While God doesn't need us to defend Him or His Word, you must take this one thought into consideration (and if you don't, it's thank you, Jesus, anyhow). Whether YOU believe God and the Bible to be true is irrelevant. Whether you believe or not, God is going to exist and His Word will exist even after you have passed on. God loves you and has great plans for your life. You have a choice to make: if you want to be free from sin, choose Jesus. If you don't choose Jesus, just stay the same, even though I don't advise you to do that. I'm just letting you know that just because you don't believe, understand, or accept God or the Bible, doesn't make Him go away, not exist, or His Word void. You can have the truth if you want it. If not, and you can take this anyway you want, you will be eternally separated from God. WalkingTalkingBible |

43 | Did Jesus actually go to Hell? | NT general Archive 1 | WalkingTalkingBible | 117836
Hi Preacherlee98, In Ephesians 4:8-10, Paul was inspired to write about the ascension and descension of Jesus. Verse 8 states that Jesus "led captivity captive." Before Jesus' death, there was no reconciliation between God and man, so all souls were taken captive by the enemy, even in death. So, when Jesus gave His life as the ultimate sacrifice for sin, He is the way for man to be reconciled back to God. All of the souls in hell were not unbelievers. So Jesus led the believers out of captivity, into the presence of God (see Luke 16). The unsaved (unbelievers) remained in hell. Jesus obtained the keys of death and hell (Revelation 1:18) because He gave His life. Also, in 1 Peter 3:18-19, we see Jesus going to preach to the spirits in prison, which is hell. I hope this helps you out. WalkingTalkingBible |

I know James (the inspired writer of the Book of James) is Jesus' half brother. Also, Jude, the inspired writer of the Book of Jude is related to Him. I learned about these two from reading commentary in the Thompson Chain study Bible. WalkingTalkingBible |

In 1 Peter 3:19, the term "prison" designates hell. Ecclesiastes 12:7 speaks of death and says, ". . . and the spirit shall return unto God Who gave it." We know that after death, depending on the spiritual choice one made while living, one either goes into the presence of God or to hell (which is like a holding place before the lake of fire). Because Jesus' purpose was not a natural one, He would not have gone to a natural prison to set "spirits" free. Also, no one is held captive in Heaven, so heaven is not a "prison." Since we know that the enemy takes the unbeliever captive (2 Timothy 2:26), then hell would be like a prison. This is especially so before the death of Jesus because there was no reconciliation between God and man. There was only one place to go, believing or unbelieving. WalkingTalkingBible |

There are so many for both categories. Joseph (son of Israel via Rachel) - was hated by his brothers because of his dreams and favor of their father. He was hated by his brothers, sold into captivity, thrown into prison because of a lie, and finally, made it to the palace. Through all of this, he never complained or stopped trusting God. (starting in Genesis 37) Job - in all poor Job went through, he never lost his integrity and love for God (Book of Job) Esther - was born into captivity, who, because she was very humble and bold, became queen of Persia and saved her people from being killed. (Book of Esther) Daniel - was God's dream interpreter, refused to bow down to the Persian gods, continued to pray to God, even though it was forbidden, was cast into the lion's den, never stop trusting God. (Book of Daniel) Jonah - was sent by God to preach to a people whom he hated, ignored God's commission, ended up in a whale, went to preach anyhow, was mad because God saved the people (Book of Jonah) Samson - was not to mess with strange women (Philistines), played with Delilah until her plot to take his strength was carried through, died with the Philistines (starting in Judges 13:24) Jezebel - did anything to control everything, had God's prophets killed, thrown into prison, exiled, you name it. If you ever heard someone get called a "jezebel" this person is a control freak. Often, people would refer to a promiscuous woman as a "jezebel," even though Jezebel would have done anything to have her way, she is biblically known for her overpowering nature (1 Kings 18, 19, 21, 2 Kings 9 and Revelation 2:20) YoYo, I hope these help get you started WalkingTalkingBible |

A lot of things Jesus did to "fulfill all righteousness." For example, when He was baptized (Matthew 3:13-15), He didn't have to be baptized, but if we are to do all that He does, He was baptized as an example of what we are supposed to do. Remember also, He was every bit human as He was God. Knowing also, that before his death, all who died went to hell, that prison we talked about earlier, so He commended His spirit (not the Holy Spirit) into God's control.

1 John 5:7 says, "For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one." The Father (Creator), the Son (Word), and the Holy Ghost (Spirit) are three manifestations of God. The Holy Spirit is Who dwells all believers in this dispensation. Remember when Jesus said in John 15:4, "Abide in Me and I in you?" John 16:7, He says if He doesn't go away, then the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost (John 14:26) will not come. He is all in One. I didn't say that Jesus went to hell to stay. He went to set the captives (those believers that died before Christ's redemptive work on the cross) free. Before Christ died for the sins of the world, no human, except Elijah and Enoch, went into the presence of God. WalkingTalkingBible |

Let's take the limitations off of God. God created the heaven and the earth, as well as hell (Matthew 25:41). It's not a "bad thing" to think that Jesus, who is God in the flesh, the Living Word of God, went to hell to take care of business. Yes, He ascended after death, but as Ephesians 4:8-10 says, He had to first descend. There was not paradise for man until Jesus' victorious death. 1 Peter 3:19 simply says that He went and preached unto the spirits in prison. What kind of prison holds spirits? Would one call heaven prison?? The spirits are not held on earth against their wills. God is in total control at all times. He's sovereign. Jesus says in Revelation 1:18, that He has the keys to hell and death.

Nowhere in the Greek text for 1 Peter 3:19-20 does it say NOW. Anyway, as you are getting closer to God in your daily walk and as you continue to search for the truth as it is, He will reveal it to you (as He spoke to the other followers in John 8:31-32). As servants of God, we do not have to strive. I've prayed that the truth be known. WalkingTalkingBible |

I hope I didn't lead anyone to believe that Jesus was condemned to hell after His death. All I said is that after He left His natural body (on the cross), He went to get the believers, that had died before His redemptive work, and took them into the presence of God. Believing that Jesus was condemned to Hell like sinful man is a humanistic view that blocks the revelation of the truth. Jesus obtained the keys to death and hell (Revelation 1:18), where before sin was crucified and overcome by Him, no human could go into the presence of God (often called Paradise). In death, the soul and spirit are separated from the body. Hell was a holding place for both the believing and unbelieving souls although they were separated there. After Jesus' death (in that He crucified and overcome death and sin), there was now reconciliation between God and man, and those souls, who died believing God, but also died in bondage to sin, were now worthy to be in the presences of God. The Lake of Fire, I know, is the second death, the eternal separation of the soul from God after judgment. In no way does this mean that Jesus went to hell for three days. Remember, He told the other thief on the cross, "TODAY shalt thou be with Me in paradise" (Luke 23:43). WalkingTalkingBible |

YoYo, I have a few more (well four to be exact): Mary, the mother of Jesus - who, even though she didn't understand everything her Son had to accomplish, stayed by His side, even at the cross - which teaches us that we may not know everything that God is doing, just trust Him (any of the 4 Gospels) Hannah - one of the wives of Elkanah, the one "he loved," was made fun of by the other wife, Peninnah, because of her barreness; she knew she could trust God and went before Him and asked Him for a son and promised to give the son back to God if He answered her prayer, as God did allow her to have a son (Samuel, the Judge), she kept her word, praising God for answering her prayer (1 Samuel 1 - 2:1-11) Sarai (Sarah, the wife of Abraham) - when God had promised them a son in their old age (and Sarai was barren), Sarai chuckled in misbelief, went on, after years had passed before they had received this son, gave Abraham her handmaiden, and they had a son (Ishmael), God made them wait even longer, and finally, she brought forth the son God intended (Isaac); this teaches us not to be like Sarai (as the world is still dealing with the decendants of Ishmael today) and wait on God for everything - never move before God (Genesis 15 and 16) Judas Iscariot - betrayed Jesus for some silver, was greedy and selfish, didn't repent, driven to commit suicide because of his guilt (John 12:2-5; Matthew 26:15; Matthew 27) I know there are lots more but maybe someone else would like to contribute! 56 | When did the apostles receive the H S ? | NT general Archive 1 | WalkingTalkingBible | 118190
They were filled with the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. To fully understand this, there has to first be a clear understanding of who Jesus is. Jesus is the Word of God in the flesh. John 1:1, 14 says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth." Jesus said in John 15:4, "Abide in Me and I in you." He's saying to all believers, "Abide in My Word and My Spirit will be in you. While in the flesh, He dwelt with them (Immanuel), but in Spirit, he dwells in them. He had to first ascend (1 Timothy 3:16). After that, He is manifested as the Holy Spirit. WalkingTalkingBible |

Matthew 16:18-19 says, "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock [the Revelation of Christ] I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." Matthew 4:1-11 shows us how Jesus rebuked and resisted the devil by using the Word. Jude 9 shows Michael, the archangel, rebuking Satan Mark 16:17 shows us that in the Name of Jesus there is power against the devil. "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover Luke 10:19 says "Behold, I give unto you power [authority] to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you." I know there are more. . . WalkingTalkingBible |

EdB, I only gave passages. Nowhere in my answer did I say, "We can bind Satan." Satan will be bound sometime after the Rapture (Revelation 20:2). We can bind the works of Satan, in the Name of Jesus (1 Corinthians 10:13; Jeremiah 1:10). We can also plead the blood of Jesus over ours lives and others, taking the authority over the devil that was given to us when we were filled with the Holy Ghost. In Jude 9, Michael rebuked Satan by simply saying, "the Lord rebuke you." Let's understand revile: it means to "downtalk" or "slander." We, as children of God, don't have to downtalk or slander Satan (or anyone else), it's a waste of time and breath, since he's already defeated. 2 Peter 2:10-14 is a good example of how worthless it is to downtalk or slander spirits of the devil. Again, they are already defeated. Luke 10:19 is when the disciples were given power for what Jesus had charged them to do. But we, as children of God, have also been given power, through that of the Holy Ghost, to do what He has charged us, which is no different than what the disciples were given (Mark 16:17-18). Remember, EdB, when we are no longer bound by the power of sin and death, the devil becomes our enemy. We are not fighting against people and circumstances anymore, we are now in a spiritual war against the devil and his spirits (Ephesians 6:12). You might ask "what are we in a war over?" We are fighting to keep our souls saved and our eternity with God secure and God has given us the power and authority to do so. In no way will Satan walk all over a child of God who knows Whose he/she is and who he/she is in Him. If you think I'm getting too much junk, please pray for me. WalkingTalkingBible |

Salvation is eternal? So are you saying, once saved always saved? What about backsliders? Will they go to the kingdom of God just because they were once saved? So God has Satan on stand-by and everytime we "mess up" He let's him get us (a little to bring us back to humility)? If Salvation is once and for all, why are we in a spiritual warfare? Why do we have to worry about the flesh and its desires if Salvation is a "one-time deal?" Knowing that Jesus IS our protector and mediator, why, then do we have trials and tribulations? Because we're being punished for something we've done? The works of the devil are unbound through sin. Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed for its sin, why then is that same sin present today? Isn't it more than just the flesh and it's desires? I want to encourage a deeper, Holy Ghost led - study and understanding of the truth for all of us (especially me, as I am learning something new everyday). WalkingTalkingBible |

While Salvation is a gift (and a Wonderful gift indeed!), it is a conditional one. Understanding that Salvation, or deliverance, is only through Jesus, we have to acknowledge what He is offering deliverance from. First, there's the deliverance from the bondage of sin. You hit it on the nose: Satan can only present, but we have a choice whether to sin or not. Also, we are empowered by the Spirit of God, Who now dwells in believers, not to sin. Before we are saved, we are overcome by the power of sin. We had no power, in ourselves, against it. Now that we are saved, we have power, not in ourselves, but through Jesus, who now lives in us. In John 10:28-29, Jesus spake of His sheep in eternity past (My Father, which gave them to Me - this is before He even went to the cross, so Salvation hadn't been offered to Gentiles, yet there are going to be both Gentiles and more Jews that will be added to the sheepfold). Which brings us to the second thing we are delivered from and that's death, or eternal separation from God. This is what makes Salvation eternal. Matthew 10:22b says, "but he that endureth to the end shall be saved." This is why we must die daily, if we turn from righteousness and return to sin, we are no longer considered delivered (Ezekiel 18:26-28). However, Salvation is offered to all who are willing to turn from sin and submit to the will of God. We have to continue to submit ourselves to the will of God. As far as Satan and rebuking, binding, what have you, sin is the power through which Satan works. Yes, he is limited by God on what he can do, because he is not in control, God is at all times. But God is the Power that works in the believer against the powers of Satan. 2 Corinthians 10:4-6 tell US to pull down the strong holds . . . Who is it that present these actions? Yes, Satan! This is who we now have the power, through Jesus, to fight. It's not the people who come against us (and sometimes each other), it's Satan and the spirits that follow him (Ephesians 6:12). Jesus didn't suffer, die, and resurrect so that He can have power over the enemy, He already has it. He did it for us. WalkingTalkingBible |
