21 | Fear of praying in public out loud? | John 11:42 | ipl | 243466
Ecclesiastes 5:1-3 (NASB) 1 Guard your steps as you go to the house of God and draw near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools; for they do not know they are doing evil. 2 Do not be hasty in word or impulsive in thought to bring up a matter in the presence of God. For God is in heaven and you are on the earth; therefore let your words be few. 3 For the dream comes through much effort and the voice of a fool through many words. Matthew 6:5-6 (NASB) 5 “When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. 6 But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. |

23 | Protecting the Unborn? | Ex 20:13 | ipl | 243433
Ex 21:22-25 (NASB) 22 If men struggle with each other and strike a woman with child so that she gives birth prematurely, yet there is no injury, he shall surely be fined as the woman’s husband may demand of him, and he shall pay as the judges decide. 23 But if there is any further injury, then you shall appoint as a penalty life for life, 24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise. Ex 21:22-25 (NRSV) 22 When people who are fighting injure a pregnant woman so that there is a miscarriage, and yet no further harm follows, the one responsible shall be fined what the woman’s husband demands, paying as much as the judges determine. 23 If any harm follows, then you shall give life for life, 24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe. Num 5:27 (NASB) 27 When he has made her drink the water, then it shall come about, if she has defiled herself and has been unfaithful to her husband, that the water which brings a curse will go into her and cause bitterness, and her abdomen will swell and her thigh will waste away, and the woman will become a curse among her people. Num 5:27 (NIV) 27 If she has made herself impure and been unfaithful to her husband, this will be the result: When she is made to drink the water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering, it will enter her, her abdomen will swell and her womb will miscarry, and she will become a curse. Eccl 6:3-5 (NASB) 3 If a man fathers a hundred children and lives many years, however many they be, but his soul is not satisfied with good things and he does not even have a proper burial, then I say, “Better the miscarriage than he, 4 for it comes in futility and goes into obscurity; and its name is covered in obscurity. 5 It never sees the sun and it never knows anything; it is better off than he. Eccl 6:3-5 (JUB) 3 If a man begets a hundred sons and lives many years so that the days of his years are many, if his soul is not filled with good and also that he have no burial; I say that an aborted birth is better than he. 4 For he came in vain and departs unto darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness. 5 Even though he has not seen the sun nor known any thing; this one has more rest than the other. Job 3:12 (NASB) Why did the knees receive me, And why the breasts, that I should suck? Job 3:12 (TLB) Why did the midwife let me live? Why did she nurse me at her breasts? Mark 14:21 (NASB) For the Son of Man is to go just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born. |

25 | Biblical reasons for divorce? | 1 Cor 7:15 | ipl | 243424
If the person who chooses to leave the marriage is judged to be an unbeliever then the believer is free to divorce and possibly remarry. Not sure who should be making such a judgement before the appointed time because of warning in the parable of the wheat and the tares in Matt 13 but maybe the one leaving made the judgement on themself. 1 Cor 7:12-15 12 But to the rest I say, not the Lord, that if any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, he must not divorce her. 13 And a woman who has an unbelieving husband, and he consents to live with her, she must not send her husband away. 14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified through her believing husband; for otherwise your children are unclean, but now they are holy. 15 Yet if the unbelieving one leaves, let him leave; the brother or the sister is not under bondage in such cases, but God has called us to peace. 1 Cor 6:9-10 9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. Gal 5:19-21 19 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, 21 envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Eph 5:5 For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. |

26 | How long is a Sabbath day walk? | Acts 1:12 | ipl | 243120
The book of Joshua does not mention the Sabbath by name. It must have been one of the seven days that Jericho was to be marched around. Josh 3:4 does not set the limit on how far someone is to travel somewhere. It is setting the minimum distance to stay behind the ark of the covenant when it is moved.
27 | Three Days and Three Nights | Bible general Archive 4 | ipl | 243106
Is the following statement in Hesiod's "Works and Days" a satisfactory example? "Show them to the sun ten days and ten nights ...". Nothing can be shown to the sun during the night. I found a post on academia.edu that is very insightful called "Counting of days and nights in the Bible". Unfortunately it lacks citations. Maybe you can contact the author at sil.org for possible examples.

Doc was responding to my answer that has been removed. The answer was not Biblically based. I was not recommending what those texts said but pointing out the use of the same idiom.
34 | Documentation Request | Bible general Archive 4 | ipl | 242253
That would take some closer reading of the texts to determine. In Matt 4:2 Jesus fasts 40 days and 40 nights then becomes hungry. Other than being sinless why wouldn't he be hungry much sooner. In Deut 9:9,18 Moses not only doesn't eat he also doesn't drink. People can't go 40 days without water unless its a miracle. Because the form x days and x nights are only used for 3, 7 and 40 in the Bible it seems symbolic.

37 | When will the Antichrist come ? | 1 John 2:18 | ipl | 241807
IThe note you posted after me this weekend that was removed has a response listed as coming an hour and 9 minutes later. If the removal was after that, was it immediate? You have brought up Mat 18:15. Your analogy is that the forum is a room. Being taken off the home page is moving the discussion in private as in Mat 18:15. Having people email or phone you does not protect their privacy if they want to be anonymous. You agreed to the guidelines and the terms of use when you registered. Anyone of age that agrees to the TOU can participate. That means non Christians can also join and ask their questions. There is no "moderator" that approves things before they post. Anyone can report abuse. I don't know if Lockman has any programs to deal with some things or if it is all reviewed by a person. It says the removal of a thread from a home page is temporary and you have seen things go back. You can still post to threads not on the home page. If there is a heated discussion going on you will see the numbers on the side of the homepage jump more than usual. Do a search for the missing numbers to see whats happening. And since you can do that the privacy is not perfect.
38 | Defend the Offender-Attack the Offended? | Bible general | ipl | 241793
In 241744 you placed your phone number presumably because you thought the thread was restricted. If you want it removed I suggest you select that post from the "tree" and then click on the abuse button and ask Lockman if they would remove it.
