Dear lidiagg, Our Lord sent the Holy Ghost - the comforter, to help, strengthen His Own. Most important of all, Christ always reigns and He will not leave His Own without equiping us with all the necessary gifts and power and strength to fight the good fight for Him. Read John 16 and set your hope and mind on our Lord and Saviour. Shalom Azure |

1543 | Iam having some questions | John 17:1 | azurelaw | 212258
Dear Kcabm, Your question: He then is sanctifying Himself so we will be also sanctified through the truth. Brother John has given you a fine answer. I would like to just add my 2 cents to the captioned question as I think the below verse are also helpful for you. Heb 2:16 For assuredly He does not give help to angels, but He gives help to the descendant of Abraham. Heb 2:17 Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. Heb 2:18 For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted. Jesus did not only die for believers but He also lived for believers a perfect Holy life in order that we may be perfected in Him. Therefore, we must be abide in Him for apart from Him we can do nothing (John 15:5). Shalom Azure |

1544 | Iam having some questions | John 17:1 | azurelaw | 212490
Dear Kcabm, I might have missed something since I do not have the time to go through all the posts on this thread. However, what I have read from your post (212434), are you saying that people in the OT is no way to be saved by grace through faith alone? If so, I see that you are quoting verses from the Book of Hebrews. I don't understand why you have the above notion if you have studied Hebrews. Shalom Azure |

1545 | Iam having some questions | John 17:1 | azurelaw | 212536
Wew, more than a thousand pages on just the dietary laws!!!! What a burden for the Jews! Really too much...too much for me, as well! Only the Bible could spend my entire life to study it and I am still not sure if I could accomplish it - my top priority of study :-) How wonderfully blessed that we are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. Happy New Year to you. Shalom Azure |

1546 | The Lord's prayer shows immaturity? | John 17:1 | azurelaw | 215952
Dear Humility, I also love to pray the Lord's prayer especially during my devotional time. We also recite it at every Sunday service. I don't think they should condemn you, however, you may need to explain to them why you treasure the Lord's prayer so much and tell them the richness, depth and precious meaning of it. Meanwhile, I also think that we should not limit our prayer to the Lord's prayer as you can see how Jesus prayed in Gethsemane (Mat 26) and John 17 that those were very specific, yet, they were in the essence of the Lord's prayer. 1547 | John 17:2 Use of third person? | John 17:2 | azurelaw | 216110
Dear pkbldr, Welcome to the forum. This is a good question. I cannot say I can provide you a solid answer; however, interesting that last week I was preparing a bible study for my youth group on John 3:14-21. During my research, some studies show that v16-21 could not have been spoken by Jesus but a further elaboration by John. The conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus seemingly ended in v15 as we can see from the syntax and the context of the preceding chapters. Therefore, this could be John's writing style to "insert" some of his Holy Spirit inspired elaboration in between and chapter 17:2-3 could be the same case as in chapter 3:16-21. Which means that Jesus prayer is from Chapter 17:1, 17:3- onward. Again, I cannot be dogmatic on this but just my 2 cents. There maybe others who are more well-versed and knowledged to give you a better and satisfactory answer :-) Shalom Azure |

1549 | What do we need to know about God | John 17:3 | azurelaw | 208486
Dear Jamison, Please note the scriptures you cited DO NOT say you will inherit ETERNAL LIFE by doing such and such. They say: "...you shall have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me." (Luke 18:22) "...and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me." (Mark 20:21) "...and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me." (Mat 19:21) The context of the scripture is that Jesus was refuting the mindset of the young man who asked "...what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?". He hoped to obtain eternal life or salvation through good work, which in contrast to the doctrines of Grace and salvation through faith alone. Observe that Jesus told him to "follow me". Did the 12 apostles sell what they have before they follow Christ? No. They just follow Him determinedly. Read Roman 10:9-10. Shalom Azure |

1550 | What do we need to know about God | John 17:3 | azurelaw | 208490
Dear Jeff, "Christ was not telling the man how to get to Heaven. He was clearly showing the man the condition of his own heart. He was self-righteous and not willing to part from his earthly riches. Even if Heaven were available to him for a price (which it was and is not), the man was not willing to pay it." Excellent point. Thank you. You have explained much much better than I did. Shalom Azure |

1555 | Retain or forgive sins? | John 20:22 | azurelaw | 204694
Dear John, May I echo with you with: Psalm 131:1-2 O LORD, my heart is not proud, nor my eyes haughty; Nor do I involve myself in great matters, Or in things too difficult for me. Surely I have composed and quieted my soul; Like a weaned child rests against his mother, My soul is like a weaned child within me. Deuteronomy 29:29 (ESV) The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law. 1556 | John 20:23 | John 20:23 | azurelaw | 176983
Can anyone explain this verse? How should we interpret it together with Matthew 18:18 and 22? The teacher in our Church explained the second part (if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained) that if we do not forgive the sins of others, their sins retained in your heart. That is you are always in a situation that you memorize their sins. In doing so, you are infact bothered by their sins. That is why we should forgive. Thanks for any help. Azure |

1558 | pastor / shepherd? | John 21:17 | azurelaw | 211251
John 21:15-17 Nowadays, there are pastors ONLY engage in teaching in seminaries and giving sermons on the pulpits. Is "pastor" equivalent to "shepherd"? If so, it seems to me that much of the responsibility that required of a pastor has been ignored or tend to be specialized (division of labour). What are the criteria for pastoral ordination? Thanks for your input and insight. Shalom Azure |

1559 | pastor / shepherd? | John 21:17 | azurelaw | 211287
Thank you, justme, for your feedback. I have no idea why you say that I judge harshly, but when I re-read my question, I understand why you have such a feeling. I am terribly sorry that I did not state it clearly. My beginning sentence should read like this instead: "Nowadays, there are SOME pastors ONLY engage in teaching in seminaries and giving sermons on the pulpits." I forgot to use the word "some" to state clearly the specific group of ministers. Therefore, my focus of concern is what constitute to the term "pastor" if no caring and shepherding function is exercised? I hope it clarifies the misunderstanding :-) Shalom Azure |
