301 | Can a man know God without a Bible? | Rom 10:17 | Scribe | 41900
In adding to the mention of Enoch. I want to say that if you understand faith in Christ and how that the Holy Spirit is real you will know that you can indeed commune with God and have God speak truths to your heart that later you will see written in the Bible and you had not even read it before the Lord spoke it to your spirit man. This is the essence of the new covenant, that we would have a heart of flesh and not of stone, that we would hear a voice saying "this is the way , walk ye in it." This does not mean we have a right to make up wierd doctrines that contradict the Word. When one is yielded to the Holy Spirit and Faith in Christ they will hear the Spirit testify of Christ and make things plain to them. These things will always be in agreement with the written word. If they are not then that person is not being honest about communing with the Lord. It really is that simple. One who says I prayed all night and God told me to divorce my wife and marry the church secretary is not really honest. He either is lying and did not pray, or he did not come to the Lord with a pure heart saying God I will do whatever is pleasing to you and would rather die than willfully go my own way. This person would of course never pray about such a stupid thing in the first place but I use it to dramatize my point. The heart of man is the central theater in this conflict of good and evil and those that have a pure heart will see God. |

302 | Can a man know God without a Bible? | Rom 10:17 | Scribe | 41905
3Jo 1:11 Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God. 1Jo 3:7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. Ac 10:35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him. We know that one must have faith in Christ to be saved. I propose that all those that are truly righteous will find Christ, or God is faithful to lead all those that truly Love God to Christ. |

303 | Faith apart from reading the Bible? | Rom 10:17 | Scribe | 41908
Steve I agree with you. You are much more biblical in your understanding than those that would say you have to have read it in the bible first. I beleive that God is faithful to bring a Bible or preachers of the Bible to an honest seeker but I too had faith in Jesus Christ when as yet I had not read the Bible. I was in jail. I was crying out for God to change my life. I had this much knowledge. 1) I knew I was living a loser of a lifestyle, that I was not a good person. 2) That God still loved me , (I admit I had heard that somewere) 3) that if you pray God will help you. I prayed and prayed I was in spiritual turmoil, no rest for my soul After many days, I heard a man pray over his food in jest "God bless the mess! In Jesus Name!" I knew he was being irreverant, but when he said "In Jesus Name!" It was as if a flood light came on in my heart! I got on my knees and ask the Lord to change my life and get me a Bible IN JESUS NAME, and I believed He heard me. The next day I was moved to a place where I could get a Bible and while I waited for the delivery of the Bible I found some torn out pages of the book of James on the floor. That became my Bible for several weeks and it was what I needed to start my life of sanctification in Christ. May God Bless you All. |

304 | OT practices not followed today? | Rom 14:5 | Scribe | 58828
Romans 14:5-6 One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks. Good Question. The New Testament had much to say about how such things as all meats were indeed clean and the message behind the dietery laws was the point, though in thier blindness they never did get it. The Truth has now come which is Jesus Christ and our personal relationship with Him. Sin is still around and we must resist it but we do so by the more obvious methods of not "eating unclean things" such as watching ungodly TV shows that fill our minds with sexual lusts, or not "touching the unclean things" such as living in sexual sins, alcohol, anger wrath, pride, and other sins of the flesh. The blind man will not eat pork but will sleep with a new girlfriend every few months. The blind Jew will keep laws that are convienient to give him a sense of legal obligations yet not ones that he considers too much of a drudgery or ones that might be impractical. The reason some Jews who do not believe in Jesus will keep some Laws and not others is that they have been emboldened to approach their religion this way through false teachings in the Talmud going back to the time of Christ and built upon so that they keep "for the law of God" the traditions of men. These traditions have changed the Law of God to make it more palatible to the people and more beneficial to the teachers (such as monetary giving). The Lord will not accept it and they will all be ashamed in the end. The honest one how really attempts to keep all the law will end up having faith in Jesus as the fulfillment of the Law. |

305 | Is 1 Cor 1:4-7 same gifts as chap 12 | 1 Cor 1:4 | Scribe | 63310
1 Cor 1:4-9 As it relates to Speaking In Tongues. In my study of this subject I have been amazed at the amount of scriptures that cover the topic of both speaking in tongues and also Spiritual gifts. I think we grow accustomed to hearing the same scriptures used by those that believe these gifts are for the church today and another group of select scriptures used by those that think it isn't and taking both sides it seems that only a very few of the vast amount of scriptures on this subject are ever contemplated. In order for me to cover them all and leave nothing unturned I will write a seperate document that I will post to the room at a later time. That being said I will leap into the discussion at the point of I Corinthians since it is probably going to be the most quoted book on this subject in this thread on this board. I was going to begin with 1 Cor 12 but having spent time meditating on it beforehand I could not help but see that 1 Cor 1 is vital to the subject as well. As a side note I have noticed that the first chapter of many books of the bible are critical for understanding the rest of the book. 1 Corinthians 1:4-9 I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ; That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord. First of all I would like to note that Paul in his prayers for the Corinthians had great joy and thanksgiving for the fact that they were operating in the Spiritual gifts in abundance. This is important to bring balance to what he says later in chapter 14, those passages that often seem to be the only ones some know on the whole subject of tongues that they use to make it sound as though Paul said they should not speak in tongues anymore becuase it is the lesser of the gifts. That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; It is not fair to apply your own interpretation to the words "utterance and knowledge" here. If you would treat it fairly you will notice that not only is it logical to apply the words all utterance and knowledge as a reference to the spiritual gifts they were enriched with as seen later in the book. I rely more on comparing certain truths with one another than I do on the exact syntax of the original language so I am more persuaded by the method of seeing certain concepts and understandings in the bible reiterated by Paul in different ways than I am haggling over the exact tense of a greek word. Therefore I am persuaded that my interpretation of the above quote is correct (that it applies to spiritual gifts) because of verse such as these… 2Co 8:7 Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also. 1 Corinthians 12:8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 1 Corinthians 13:2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. I am not a Greek scholar, however leaning upon the understanding of those that are, and that have written commentaries for our edification I find that a brief review of commonly available online commentaries show that most of these scholars were convinced that the gifts of the Holy Spirit mentioned later in the chapter is what Paul is referring to when he uses the phrase.. “enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge;” Albert Barne’s Notes on the New Testament The People’s New Testament Commentary Thompson, (Thompson Chain Reference (utterance given in aid of religious testimony) John Nelson Darby, Synopsis of the Bible John Gill’s Exposition of the Bible Matthew Henry Part 2 of this post will follow immediately |

306 | Is 1 Cor 1:4-7 same gifts... Part 2 | 1 Cor 1:7 | Scribe | 63312
PART 2 PLEASE SEE PREVIOUS QUESITION If that be the case then the next verse would say that the spiritual gifts did have their place in confirming that God was indeed among them. 1 Corinthians 1:6 Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: It seems that one thing both side of the tongue controversy in the church agree on is the tongues were for a sign for the unbeliever. Used in public utterance they were a confirmation that God was speaking through the believer. This is often the argument given against the use of tongues today. I am not sure why using this fact, (that tongues is a sign for the unbeliever), would preclude using the gift today since we still have plenty of unbelievers. 1 Corinthians 14:22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. Now whether you have agreed with me so far or not one thing is certain; this next verse does tell us that the gifts are to remain in the church until Jesus come again. 1 Corinthians 1:7 So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ: Later when looking at I Cor 13 we will see that the gifts are to end at some time in the future called the time when “that which is perfect” is come. Some claim, (but not many of a scholarly reputation) that “that which is perfect” is the Bible by taking a few verses from the Bible such as “the law of the Lord is perfect” etc and trying to establish that when the books of the bible were collected or the last book Revelation was written that then “that which is perfect” as it relates to God’s Revelation to man had occurred. But as we carefully examine the passage in 1 Cor 13 we will see why you will not find that interpretation in hardly any commentaries but only in some denominational literature of a few groups that others have labeled “ceasationists”. But for now we must stay focused on the verse at hand. The purpose of the Holy Spirit Gifts in the Church were for the edification of the saints which both sides of the tongues controversy agree on. This verse not only tells us that the gifts will remain in the church until Jesus Comes again but also that these gifts are beneficial in keeping us ready for that day.. or that they help us to be “waiting” in the proper way for that day. And if you were not convinced that verse 6 Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you means that the gifts do confirm that Christ is in you, then I think verse 8 puts all doubts to rest; 1 Corinthians 1:8 Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. I have so much more to say on this and I imagine before we are finished I will have written a small book on it, but suffice it say that for now I will end with this introduction to the subject of the gift of tongues and mention that while we procede further in the days weeks and months to come I will attempt to explain what I see the Bible is telling us is the PURPOSE for the Holy Spirit Gift of Tongues. In summary for this post I see that some of the PURPOSES, of the gift of tongues and other spiritual gifts such as the Corinthians received from the Lord and did operate in (in spite of the need for correcting abuse) are as follows: 1 Corinthians 1:5 That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; Purpose of spiritual gifts: is a confirmation to the world that Christ was in them. 1Co 1:6 Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: 1Co 1:8 Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. Purpose of spiritual gifts: that it did help them be in the proper state of Waiting for the Lord Jesus Christ to Come Again 1Co 1:7 So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ: Purpose of spiritual gifts; That to be without the spiritual gifts would be in a state of “coming behind” or to not have spiritual gifts is not as good as being having them, and even to have all of them in the church is better. 1Co 1:5That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; 1 Corinthians 1:7 So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ: Please understand that this is only a fraction of what I will post on this subject. I am well aware of all the areas I have not touched upon yet. I am only laying a foundation to help clarify other things we will read in 1 Corinthians. 307 | biblical reason for todays mondern toung | 1 Cor 1:7 | Scribe | 63319
I am answering this question over a year after it has been posted. It is very unlikely that the original poster will read it but I am going to address it carefully with biblical evidence as the poster requested in an effort to help build this wonderful database of biblical interpretations from fellow believers from all over the world. Looking at the text tecnotrog is referencing we see a peculiar scene... Acts 2:4-13 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this? Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine. Several things are obvious here at first glance.. one is that more than the 12 were speaking, since more than 12 languages are mentioned. Most commentaries I look at agree that outpouring of the Spirit was upon the entire 120 and not just the 12 apostles (Acts 1:15...number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,) most also agree that all of them were doing the speaking in tongues. However some commentators and many modern christians say that they think that only the 12 did the public speaking in tongues when the crowds gathered. In reading the passage we see that there are more than 12 nations that heard them speak in their own language. Therefore if it were only the 12 speaking then they must have had such a gift of speaking in tongues that one or more of them could move from one known language to another as the Spirit willed. Or another possibility would be that the hearers were having the miracle upon their ears so that it would not matter how many nations were gathered 17 or 200 they would have all heard their own language. Some have suggested this and let us take it up for a moment. If it did not matter how many nations had gathered, that they would still have heard their own language, then the question would have to be asked which language was coming out of the speaker? One particular language or whatever the Lord wanted at the time? If the miracle happened upon the ear of the hearer than it does not seem fair to conclude that one could know which language the speaker was speaking. One could say he was speaking Arabic, but another that just walked up says nay he is speaking my tongue which is of Egypt. Who is right? And if this be the case then how can you know when you hear a tongue whether it is a known language or not. Here are two from another country both hearing their own language from the same speaker. Now if that is not the case then you must say that one of the 12 was able to speak one language and then instantly start speaking another. If we limit it to only the 12 then one of these two scenarios must be correct, 1) that the miracle occurred on the ear of the more than 12 nations that gathered, or 2) that the speaker could switch tongues, because more than more 12 nations heard their tongue. The other possibility of course is that all 120 were speaking and not just the 12 in which case one could then make an argument for their stand that authentic speaking in tongues is always in a known language, while siting this passage as their biblical evidence. Now we consider the verse.. Acts 2:13 Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine. What are the possibilities here? 1) these men heard them speak in languages that were known, the disciples having never learned them in language school.. and said “they are drunk” Instantly we see how illogical that view would be. The last thing I am going to think if I see you speak in a language you have never taken the time to learn, (and especially if I hear them speak in more than one language they had never learned), is that you are drunk. I might think you are a genious, nay more than a genious, a superman, one with intellect beyond any man that had ever been before.. but I am not going to think your inebriated with alcohol. 308 | biblical reason for todays mondern toung | 1 Cor 1:7 | Scribe | 63320
PART TWO 2) another possibility would be that these mockers these “others” than the ones that did hear their own languages, did not understand the language, because they were not from the country of the language being spoken, and so instead of understanding that Peter was speaking in Egyptian they though Peter was just babbling meaningless words. This would of course give them reason to say “they are drunk.” And on this note, some have said that Peter and the apostles were addressing the crowd as in a preaching mode, and they were speaking to them in their own language. The text says they were speaking of the wonderful works of God. Comparing this passage to the others in Acts it would seem they were praising God and in a state of addressing God not the people but that we can take up another time, suffice it to say for now that if they addressing the people in a preaching style of body language (looking at the people and declaring the wonderful works of God to them) and speaking in their own language and a group came up and heard them speaking in this manner, calling them drunk would not fit and would rather make the mockers appear drunk it is so out of context with the scene. Just because the mockers could not understand the language, it would not have been a sight that would make them think the speaker was drunk. Certainly they had heard others in this international time of holiday speaking to groups in languages other than the mockers understood. Did they go about calling anyone they heard speaking in a language they did not understand “drunk?” and if they did would not the mockers be the ones people would say were drunk. No it would fit much better if we understood that the mockers not only did not understand the language being spoken but that they saw that the disciples were speaking this tongue to the heaven lies in praise to God. Then it would fit as they would think this display of emotionalism to be that of those filled with too much new wine. 3) And we have not yet exhausted this idea of why the mockers did not understand the language if that be the case. a) either the mockers did not understand the language and they saw the emotionalism of praising God with unknown tongues and called the men drunk, or b) he mockers heard the language understood it and yet called them drunk because they were saying things that they did not agree with on a religious basis. This does not seem to fit either. We know that Paul and Jesus were accused of being mad by those that did not agree with their theology, but they did not associate it with being drunk. To be drunk one looses their coherent senses so that they do not do well in constructing sentences and one thing that normally gives away a drunk man is the fact that you notice that he is not making sense. It seems far more logical that the reason they were mocking was because the disciples were showing emotionalism of Praising God maybe with hands uplifted which was a common method of the Jew and that they were loudly praising God .. and these mockers not understanding the language said they were beside themselves with emotionalism because they were drunk even to the point of pretending they could speak in a language they did not know. c) If the mockers could not understand the language. Then the question must be asked Why not? 16 or 17 nations were mentioned, were these mockers of a nation that was excluded from the Grace of God? That could not be since the message was to go out to all the world. Were these individuals of a nation that was mentioned but the miracle did not occur on their ears? Was this due to some predestined plan of God that these particular men should not get the chance to understand the message? NOW READ CAREFULLY… If these mockers were of a nation that was listed, but they did not understand the language so that they accused the disciples of babbling and being drunk.. Could it be that the speaking in tongues by the disciples might sound as a known language to one hearer and as vain babbling to the next? Looking at this passage only for biblical evidence that the speaking in tongues was not always a known language to those that heard is clear by this text. |

309 | Is smoking a sin? | 1 Cor 3:16 | Scribe | 56051
I think you will get different answers. The main point would be to allow God to have total control of your life. If you know that God wants you to quit then you can have faith that God will help you. I can tell you from experience that I went through the same question when I was saved. I smoked for several months before I even thought about whether smoking was a sin or not. I was born again and still smoked. There came a point in my spiritual growth within a few months when I realized God was convicting me of this unhealthy habit so I began to pray about quiting. To make a long story short the Lord taught me some great truths about resisting sin. In a nutshell I learned that I needed to be willing to suffer in the flesh to cease from sin. I told the Lord that I would suffer withdrawal of nicotine even to to point of death than to deliberately sin against him and grieve His heart with known sin. I went through a week of withdrawal and then I found the smell of ciggarettes very irritating and obnoxious. God will deliver you if you are willing to suffer for Him. This is how we should live for the Lord. Is sexual temptation strong for you? Then be willing to suffer the denial of yielding to it even to the point of death.. what will happen? You will get victory over it and it will become offensive to you outside of marriage. Name any type of sin, if you are willing to suffer in the flesh to cease from it, you will soon be free and strong in that area of your life. Only those that keep yielding to it stay addicted. God Bless you as you follow Him. |

310 | based on 1 Corinthians 5 | 1 Cor 5:5 | Scribe | 104753
Wow. What a refreshing post. Willing2change4ic you're desire for change is from the Lord and evidence that God is working in a mighty way in your life. And as the Lord convicts you with His Holy Spirit of Love and goodness you find you are more and more miserable when indulging in the flesh. The Lord is faithful to make you miserable so that you will be through sinning and seek to know the Lord in righteousness and faithfulness. 1 Corinthians 5:5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. Better for us to flee from sins of the flesh but if after we have known the goodness of the Lord and walked in the light of salvation, if we return to the carnal appetites of the flesh, we find out two truths very quickly. 1) we are not past sinning. And 2) though it may bring a temporary pleasure even that is not the same as it used to be and we are miserable even while indulging. If we keep it up the Lord will allow the powers of darkness to bring desctructions into our lives to discipline us. There is no need to experience that. Your own misery drives you to the cross for forgiveness and repentance. Your own desire to walk with God and know his light and life in fulness makes you not able to go all the way into sin. So you may fall and indulge, but if you repent and cry out to God in repentance, He will hear and deliver you from your own appetites. Do not despair. Though you might feel despair, shame and as if you have gone too far to ever be used by God, remember that you can be set free by His Grace. You can walk in holiness consistantly. You can have victory over ever vice. What once seemed to revisit you every few months can be something that never rises again so long as you live. The Lord is able to do this. All you have to do is believe and call upon him with fervent faith. Tell the Lord that you will not give up. Tell Him you believe He is able and you refuse to doubt it. After all what choice do you have? If you return the way of sin.. You will regret it. You know you will.. there is no peace nor happiness there.. Since you know you will regret it, everytime you fall, the next time you are tempted, just say.. This time I am going to say no, it is not worth the regret that I know will come, before the day is over or even the sin is finished I will be in regret, but if I choose to obey I will experience joy. Joy is far better, I will live a life without regret. God bless you willing2. You are going to make it and you are going to overcome. |

joel k. Let me encourage you not to give up on the forum. Don't get me wrong I think you should give up on debates of any kind. But don't give up on posting your thoughts about a verse. Approach the forum differently. Don't respond to anyone that does not agree with your answers. Just post your thoughts and associate them with a verse. Over time this database will be a blessing to generations to come. Think of the potential. Sure there will be lots of various teaching and doctrines. But this is an open forum. The way to keep a peaceful spirit and not be grieved is to ignore those that attempt to draw you into debates. If they tell you you are wrong, just say God bless you. and do not respond or defend your answers. I am interesed in your answers to questions on scriptures. I don't even read those posts that people give trying to tell someone they are in error. So don't worry about them they expose themselves when they attempt to tear down another believer. It is tempting for human nature to defend our positions and call it "contending for the faith" but in reality it is raw pride. If the Lord has revealed something to you share it in a spirit of meekness and humility, never dogmatically about things that have not been fully exhausted by any man much less us, and then do not even respond to those that post replies that attack your position. This is extremely difficult to do for many of us. But it will make us much better people if we learn to "turn the other cheek" and "answer not again." It will make us like Christ. God Bless you and feel free to email me as well. scribefaith@hotmail.com |

I have read the thread joel and it demonstrates what I was saying. It is best that we do neither respond toward the individual posting nor in defence of any post that seems to have taken something wrong. To get the most out of the form and to contribute with a spirit of excellence, my suggestion is that we always post as though we are writing a book realizing that our audience is everyone and not a particular individual. Your original post was excellent. The truth was pure and the spirit of which you wrote was proper grief for the new seeker. The truth of your statement concerning waiting on God for the Holy Spirit to convict the new believers as they grow is a very important message. Many saints can testify to how they grew in the Lord and were convicted about certain things Months after they were born again things that they never thought about until God was ready to deal with it. It is not the Love of Christ that would try and clean someone's life up who just started coming to church. Of course if they ask then we should give them scriptures, but it would not be the Spirit of the Lord to not fellowship with them if they were expressing a desire to be changed. The Lord is patient with us we better be patient with them. As you mentioned Paul said it was those that did not repent that had to be dealt with more severely. Those that claim it is not sin. But even an new believer might say such a thing becuase of the addiction or the struggle. Isn't that what satan always has used to get us to trip up in our own lives.. he says "it is not sin" it is ok.. and we indulge.. then regret. Then he accuses and we are crippled. Until we return in faith with fresh resoltution to not fall for that lie again. We cannot always understand all the meaning and intent and background of what someone is saying so we often misunderstand and then answer accordingly. The person takes offence becuase they have been misunderstood and the next thing you know you have posts going back and forth accusing and being accused..and who is the author of that? I think if we always posts in generalities such as.. " I a do not know your particular situation, and I am not accusing you of wrong doing" But I have noticed that there is a need in the church for christians to be sensitive to how new believers take time to grow.. etc " Rarely will one take offence to such a post and if they do feel compelled to defend themselves nothing really needs to be said on your part for fear of feeding any debates. Therefore. Keep up the good work brother, your original post on this thread was excellent. I am glad you are adding rich content to the form. Here are my rules that I follow in all debates. 1) Do not debate. (I do not agree with debating) 2) Do not strive (the servant of the Lord must not strive) 3) Do not tell people they are wrong. It is better to say "The bible says etc..." or to say.. "I may have misunderstood you.. or.. I have noticed that there is a need in the body of christ to understand such and such." More people find it easier to hear such words than "You are wrong.. or "You are in error" or other confrontational words. 4) Do not be dogmatic about your views on scriptures that are shrouded by 2000 years of cultural differences and customs. Such as exactly what Paul meant when he said a woman should cover her head. Of course you may think you know for certain but it is better to always be humble in our understanding that on many things we see through a glass darkly. 5) Realize we are not called to make everyone agree with us. It is enough that we are found worthy by the Grace of God to even utter his Holy Name, and to share the good news of salvation through faith in Christs sacifice for us. Let us be content to utter the good news even one time and not think we have to make everyone agree. We can utter it and go our way rejoicing that we were used by God, we who were once His enemies. Thanks be to God for His unspeakable gift. May God Bless you as you study His Word. |

I am thankful for the holiness of God. He predestinated all of mankind to be before him in holiness and Love, all they have to do is allow Him to sanctify them through faith.
315 | What is "perfect" in 1 Cor. 13:8-12? | 1 Cor 13:12 | Scribe | 46753
1 Corinthians 13:10-12 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. The context makes it clear that it is talking about when we see Him face to face. Now whether it is talking about when you die and go to be with Him or when He comes again to wrap everything up and usher us into that eternal reality of the Hope we have is a question, but I think it is more likely that Promise of eternal perfection of the restoration of all things that Paul is speaking about. He is saying it as if everyone knows what he is talking about based on well established theology which would not be death so much as it would be the eternal promise of Glory in Christ. Now here is something that those who would try and fit the writing of the Bible into this passage. "Now we know in part." Paul the Holy Spirit inspired writer knows only in part. By the time John finished Revelation Paul was dead. And so Paul did not find the promise of knowing all things or the "then face to face" at the completion of Revelation becuase he was not here. As wonderful and perfect as the Scriptures are, we still know in part. And what we do know causes us to look longingly for Him to come and make us to know all things in Him. God Bless you as you Study His Word. |

316 | How do you interpret this verse? | 1 Cor 14:2 | Scribe | 53840
Wow, how blashphemous. This is the depth of intellectual dishonesty some are willing to go out of fear of the Gifts of the Spirit. Would he say Paul was guilty of this paganism, since Paul said in this Chapter, "I speak in tongues more than ye all" and "forbid not to speak in tongues" This type of interpretation is beneath commenting on because the person doing it could not possibly believe it to be true in the context of the passage. It must be an attempt to slander the Holy Spirit Gifts and that is a very dangerous thing. I never try to convince someone who does not want to learn about tongues but I always feel God's anger at an atempt to change the word to teach somehthing that would slander what the saints did in Acts. It is one thing to say you think it does not happen today. It is quite another to say what the apostles did was "not of God". When a preacher does that he seems to be lining up with the Pharisees. |

317 | How do you interpret this verse? | 1 Cor 14:2 | Scribe | 53964
If we read this passage in context we read that to pray in tongues edifies oneself, how when there is an interpreter? No for if there is an interpreter the whole church is edified, therefor the type of speaking in tongues here that edifies oneself is the type that prays to himself and to God. Or if there be no interpreter let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God. Now if a man is speaking to God, it is not a pagan ritual and if a man is speaking to God it is indeed edifying to himself. To edify yourself by praying is not a sin but a necessity for christian growth and strength. To edify ones self is not mentioned here as something he should not do but simply a statement of fact. To speak to God in tongues silently (not literaly silent as if in thought only but silent as in not loudly as if you would have the floor and want all people to be quiet a moment and listen to you which would be the opposite of a private communion, howbeit, the "silent" speaking between you and God may and would most likely be audible as I know no other way a saint in Acts could have "spoken in tongues"), therefore to speak silently in tongues between you and God is an edifying experience for you and this is a positive thing, and of course one needs such edifying spiritual exercises such as prayer and fastings, singing to "himself" in songs and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in his heart to the Lord (which in the case of singing to himself has nothing to do with public church singing to edify the body of Christ either, and yet we are encouraged to do so as a means of being filled with the Spirit (Eph 5:15) Paul lets us know in I Corinthians that to pray only to ourselves and to God though it does indeed edify ourselves which we need, this does not edify the body in the public fellowship therefore he does not say, "so quit praying in tongues and strike it from your Bibles" No he says, pray that you may interpret, so that you can give forth the interpretation of the Holy Spirit inspired tongue that the whole church may hear your interpretation and be edified. Not that the tongue or the interpretation is to be handled as the written Word in respect to inspiration but understanding that the gift is working through us by faith and we are getting across to the Body Scripturally based truths from the heart of God that are relative to that Local assembly for that moment. A word in season if you will. Sometimes the body of Christ needs a specific word of edification as it relates to their own issues and God is faithful to do this if we are open to let Him. |

318 | What is praying in the spirit? | 1 Cor 14:14 | Scribe | 85772
1 Corinthians 14:14-15 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. To pray in the spirit in this context is to pray in tongues. |

319 | "Speaking in tongues"? | 1 Cor 14:15 | Scribe | 43658
The reason some churches believe in speaking in tongues is that they have taken the stand that the Bible is true. That God put the subject in the Bible for a reason. That if some use it wrong or some would make it up should not steer away the honest heart from wanting to know what God wanted us to know about it. Christians should reject anything about tongues that is not in the Bible. But a christian that wants to know what God thinks should embrace everything about tongues that is in the Bible. I never bother trying to persuade someone to believe in tongues, I don't see any scriptural evidence for preaching that way. I only teach those that believe in the gift in tongues as written in the scriptures. I will teach on the purposes of God behind giving the gift to the church as seen in the scripture. It is there for a reason. I only try to know and make known the revealed reason as seen in the scripture. I am careful not to attempt to persuade a person that does not believe tongues is real for fear of having the precious gifts of the Holy Spirit as written about in the scriptures maligned or spoken against. If someone had not made up thier minds and wants to know why God put it in the Bible I will gladly bring out all the scriptures on it and show them the big picture. But if they are adamently opposed to tongues I am careful not to attempt this. |

320 | Can you learn to pray in the Spirit? | 1 Cor 14:15 | Scribe | 85983
1 Corinthians 14:14-15 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. Sticking to the Word of God as our final authority, we must declare that praying with the spirit is speaking in tongues. Can you learn to speak in tongues? No Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 2:6-8 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? The 120 in the upper room did not learn how to speak in tongues, the just started speaking them. Can you also recieve this gift? Yes. Acts 2:33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. Acts 2:38-39 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. And that is God's Word on the Subject. This type of praying with the Spirit in tongues all believers can have, but when Paul says "do all speak in tongues" he is referring to the speaking outloud with another with the gift of interpretation in the public church meeting. Not all will do that or should becuase it would be confusion, and so he says if there is no interpreter let him pray to himself and God (in tongues) which means that they all could pray with the spirit in tongues but not all of them should speak outloud as to the whole congregation in tongues at the same time, or without waiting for the interpretation. |
