Hi Meusing, Good we need a scholar of the original languages I have a little Demotic Greek, though I have not used it since my son was in kindergarten. We were living in a predominantly Greek area of Sydney at the time and a few of us anglo aussies decide to learn a little, kali imera, oops I do not think I remember much. Is that croswalk the site that has the prayer group and the chat room? If it is I have been there. What is the Swordsearcher bible programme? I have something called Parsons Technology from Cedar Rapids Idaho on disc but it is getting dated. Andy |

Yes Angel, They will "look on Him whom they have pierced" zechariah12:10 but not until "the fullness of the gentiles "has been brought in. I believe that Jesus died for everyone right from the start, if tthe Jews had accepted him then they would have brought us in as converts or protlytes anyway, instead it is the other way around. This is fine Angel, I am interested in etymology and translations and words in their own right. Just keep on with what you feel the Spirit prompting you to say. Yes Witness does carry the judicial connotation of bearing witness,of being able to know that what John the baptist or John the evangelist saw was Truth and not a lie. My wife and I are going to be away from the computer until next Thursday afternoon. We are having a short break away in the bush. I will have more to say later. Andy |

Part 3 John1:15-18 Verse 15 John 1:15 John testified about Him and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.'" (NASB) When John the Baptist testified about Jesus he speaks of Jesus having a higher rank that himself because though Jesus came after Him he existed before him. Later on Jesus Himself was to say in John 8:58 “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am." This is part of what some like to refer to as the mystery of the incarnation and has its reference in the Nativity Stories. By this I mean that the nativity stories explain how Jesus who pre-existed time itself, and who therefore pre-existed Abraham, who was in the beginning with the Father as co-creator of everything that is came to be born into the world He made; as one of us! Verse 16 -18 “For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.” God’s favour comes to us through Jesus Christ so that we receive the free gift of grace abundantly. Moses it was who brought the Law to the People of God which law exacts obedience under penalty while grace and truth bring freedom from the law through the salvific gift of Jesus’ death for us. Verse 18 The prologue ends much as it begins with the reference to Jesus, the Logos and only Son of God as being the only one who has ever seen the Father and who came to make God Known. This same Jesus who at the time of writing the Gospel had already returned to the bosom of the Father. |

part 2 John 1 11- 14 Verse 11 Jesus came first of all to the People of God, to the Jews but most of them did not receive him as the Messiah, the Son of God but only as Jesus the son of Joseph the carpenter and Mary. Luke 4:21-22 reads “And He began to say to them, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." And all were speaking well of Him, and wondering at the gracious words which were falling from His lips; and they were saying, "is this not Joseph”s son?"” NASB Matthew13:55-56 reads “"Is not this the carpenter”s son? Is not His mother called Mary, and His brothers, James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? "And His sisters are they not all with us? Where then did this man get all these things?"" NASB Mark 6:3 reads” "Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not His sisters here with us?" And they took offense at Him."NASB Verse 12 I find the wording of this verse very interesting, it reads:”But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, John 1:12 NASB To those who received Him Jesus gave the RIGHT to become children of God, salvation is not a privilege for the few but the right of all people, everyone can claim it. As many Jews who did receive him along with others who were non Jews such as the Canaanite woman, mentioned by both Matthew and Luke though not by Mark or John, see Matthew 15:21-28 and Mark and: 24 -30, were given the right to become children of God. The following link will take us to three Synoptic Gospel charts which compare each one to the Gospel of John; these will be useful later when we are studying the “signs” in John. http://www.users.bigpond.com/ajblair9/Andrew/Synoptic_Chart.htm The words “ even to those who believe on His name” at the end of verse 12 refer on to all those who have come to believe in the Name of Jesus, those of us who unlike Thomas did not touch the wounds in his body, we also have the right to become children of God. Verse 13. “Who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.” NASB This verse explains that unlike Judaism where most people become Jews simply by being born into a Jewish family or of a Jewish mother, children of God or Christians cannot become so by being born into a Christian family or by having a Christian mother. Children of God are willed and desired to be so by the Father. God our Father wills everyone to claim the right of our salvation; this is not anything we can initiate; only God can do this. Verse 14 John 1:14 “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.” NASB Now returns mention of the Word. That Word which was in the beginning with the Father was made flesh and dwelt among us. The nativity stories in Matthew 1:18-24 and Luke1:26 -38 explain how this came about. Notice that John speaks about this in the past tense, writing from beyond the event and looking back on this “and we saw His glory"; a glory that could belong to none other that the only Son of God, a glory that was grace filled and truth filled! |

Part one John 1:6-10 John 1: 6-17 Verses 1 – 18 of John chapter one form the prologue to Johns Gospel, so I ought to have included verse 18 among those set for us to study, I apologise that I did not realize this to begin with. John 1:18 reads “No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him. NASB “ John 1:6 John 1:6” There came a man sent from God, whose name was John. “NASB At verse six we read of a man named John sent by God. We read of his annunciation in Luke 1:5-23 and of his annunciation in Luke 1:57-80, note the prophetic description of the works of John the Baptist given by his father Zechariah in Luke 1:76 -79. "And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the lord to prepare his ways; to give to his people the knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, with which the sunrise from on high will visit us, to shine upon those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace." NASB St Mark begins his Gospel with the preaching of John the Baptist Mark 1:4-8: “John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And all the country of Judea was going out to him, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. John was clothed with camels hair and wore a leather belt around his waist, and his diet was locusts and wild honey. And he was preaching, and saying, "After me One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to stoop down and untie the thong of His sandals. "I baptized you with water; but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." NASB Note the words of Isaiah 40:3 fulfilled in Mark 1: 2-3 “As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: "BEHOLD, I SEND MY MESSENGER AHEAD OF YOU, WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY; THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, "MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE LORD, MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT.""NASB For more Scripture on John the Baptist go to Matthew chapter 3. All four Gospels mention John the Baptist because he was the last prophet of that former age, he was sent to usher in the present age. He was a type of Elijah who was to return to proclaim the presence of the Messiah. See Matthew 17:12-13 and 12; Mark 9:11-13. Luke omits this reference in the corresponding place in his gospel. Matt 17:11-13” And He answered and said, "Elijah is coming and will restore all things; but I say to you that Elijah already came, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they wished. So also the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands." Then the disciples understood that He had spoken to them about John the Baptist” NASB. Mark 9:11-13 “They asked Him, saying, "Why is it that the scribes say that Elijah must come first?" And He said to them, "Elijah does first come and restore all things. And yet how is it written of the Son of Man that He will suffer many things and be treated with contempt? "But I say to you that Elijah has indeed come, and they did to him whatever they wished, just as it is written of him." NASB John 1:7-9 John the Baptist was initially and sometimes mistaken for the Messiah, see John 1:20 and following :“And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed, "I am not the Christ." NASB Verse 8 tells us that John was not the “Light” but one who came to testify about the “Light”. This true Light, Jesus the Word, the Logos would enlighten everyone when he came into the world. Verse 10. In verse 10 we read that He,Jesus, was already in the world, so the prophecy is now news, Good News, rather than a coming event. Jesus became incarnate and entered incognito into the world which he himself had made. References: Genesis 1:1 with John 1:1 and following, also 1: John 1:1-3 and Colossians 1:15 -17. I guess we all know what the very first words in the Bible are so I will only quote the other two here. 1 John 1:1-3: “What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the Word of Life. And the life was manifested, and we have seen and testify and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was manifested to us. What we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ.” NASB Col 1:15-17: “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities;all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” NASB |

Note: : A Study of John's Gospel. Note: Reformer Joe, if you would like to join the three of us these are the next verses I want us to consider, I have sent both Angel and Cynthia a copy. I suggest we go away and read them in our Bibles and pray over them and then bring our answers back here on the 12th April. Then we will all post them and then discuss them. John 1:6 There came a man sent from God, whose name was John. John 1:7 He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe through him. John 1:8 He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light. John 1:9 There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man. John 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. John 1:11 He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him. 17 | A Study of John's Gospel. | John 1:1 | Rainbow Maker | 40540 | ||
John 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. John 1:11 He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him. John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, John 1:13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. John 1:14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. Right on Angel1, Just to reiterate some of the things you have said: John 1:10 says: He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. Jesus, the Logos, he who "spoke" the world into being came down into this world, the world that was made through him and was not known. Furthermore Jesus came to his own, to the Jews, the chosen people of God and they did not know him. John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, John 1:13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. This, above is the part that tells us that those of us who do receive Jesus then have the right to become the Spiritual children of God, spiritual because we are born not of blood and flesh but of the spirit through the will of God. Then John says again that the word became flesh and lived amongst us and we saw his glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father. Here John speaks for all the people who saw the glory of the Son shining through his physical presence, how wonderful that would have been. Andy |

Matt 21:22 "And all things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive." Have faith Grace, Jesus loves you and God will answer your prayers. There is nothing that you are doing wrong. God our Father always answers prayers though not always in our time. God does not always say yes, but he always answers prayer. When you pray, pray thy kingdom come and thank God that His perfect will be done, you cannot do more than this. Andy |

Cynthia: -These are some of the last sayings of Jesus as recorded in John 19:25b -30 (NRSV). "Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 1. 26When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son. 2. ” 27Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home. 3. 28After this, when Jesus knew that all was now finished, he said (in order to fulfill the scripture), “I am thirsty.” 29A jar full of sour wine was standing there. So they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth. 4. 30When Jesus had received the wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.'
