641 | Tithing before Mosaic Law | Gen 14:20 | azurelaw | 217726
Oops, sorry that I click on the "note" by mistake where as I was intending to post a question :-( ******* I believe this should be the first account in the Bible recording the 10 percent tithing. The second one is recorded in Gen 28:22. Both were not yet set in the Mosaic Law. Question: 1/ Was giving 10 percent a common practice in the ancient time? 2/ Under what condition was it exercised before the Mosaic Law? Thanks and Shalom Azure |

642 | Tithing before Mosaic Law | Gen 14:20 | azurelaw | 217748
Dear Brother Makarios, Thank you very much for your answer. They are indeed helpful. Now, one more question on tithing before the Mosaic Law. What I have interpreted from the 2 accounts (Abraham and Jacob), it is obvious that Abraham's tithe was to show his gratitude as you have pointed out, however, for Jacob's, it gives me the sense of obtaining wealth first and tithe later if that comes true (a more of selfish and prosperity concern than purely showing gratitude and thanks as what Abraham did). It could be Jacob's personality for taking advantage of others or bargaining, but was the idea of bargaining/desiring more or better prospertiy the main motive or inducement for tithing by then? Pagan Chinese make sacrifice or tithe usually have the mind of bribing the gods. Shalom Azure |

645 | Tithing before Mosaic Law | Gen 14:20 | azurelaw | 217776
Dear Brother John, We usually know not what we need, but desire what we want. How great and loving is our merciful Lord! Mat 6:8 ...for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. Mat 7:11 "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him! :-) Shalom Azure |

648 | What does "blameless" refer to | Gen 17:1 | azurelaw | 223468
How would Abraham understand "Walk before Me, and be blameless" in the context of Chapter 17? There is no record showing God gave any law or commands to Abraham in the past. Am I correct to associate it with the circumcision required of Abraham and his descendants (V10) by God in keeping His covenant that they may be blameless? Thank you. Azure |

Dear Missouri, I am afraid you have your own agenda weighing too much in your mind that you misread my question. I am not talking about marriage. Please re-read my question. If you don't understand what I am asking, I would appreciate it that you leave it to others to help me. Thank you. Shalom Azure |

Dear Brother Doc, Thank you for the succinct answer. Yes, we are so much blessed. God did not treat us according to our deeds but always shows His love and grace first. His grace and loving kindness is beyond our comprehensibility. Shalom Azure |

651 | Did God return? | Gen 18:10 | azurelaw | 233142
In chapter 21, the narrative of the birth of Isaac has not mentioned the return of God. So should we understand the word "return" here for it also bears quite a number of meaning in its Hebrew root? Thank you for your help. Shalom Azure |

655 | Is it a sin to like people unwillingly? | Gen 19:1 | azurelaw | 189793
Dear AbuYohan, Welcome to the forum. You mentioned that : ...get some one 2 annoint and pray for u. The anointing breaks every yoke that comes against the written word of God. Per my understanding, the purpose and function of anointing render the idea of sanctification or sacred separation for God, and it usually comes along with ordination, sacrifice and offerings as we see in the OT. The anointing task was also not performed too casually. Could you please explain further on your above idea that : 1/ who do you mean by someone 2/ "anointing breaks every yoke that comes against the written word of God" with scriptural support in order that I can learn more. Thank you and Shalom Azure |

656 | What does the Bible say about anal sex? | Gen 19:1 | azurelaw | 214764
Dear humility, I have to agree with Justme that the question is inappropriate for the forum not only because of the reason that he gave, but also that as Christian, it is not difficult to know the answer or to discern the problem. 1 Pet 1:15 but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; 1 Pet 1:16 because it is written, "YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY." As I read your profile and some of your posts, I believe you are able to answer it yourself biblically. Though the Bible does not contain the phrase "anal sex" or "oral sex"....(these are modern inventions of the fallen human heart to satisfy their lust), the spirit of demanding us to abstain from the sin is clear. Study and meditate on the 2 greatest commandments Jesus gave in Matthew: Matt 22:37 And He said to him, "'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.' Matt 22:38 "This is the great and foremost commandment. Matt 22:39 "The second is like it, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' Shalom Azure |

657 | Why did God tell Abraham to kill his son | Gen 22:2 | azurelaw | 214876
Dear Bibleman, Let me try to see if I may be of help. Since you quote James Chapter 1, you might also find the answer there. It is clearly stated in James 1:14 "But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust." So, we see that a person is tempted by his/her own LUST. I don't see it bears a lustful desire in the case of Abraham. Rather, I view it a test as stated in James 1:2-4 and Abraham has demonstrated his faith in God as required in v6-7. Just my 2 cents. Shalom Azure |

658 | Why did God tell Abraham to kill his son | Gen 22:2 | azurelaw | 214948
Dear Bibleman, The scripture said it is a test, then it is a test, period. Meanwhile, you should not just focus on the single incidence of what Abraham had experienced. You have to view his life as a whole to understand how he demonstrated his obedience and how did God interact with him with His promise. God did not just get to Abraham to give him such a severe test all a sudden in the beginning. From the scripture, we see that God chose Abraham to develop a close relationship with Him. He was guiding Abraham to walk His way. In the case of your friend, even the issue is not about "killing" but doing some other things, if he/she has never known God, never developed a right and close relationship with God (i.e. studying the bible properly, healthy praying life and a healthy church life, etc.), it is very reasonable to doubt about his/her claiming of hearing any directives from God. Ps 25:8 Good and upright is the LORD; Therefore He instructs sinners in the way. Ps 25:10 All the paths of the LORD are lovingkindness and truth to those who keep His covenant and His testimonies. Ps 25:12 Who is the man who fears the LORD? He will instruct him in the way he should choose. Ps 25:13 His soul will abide in prosperity, And his descendants will inherit the land. Ps 25:14 The secret of the LORD is for those who fear Him, And He will make them know His covenant. I like what our brother Doc has shared some time ago : "We do not judge the character of God by His actions. We judge His actions by His character." Shalom Azure |

659 | Why did God tell Abraham to kill his son | Gen 22:2 | azurelaw | 214976
Dear Bibleman, I see that you are not satisfied with all the answers given to you and perhaps it will not have a satisfactorily solution for you...and it is true that we might not get all the answers we want or the answer provided is beyond our understanding or reasoning. Just like Abraham, he might not understand why God asked him to sacrifice his beloved son, yet, he (Abraham) obey and put his trust in God for he knew God is loving and faithful. Now, do you see the point? If you believe God and His Holy Word, we should know about His attributes. Meanwhile, the way of revelation in Abraham's day is very much different from now - we have the Bible. We always have the Bible to teach and verify people's claiming their receiving special revelation or hearing from God. The proper way to understand the Bible is to build up the doctrine base on the didactic passage not the narrative ones. The historical narrative passages recorded how God has been interacting with people in different ways and most of them served with a unique function or plan of God. Furthermore, your friend is not Abraham after all. Shalom Azure |
