2041 | Okay to question faith and the Bible? | 2 Tim 3:16 | azurelaw | 200133
Dear parpar, Thanks for the quote. In return, may I echo with my favourite author C.S. Lewis' "The Screwtape Letters" "My dear Wormwood,...Your man has been accustomed, ever since he was a boy, to have a dozen imcompatible philosophies dancing about together inside his head. He doesn't think of doctrines as primarily 'true' or 'false', but as 'academic' or 'pratical', 'outworn' or 'contemporary', 'conventional' or 'ruthless'. Jargon, not argument, is your best ally in keeping him from the Church... The trouble about arguments is that it moves the whole struggle on the Enemy's own ground. He can argue too; whereas in really practical propaganda of the kind I am suggesting He has been shown for centuries to be greatly the inferior of Our Father Below. By the very act of arguing, you awake the patient's reason; and once it is awake, who can foresee the result? Even if a particular train of thought can be twisted so as to end in our favour, you will find that you have been strenghtening in your patient the fatal habit of attending to universal issues and withdrawing his attention from the stream of immediate sense expreiences. Your business is to fix his attention on the stream. Teach him to call it 'real life' and don't let him ask what he means by 'real'." - C.S. Lewis If it is His will, even the most rebellious man or the wisest skeptic on earth will finally kneel before His Throne for conversion and submission. Rom 9:11-18 Rom 11:33-35 Shalom Azure |

2042 | Okay to question faith and the Bible? | 2 Tim 3:16 | azurelaw | 200294
Dear parpar, Thank you for your response and providing scriptures in balancing the discussion. In regards with "free will", how would you consider or understand "slave" as described in Rom 6:16-18? You don't have to answer me. By the way, pardon me that I prefer to shy away from the discussion which has been proven to be highly controversial among those forefathers and yet unsolved; and has also been discussed a lot in the past long before I join the forum. My further input is just redundancy (Prov 17:28). I believe you should know where I stand from my posts. There are a number of good (even hot perhaps) posts in past discussion on the forum. Just do a word search with : free will, predestination, Calvinism, Arminianism, etc. for your own further reading. Shalom Azure |

2046 | Most important doctrines? | 2 Tim 3:16 | azurelaw | 215557
Dear Brother Chuck, That's a good question. I believe the kind of heresies in past and present may give us some clues as to the most important doctrines that believers should hold onto and stand firm. Satan hates the Word, Christ and His salvation work so much that he would make all his effort to attack these areas. He has done so in the beginning - attacking God's Word (Gen 3:1-5), and will certainly do so as we have seen many so-call christian scholars or liberal christians challenges the inerrancy and authority of the Bible. The other is the attack on the Deity of Christ (Mat 24:5, 1 John 4:1-3) where we can see heresies of old and new denying Him and the resurrection of Jesus. (1 Cor 15:12-14) So, the above two are what I considered the most important doctrines. Just my 2 cents :-) Shalom Azure |

2048 | What do we have for fighting? | 2 Tim 4:7 | azurelaw | 188120
A short story to share written by an amateur writer, Mr. M.L. Au (a catholic), in a local newspaper. Here is my translation: ---- A conversation between a lioness and her cub ---- Little cub: Mom, why do we have such big feet? Lioness: They grow big and strong to help us run fast. Little cub: Why do we have those sharp claws? Lioness: They can help us to hunt much easier. Little cub: Why is our skin so thick? Lioness: It helps to protect us from severe injury while fighting, my dear. Little cub: Wow, how cool that God equipped us with those gifts! The lioness nodded. The little cub thought for a moment and asked again: "Mom, I don't understand. Since we have these remarkable gifts, what are we doing here in this zoo?" Lioness: "....." (silent) --------------------------------- Though the message has nothing with religious concern, still it triggers my thought that we, christians, might sometimes choose to reside comfortably in our own zoo. Matt 10:16 Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves. Eph 6:13-17 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand firm therefore, HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH, and HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, and having shod YOUR FEET WITH THE PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE; in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take THE HELMET OF SALVATION, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Acts 1:8 ....but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth." 2050 | Acts Ch 15, verse 36 to 41 | 2 Tim 4:11 | azurelaw | 174446
There appeared a disageement between Paul and Barnabas concerning bringing Mark (or John) with them. It seems to me that Paul is a very tough person whereas Barnabas could be more gentle and would like to give chance to Mark (who might not be strong enough spiritually or physically?) in hoping that he could be part of their work and grow stronger. However, the result is a disagreement between the two. So when apply to today's church, what should we do as leaders in church? Shall we act like Paul to be tough and firm in the work of God or shall we be more understanding and caring to help the growth of who are weak? Did the bible mention somewhere that John (Mark) has improved and gained back Paul's trust? |

2055 | Did I commit adultery? | Titus | azurelaw | 203076
Dear smallflower, I agree with Brother Doc. We have to be very careful on not letting Satan has his chance to tempt us. Based on what you have said, I would not consider that you had entered into an adulterous relationship (however only God knows your heart, you have to pray for enlightenment. "Heb 4:12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart." - Hebrew 4:12) but you might be risking yourself with the possibility of temptation. I remember few years ago, in a sermon, the pastor reminded us never to do any counselling or mentoring alone with cross gender. Gal 6:1 Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted. Since you are asking this question, it is apparently an alarm from the Holy Spirit. Submit yourself to the Holy Spirit. It is always advisable to acquaint with the same gender in your spiritual walk. Find yourself a mature sister in Christ, if not, at least a cell group to engage in. Remember the Lord's prayer? "...lead us not into temptation, deliver us from evil..." Shalom Azure |

2056 | Did I commit adultery? | Titus | azurelaw | 203077
Hi again smallflower, One short note. In my previous post, I am not saying that too casually. I have an unbelieving husband (I am praying not only for his salvation, but also he will one day serve our Lord with me together). So you can imagine how I might have felt lonely in my spiritual walk. However, God blesses me with some very dear sisters in Christ, a tightly love-bonded cell group, and also some very dear brothers (both at church and on the internet) in Christ. May God bless you and the Holy Spirit guide you. Shalom Azure |

2059 | Is God an advocate of slavery? | Titus 2:9 | azurelaw | 232559
Dear Jenny, You may check the below link in answering to your question. I think the article is helpful for your better understanding. http://www.gotquestions.org/Bible-slavery.html By the way, I would like to remind you that context is extremely important in Bible study as I see many of your questions are taken the verse out of its context. It would be dangerous and easily gets to a wrong conclusion without understanding the background of the book. I would recommend you get yourself a copy of "How to read the Bible for all its worth" (by Fee and Stuart) for a proper Bible study. Shalom Azure |

2060 | Chinese - descendants of Shem | Titus 3:9 | azurelaw | 193277
Dear Nolan (Makarios), A warm welcome back. I have asked a question concerning Chinese line of heritage from Noah (post 188141) during your absence from the forum. Doc has responded to me that Chinese are descendants of Shem and he suggested that you would have some specific information on the issue. I am so glad to see you on the forum again and may I ask if you can help? Shalom Azure |
