161 | What if both parties want a divorce? | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 175891
You may have missed the point. I'm not sure how my comment presented as elevating myself over another. Just the opposite was my intent and I believe discernable if you reread it. I was offering my understanding of the topic while at the same time acknowledging that there are those who are much mor knowledgeable regarding the teachings of Scripture than I am. When I make comments like the one you are addressing; it is my way of inviting others to redirect my thinking on a topic. But thanks for the warning. Jeff |

No problem. And that is a good warning to be heeded. I think most of us have gone through that period where we put our faith in another person and listen to there teachings like they were the gospel; even those that weren't. Long past that though. I don't even trust my own understanding anymore. If I can't line it up (so to speak) with Scripture, I don't commit to it. Again, thanks for the consideration, Jeff |

164 | In MRK 14:25 what VINE was He tlking abt | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 176551
Hello sista, I believe that would be the grape vine. Wine was and is made from fermented grapes. You may be looking for a deeper meaning that is not there. Then again, there may be a deeper meaning there that I have not understood. Basically, as I understand it, Jesus was once again making reference to His imminent sacrifice at the cross. Jesus made more than one reference to the fact that He would be put to death. How careful was the attention of those He spoke with is questionable. His statement in Mark 14:25 would seem to be a very obvious declaration that the time was very soon. He would not drink again of the earthly vine, but would soon drink of a Heavenly one. Hope I am accurate on this one. Other's will redirect it and support their responses soon enough. Hope I was helpful, Jeff |

165 | homosexuality | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 178846
hello shake, The bible says that homosexuality is a sin. Doc's pointing you to the search feature (very top of the right menu column) was very good advise. You can read in one hour what would tranlate into many days of posts and responses. In addition, I would point you to the Bible itself. That's is where you will find the best information. Here are some places to start. If you have a reference bible follow the references. If you have a electronic bible library use the search function of that as well. If you don't have an electronic bible study library for your computer you can download a very good one for free at the esword website. Just type in esword in your favorite search engine. Anyway, as promised, here are some places in Scripture to start your study. Leviticus 18:22 (NASB95) 18:22 'You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination. Leviticus 20:13 (NASB95) 20:13 'If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltiness is upon them. Read Romans 1:18-32, 1Corinthians 6: 9-11, and Jude 1:7 (I won't copy and paste for sake of space and time). Anyway, hope this helps get you started. Remember that you will always benefit more if you do the work of studying a topic for yourself to see what God's word has to say. God bless, Jeff |

166 | Multi-Faith Rooms? | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 179000
Hello Jonathan, Welcome to the forum! Let me start by saying that because this forum is dedicated to serious bible study, a casual discussion of your issue here wouldn't be appropriate. Not to minimize your issue, you sound very concerned. Instead, let me just offer some Scriptural references that will give you a starting point to begin dealing with this apparent problem. Consider what the Scriptures say: 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 (NASB95) 6:14 Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? 15 Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever? 16 Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said, "I WILL DWELL IN THEM AND WALK AMONG THEM; AND I WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE. 17 "Therefore, COME OUT FROM THEIR MIDST AND BE SEPARATE," says the Lord. "AND DO NOT TOUCH WHAT IS UNCLEAN; And I will welcome you. 18 "And I will be a father to you, And you shall be sons and daughters to Me," Says the Lord Almighty. I believe Scripture is very clear that God expects His people to be separate. I believe we should welcome anyone into our churches who is willing to come in and listen to the teaching of God's word. But what is accomplished by going into a non-christian church and exposing our minds to the teaching on non-christian doctrines? We have to be aware that we live in a time where Satan is winning the minds and hearts of many, even within the church. The evolving culture of political correctness and relativism is slashing aggressively at the hedges around God's people and His church. As Christians, we have a responsibility; that is, not to intentionally open a gap in those hedges. If you have a reference bible or a electronic bible on your computer, start with the passage I referenced. You will find that God has continuously warned us against trying to live as a part of the world. There are many examples of the consequences of this as well. 1 Corinthians 8:9-12 (NASB95) 8:9 But take care that this liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. 10 For if someone sees you, who have knowledge, dining in an idol's temple, will not his conscience, if he is weak, be strengthened to eat things sacrificed to idols? 11 For through your knowledge he who is weak is ruined, the brother for whose sake Christ died. 12 And so, by sinning against the brethren and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. God bless, Jeff |

167 | How do you balance preaching? | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 179118
Hello Angies, From a lay-persons perspective. You identified two potential audiences; those that will "likely not understand" and those "who need to hear that sermon". Again, I'm a lay person so appreciate my comments with that in mind. First, I believe that a "preacher" should seek the Lord in prayer and prepare the sermon/lesson in accordance with what the Lord has lead. No one in the audience will "understand it" any way, at least not on a significant level, unless the Holy Spirit reveals the truth of the message to him/her. As for those people who "need to hear that sermon". This thought causes me concern as one who sits in the audience. It would concern me to think that my pastor was intentionally targeting individuals or groups to preach at. In my humble opinion, and if I were a preacher, I would consider two types in my congregation; generally speaking. That is, the saved and the unsaved. I would approach it the same way each and every time. As being only the mouth-piece through which God is speaking I would seek His leadership. I have taught the Word in the church setting and have been blessed to stand-in for the pastor and teach from the pulpit on a couple of occassions. What I learned from those experiences, is that the most effort involved in preparing was that time spent in prayer and seeking the Lord's guidance. It might be helpful to consider your audience as being made up of the saved and the unsaved. Preach the Word boldly and sincerely and leave the rest up to God. It's difficult, if not impossible, to know what the Lord has planned for that particular meeting. It may be to save the unsaved that otherwise would have been unable to understand. It may be to convict, reprove, or build the faith of a believer. My guess is that often times both are ocurring. Be faithful to the Lord and know that He is faithful to do His part. Hope this is helpful, God Bless, Jeff |

168 | nature of the holy spirit of god | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 179775
Hello again gdh, Why would anyone want to exclude any portion of Scripture? Why would you request that any proof be "excluded". That is not a good approach to bible study. Try Mark 13:11, who speaks? Luke 12:12, who will teach? John 14:25-26 (NASB95) 14:25 "These things I have spoken to you while abiding with you. 26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. Who will be sent? The Holy Spirit. By whom will He be sent? The Father. In who's name will He be sent? Jesus' The Holy Spirit is a distinct person as clearly taught by Scirpture. He is intelligent (1Cor. 2:10-11) He has a mind (Romans 8:27); He has a will and is purposeful in His actions (1Cor. 12:11) He guides Christians by "hearing", "speaking"and "declaring" things(John 16:13), etc., etc. Although I have only offered a very small amount of Scripture (in comparison to the abundance that is there) clearly showing the Holy Spirit to be a distinct person, I believe it is sufficient. Hope this helps, Jeff |

169 | Is this a genuine study? | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 179916
Paul, you ask an important question; one that deserves an honest answer. In my time participating on the Forum I have discovered that yes, in fact, there is an agenda to this site. In all honesty, it is bible study. Lockman makes it clear in the "Terms of Use". "Lets walk we know not where, Like Abraham". Abraham was commanded by God to leave his place and go to a place that he did not know. His faith was demonstrated through obedience. Thank God for those lessons. I do not find that we are called to do the same thing. We are given a very clear message and a calling just as important as Abraham's. Our obedience is to be to the the word of God as it is clearly stated and able to be understood. True enough that none of us knows all there is to know regarding Scripture and we will continue to learn throughout our lives if we stay in Him. That's why we study. The goal and the duty is to extract our doctrine from the truth of God's word, not to develop wild theories and then compare them to Scripture to see if they might have any validity. This type of approach results in serious error and eventually leads to a false doctrine being taught. So yes, I believe, from what I have seen on the Forum, when a poster is posting rediculous theories and ideas that attempt to "confound accepted beliefs, you will meet with resistance. The more you do it, the more intense the resistance. It will not be tolerated for long. Difficult questions we handle with Scripture according to our knowledge. Superstitions and fanciful ideas are simply just not tolerated. I think it was Doc who suggested to you somewhere that there are other sites out there that do allow their resources for that type of thing. Remember, "accepted beliefs" are accepted for a reason. Those who have gone before us and been proven by time and Scripture to be accurate (though not inspired) have done a great service to the church. I'm thankful to them. The task as individuals is to establish our own firm footing. What arrogance in a man might lead him to believe that God is revealing a new truth to him. And after Thousands of years of God speaking through men, using men to put down His word in writing, and then having that word preached. Honestly brother, do we have time to "walk we know not where" when there is still yet the entirety of God's word to explore and share with the world? The Canon is closed. In brotherly love, Jeff PS. Goodbye is an option you hold. Perhaps it's better to continue to participate with a committment to 2 Timothy 2:15 |

170 | have a quesion? My cousin is 19 and a n | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 179989
Hello scapoferri, Welcome to the Forum. "is there a verse or something..." There are probably a lot of somethings that you might conjure up to dissuade your cousin but your not going to find it in a verse. Actually, I believe if you study God's word you will find just the opposite. The Scriptures teach, in fact, that it is God's intention that there be just one guy for her; and for a believer seeking God's will, that one will be a "gift" from God. Proverbs 19:14 (NASB95) 19:14 House and wealth are an inheritance from fathers, But a prudent wife is from the LORD. You might start with Genesis chapter 2, then chapter 24, then chapter 28. There is much more said in Scripture that should help to correct your thinking in this area, but these chapters are good illustrations of God having a specific person planned for a specific person. For your cousin, the the guy she's "in love" with, might not be the one, but I can't imagine that being your call based on her age alone. I'm curious though. Why would you want to teach a young adult that there is no such thing as "one true love"? Where does your belief come from that there is not "one guy made for her"? Finally, I might add, that if your are concerned about your cousin (and it sounds like you are) wouldn't church be the first place you would hope she would meet someone she might spend the rest of her life with? Hope this is helpful, Jeff |

171 | how do you deal with seeing demons | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 180376
Anto, You should go to your medical doctor. "Seeing demons" may be a symptom of a medical condition (such as a problem with your Thyroid glands) that might be corrected with appropriate treatment. It may also be a symptom of a psychiatric condition, in which case a psychiatrist can assess the symptoms and prescribe medication(s) that might alleviate or decrease the symptoms. In either case, a potential medical cause must be ruled out first. Jeff |

173 | how do you deal with seeing demons | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 180715
Hello anto, It's interesting that you would ask such a question and then reject sound advise. God does give gifts my friend, and one of those gifts is the mirical of modern medicine. Very specifically, there are medications that can help you with both your hallucinations as well as your apparent delusional thinking. My recommendation was not meant as an insult. It was a very serious recommendation and sound advise. Are you able to show in scripture where "seeing demons" is a gift from God. As a matter of fact, can you mention a single example in the bible where any man "saw a demon". Further still, can you give a single example where our Lord Jesus christ, in the flesh, "saw a demon". I would save you some time in telling you not to bother looking because you will not find it. but on the other hand my friend, the time searching will expose you to much needed time in the Scriptures. It's important that we don't attempt to mystify the things of God to include His word to us. I hope you will consider my words seriously, Jeff PS. I am a Christian by the grace of God. |

175 | Is Christmas and 25th Dec. biblical? | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 181052
Hello UncleCnn, Welcome to the forum. Not sure what you mean by "is it Biblical". Christmas is of course the celebration of the birth of Christ. It was not celebrated as an annual holiday until around the forth or fifth century as I remember reading, and If my recollection serves me, it was not referred to as Christmas until some time after that. But the Bible certainly celebrates the birth of Christ, giving a significant amount of space in fortelling it, and telling about it. For a very rich example I would direct you to the book of Luke and just have you begin reading in the first chapter. Early in Chapter 2 you will definately see celebration taking place. As for the exact date that Christ was born, we do not know. But we won't let that stop us from recognizing :) Jeff |

176 | Racial Marriage, is it okay or not? | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 181074
Hello Rancan, The only teaching in Scripture that prohibits one marrying another relating to Believers marrying unbelievers. 2 Corinthians 6:14-15 (NASB95) 6:14 Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? 15 Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever?" Of course, the Bible teaches that marriage is to be between one man and one woman. The color of skin, country of origin, background, etc. does not rule a person in or out as a potential mate. For a believer though, we are not to marry an unbeliever. Hope this helps, Jeff |

177 | Verses That Point to No Races? | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 181080
thenoel2, Semantics can complicate even the most simple thought. Certainly there is more than one race when ethnicity and culture is the focus. It might be argued too that there are only two races of man, the saved and the unsaved. Still throw out the semantics and focus on the question or concern. If your need is to "defend this notion by specific verses..." and if we are still talking about the issue of marriage, I would argue that you are taking on a task that need not be taken on. If someone wants to challenge interracial marriage by pointing to the Scirptures, the task is theirs to prove the point. They won't be able to. Jeff |

178 | what is the trininty? | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 181096
Hello BabyBear, Welcome to the Forum. I could probably confuse you all day long if I tried to explain the mystery of the trinity in detail. But I wanted to give you something while your waiting on a more capable member to answer. "Theological term used to define God as an undivided unity expressed in the threefold nature of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. As a distinctive Christian doctrine, the Trinity is considered as a divine mystery beyond human comprehension to be reflected upon only through scriptural revelation. The Trinity is a biblical concept that expresses the dynamic character of God, not a Greek idea pressed into Scripture from philosophical or religious speculation. While the term “trinity” does not appear in Scripture, the trinitarian structure appears throughout the NT to affirm that God Himself is manifested through Jesus Christ by means of the Spirit. A proper biblical view of the Trinity balances the concepts of unity and distinctiveness. —Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary There is much more said about the trinity in the single quoted volume alone. I copied and pasted just a portion in order to honor the Terms of Use of the Forum and so as not to infringe on the copyright. Hope this helps, Jeff |

179 | EITHER WE OR IT, WHICH IS WRONG? | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 181155
Hello UncleCnn, Anything I say about the specific date of December 25th would be either a guess or simply repeating what I have heard or read. The truth is, I don't know why that date. "No evidence remains about the exact date of the birth of Christ. The December 25 date was chosen as much for practical reasons as for theological ones. Throughout the Roman Empire, various festivals were held in conjunction with the winter solstice. In Rome, the Feast of the Unconquerable Sun celebrated the beginning of the return of the sun. When Christianity became the religion of the Empire, the church either had to suppress the festivals or transform them. The winter solstice seemed an appropriate time to celebrate Christ’s birth. Thus, the festival of the sun became a festival of the Son, the Light of the world."—Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary All that stuff you said about how the Christmas "holiday" is lived out in society today is true. You stated, "IT'S EITHER WE DON'T DO IT RIGHT OR THAT IT'S NOT RIGHT" My vote is that we are not doing it right. I don't believe I could agree with any argument that says it's wrong to celebrate the birth of our Lord. After all, the Scriptures celebrate it. What we can know for sure though, is that Satan and his minions work hard and constantly to destroy everything good and to pervert the things of God and His people. Look at what has become of the institution of marriage; but we wouldn't argue that marriage is wrong. Christmas is the day set aside to honor and rejoice in celebration of our Lord's birth. It is an offense to the world. The world will not cease in trying to destroy it. The date is not important. The meaning is what's important. Isaiah 53:4 (NASB95) 53:4 Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted. Praise the Lord Christ. Jeff |
