1921 | What about the violence in the home? | Phil 3:21 | azurelaw | 213070
Dear humility, I pray that what you have described is not your own situation and the question is only a bible study one. Nevertheless, I hope the below scriptures are helpful:- Mal 2:16 "For I hate divorce," says the LORD, the God of Israel, "and him who covers his garment with wrong," says the LORD of hosts. "So take heed to your spirit, that you do not deal treacherously." Matt 18:15 "If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother. Matt 18:16 "But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that BY THE MOUTH OF TWO OR THREE WITNESSES EVERY FACT MAY BE CONFIRMED. Matt 18:17 "If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. 1 Cor 7:4 The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does; and likewise also the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. 1 Cor 7:5 Stop depriving one another, except by agreement for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer, and come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. God surely hates violence against a spouse and divoce. If the spouse is a believer, appeal it to your pastor as per teaching in Mat 18:15-17. If it still cannot be settled, as Keliy suggested, a temporary separation for protecting oneself from being brutally hurt is reasonable. Don't forget to pray for everybody involved unceasingly. 1922 | I would like to know why euodia and synt | Phil 4:2 | azurelaw | 198102
Dear Lady, Welcome to the forum. There is no mention about the cause or reason of their disagreement. However, one thing is certain that they both helped Paul in his ministry (see Ch 4 v3). Paul did not rebuke their discord, but drew the attention of other church members to help them reconcile. In reality, even brothers and sisters are serving together in ministry earnestly, there always have disagreements. No matter what the causes are (be they of personality, way of treating things, etc.), I think Paul's focus and concern is to keep the unity of Christ's body and also build up the individuals from their weaknesses. See how Paul taught them in Ch 2 verse 1-5. Just my 2 cents. Shalom Azure |

1923 | Rejoicing in The Lord | Phil 4:4 | azurelaw | 200144
Dear NightJay, Scriptures: Eccl 3:4, 10-11 Rom 12:15 2 Cor 6:10, 7:10 It does not literally mean to rejoice in every single second continuously 24 hours a day. I hope the below commentaries are helpful for your understanding of the scripture. ----- John Gill Phil 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always,.... This is a repetition of the exhortation in the preceding chapter; See Gill on "Php 3:1"; with this addition "alway"; for there is always cause and matter for rejoicing in Christ, even in times of affliction, distress, and persecution; since he is always the same; his grace is always sufficient; his blood has a continual virtue in it, and always speaks for peace and pardon; his righteousness is an everlasting one, and so is his salvation, and such is his love; though some join this word with what follows, [and] again, I say, rejoice; this is what was continually inculcated by him, as being of great importance and use for the comfort of believers, and the honour of Christ. Phil 3:1 Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord,.... The Syriac version reads, "in our Lord," i.e. Christ. …, he exhorts them in a most affectionate manner, as his dear brethren in a spiritual relation, that they would make Christ their chief joy; that whatever sorrow they might have on account of his bonds, … he observes they had reason to rejoice in their Lord and Saviour; …, yet Christ should be the principal object of their joy. A believer has always reason to rejoice in Christ; in the greatness of his person, he being in the form of God, and equal to him, and therefore able to save his to the uttermost by his obedience and death, and has interest enough in heaven to make his intercession prevalent and successful and power to keep safe all that are committed to him; and in the fitness of his person to be a Mediator, and daysman, to take care of things pertaining to the glory of God, and to make reconciliation for sin; and in the fullness of his person, he having all grace in him for his people, which is all theirs, and with joy may they draw water out of the full wells of salvation in him; and in the beauty of his person which surpasses all others, a sight of which fills with joy unspeakable, and full of glory. They may, and should rejoice, as they sometimes do, in his salvation; in the contrivance of it by infinite wisdom; in the impetration of it by himself; and in the application of it by his spirit; and that because hereby justice is satisfied, the law is magnified and made honourable, sin is finished, and an everlasting righteousness brought in. Also they are called upon to rejoice in his resurrection, which is for their justification; in his ascension, seeing he then received gifts for men; and in his session at the right hand of God, which is in their nature; and in his intercession which is to their advantage; and in all the relations he stands in to them, as head, husband, father, brother, friend; and in everything that is his, and that belongs unto him, as his Gospel, ordinances, ways, and worship... --------- Darby Phil 4:4 … "Rejoice in the Lord." If he even weeps over many who call themselves Christians, he rejoices always in the Lord; in Him is that which nothing can alter. This is not an indifference to sorrow which hinders weeping, but it is a spring of joy which enlarges when there is distress, because of its immutability, and which becomes even more pure in the heart the more it becomes the only one; and it is in itself the only spring that is infinitely pure. When it is our only spring, we thereby love others. If we love them besides Him, we lose something of Him. When through exercise of heart we are weaned from all other springs, His joy remains in all its purity, and our concern for others partakes of this same purity. Nothing moreover troubles this joy, because Christ never changes. The better we know Him, the better are we able to enjoy that which is ever enlarging through knowing Him. But he exhorts Christians to rejoice: it is a testimony to the worth of Christ, it is their true portion. Four years in prison chained to a soldier had not hindered his doing it, nor being able to exhort others more at ease than he. Shalom Azure |

1924 | HOW CAN GOD HELP ME WITH THIS COURT CASE | Phil 4:6 | azurelaw | 202826
Dear regina--, I feel terribly sorry to have learnt of your aweful situation. As brother Brad has mentioned, the forum does not suit to deal with this kind of issues and his advice is pertinently stated. However, please do not be disappointed. It is good that you bring this to the forum so that other brothers and sister who are reading your post will pray for you. Rom 8:28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. I will be praying for you and your kids. 1927 | How Big is God? | Phil 4:19 | azurelaw | 207998
Dear Brother Tim, Let me echo with you two testimonies (just a few of the many) recorded in the book "Queen of the Dark Chamber":- It was the 2nd Word War when the Japanese army took over Nanjing. The soldier spared no young women for their lustful desire whomever they found. In a village, old Mrs. Wong and her family were living in the 2nd house in a row of 3. One day, a Japanese soldier got to the village in search of his target. Those young women were hiding and leaving those senior praying outside. The Japanese soldier finished his search in the 1st house and was on his way approaching the 2nd one where the women were, there, jumped out a barking dog against him; thus distracted his search and he went straight to the 3rd house. Another old woman, Mrs. Chan, did not have money for her family to escape from Nanjing; thus were forced to stay where they were. Sadly that several Japanese got to their house and killed all the men leaving the old women. The women were too frightened that they jumped into a well for ending their lives. While they were struggling under the well, someone approached the opening and lowered down a rope to safe them. The one who saved them was a Japanese soldier - a christian. **** God is at all sovereign. My heart sank when I saw walkforchrist's note that if his lying could save thousand, he would lie despite it is sin. Oh my! Our effort is nothing if it is not God at work. Shalom Azure |

Dear Jalek, Thank you for sharing. Your testimony is a blessing to many readers of the forum, I believe. I also appreciate very much that while being enlightened and touched by a verse, you also do not neglect the context, theology of the passage as well. May the Lord keep you and bless you that your faith grows in His hand. Shalom Azure |

1929 | how do i get control of my will? | Colossians | azurelaw | 207704
Dear walkforchrist, I sure empathize your situation and pray that you gain strength from our gracious Lord day by day when you put your focus on Him and His Word. Your question reminds me of a citation from our Brother Doc in post 203695 which reads below: "I do not know of a single scripture -- and I speak advisedly -- which tells me to take my sin, the particular thing that gets me down, to God in prayer and ask Him to deliver me from it and then trust in faith that He will. Now that teaching is also often put like this: you must say to a man who is constantly defeated by a particular sin, 'I think your only hope is to take it to Christ and Christ will take it from you.' But what does Scripture say in Ephesians 4:28 to the man who finds himself constantly guilty of stealing, to a man who sees something he likes and takes it? What am I to tel such a man? Am I to say, 'Take that sin to Christ and ask Him to deliver you?' No, what the apostle Paul tells him is this: 'Let him that stole, steal no more.' Just that. Stop doing it. And if it is fornication or adultery or lustful thoughts, again: Stop doing it, says Paul. He does not say, 'Go and pray to Christ to deliver you.' No. You stop doing that, he says, as becomes children of God." --Martyn Lloyd-Jones Please read Roman chapter 5 and 6. Shalom Azure |

Dear Don, I think your response to Walkforchrist has been wrongly directed to me. In order to secure your intended reader's (i.e. walkforchrist) getting your post, perhaps you may repost your reply to him/her again since the user is a new registrant to SBF and I am not sure he/she will read your reply displayed on the main page. 1932 | what do you have on psalm 139:15 | Col 1:16 | azurelaw | 218991
Dear Jeann, Here's a commentary on Psalm 139:15 by Charles Spurgeon: "My substance was not hid from thee. The substantial part of my being was before thine all seeing eye; the bones which make my frame were put together by thine hand. The essential materials of my being before they were arranged were all within the range of thine eye. I was hidden from all human knowledge, but not from thee: thou hast ever been intimately acquainted with me. When I was made in secret. Most chastely and beautifully is here described the formation of our being before the time of our birth. A great artist will often labour alone in his studio, and not suffer his work to be seen until it is finished; even so did the Lord fashion us where no eye beheld as, and the veil was not lifted till every member was complete. Much of the formation of our inner man still proceeds in secret: hence the more of solitude the better for us. The true church also is being fashioned in secret, so that none may cry, "Lo, here!" or "Lo, there!" as if that which is visible could ever be identical with the invisibly growing body of Christ. And curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. "Embroidered with great skill", is an accurate poetical description of the creation of veins, sinews, muscles, nerves, etc. What tapestry can equal the human fabric? This work is wrought as much in private as if it had been accomplished in the grave, or in the darkness of the abyss. The expressions are poetical, beautifully veiling, though not absolutely concealing, the real meaning. God's intimate knowledge of us from our beginning, and even before it, is here most charmingly set forth. Cannot he who made us thus wondrously when we were not, still carry on his work of power till he has perfected us, though we feel unable to aid in the process, and are lying in great sorrow and self loathing, as though cast into the lowest parts of the earth?" 1936 | when man fail to be committed to God | Col 3:5 | azurelaw | 194838
Dear Endie, If one does not commit to God, what does he/she commit to? Please understand that the meaning of idols do not limit to those of the men made images or statues. One who loves anything more than God, he/she commits idolatry. Col 3:5 Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. Go onto v 6, it talks about the consequence (This should also answer your another question). Here are some more scriptures for you to ponder: John 15:1-8 Luke 8:4-15 2 Cor 6:14-18 Rom 8:5-9 Hope this is helpful. Shalom Azure |

1938 | is it ok to lie in certain cases | Col 3:9 | azurelaw | 207914
Dear bowler, gotquestions.org provides the below article: Question: "Is it ever right to lie?" Answer: It is never right to lie. The ninth commandment prohibits bearing false witness (Exodus 20:16). Proverbs 6:16-19 lists “a lying tongue” and “a false witness who pours out lies” as two of the seven abominations to the Lord. Love “rejoices with the truth” (1 Corinthians 13:6). See also (Psalm 119:29, 163; 120:2; Proverbs 12:22; 13:5; Ephesians 4:25; and Colossians 3:9.) There are many examples of liars in Scripture, from Jacob’s deceit in Genesis 27 to the pretense of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5. Time after time, we see that falsehood leads to misery, loss, and judgment. Sometimes a question arises concerning lies that seem to have positive results. For example, the lie the Hebrew midwives tell Pharaoh seems to result in the Lord’s blessing (Exodus 1:15-21). However, it should be obvious that the Lord is blessing the midwives’ rescue of the children, rather than any falsehood they told. God in His mercy blessed them in spite of the lie, notbecause of it. Another example is Rahab’s lie in Joshua 2:5. God never condones her lie, but He does forgive it. Rahab’s life is spared in response to her faith, which she expresses in verses 9-11. God not only forgives Rahab’s lying, but also her idolatry and harlotry—another example of God’s mercy in action. Recommended Resource: Overcoming Sin and Temptation by John Owen. **** Shalom Azure |

1939 | is it ok to lie in certain cases | Col 3:9 | azurelaw | 207949
Dear Looking, You say: Jesus did break ... the law by eating food that was for only the priests. No, Jesus did not break the law (Mat 12:5). Yes, the consecrated bread was for the priest alone but Jesus is the High Priest (see Hebrew ch 3-5), He is the Lord of Sabbath (Mat 12:8). Shalom Azure |

"Are you going to ignore what Jesus told the Pharisees? That they would of course break the law to save a life and that according to Jesus that was the right thing to do?" Oh, dear bowler, whether I agree to the above or not, it is not a graceful thing to put words into my mouth! Shalom Azure |
