1061 | Is prophecy dead? | Matt 11:13 | charis | 1757
Dear Matt, One layman to another. Thank you for your comments. They are good, and much calmer than some others I am getting :-) You are assuming a few things though, that I would like to address. 1) Prophets only predict the future. "But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation." 1 Corinthians 14:3 NASB. Your test would only work if predicting the future was the sole basis for 'prophet' status. 2) That all the 'wackos' out there are what I mean when I ask about present-day prophets. I have 'ear-witnessed' (sorry, I couldn't help it:-) responsible prophecy that fits the criteria set by the above scripture, and it is a boon to the church. Please look at my question-answer to RCSCROLL dated 03-24-01. Please let me know what you think. In Christ Jesus. |

1062 | Part 2 Apologetics? | Matt 11:13 | charis | 1756
Part 2 APOSTLE (Gk. (apostolos,) a "delegate"). One sent with a special message or commission. In this sense the word is used in the LXX (1KI 14:6; ISA 18:2), and in the NT: JOH 13:16, "Neither is one (who is sent) (apostle) greater than the one who sent him"; 2CO 8:23; PHI 2:25, where persons sent out by churches on special errands are called their (apostles,) or messengers. In HEB 3:1 Jesus is called "the (Apostle) and High Priest of our confession." (New Unger's Bible Dictionary) Apostle in the New Testament seems to be divided into 3 categories. 1) Jesus, 2) The Apostles to the Lamb, 12 in number, Matthias replaced Judas Iscariot. This is the only 'replacement' recorded in the Bible. 2) 'Post-Ascension apostles, messengers between the churches. Not 'Big-shots' from whom healing and miracles continuously 'radiated,' but servants. I believe this lasy category of apostle is still valid, but often abused. As to Judas, I meant Judas called Barsabbas, 'sent out' with Silas, Paul and Barnabas. (Acts 15:22) Regarding "Greet Andronicus and Junias, my kinsmen, and my fellow prisoners, who are outstanding among the apostles, who also were in Christ before me." Romans 16:7 NASB, you wrote, "As for Andronicus and Junis, they were not Apostles. You see I could be among the pesidents men however that dosent make me one of them." Please look at how the word 'among' is used in the Bible. It means 'with, together' and the usage implies clearly that the one party is included with the other party. What about: "But when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of it, they tore their robes and rushed out into the crowd, crying out..." Acts 14:14 NASB. And when Paul, number 14, is considered to be number 12, does he displace James or Matthias? Rev 21:14 While I am talking about 5-fold ministry, please read "And Judas and Silas, also being prophets themselves, encouraged and strengthened the brethren with a lengthy message." Acts 15:32 NASB. Friend, I also have personal experience with divine healing, my wife was healed from cancer of the womb, and I now have two teenage daughters. Actually, I do not like 'healing ministries,' and think that most are spiritually arrogant, some even charlatans. However, I cannot discount that many are healed by faith in God. I do, as a matter of fact, believe that one can be 'slain in the Spirit,' but think that the popular 'mass-slayings' are false, an abuse of showmanship and emotional manipulation. I am part of a healthy, well-balanced church. Many speak in tongues and (gasp!) prophesy. However, in our defense, I assure you that "...all things be done properly and in an orderly manner." 1 Corinthians 14:40 NASB. You may have never experienced this, but it IS possible. (Please note that stating that something cannot happen because you have not seen it is spiritual bigotry) My friend, you cannot make your assumptions based on the how many people abuse the gifts. After all, if every lemming jumped off the cliff, there would be no more lemmings. Obviously, some lemmings are not totally stupid :-) Finally, I am not 'buying into' anything. All that I speak of I have experienced. (Please watch your assumptions) If you have never been to a 'spirit-filled' church that was orderly, respectable, responsible and balanced, come to Yokohama some time. Yours in Christ Jesus. charis |

1063 | Part 1 Apologetics? | Matt 11:13 | charis | 1755
Part 1 Dear RCSCROLL, you seem intent on 'painting me with the same brush' as those who have hurt you in the past. (Important NOTE! I was re-reading my note, and saw my own PC-name, 'charis.' That's why, isn't it? You are equating this name with Charismatic. LOL! FYI, I use this name because it means 'grace,' NOT Charismatic.) Your bitterness toward anyone who believes in the present-day gifts and ministries of the Holy Spirit is apparent. Just because there are a lot of rotten 'ministries' out there, does not give you the righteousness to deny categorically all 'Spirit-filled' Christians, millions of whom serve the Lord with the same faith as was bestowed upon you by grace. Even if we are proven wrong when we meet the Lord, the judgment you proclaim is not in your hands, but God's. We desire earnestly to obey "God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."John 4:24 NASB. My use of the word 'restoration' is to that though many gifts were lost to the church through the ages, God desires to restore them. "And it will come about after this That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and daughters will prophesy, Your old men will dream dreams, Your young men will see visions." Joel 2:28 NASB. Joel chapter 2 is a hope of strength from the Lord to prepare us for the last days, to prepare for His glorious return. 100 years ago refers to the Welsh Revival, soon followed by the Pentecostal Movement in America. These preceded the 'Charismatics' by 60 years. BTW, I am not talking about a 'super-apostle or super-prophet.' Below is an edited version of what I wrote before: Apostles impossible? Thu 03/22/01, 5:53am. Perhaps you misplaced it. My dear friend in Christ, I read with great interest your reply. I must respectfully disagree with some of the premises of your opinions on this issue. It seems that you start with the idea that we do not have apostles today, then move on to prove it. Regarding Ephesians 2:20, I agree, these ministries are the foundation Christ laid. I do not propose to re-lay, but to continue on in this foundational gift. In regard to 1 Corinthians 13:8-12, you imply that the 'perfect' has come, thus doing away with the need for spiritual gifts. Jesus is the 'Perfect' spiritual gift, and He has not yet returned. I cannot believe that you say the divided church as we know it is not in need of as many gifts of the Spirit as are made available. We NEED them, now! Unfortunately, many 'ministries' have made a mockery of these gifts, with their misuse, abuse, and just plain false use of them. These miscreants are no excuse for you to deny the Spirit, just encouragement to find their proper use. Part 2 will explain some more. In Christ Jesus. |

1064 | 3 gifts, or less? | Eph 4:11 | charis | 1687
Dear RCSCROLL, I am afraid that I don't understand your point. I am not thinking of superceding the Apostles to the Lamb, but continuing their ministry. In any case you have not explained to me when these gifts were rescinded. I have used scripture to prove that there were more than 12 apostles, and that Paul clearly spoke of the gifts in the present-tense. Even the original 12 disciples did not heal 'all' on a 24-7 basis, only according to the faith of the recipient. Prophets proclaim the word of God, bu they are not soothsayers, per se. Sometimes the future is spoken, but not always. Jeremiah 23 speaks of false prophets. They have been around since way back, and will continue to be around until the return of the Lord Jesus. Since the above scripture describes 5 gifts, and you have tried to do away with 2 of them, are the others invalid, too? With respect in Christ Jesus. |

1065 | Is prophecy dead? Since when? | Matt 11:13 | charis | 1683
Dear Whyndell, (PROPHET.) "One who is divinely inspired to communicate God's will to His people and to disclose the future to them." (New Unger's Bible Dictionary) I am sorry, I did not make part of my question clear. The scripture from Matthew 11 is talking about John the Baptist. Some use this as a proof that prophets and prophecy were invalidated after John (the Baptist) died. My point was that AFTER John (the Baptist) died, Jesus continued to prophesy, John (the apostle) continued to prophecy, Paul spoke of prophecy in the present tense, and "Judas and Silas, also being prophets themselves, encouraged and strengthened the brethren with a lengthy message." Acts 15:32 NASB. If prophecy is dead, when did it die? It seems that you have a problem with those who believe in the present-day validity of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Or , more correctly, certain gifts. It also seems that your judgment is based on the abuse you have seen. This is flawed logic. "I have not met a balanced Charismatic, so there are no balanced Charismatics." By the way, I am not Charismatic. Period. I am not Pentecostal, either. Your 'facts' are bigotry. Also, the first widely documented restoration of the gifts of the Holy Spirit was in Wales over 100 years ago. Soon after, the Pentecostal movement started in the United States. Please answer the question using scripture, not sentiment. Blessings in Christ Jesus. |

1068 | How about common sense? | Bible general Archive 1 | charis | 1613
Dear bjanko, "You are a gentleman and a scholar." These are words my father praised me with when I 'done good.' I thank you for your patience with me. In all truth, my beliefs are very similar to yours. As one whose spiritual counsel is sometimes asked, I must approach, in grace, every individual as a 'special' case before God. But you are perfectly correct in "Let us be firm in our dicatation of ethics where the Bible is firm; and let us be moderate in our dictation of ethics where the Bible is silent or unclear." Well said! Is this yours, or should we give credit to another wise man? Either way, you said it, and I receive it. In Christ Jesus, and Amen! |

1069 | 'Separation' and 'Experience?' | Mark 15:34 | charis | 1609
Dear delores, Xapis, and Hawaii Ken Armstrong (and maybe some others) I have been studying this verse and the context for some time now, and still cannot find in the Bible the doctrine of Jesus' 'temporary' separation from the Trinity and 'experiencing' Hell. Maybe I am just obtuse, but I would like to hear scriptural evidence of these things. I am not an heretic, I completely believe that Jesus died for my (our) sins. I just can't find anywhere in the Bible where it says that Jesus was 'separated' from the Godhead, even for a moment. That Jesus was a man and the Son of God at the same time is a well-documented Biblical doctrine, often called a mystery, why modify it? (I am aware that it SOUNDS emotionally appealing to dwell on a 'separation,' and maybe even 'seems' to answer the mystery) As to 'experiencing' Hell, Jesus as God cannot 'experience' sin or spiritual damnation. He experienced HUMAN damnation, and bore OUR sins as a substitutionary sacrifice. He became 'sin' on our behalf, in order to abolish it. I can got to 'jail- ministry' and evangelize, and even get to know the inmate's plight, but you have to commit the crime and be incarcerated for it to truly 'experience' jail. You can go to India as a missionary, and even live there for years, but unless you are 'with the people' and living like they do, you can never 'know' their situation. Again, this concept appeals to the ear and to the soul, but is it from God's word? I ask humbly for an explanation, and ask pardon for a 'dumb' question. In Christ Jesus.
1070 | Covenant to Abraham revoked? | Gen 17:7 | charis | 1599
Dear colleagues, Is the above 'everlasting covenant' to Abraham and his descendents nullified by the New Covenant? Did God renege the Old Covenant and revoke from Israel salvation from Hell? If He did take away this 'privilege' of salvation by faith (Abraham's descendents), when was it taken away? Please give specific Bible direction.
1071 | How about common sense? | Bible general Archive 1 | charis | 1598
Dear bjanko, good answer, my friend. You are absolutely correct about people (even Christians!) thinking of their situation as an exception. That is precisely why I have been saying that they must be under the spiritual counsel of a shepherd AND the Holy Spirit. (It is amazing how many selfish things can be attributed to the Holy Spirit, isn't it?) You are also correct that poverty alone is a poor (no pun intended) excuse for not having children. If I were to try and typify some possible factors for considering non-abortive contraception, it would be 1) Poverty and Government oppression (like China) The PROC expressly forbids more than one child, the punishment can be extreme! 2) Poverty and poor health care (like India) Having many children is certain doom for those truly finite resources and almost no medicine or hospital facilities. 3) Poverty and disease (like many parts of Africa) AIDS is a REAL epidemic. Bearing children without care is murder. 4) Poverty and political turmoil (like much of Africa and Asia) I am not real sure about this one, but moderation COULD be in order where terrorism and religious persecution are daily realities. 5) Poverty and overpopulation (many metropolitan cities) I am not a 'save the world from overpopulation' nut, but I have been to many places where there is no physical ability to keep more children. I am aware that you could hang them from the ceiling in hammocks, but prudence CAN be a factor. My friend, I am very much aware that now that I have gone 'out on a limb' to list possible factors. Now you are at liberty to just say, "1-5, No excuse! Christians have lived through that before." But these factors, sometimes more than one, affect millions of believers in a real way that we Americans cannot fathom. 'Armchair Quarterbacks' don't win football games. I am simply making a case for us to be moderate in our dictation of ethics, especially where the Bible is silent or unclear. Blessings to you in Christ Jesus.
1072 | Where did Easter get its name? | NT general Archive 1 | charis | 1595
Yes, my friend, the origin is pagan. "The word (Easter) is of Saxon origin, Eastra, the goddess of spring, in whose honor sacrifices were offered about Passover time each year. By the eighth century Anglo-Saxons had adopted the name to designate the celebration of Christ's resurrection." (New Unger's Bible Dictionary) It is mentioned once in the Bibles I checked: "And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people." Acts 12:4 KJV. I posted this last night (Japan time) but it got lost. (Must be 'Mir' related :-) In Christ Jesus. |

1074 | Please explain this verse? | Mark 15:34 | charis | 1561
Dear friend, you are right! It is a shame when our zeal to inform others of our thoughts turns us from the 'job at hand.' I will attempt to stay on track, and thank you for reminding me of focus and dignity. The words Jesus spoke are a quote from Psalm 22:1. Some say that He probably prayed the entire psalm, as a testimony that He Himself answered the prophecy of this psalm. (The Pulpit Commentary) "Posterity will serve Him; It will be told of the Lord to the coming generation. They will come and will declare His righteousness To a people who will be born, that He has performed it." Psalm 22:30,31 NASB I am of this camp, I find it unthinkable that the Lord was 'temporarily seperated' from the Trinity, or that He 'experienced' hell. I do believe that he experienced death and derision that the prophecies would be fulfilled, and that He would indeed be proven victorious over Satan. Only God's Anointed could do so. Though He was 'as a lamb led to slaughter,' from the moment after "It is finished," He was crowned in glory and resurrection power. For us, Amen! In Christ Jesus. |

1075 | Is prophecy dead? | Matt 11:13 | charis | 1560
It has been put to me that this scripture says that there is no longer prophecy in the church today. However, Jesus prophesied after John, and Paul speaks of prophets in the present-tense from a prison in Rome in AD 62 or 63. John gave us the book of Revelation. If prophecy is dead, when did it die? 1076 | Invalid 'gifts?' | Eph 4:11 | charis | 1559
Point well made. I believe that the ministerial gifts spoken of in Ephesians 4 are valid today, though often misunderstood, misused or abused. 1080 | How about common sense? | Bible general Archive 1 | charis | 1525
Dear bjanko, Thank you for your prayers for my wife. I understand this to be a personal 'specific' situation. I am under pastoral counsel in this matter. Still, I must think that the several million believer's circumstances that I outlined could hardly be called hypothetical or specific (except to the individual). It would seem that considering their plight would come under the topic of 'data for discussion of contraceptive use among Christians,' as the Bible is not clearly for or against contraceptives. As I said, I am not an advocate of misuse or abuse, I am only making the point that saying, "Under no circumstance is it allowable!" is unwise and rigid, leaving less room for the Holy Spirit to work in a personal manner with the individual believer. Nonetheless, I respect your opinion and your faith. In Christ Jesus. charis |
