561 | which bible to use | Bible general Archive 2 | kalos | 119762
mikec: I can't tell someone else which Bible version they should use. But I can make a recommendation. I can tell you which Bibles I prefer. I use a number of translations for reading and study. The ones I use and trust most are the New American Standard Bible and the New King James Version. These two translations are unbeatable for literalness and accuracy. This is not to say there are no other trustworthy, literal, accurate versions. There are others. Which Bible is right for you depends on several factors, such as your reading level and personal preferences. Which are you looking for -- readability or accuracy? Of the four you mentioned I would go with the NLT for readability and the NKJV for literal accuracy. Since you are new to this scene, I would highly recommend the Life Application Study Bible. The notes and helps in it are easy to understand. It is published in several translations -- NLT, NIV, KJV, NKJV and NASB. It is available online and in bookstores everywhere. You can even buy one at Wal-Mart. The bottom line is that the best translation of the Bible is the one you understand and trust. Grace to you, kalos |

568 | Recovery Bible/N.Testament/what? | Bible general Archive 2 | kalos | 120348
The Recovery Bible and The Recovery New Testament are products of the "Local Church" organization, founded upon the teachings of WATCHMAN NEE. 'The "Local Church" is it a cult of Christianity? The teachings of Witness Lee, are they heretic? Though we cannot classify the "Local Church" or the "Church of Recovery" alongside the major cults of Christianity (Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, etc.) because of the latter’s major deviation from the "faith once entrusted to the saints" we cannot also consider them "orthodox" because of their aberrant teachings following that of Witness Lee. We need to have a constant watch on this group and therefore pray for them that they may see the truth in the light of the Holy Scriptures. By our definition of the cult of Christianity I’d say they are inclined to be one' (http://thebereans.net/arm-wlee.shtml). 'The New Testament Recovery Version was translated and revised by the Editorial Section of Living Stream Ministry from 1974 to 1991. The New Testament Recovery Version contains numerous study aids...All of these study aids were written by Witness Lee, who received much help from the writings of noted Bible expositors throughout church history, including his co-worker, WATCHMAN NEE' (http://www.recoveryversion.org/). 'NEE, WATCHMAN (1903-1972) Widely read Christian author with some controversial teachings. NEE required blanket, unquestioning obedience. He also taught that all Christians must have a "Covering" - a person who has delegated authority, must be obeyed unconditionally, and who must be imitated. This "covering" does not stop with matters of faith and doctrine, but also extends to personal and secular matters (such as choice of employment, place to live, whether or not to marry, etc.) In addition, NEE taught there should only be one congregation in each city. Whenever NEE's followers moved into a city, they proclaimed themselves as the only church approved by God in that city. These doctrines have been picked up by various abusive churches and cultic movements, such as the International Churches of Christ. Under the leadership of NEE's disciple and co-worker, Witness Lee, his house church movement, the Local Church (known to it's followers as "The Lord's Recovery") later also became controversial' (http://www.apologeticsindex.org/n00.html). |

569 | The Seventh Day | Bible general Archive 2 | kalos | 120439
The Sabbath in Acts 'Among the several references to the Sabbath in Acts (1:12; 13:14-44; 15:21; 17:2; 18:4; 20:7) there is little evidence to suggest that the earliest Christian communities deviated from the traditional Sabbath observed on the seventh day. The lone reference to a gathering "On the first day of the week" (20:7) most likely reflects an emerging Christian consensus that the first day was an appropriate day on which to meet for worship and celebrating the Lord's Supper.' ____________________ (http://bible.crosswalk.com/Dictionaries/BakersEvangelicalDictionary/bed.cgi) |

570 | The Seventh Day | Bible general Archive 2 | kalos | 120512
Sunday commanded--show us the evidence! Rowdy: Please cite the NT book, chapter and verse where Jesus, the Apostles, or anyone else COMMANDS "first day" (Sunday) worship. Meeting on the first day of the week may have been practiced by the early church. But "practiced" does not equal "commanded". My question is very specific. It does not require a thesis paper or dissertation to answer it. All I'm asking for is chapter and verse where Sunday worship is COMMANDED. Show it to me in the NT. 571 | Are christians promised 70 years of life | Bible general Archive 2 | kalos | 120560
You are correct. And the reason you can't find it is because it is not there. The burden of proof is on the one who makes the assertion. When your friend or anyone else makes an assertion, they need to back it up with chapter and verse -- a scriptural reference. |

Luke 8:2 NASB "and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary who was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out." I don't know where people, including writers of movies, Easter programs, musicals and rock operas, get the idea that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. Wherever they got it, it certainly wasn't from the Bible, which does not say that Mary M. had ever been a prostitute. All the Bible does tell us of her background is that she is the one "from whom seven demons had gone out." "8:2. *Mary who was called Magdalene.* Her hometown was Magdala. She is not to be confused with the sinful woman of Luke 7 or Mary of Bethany (John 11:1)" (Zondervan NASB Study Bible, Zondervan, 1999). |

"conformed to the image of His Son" "until Christ is formed in you" Reproduce ourselves? God forbid! May it never be! Our purpose is never to reproduce ourselves. Rather our purpose and goal is that Christ should be formed in those whom we disciple. God's purpose for His children is that they become conformed to the image of His Son. It is never that they should be reproductions of ourselves. Until Christ Is Formed In You NASB Galatians 4:19 My children, with whom I am again in labor until Christ is formed in you-- AMPLIFIED Galatians 4:19 My little children, for whom I am again suffering birth pangs until Christ is completely and permanently formed (molded) within you, To Become Conformed To The Image Of His Son NASB Romans 8:29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; AMPLIFIED Romans 8:29 For those whom He foreknew [of whom He was aware and loved beforehand], He also destined from the beginning [foreordaining them] to be molded into the image of His Son [and share inwardly His likeness], that He might become the firstborn among many brethren. Zeal and enthusiasm for God are desirable traits. But what KIND of zeal ought we to have? The kind that is "enlightened and according to [correct and vital] knowledge." AMPLIFIED Romans 10:2 I bear them witness that they have a [certain] zeal and enthusiasm for God, but it is not enlightened and according to [correct and vital] knowledge. |
