661 | what is the trininty? | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 181096
Hello BabyBear, Welcome to the Forum. I could probably confuse you all day long if I tried to explain the mystery of the trinity in detail. But I wanted to give you something while your waiting on a more capable member to answer. "Theological term used to define God as an undivided unity expressed in the threefold nature of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. As a distinctive Christian doctrine, the Trinity is considered as a divine mystery beyond human comprehension to be reflected upon only through scriptural revelation. The Trinity is a biblical concept that expresses the dynamic character of God, not a Greek idea pressed into Scripture from philosophical or religious speculation. While the term “trinity” does not appear in Scripture, the trinitarian structure appears throughout the NT to affirm that God Himself is manifested through Jesus Christ by means of the Spirit. A proper biblical view of the Trinity balances the concepts of unity and distinctiveness. —Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary There is much more said about the trinity in the single quoted volume alone. I copied and pasted just a portion in order to honor the Terms of Use of the Forum and so as not to infringe on the copyright. Hope this helps, Jeff |

662 | 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 WHO? | 2 Thess 2:7 | jlhetrick | 181094
Hello Cuddle, Please don't take my words out of context. If my post was confusing to you, thank you for stating the obvious. but we must be careful not to make it a play on words. To clarify my point in the previous post. If the churuch is the restrainer (which neither of us are teaching and/or appear to believe) it would only be possible in that the Holy Spirit is at work in the church. We the people, the body of believers, would have no power what ever to restrain anything, including our own nature, much less the antichrist. Hope this clears up my position. God bless, Jeff |

663 | 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 WHO? | 2 Thess 2:7 | jlhetrick | 181092
Yes, Cuddle thank you. I too looked up the Greek. But the question is, "stay", "abide", "remain" where? "with you" as it's stated in the verse. So regarding this, where will He remain in the rapture? It is already established by Scripture that the Holy Ghost is a person of the triune God. He is omnipresent. This promise in John does not effect that. He was present before as we see Him descending on Christ and leading Him into the desert after John baptized Him. We see Him over and over again in the OT. The promise in John 14:16 is that related to the work of the Holy Ghost in the ministry of the apostles and I believe all Christians. It has nothing to do with the existance of the Holy Ghost in all places in all time. He is omnipresent. So relating the verse to the question and topic at hand just isn't necessary and accomplishes nothing toward our understanding of who the "restrainer" is. This is the point I am trying to make. To establish that the Holy Spirit is not the restrainer requires a corroborated argument from Scripture as presented by CDBJ. Pointing to a verse out of context will not accomplish the task. I'm glad you do not see me as being 'arguementitive" because I certainly am not trying to be. How else do we adhere to 2Timothy 2:15 if not a careful consideration of the text. As far as I'm concerned you are a breath of fresh air on the Forum. Thanks for your contribution. God bless, Jeff |

664 | 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 WHO? | 2 Thess 2:7 | jlhetrick | 181088
Jesus didn't say the Holy Spirit would "remain" forever. He said that the Holy Spirit will "stay with you" forever. Again, I'm not arguing the identify of the "restrainer" just clarifying the text. God bless, Jeff |

665 | 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 WHO? | 2 Thess 2:7 | jlhetrick | 181086
Hello again Cuddle, As I stated in my earlier post, I too lean toward the angel Michael being the restrainer after having read CDBJ's post. My post was in response to your focusing on John 14:16 and believing that New Creature's believing the Holy Spirit to be the restrainer was in conflict with that verse. My intent was to point out that NC's argument does not conflict with the verse based on the argument that I presented. As for the church being the restrainer, that is a long-standing position taken by some as well. I guess the best reply to that is, Christ is the head of the church, and the Holy Spirit is the person who empowers the church. We, the church, do nothing on our own. Following logically, I believe that saying the church is the restrainer would be equal to saying the Holy Spirit is the restrainer. Your thoughts, :) Jeff |

666 | Verses That Point to No Races? | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 181080
thenoel2, Semantics can complicate even the most simple thought. Certainly there is more than one race when ethnicity and culture is the focus. It might be argued too that there are only two races of man, the saved and the unsaved. Still throw out the semantics and focus on the question or concern. If your need is to "defend this notion by specific verses..." and if we are still talking about the issue of marriage, I would argue that you are taking on a task that need not be taken on. If someone wants to challenge interracial marriage by pointing to the Scirptures, the task is theirs to prove the point. They won't be able to. Jeff |

668 | Racial Marriage, is it okay or not? | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 181074
Hello Rancan, The only teaching in Scripture that prohibits one marrying another relating to Believers marrying unbelievers. 2 Corinthians 6:14-15 (NASB95) 6:14 Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? 15 Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever?" Of course, the Bible teaches that marriage is to be between one man and one woman. The color of skin, country of origin, background, etc. does not rule a person in or out as a potential mate. For a believer though, we are not to marry an unbeliever. Hope this helps, Jeff |

669 | 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 WHO? | 2 Thess 2:7 | jlhetrick | 181072
Hello Cuddle, I too appreciated CDBJ's post and believe that he might even be right regarding the identity of the "restrainer". But let us not forget that there are many bible scholars out there that do disagree with this. I believe that New Creature's comment regarding the Rapture should not be tossed aside. I had anxiously followed with the intention of bringing attention to the rapture if New Creature did not do it soon. The reason this is an important consideration is that it may actually be that you are reading into the verse somewhat. It is perfectly logical and theologically sound to consider that the "retainer" may in fact be the Holy Spirit. Arguing His omnipresence only makes sense if we are interpreting that the "taken away" to mean He, the retainer, will no longer be present. This would not hold to scrutinity of Scripture however, consider John 15:26. Jesus said "when the Helper comes..."whom I will send..." There has never been any debate (that I am aware of) that this passage is referring to the Holy Spirit (and Jesus refers to Him as "the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father). So was the Holy Spirit omnipresent at that time? The Scriptures teach that He is the third person in the godhead. He is God, without beginning and without end and His nature has not developed over time. What then are we to make of it? I suggest that just as Jesus has always existed, there was a time in time where he manifested in a new role when He was "sent" to be born of Mary's womb. There was also a time when He was "taken away" and there will be a time when He "returns". The same can be agrued regarding the Holy Spirit if He in fact is the restrainer. It may be that He was "sent" in the sense of fulfilling the restraining role and at a time in the future will be "taken away" (at the rapture) or removed from the task of that role. I hope this is helpful, Jeff |

CDBJ, Though I have been aware of the differing thoughts regarding this "restrainer" and have read to a degree about it, I have never heard or read what you have presented. Interestingly, the Scriptures seem to support that the restrainer is Michael the archangel. In any case, the way you brought these passages to bear on the subject was very helpful and exciting reading. Thanks, Jeff |

673 | Is Christmas and 25th Dec. biblical? | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 181052
Hello UncleCnn, Welcome to the forum. Not sure what you mean by "is it Biblical". Christmas is of course the celebration of the birth of Christ. It was not celebrated as an annual holiday until around the forth or fifth century as I remember reading, and If my recollection serves me, it was not referred to as Christmas until some time after that. But the Bible certainly celebrates the birth of Christ, giving a significant amount of space in fortelling it, and telling about it. For a very rich example I would direct you to the book of Luke and just have you begin reading in the first chapter. Early in Chapter 2 you will definately see celebration taking place. As for the exact date that Christ was born, we do not know. But we won't let that stop us from recognizing :) Jeff |

674 | wandering eyes | Gen 1:1 | jlhetrick | 180984
Hello sour, It's not that people are attacking you, but rather your incoherent attempt to rationalize the irrational, seriously. If and when you do pick up a bible I recommend reading Romans chapter 1 verses 18-32. It describes your path perfectly I'm affraid. I have known several people who have chosen not to open and read the bible. A few of them have been honest enought to acknowledge that they will not because they know something in their life is sinful and wrong such as, say......homosexuality??? You gave your reason for regisering on the forum but might I suggest that there was and is something much bigger behind it. Perhaps, instead of "turning other's backs on God", the empty darkness that you define as "happiness" may have light exploded into it?? With that said, let me suggest to you that philosophical daydreaming, no matter how incoherently it is presented, is not what Lockman provides this Forum for. Please read the Terms of Use and About the Forum sections and adhere to those terms that you agreed to when registering. We will all appreciate and respect you for that. Sincerely, Jeff |

675 | When is the revelation clear | Acts 17:30 | jlhetrick | 180983
Hello Finder, I believe my response should start with asking the question to you, are you saved. If you are not, then the Scriptures teach that not only have you rejected God, but you are continuing in that rejection. It's not my word that declares that ALL have rejected or sinned against God. It was and is plain in the Scriptures I posted in my previous response. Furthermore, anytime we sin, we reject God. If you can not remember sinning, take the word of God at face value and know that you have and so have I. 1John 1:10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives. (NIV) You see friend, in the passage of Romans 1:18-32 it's not teaching that the truth of God was not recognized or that the truth of God was not understood and believed, quite the opposite. Instead, it is teaching that when the truth was known, man chose his own course, rejecting God's plan. Knowing something of God and then choosing to do what is contrary to His design and plan is the rejection. Romans 1:21-23 (NIV) 21For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles." Again, you may not accept the truth that you, like every other human person besides Christ, has sinned by putting self before God; but again, the Scirptures should settle that issue as quoted above. Finder, in anticipation of your response and answer to your salvation let me say this. In saving you, God will require that you ackowledge that you are a sinner in need of salvation. As the Scripture says, if you are unable or unwilling to do this, "His word has no place in your life". I assure you that my response is sincere and I am not attempting to read into your statements. Please let me address something else you said. You wrote: "The only opportunity I am conscious of coming to know the revelation of God was after investing LOTS of time searching on the Internet since 2002 until now, and I still think I don't know everything" While there are many internet sights that I would recommend to include this one, they are no substitute for the bible itself. If you have a bible please spend more time in it with prayerful consideration vs. searching the net. If you do not have a bible email me, I will send you one. Finally, we don't need to worry ourselves with the access or ability to understand of others beyond our being obedient in "rightly dividing the word of truth" (2Tim 2:15) while proclaiming the gospel. Remember what I said in the previous post. If God intends to save the guy behind the tree at the end of that long-lost path deep in the darkest depths of the most dense jungle, He will save that one. As for the understanding; not a one of us has had the understanding until the almighty, sovereign God gave it. Hope my responses continue to be helpful. God bless, Jeff PS. my email address is shown in my user profile. |

676 | How deep can the Gospel go | Acts 17:30 | jlhetrick | 180907
Hello Finder, Allow me to add something to the conversation please. I believe that when we consider the passage in Romans in the wider context of what the Scriptures teach (to include immediate context) I think it begins to make more sense. The passage in Romans isn't speaking to salvation but rather damnation, at least the utter fallen state of mankind. I'm not seeing it taught here at all that God's revelation in nature is what saves. Salvation comes by God's grace, through faith in Christ and by no other means as the Scriptures plainly teach. Later in the book (ch. 5) we see that the wrath spoken of in chapter 1 is something man can be saved from, being "justified by His blood (Romans 5:9). The next two verses make it very clear. "Rom 5:10-11 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. (ESV) "..for while we were enemies..."(v. 10). When were we enemies? It's spelled out very clearly in Romans 1:18-32. The problem isn't in that some may never have the opportunity to here the gospel of Jesus Christ. The problem is that all, ALL, have had the truth of God revealed to them and all, including you and me, have rejected that. So, verse 20, we are all without excuse (Romans 3:23) So reconciliation is necessary! And how is that? Clearly presented as quoted above in Romans 5:10-11. It is by His death that we are reconciled and His resurrection that we have eternal life. God uses people to preach the Gospel. As a result, we might tend to give ourselves too much credit. God's saving a soul is not, and has never been dependent on someone hacking through just the right jungle trail to happenstance uppon the poor waiting lost soul there behind the tree. The effectual calling that results in reconciliation and eternal life is that calling of God alone. He may use a man to initiate it, but that poor creature does not effect it. Salvation belongs to the Lord, and to those He justly chooses in grace. If it were anything else, the cross would be of no use. Ours is to be obedient, trusting that He will complete His plan justly. And He is faithful. Hope this helps some, Jeff |

Hello cuddle, Welcome to the Forum my friend. So your new to the "forum deal"? No problem. Allow me to give a few pointers that will apply here at SBF. 1. If you feel any offense regarding what someone has posted to you, YOU should re-read their post carefully. Remember a lot is missing in the communication process when we only have the words on screen. I can assure you that Doc would not have responded at all to your post without having first read it carefully and with sufficient consideration. 2. This is a forum for bible study. If you post something, expect a response. Don't expect that every response will agree with you. 3. Personal opinion and experience are considered of little value without the correlating support/confirmation of Scripture. Well, I said I would give a few pointers so I will stop there. The best advise might be to spend more time reading than posting in the beginning. This adds to a better appreciation of the regular posters that you will deal mostly with (the strengths and weakness of each). I'm glad for the affection you show for the local church. Praise God for that and may you contribute to it's spiritual growth. know too that it is that same love and affection for the Church that promotes criticism of the abominations we are seeing today in the church. in the love of Christ, Jeff PS. You should reconsider wanting to block Doc from posting to you. I'm speaking from experience after having put my own above advise to practice on this forum. You will learn from Doc a lot more often than you will be offended. |

Hello Wars, Welcome to the Forum. A church is a building; especially for Christian public worship (Webster) As Christians we also refer to the entire body of believers in Christ as THE church. That is, the Church established by Christ and not man; made up of all persons who have been called by God and saved. Christ is the head of the Christian Church and His word, the Holy Bible is the authoraty from which church doctrine is established. While the true Church (body of believers) has many different denominations (i.e., Methodist, Baptist, etc.) none of those denominations is the church any more than any human person is. Hope this will help. Jeff |

680 | how do you deal with seeing demons | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 180715
Hello anto, It's interesting that you would ask such a question and then reject sound advise. God does give gifts my friend, and one of those gifts is the mirical of modern medicine. Very specifically, there are medications that can help you with both your hallucinations as well as your apparent delusional thinking. My recommendation was not meant as an insult. It was a very serious recommendation and sound advise. Are you able to show in scripture where "seeing demons" is a gift from God. As a matter of fact, can you mention a single example in the bible where any man "saw a demon". Further still, can you give a single example where our Lord Jesus christ, in the flesh, "saw a demon". I would save you some time in telling you not to bother looking because you will not find it. but on the other hand my friend, the time searching will expose you to much needed time in the Scriptures. It's important that we don't attempt to mystify the things of God to include His word to us. I hope you will consider my words seriously, Jeff PS. I am a Christian by the grace of God. |
