21 | Does the Holy Spirit work differently? | Bible general Archive 2 | ischus | 115243
Sorry Ray, I didn't mean to use "it" in refering to the Spirit. I'm not sure that "He" is correct either. Are you sure that pneuma and ruach always occur with a masculine article? The bible seems to have no issue with the gender of the Spirit, and I don't think we should focus on this either. ischus |

23 | Where is the Sinners Prayer | Bible general Archive 2 | ischus | 115362
Hi Applejack! The sinners prayer can be found in many places (do an internet search), however, you won't find it in the bible, because it is not very biblical. In the 1800's a man named Charles Finney invented this prayer, and it has become an infatuation to many different groups of believers. There is nothing wrong with the prayer itself, but the implications that people make about it are very misleading. Many people say that you can just say the prayer and be saved. This is just not true. If you would like some more information on the sinner's prayer, you can go to the following site: http://christian-truth.org/prayer/sinners.html ischus |

25 | Get'g the right message from our Bibles? | Bible general Archive 2 | ischus | 115541
Rowdy, I really think that this message is vital and needed. Jesus Christ needs to be the focus, and everything else must grow out of our relationship with HIM. I think that in a forum like this, where we like to look at sub-categories of less importance, that we need to keep this in mind. I think that we sometimes struggle with our love for the word and the study of becoming more of a focus than the one Who the word is about. It is healthy to look at and admire a telescope, but if all we do is look AT it, we will never look THROUGH it to the thing it is designed to point to- Jesus. Great thoughts... ischus |

26 | Free will verses destiny? | Bible general Archive 2 | ischus | 115553
jjg, The issue in your title does not match the issue in your post. One is about free will/ predestination, and the other is about God's foreknowledge, all of which have been discussed in detail on many occasions on this forum, and can be found in the quick search box. ischus |

Brendac, It sounds like you would be most benefitted by a bible dictionary or encyclopedia. You can find many of these online, or at a theological library. If you still can't find the info you need, I would be glad to email some good stuff on several of the names. ischus |

Brenda, It is well documented in many places as to the source for Jehovah. I think that in all five of the references that I gave you at the end you will find a comment about that. As for Yahweh, the definitions you have given are good too. There is so much in this name that it is hard to state it all concisely, but I would recommend that it is not God who "changes not" (although this is true) but that it is rather God who "causes things to change." This is more accurate in light of the context of the exodus, and the other places where Yahweh is used are also more along this line. But what you say is also a valid definition. ischus |

Also, when you mention the SELF EXISTENT ONE- this is kind of tricky: "Yahweh" is actually a 3rd-person-causitive form of the word, "Hiyah." Hiyah is the word in Ex.3 translated as 'I AM' and this is the SELF EXISTENT ONE. BUT- Yahweh is the 3rd person (he,she,it,or the one) causitive( meaning active or causing) form. That is why I give you the other definition, which is more active and more causal: "The one who causes things to happen." ischus |

35 | who benefits most from prayer? | Bible general Archive 2 | ischus | 115962
Three things: 1) I think that when someone engages in conversation with God they are blessed by God, God is Blessed by them, those who they pray for are blessed by God, and God is blessed by being a blessing to them. So...if you want to go by the tally system it is God who is the most blessed in prayer. 2) I truly believe in the power of praying the word of God recorded in Scripture. There is great power in using God's word for healing, strength, comfort, etc. BUT- I think that prayer is more spiritual that physical, meaning that it is not necessarily the words spoken, but the heart that it comes from- the faith that it comes from. Even if someone doesn't speak a single word, when they meditate or internally pray God's word, they are praying words of power. Even the HS tells God what is in our heart if it is not able to be communicated with words. 3) As far as this whole conversation goes, it truly depends on one's worldview and where they are from. In the Western part of the world we are so naturalistic and scientifically enlightened that we miss out on a lot of the spiritual realities and powers of prayer. Those cultures which are non-western have greater insights into prayer, and their advice should be taken well. ischus |

JL, Hello! I think that God is blessed jus as much as we are in the mutual relationship the we share together. He gets hurt just as much, he rejoices just as much, and he gets blessed just as much. Although God is omnipotent, one of the thingshe can't do is make us love him or trust him or talk to him. When we do these things, he is blessed! In regard to your second statement, I don't think that numbers matter in prayer. What matters is the faith of the people. Of course God's will always overrides the faithful request if the prayer is not in what God sees as the wisest or best thing, but faith, not numbers, is definitely the key to prayer. God really cares about and seeks faith more than he does healing or physical blessing of his people. Don't get me wrong- God loves to physically bless, but what he cares about more than anything else is our faith and trust in him despite our circumstances (Lk. 18:1-8) Finally, I am comparing christians in different parts of the world. I don't remember, but I think I might have used the term 'worldview' and that is why you are unclear here, but worldview does not refer to ones religion or faith- It refers to your assumptions about the world, meaning that where you live and the environment you grow up in affects the way you perceive prayer. What I meant was that non-western people are far more spiritually-focussed and far less influenced by our naturalistic approach to God and prayer. I appreciate your comments. I don't know if this helped or made things more unclear, but whatever you need clarification in I will be happy to explain further. ischus |

37 | who benefits most from prayer? | Bible general Archive 2 | ischus | 116011
jal, Hey- Thanks for that post; I really think that you are the first person that I have ever agreed with on every point in a post with more than one sentence. :) About blessing God, The bible has a lot to say about this. Look in a concordance under the word 'bless' and you will see the many times that the bible speaks of blessing the Lord. [By the way, some translations, like the NIV, will translate this word for 'bless' as 'praise' which is not wrong, but does not give the full sense of the word. Also, think about the Lord's Supper (communion, eucharist... I don't know what you call it). The cup of the Passover that Jesus used to institute the "eucharist" is called the cup of blessing- us blessing God and God blessing us... is it mutual and reciprocal. ischus |

EVERYONE: I AM NO LONGER WELCOME ON THIS FORUM, SO INSTEAD OF REMAINING HERE UNDER OPPOSITION I WILL ELECT TO LEAVE FOR A TIME. I HAVE BEEN CALLED A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT THINGS HERE, AND BECAUSE I AM DIFFERENT THAN THE POWERS THAT BE I AM CHARGED WITH BLASHPEMY AND DISRESPECT. WHEN A YOUNG PERSON COMES TO A PLACE LIKE THIS, YOU WOULD THINK THAT HE WOULD BE ENCOURAGED TO KEEP SEEKING AND STUDYING. YOU WOULD THINK THAT HE WOULD BE GIVEN GRACE AND PATIENCE. YOU WOULD THINK THAT HE WOULD BE DIRECTED IN LOVE BY HIS ELDERS, AND WHEN HE IS LACKING IN MATURITY THAT HIS ELDERS WOULD TREAT HIM WITH LOVE AND NOT HATE. I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT THE EXACT OPPOSITE MESSAGE WAS SENT TO ME NUMEROUS TIMES, AND WHATEVER MAY BE WRITTEN ABOUT ME AFTER I AM GONE, MAY IT BE MEASURED AGAINST THE WORDS THAT I HAVE WRITTEN IN MY POSTS. THIS IS NOT A PLACE FOR GROWTH- THIS IS A PLACE FOR NEEDLESS ARGUMENT AND FOOLISH DOCTRINES. I HAVE TAKEN PART IN BOTH OF THESE, AND I CAN SEE WHY THERE ARE CERTAIN PEOPLE WHO STAY HERE NO MATTER HOW WORTHLESS IT GETS... IT IS SO THAT ANY LITTLE PERSON WHO COMES BY WITH A QUESTION CAN BE SUCKED IN TO THEIR OWN THEOLOGY INSTEAD OF BEING LED TO JESUS CHRIST. THIS IS THE WORST EXPERIENCE OF CHRISTIANITY THAT I HAVE EVER TAKEN PART IN. I ONLY WISH THAT IT DIDN'T HAVE TO HAPPEN TO THE ONE WHO WILL INNOCENTLY JOIN TOMORROW, AFTER THIS POST IS ERASED.
