681 | What does dying once mean figuratively? | Heb 9:27 | Sir Pent | 21135
Dear Forumites, In keeping with the idea that all verses are literal until proven figurative by contradiction with other scriptures, I have a qeustion about Hebrews 9:27. The literal meaning is obviously contradicted by people such as Lazarus, Jairus' daughter and Dorcus. They all died once, were resurrected, and then died a second time. So what are we to take this verse to mean? |

684 | Origin of God? | Heb 11:6 | Sir Pent | 117269
Personal Note......................................................... Hi Kerland, Since Aniset has not updated his user profile yet, please be advised that he is a follower of a group called the Jehovah's Witnesses. That group is considered to be a cult by almost all Christians, including those on this forum. His answer to you on this question appears to be in line with orthodox Christianity, but I just wanted you to know his background. |

685 | How are pre-Christians made perfect? | Heb 11:40 | Sir Pent | 114835
Referral to another thread..................................... Hello Rowdy, In your post you spoke of whether a passage of scripture was meant to be literal or figurative. I would recommend that you type the number 19828 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right of the screen to read my thoughts on this question. Applying the method in that thread to the specific ideas of Heaven and Hell, I would say that since there are many verses that say that there is fire in Hell, and no verses that contradict that. Therefore, we can assume that it is literal. Similarly, there is a verse that speaks of the golden streets in Heaven and there are no verses that say the streets are not golden. Therefore, we can assume that the streets really are golden. Now if we get to Heaven, and they are not, I won't be entirely surprised. This isn't a critical issue, and we won't care anyway, because we'll be so happy being in Heaven with God. Nevertheless, I think it is better to believe "literal until proven figurative". |

687 | I would like more information | Heb 13:4 | Sir Pent | 112521
Personal Note.................................... Newg86, Thanks for answering my question. I was actually hoping that "Monkman" would give a little more information about himself so that I could help him more. As for you, I am glad that you have a good relationship with God, and your responses in this thread indicate that you have a teachable spirit (Psalm 143:10). They also indicate that you are searching for the truth in the Word of God, which is the best place to find it. Keep pressing on towards the goal (Phil 3:12) |

688 | I would like more information | Heb 13:4 | Sir Pent | 112522
Personal Note.................................... Nsparkman, Thanks for answering my question. I was actually hoping that "Monkman" would give a little more information about himself so that I could help him more. As for you, I am glad that you have a good relationship with God, and have chosen to allow scripture to be authoritative in your life. I would suggest that you put that information in your "user profile" on this site. That way, when you ask future questions or give answers, people can click on your name and know where you are coming from. In fact, I would encourage all new people on the forum to use this feature. |

689 | I would like more information | Heb 13:4 | Sir Pent | 112879
It seems that you are saying that having sex outside of marriage is not adultery, and that only adultery is sin. I would ask you to think about the following question. Is having sex the same as getting married in the eyes of God? There are multiple passages of scripture that seem to indicate that the act of sex between a man and a woman is a God designed way of uniting them into one, just like marriage. For instance, in Exodus (22:16) and Deutoronomy (22:28-29), it says that once a couple has had sex they must marry. This process of joining a man and woman together was part of God’s plan from the beginning when he made Adam and Eve (Genesis 2:24). This idea is not limited to the Old Testament either. Jesus even refers to it in Matthew 19:4-6 and Mark 10:6-8. Therefore, it seems that the act of sex is not limited to just the physical body, but also contains a deeper element that unites the spirit of two people in marriage. Therefore, all scripture passages that apply to marriage would also apply to having sex with someone. So if the Bible says that it is adultery to marry a person who has been divorced (Matthew 5:32, Mark 10:11-12, Luke 16:18), then it would also mean that it is adultery to have sex with a person who has been divorced. |

Personal Note............................................... Hi Monkman, Thanks for the update on your situation. I also greatly appreciate your ability to accept reproof and cousel. Prov 11:14 says, "Where there is no guidance the people fall, but in abundance of counselors there is victory." I hope that you will continue to find victory as you grow with your home church and with your brothers and sisters in Christ on this forum. |

693 | what "spirits in prison"? | 1 Pet 3:19 | Sir Pent | 24418
Another View ................................. Dear swb, Tim and I have discussed this issue thoroughly, and I hope that you will do a search and read through that thread. Basically I believe that the spirits were of all the people who died before Jesus sacrifice on the cross. I believe that Jesus preached to them so that those who believed could be saved. |

694 | Baptism by water is not necessary | 1 Pet 3:21 | Sir Pent | 59434
Personal Note ........................................ Dear TRJ1221, Thank for sharing your ideas, but this topic has been debated extensively previously on this site. In the future perhaps you could do a search first and add your comments to an existing thread. Starting a whole new one just causes a hanging primary note to stick around for a while. |

695 | Do you have to be baptized to be saved? | 1 Pet 3:21 | Sir Pent | 59558
A Different View ............................................. Dear Romans4:5, The Word of God is my guide, and I am not a Baptist, yet I agree with Hank. Your teaching that Baptism is forbidden is definately not an orthodox belief. It goes against the totality of scripture. It doesn’t make sense logically. It goes against thousands of years of church tradition, and it doesn’t fit my personal experience either. Basically, it’s just way out there, and anyone reading this thread should take it with a whole shaker of salt. |

My answer....................... Hello Joyoud, Jehovah's Witnesses are a group of people who believe in a cult. They sometimes claim to be Christians, but there are huge differences in their beliefs and what Christ taught. |

697 | stones in both your hands | 1 John 4:1 | Sir Pent | 14450
There are very few passages in the Bible which come close to that image. The one that I would lean toward would be when Moses came down from the mountain after receiving the Ten Commandments. He probably held one of the stone tablets in each hand. (Ex 34:1-4) There is also a reference in Jeremiah 43:8-10, where God tells the prophet to take large stones in his hands, bury them, and issue a warning of comming destruction. One final word of caution would be that, God is a God of peace, not of confusion. If the message was truly from God, I would greatly expect that God would make clear to the one receiving the message, what was expected. If there is confusion, the message may not be from God, and should be dealt with very carefully. |

698 | What does baptism consist? | 1 John 5:6 | Sir Pent | 23546
Clarification ................................... Dear Tim S. I found this last post of yours to be very helpful in understanding how you see Baptism. I too think that your beliefs are closer to those of most others on this forum than it first appears. It seems to me that you primarily see Baptism as the burial view (being buried with Christ and then ressurected as a new forgiven creation). Therfore, it doesn't make sense to you for a person to be saved and then go back and be buried again. I'd like to possibly help you see it a little differently. If the water itself actually "accomplished" the burial and resurrection, then your view would be logical. However, if the water is "symbolic" of the burial and resurrection, then the timeing is less relevant. For instance, we shoot fireworks in America on Independance Day, July 4th. These are symbols. The fireworks do not grant us independance, and are incapable of earning us independance. Besides that, we actually gained our independance over 200 years ago. Yet we still shoot them off as a way to celebrate and show the world that we are free. Baptism is similar. It is a Christian's way of celebrating their salvation (through faith in Christ), and showing those around them that they have chosen to be buried and become a new forgiven creation. It is an important symbol to participate in, because the Bible says to do it, and because it gives evidence that we are not ashamed of our faith. But it is still a symbol. |

699 | What is eternal life? | 1 John 5:13 | Sir Pent | 16629
What do you understand eternal life to be? I think that once a person has been created by God, that they will never cease to exist. Therefore, all human beings have eternal life. What are the characteristics of it? The answer depends on what choices we make in this life. Those who choose to deny Christ's salvation and lordship will exist forever in a state of torment, pain, and lonlieness. Those who accept Christ's salvation and lordship will exist forever in a state of worship, fulfillment, and as close a relationship with God as possible. When does it start? As soon as God created your spirit (soul, or whatever you call the spiritual part of who you are). Can it be lost? No |
