Matthew 5:38-45 Someone mentioned Jesus' teaching about turning the other cheek in this situation. I was taught (sorry, I don't remember where) that the key to this lesson was not to be a pushover and take whatever someone dishes out without responding. The key was in the WAY one would get slapped. Because a left-handed (think clean/dirty hand) slap would provoke a throwdown, the first slap would be with the backhand of the right, which is an insult from a superior, so the second would be an OPEN PALM from the right, which means "I'm giving you a chance to vent your anger, but now you're gonna have to do so as my EQUAL." I don't know if that's historically accurate (anyone???), but it taught me to be patient when my wife is angry at me, to give her permission to be mad and vent, so we can get past the emotion to the heart of the matter. In short, you fight fair with your spouse by being willing to give more grace than you demand in return. |
