere in the bible and it is just as true and applicable today as it was in Moses day when He gave the law. I am sure that there are those who find it offensive. They can find it offensive but if they choose to have eternal life they must obey God's word and not participate in something that God forbids us to do. Those who do not obey God's word will suffer the consequences of their choices. Religion is not a way of controlling but a way of providing freedom to the masses. God never prevented us from having what you call creative and independant thought. He gave us the right to make our own choices and to think what we want. Those who think Christians are being fooled are themselves the ones who are deceived. prayon |

650 | What are the synoptic Gospels? | NT general Archive 1 | prayon | 60237
The gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke are called the synoptic gospels because of their common structure, perspective and contents. In fact all the material of each can be set in parallel columns in such a way that all three records could be seen together or "synoptically". The similarity of these gospel may be seen in their general outline of Jesus' life and activity, details of style and language, and at times exact or nearly exact verbal statements of Jesus. The gospel of Matthew, Mark and Luke differ from the gospel of John. John has a certain quality that puts it in an altogether different category. John was the oldest of all the disciples and his book was written last. In writing his book last he had time to delve into the deeper truth concerning Jesus, the divine son of God. It was important that this deeper meaning be supplied to the world so God caused John to supply this particular key to understanding the gospel already told in the earlier gospels. Whereas the earlier gospels focused on the miracles of Jesus and the peoples reactions to them John focused on certain words and works of Jesus and omitted many incidents (including all parables) in Jesus life. John called the miracles signs and focused on their spiritual significance. He had one aim in mind, to show that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of God, and by believing in this one could have eternal life. prayon |

652 | Church Building or Not | Bible general Archive 1 | prayon | 60219
shortstop, I can see your points about the need to have access to the building for different functions. I would wonder why your pastor stays in the high school rather than build or rent another building. However, we must remember that everything works together for the good of God. We must remember that He has a reason for your being in the high school building. It is possible that because of your being in the high school with all your praise and worship and praying that there are demons that have been removed from the school. God has been invited into that building and when God is invited in it always makes a difference. Sounds like why you are there is one of those "Ahh So" questions to ask when you get to heaven (Ahh so that's why we were there.....)prayon

655 | The "branches" of Romans 11 | Bible general Archive 1 | prayon | 60198
Greetings, Many have had problems with the illustration of the olive tree with it's rejected and newly grafted branches. Many of these problems come from trying to go beyond the simple point of the illustration. If we think of the broken off branches as individuals, we introduce the thought of a person's salvation being lost, which contradicts Paul's teaching else where. However, if we think of the branches as nations, Israel is replaced by Gentile nations and we end up thinking that there is some degree of Gentile supremacy. These problems can be eliminated if we understand that Paul is not referring to individuals or nations specifically but only about the masses of Jews and many Gentiles. What he is getting at is most Jews have not believed in Jesus and are therefore cut off from the spiritual blessings that should be theirs because they are Jews. On the other hand the Gentiles, who have no claim on the spiritual blessings granted to Israel have nevertheless entered into those blessing by faith in Jesus. Hope this helps. 656 | Worry, Cannot trust ppl and Criticism | Matt 6:25 | prayon | 60184
Greetings Lialia, We worry when we do not trust God or rely on Him totally. I got an email today that I am including to you that I think will help you to stop worrying: Moses and the people were in the desert, but what was he going to do with them? They had to be fed, and feeding 2 or 3 million people requires a lot of food. According to the Quartermaster General in the Army, it is reported that Moses would have to have had 1500 tons of food each day. Do you know that to bring that much food each day, two freight trains, each at least a mile long, would be required! Besides you must remember, they were out in the desert, so they would have to have firewood to use in cooking the food. This would take 4000 tons of wood and a few more freight trains, each a mile long, just for one day. And just think, they were forty years in transit. And Oh yes! They would have to have water. If they only had enough to drink and wash a few dishes, it would take 11,000,000 gallons each day and a freight train with tank cars, 1800 miles long, just to bring water! And then another thing! They had to get across the Red Sea at night. Now, if they went on a narrow path, double file, the line would be 800 miles long and would require 35 days and nights to get through. So there had to be a space in the Red Sea, 3 miles wide so that they could walk 5000 abreast to get over in one night. But then, there is another problem...............each time they camped at the end of the day, a campground two-thirds the size of the state of Rhode Island was required, or a total of 750 square miles long........ think of it! This much space for camping. Do you think Moses figured all this out before he left Egypt? I think not! You see, Moses believed in God. God took care of these things for him. Now do you think God has any problem taking care of all your needs? As for the not being able to trust people and critcism I am not sure what you are asking. Could you be a little bit more specific about the situation. If you feel more comfortable in emailing me feel free, the address is in my profile. prayon |

657 | LEFT BEHIND? | Bible general Archive 1 | prayon | 60180
Greetings John, How true! Do you know what really had an effect on me when it cam to wanting to stay out of hell? A book I read about 6 or 7 years ago but it is still having an impact on me and probably always will. It's called "A Divine Revelation of Hell" by Mary Baxter. Now I know that it is probably all fiction but there is always that .01 percent chance it is not....and if it is not it is worse than I ever imagined it could be. I have given the book to a few people and it had the same effect on them. prayon

659 | Daniel 8:21 the shaggy goat. | Dan 8:21 | prayon | 60118
Greetings just me, In Daniel's interpretation of Nebuchadnezzar's dream in Chap 2 Daniel told us that the belly and thighs of bronze represented a kingdom which would rule over all the earth. This was the kingdom of Macedonia and Greece. These countries were under the leadership of Alexander the Great beginning in 334 BC. In Daniels perspective all the earth would be conquered by his leadership. In verse 8:21 it tells us that the goat was the kingdom of Greece. Alexander the Great knew that he fit the profile of that prophecy. I believe you could get the history part from any ancient/biblical history book. prayon |
