221 | What do we need to know about God | John 17:3 | jlhetrick | 208489
jamison- may I recommend that you reread Azure's post. You wrote: "it stands to reason that Jesus answered his question". The point here is that attempting to reason without considering context is not a ratinoal approach when trying to discern the message. Consider some important points here including the following. 1. The man confessed to have followed the commandments since his youth. Answer: We know, as did Christ, that this was an impossibility. 2. Was Jesus telling the man that following the commandments and then selling all he had and distributing it to the poor would earn him Heanen? Answer, if you believe that then you rule out that salvation is through Christ and Him alone. One would be advocating salvation by works. Jesus asked the young man an important question. "Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone". That's the beginning of the immediate context. Christ then refers to the law, which no man can fully keep. Continue to consider the context. The young ruler never misses a beat. In his own praise of himself he confesses to have kept the law. Christ knew better of course, so why the statement about the man's riches? Was Jesus giving the man a formula for salvation? 1. Follow these commandments. 2. Sell everything you own. 3. Distribute the profits of your sell to the poor. 4. Follow me Of course not and there is no way to rationally draw that conclusion from scripture. Christ was not telling the man how to get to Heaven. He was clearly showing the man the condition of his own heart. He was self-righteous and not willing to part from his earthly riches. Even if Heaven were available to him for a price (which it was and is not), the man was not willing to pay it. By the way, if we "step outside the box of standard theology.." where do you think we would be standing??? Isn't that a dangerous and scary place to go? God bless, Jeff |

225 | Christians VS Dinosaurs... whats up? | OT general | jlhetrick | 207839
HappyCamper- Welcome to the forum. Simply put, your theology is incorrect; no insult to you, lots of us are brought up being told things that just aren't true. However, it's our responsibility to seek the turth and wisdom of God as found in Scripture and not believe everyting we're told. I gather from your user profile that you already understand that. Your post is the very first time that I have ever heard anyone state that Christians do not believe in dinosaurs. Not sure where you got that information but I suspect you have confused the issue of dinosaurs with the scientific "theory" of evolution. Where this theory is in conflict with Scripture true Christians believe the Creator God vs. the thoeries of created man. Dinosaurs were flesh and bone creatures and I know of no Christian who denies that fact. As for the "creature that the women mated with? you can find that throughout Scripture beginning with Genisis. Adam was the first and with Eve. God created man and woman and ordained marriage between them as the institution through which procreation occurs. Hope this is helpful. God bless, Jeff |

226 | sending or being sent? | Not Specified | jlhetrick | 206206
Isa 48:16 (ESV) 16 Draw near to me, hear this: from the beginning I have not spoken in secret, from the time it came to be I have been there." And now the Lord God has sent me, and his Spirit." Isa 48:16 (KJV) 16 Come ye near unto me, hear ye this; I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I: and now the Lord God, and his Spirit, hath sent me. KJV For those original language scholars, which translation best represents the original language? For others, please do not enter into a debate regarding which translation if "the best". Not my concern here even If I believed an answer. I'm engaged in a study and wanted to know if the Spirit participated in the sending (as the KJV indicates) or was also being sent (as the ESV indicates). Thanks in advance for your responses. God bless, Jeff |

Hello J.P You should contact blueletterbible.org to inquire about their site. This would be a real mess if people started offering thoughts, suggestions, speculations, etc. about another site and might even lead to a liability issue for the gracious host of this site, the Lockman Foundation. 230 | Joseph's Death? | NT general | jlhetrick | 206138
Kit...- is it ok to call you Kit or would you rather the whole username?? Inquiring minds.... yes, yes, yes.... me too. Some do "assume" that Joseph may have deceased since Mary is mentioned several times after and he is not. But in the abscense of documentation, assumption is all we're left with. I'm not aware of any secular records that mention the time and manner of Jospeh's death (though some of the more scholarly here might be). Jeff |

231 | Were the disciples saved, Born Again? | NT general | jlhetrick | 206137
Not sure which disciples you mean, but if your speaking ot the 12 apostles see the following. Acts 1:24-2:4 24 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, who knowest the hearts of all men, show of these two the one whom thou hast chosen, 25 to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas fell away, that he might go to his own place. 26 And they gave lots for them; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles. 2 And when the day of Pentecost was now come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound as of the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them tongues parting asunder, like as of fire; and it sat upon each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 235 | Relationship of God's word to prayer | Matt 6:5 | jlhetrick | 206002
Melquisedec- what does your user name mean?? Welcome to the forum. May I request that you update your User Info. so that we might know something about you (not required). If I may quote DocTrinsograce (a participant here) in his post# 170353 he stated the following. "We are to live by every word of God. Men were meant to be directed always and continually by God. We know this because that is how God dealt with Adam before the fall. Even man in his sinless, perfect state needed to be told who he was, why he existed, what and how he was to do the tasks God gave to him." (See Luke 4:4 as a reference.) The Scripture establishes that our lives are to be lived in accordance with God's word. Knowing that, our prayers should be in accordance with God's word. A study of what prayer is (should be) is necessary and so I encourage you to embark on this. Prayer, be it a petition on the behalf of others, ourselves, a situation, should be approached in accordance with God's will which we can only begin to discern through Scripture. Our attitude should be in reverence, praise and worship with all thanks. We might think of Peter praying for Christ's deliverance from the Cross. (Matthew 16:21-23). His intentions were honorable, but completely out of the plan and will of God. The following verses (24-26) continues to give insight (from our Lord Himself) into this. I tend to believe that most people petition the Lord for their own needs first and some only seek Him at all when they are in dire straits. At those times, it's easy to see how the focus might be on self. I'm not sure that even immediately after being rebuked face-to-face by the Lord Himself that Peter, in the above example, understood his own error. It was likely sometime after the ressurection that Peter understood it sufficiently. Hope this gets the topic started. Others much more prepaired will chime in soon. God bless, Jeff |
