1461 | searching for a specific verse | Bible general Archive 4 | azurelaw | 200280
Dear Cheri, Do you know that this verse has been composed with a beautiful melody for a choir chorus? I love it so much...just right now my memory does not serve me good enough to remember who the composer is. I need to check the score for the name later when I get to church. I wonder under the wave of those contemporary pop style worship music serving the pulpits today, how many young christians are aware of those beautiful classical mixed voice chorus lingering in the hall of the chapel that brings your soul so admirably and hautily to focus on our Almighty God. Dear Brother Doc, Traducianism held by Martin Luther... Is it possible for you provide the source where I can retrieve Luther's article on this subject? Though my church is Lutheran based, as far as my memory serves me, I cannot recall the idea of soul inherited from parents in my mind. What I have had in mind is pretty much similar to what you have said about the creationism view. It would be good to know more about Lurther's thought on the subject. Thanks and Shalom Azure |

1464 | Fasting? | Mark 2:20 | azurelaw | 200213
Dear Irene, Thank you so much for providing the scriptures. May I also suggest you search the below posts in the search box at your upper right hand corner of the screen for more understanding of fastings. 6261 6280 141257 Zech 8:19 is not talking about a joyful fasting (or I should say people do not fast with joy Mat 9:15) for fasting is usually attached to sorrow, repentance (as you have written), afflictions. Please read again the context of this scripture. As to the idea that "fasting is to get the lord's attention for an urgent answer to our problem", I hope this is done with the drive of the Holy Spirit in an earnest plea and submissive to the sovereignty of God rather than a means to appeal to the Lord to get Him do anything for us. (see how sorrowful and yet submissive when Jesus prayed in the garden of Gethsemane) God has been and is watching over us without a blink (Prov 15:3) in the eyes. From the day of my birth to this very moment of my earthly life, He watches and helps at His time be it urgent or not, be it with my awareness or not...some are even fatal to my life and He helps and saves before I could realize its danger or emergency. Needless to say could I mutter an SOS to Him. Just a bit of my sharing. May we grow together by His inerrant Word. Shalom Azure |

1466 | Crying out loud Lord rescue me | 1 John 5:13 | azurelaw | 200181
Dear irene (blue.eyes), I am terribly sorry that you felt it negatively. Kindly understand and re-read the terms of use of the forum. Cheri has made the point to you that citing scriptural support is needed. We are taught to accurately handling the word of truth (2 Tim 2:15). My previous post would hope that you may clarify your statement "...i suggest to you to claim his word and take 1 text from his word and say everyday and you w ill see the difference..." as it could be misleading to advise that just picking any text from the Bible and recite it everyday in hoping to change things (I hope this is only my misunderstanding of what you said ). I don't doubt you have God in your heart, praise the Lord that you love Him so dearly; but I do hope that we can handle His Word properly and accurately so that we may grow in Him and are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming (Eph 4:14) My sincere apology for making you feel bad or misreading you (if it be the case). Shalom Azure |

1469 | Rejoicing in The Lord | Phil 4:4 | azurelaw | 200144
Dear NightJay, Scriptures: Eccl 3:4, 10-11 Rom 12:15 2 Cor 6:10, 7:10 It does not literally mean to rejoice in every single second continuously 24 hours a day. I hope the below commentaries are helpful for your understanding of the scripture. ----- John Gill Phil 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always,.... This is a repetition of the exhortation in the preceding chapter; See Gill on "Php 3:1"; with this addition "alway"; for there is always cause and matter for rejoicing in Christ, even in times of affliction, distress, and persecution; since he is always the same; his grace is always sufficient; his blood has a continual virtue in it, and always speaks for peace and pardon; his righteousness is an everlasting one, and so is his salvation, and such is his love; though some join this word with what follows, [and] again, I say, rejoice; this is what was continually inculcated by him, as being of great importance and use for the comfort of believers, and the honour of Christ. Phil 3:1 Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord,.... The Syriac version reads, "in our Lord," i.e. Christ. …, he exhorts them in a most affectionate manner, as his dear brethren in a spiritual relation, that they would make Christ their chief joy; that whatever sorrow they might have on account of his bonds, … he observes they had reason to rejoice in their Lord and Saviour; …, yet Christ should be the principal object of their joy. A believer has always reason to rejoice in Christ; in the greatness of his person, he being in the form of God, and equal to him, and therefore able to save his to the uttermost by his obedience and death, and has interest enough in heaven to make his intercession prevalent and successful and power to keep safe all that are committed to him; and in the fitness of his person to be a Mediator, and daysman, to take care of things pertaining to the glory of God, and to make reconciliation for sin; and in the fullness of his person, he having all grace in him for his people, which is all theirs, and with joy may they draw water out of the full wells of salvation in him; and in the beauty of his person which surpasses all others, a sight of which fills with joy unspeakable, and full of glory. They may, and should rejoice, as they sometimes do, in his salvation; in the contrivance of it by infinite wisdom; in the impetration of it by himself; and in the application of it by his spirit; and that because hereby justice is satisfied, the law is magnified and made honourable, sin is finished, and an everlasting righteousness brought in. Also they are called upon to rejoice in his resurrection, which is for their justification; in his ascension, seeing he then received gifts for men; and in his session at the right hand of God, which is in their nature; and in his intercession which is to their advantage; and in all the relations he stands in to them, as head, husband, father, brother, friend; and in everything that is his, and that belongs unto him, as his Gospel, ordinances, ways, and worship... --------- Darby Phil 4:4 … "Rejoice in the Lord." If he even weeps over many who call themselves Christians, he rejoices always in the Lord; in Him is that which nothing can alter. This is not an indifference to sorrow which hinders weeping, but it is a spring of joy which enlarges when there is distress, because of its immutability, and which becomes even more pure in the heart the more it becomes the only one; and it is in itself the only spring that is infinitely pure. When it is our only spring, we thereby love others. If we love them besides Him, we lose something of Him. When through exercise of heart we are weaned from all other springs, His joy remains in all its purity, and our concern for others partakes of this same purity. Nothing moreover troubles this joy, because Christ never changes. The better we know Him, the better are we able to enjoy that which is ever enlarging through knowing Him. But he exhorts Christians to rejoice: it is a testimony to the worth of Christ, it is their true portion. Four years in prison chained to a soldier had not hindered his doing it, nor being able to exhort others more at ease than he. Shalom Azure |

1470 | take up "his" cross | Luke 9:23 | azurelaw | 200134
Dear Brother Doc, Thank you for providing the link to this excellent article. When I was reading, I remember my brother wrote in the journal of his seminary in memory of his vocal teacher (who is now at the other side of the Glory) where he said..."My heart is sorrowful in losing a very dear and close friend who always inspires me so much in my spiritual walk and encourages me in my theology study. I could never forget once he said about taking up the cross...the longer you bear it, the deeper it goes into your flesh that you and the cross become one and there is no way to leave it." Thanks again for the heart-touching article. Shalom Azure |

1471 | Okay to question faith and the Bible? | 2 Tim 3:16 | azurelaw | 200133
Dear parpar, Thanks for the quote. In return, may I echo with my favourite author C.S. Lewis' "The Screwtape Letters" "My dear Wormwood,...Your man has been accustomed, ever since he was a boy, to have a dozen imcompatible philosophies dancing about together inside his head. He doesn't think of doctrines as primarily 'true' or 'false', but as 'academic' or 'pratical', 'outworn' or 'contemporary', 'conventional' or 'ruthless'. Jargon, not argument, is your best ally in keeping him from the Church... The trouble about arguments is that it moves the whole struggle on the Enemy's own ground. He can argue too; whereas in really practical propaganda of the kind I am suggesting He has been shown for centuries to be greatly the inferior of Our Father Below. By the very act of arguing, you awake the patient's reason; and once it is awake, who can foresee the result? Even if a particular train of thought can be twisted so as to end in our favour, you will find that you have been strenghtening in your patient the fatal habit of attending to universal issues and withdrawing his attention from the stream of immediate sense expreiences. Your business is to fix his attention on the stream. Teach him to call it 'real life' and don't let him ask what he means by 'real'." - C.S. Lewis If it is His will, even the most rebellious man or the wisest skeptic on earth will finally kneel before His Throne for conversion and submission. Rom 9:11-18 Rom 11:33-35 Shalom Azure |

1472 | Greeting kiss motive | Rom 16:16 | azurelaw | 200115
Dear Brother John, Thanks for responding. Yes, I agree...the key is "Holy". I believe the reason that we (Chinese) translated it this way is because we do not have the term "Holy Kiss". Whenever I read of those quoted verses above, I always think about the idea as my statement/question in point 2 and in association with a sermon I heard years ago where the pastor warned brothers or sisters earnestly that when they cared about each other in doing counselling for those who were facing problems in marriage, precaution and heavenly wisdom must be prayerfully considered...one to one and cross gender (right word/term?) connection must be avoided to escape from temptation. Otherwise, the situation could be disastrous and severely hurtful and complicated. I personally witnessed (not involved) such case at my own church and learnt of similar cases at another church. Very sad indeed. Shalom Azure P.S. Chinese don't greet with kisses :-) |

1473 | Okay to question faith and the Bible? | 2 Tim 3:16 | azurelaw | 200114
Dear pmcdonough, Scriptures: 2 Tim 3:16-17 (Bible is the inerrant Word of God) Rom 10:9-21 John 20:24-29 (Jesus commented those who did not see and yet believed) Mat 4:19-20, 21-22 (see how the disciples re-act with a simple faith) Luke 18:15-17 Hebrew 11:6, 4:2 Rom 9:14-20 If your friend SINCERELY wants to learn more about God's Word, nothing wrong about asking questions. However, please understand that it is solely God's will to open the unbeliever's eyes for understanding and God's decision to give him faith to believe the gospel. Unbelievers are spiritually dead...so how could a dead man re-act or decide to believe if it were not of God's grace and mercy to grant him the faith. Pray that your friend be enlightened by the true Light (John 1:9) in that he may know Jesus as his saviour and believe. Hope the above helpful. Shalom Azure |

1474 | Greeting kiss motive | Rom 16:16 | azurelaw | 200082
other verses: 1 Cor 16:20, 2 Cor 13:12, 1 Thes 5:26 Greeting with a kiss was their culture in that time. I find it interesting that my Chinese Bible translating the verses appear to be a focus on the motive of the behaviour whereas English version only uses the term "holy kiss". Here is the Chinese version I translate it back to English to demonstrate the difference in focus: Greeting one another with a kiss, you must be pure and sacred in your motive or mind. My question: 1/ Does the Chinese version transmit the core idea of the apostles when they said so to the church members? 2/ Could we further expand the teaching that even such a seemingly loving and caring behaviour, we should do with great caution? Thanks for your input and Shalom Azure |

1475 | How do I obtain what I'm asking for? | 2 Tim 2:15 | azurelaw | 199969
Dear David, Your question verse: Matt 21:22 "And all things you ask in PRAYER, believing, you will receive." I will first search what Jesus taught about prayer (Mat 6:8-13, Mat 6:33). Praying...is to communicate with God and ask Him to let known His will to me for He knows what we need before we ask but we hardly know His without praying and reading His Word. So, through prayer, we are submissive to His will and pray for His will be done and have faith and believe that will be done. Just my 2 cents. Shalom Azure |

Dear Hopalong, Nice to see your post again. I am not aware of "Altar Call" has been a kind of practice in certain churches. My church does not have this kind of practice except when we have the evangelizing meeting for the unbelievers. Can you give more background of this practice (e.g. its origin, purpose, argument) or direct me to the source where I can check for myself? Thanks and Shalom Azure |
