Thanks Hank. If you are willing how about we continue with simplicity and hopefully we can reach a conclusion without too much effort. If you were to define denomination or denominationalism, how would you?

7 | Is baptism a work? | NT general Archive 1 | Teacher | 66312
I hear so much debate about baptism. Is it a work? Is it a requirement for salvation? Are we saved before baptism? On, and on, and on... My question is, with so much that is said about baptism in the bible, the examples of conversion, the answers Peter and Paul give to the questions, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?" and "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" (Acts 2:37, 16:30 respectively) can someone explain to me scripturally whether baptism is necessary or not for salvation? If it is, why? If it is not, why?

Dear CWADE, it is funny you should say this, "If baptism was REQUIRED to achieve salvation, then Paul should have said, "Believe and be baptized and you will be saved." But, he didn't." Didn't Jesus say this exact thing in Mark 16:16, "He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned"? How is this explained?

CWADE, using this line of reasoning, I would agree. We could put any phrase after "believes" and before "will be saved" and say that this is doctrine. But this is the Lord speaking. How can we take words of the Lord so lightly?

CWADE, from the tense of your post I understand you feel very strongly about this. I must agree that baptism without belief saves no one hence the phrase "he that believes AND is baptized will be saved". I believe that Mk 16:15 reveals what is to be believed, the gospel. If I don't believe in the gospel of Jesus Christ, why would I be baptized? If I do believe in the gospel, then I would, by definition, have to believe in what it says I should do. Baptism does not save us, God's grace saves us. This is the point where people get hung up on baptism being a work. How is baptism a work? If, in order to come into (spiritual) contact with the death of Christ I must be baptized Rom 6:3, if, in order to "appeal to God for a good conscience" 1 Pet 3:21, I must be baptized, if, in order to wash away my sin, I must "arise and be baptized" Acts 22:16, AND, if all of these passages make up, albeit a small portion of, the gospel, why would I not do it?

CWADE, the feeling I get from some of the other forum members is that baptism and its importance in salvation is an issue that no one seems to agree on. I myself have written papers on the subject and through my research have concluded that, based on ALL the biblical evidence, it IS necessary for salvation, sins are not remitted UNTIL one is baptized, and until sins are remitted a person IS NOT SAVED (emphasis is just to make my point). I do not ask you or anyone else to accept my position on this. I only ask that those who are uncertain or curious about this issue study the bible, all the passages that deal with the subject, and come to an honest conclusion. If that conclusion is the same one they had before, so be it. Ps 119:160 The sum of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting. |

Hank, I will utilize the search function as it becomes necessary, thank you. The Ephesians scripture says nothing about baptism so how does it apply. I could understand your use of this passage if we were talking about how salvation came about. As previously posted, we must look at God's word in total (Ps 119.160), not just at what fits our personal belief. I respect your opinion and will leave it at that.
13 | What purpose did each baptism serve? | NT general Archive 1 | Teacher | 66513
Charis, I had to look at your profile to make sure what gender I was speaking with, not that it really matters. Anyway, I agree that there WERE three baptisms, 1) the baptism of John unto repentance, 2) the baptism of the Holy Spirit (fire), 3) and water baptism. Each of these had a purpose. My question to you is what purpose did each serve? If you have the time please cite scripture to support your position for each. Thank you.

Indiana, what passage in Acts? I don't recall. What of Acts 2:38? What of Acts 22:16? What of Gal 3:25? What of Rom 6:1f? What of 1 Pet 3:21? When you take all of God's word dealing with salvation, baptism plays a very crucial part. You say, "There are many passages that speak of salvation apart from baptism". Yes this is true but there are also many passages that speak of baptism as a part of salvation. The sum of the parts equal the whole. Subtract one element you have no whole. There are many passages that have the phrase "will be saved" attached. For example, Mt 10.22, Mk 13.13 “…he who endures to the end will be saved” Does enduring save us? Mk 16.15 “He who believes and is baptized will be saved” Does believing and being baptized (because of our belief) save us? Jn 10.9 “I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved” Does entering a door save us? Acts 11.14 “words by which you and all your household will be saved” Do words save us? Acts 16.31 “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved” Does belief save us? Rom 9.27 “The remnant will be saved” Does being a part of "the remnant" save us? Rom 10.9 “if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." Does confession save us? Rom 11.26 “And so all Israel will be saved” Does being an Israelite save us? 1 Cor 3.15 “If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved” If my work is burned am I saved? 1 Ti 2.15 “Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing” Does childbearing save us? Now you have to admit that some of these examples are preposterous. The question is which ones are and which ones are not? Does God have to mention everything necessary for salvation in every passage that deals with salvation? No, because his creation man was given the intelligence to put it all together to arrive at the one truth. |

CWADE, read Acts 8:26-40. Here we have an example of someone (ethiopian eunuch) reading scripture but not understanding it (vs 30,31). Philip, beginning at the very scripture the eunuch was reading began to teach him Jesus (vs 35). As we read on we notice that they approached some water (vs 36). What then does the eunuch say? "Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?" Where in this section of scripture does it say Philip taught this man about baptism? It doesn't, but, he knew enough about to know it was necessary for them to stop the chariot and for him to be baptized. What does vs 37 say? Acts 8:37 And Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart, you may." And he answered and said, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God." Philip said, If you believe with all your heart, you may (implying, on the other hand if you don't believe you shouldn't). The conclusion here is that if a person believes in Jesus, baptism must be included in this belief because baptism is an integral part of salvation. As many other members of the forum have said, this is a dead issue. Those that believe baptism is an important and necessary part of salvation also believe in what the bible teaches. Those that do not believe baptism is necessary for salvation would do well to re-examine "the whole counsel of God". |

I will speak rather boldy here. I believe based on what is presented in the bible, that if anyone dies prior to "complete" (I put this in quotes because who determines what complete is, but God) obedience to God's will, at best they are in the hands of God and He will judge them with His righteous judgment. At worst, they would be lost to an eternity in hell. The sad truth may be that in either case the result is the same.

You fail to realize that baptism and its purpose is part of what must be believed in. Can we just take one passage of scripture and conclude that it contains all the truth? NO! We must look at all passages of scripture that deal with a certain subject, examine the context of these passages, and come to a conclusion. All of the issues you want me to comment on have been dealt with at length, as some of the seasoned members of the forum will attest to. You may decide to believe what you want. I would hope that you would study further ALL scripture dealing with whatever issue you have questions on before arriving at a conclusion. |

1 Tim 4:14 Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance with the laying on of hands by the presbytery. Paul tells Timothy not to neglect the spiritual gift that is within him. Wouldn't this imply that he COULD neglect it. Make the necessary application as you will, John. |
