921 | "Doctrine divides" | Rom 16:17 | Radioman2 | 85969
'"Doctrine divides" has been the hue and cry. Yes, doctrine does divide - that’s its very purpose. It divides us from the Jehovah’s Witnesses and from those . . . who promote a distorted view of Christ and His atonement.' -- Paul R. Belli and G. Richard Fisher AMPLIFIED Romans 16:17 I appeal to you, brethren, to be on your guard concerning those who create dissensions and difficulties and cause divisions, in opposition to the doctrine (the teaching) which you have been taught. [I warn you to turn aside from them, to] avoid them. |

922 | Labels? My church just goes by the Bible | 1 Cor 1:10 | Radioman2 | 81443
"My church just goes by the Bible." That's what they all say. If a group (church, denomination) has no theology (no distinctive doctrines, no statement of faith), how does it define what it believes? How is anyone to know with any certainty what and how that group believes? Virtually all churches claim to go by the Bible. Yet not all have the same interpretation of it. Thus, claims to go by the Bible alone are not adequate to define WHAT a church believes or HOW it interprets and understands the Scriptures. Hence the need for churches to clarify what they beilieve -- what they mean when they say they go by the Bible alone. How do they clarify their position? By a statement of beliefs, theology, doctrine. What is true of the group's definition of its beliefs applies to the individual, as well. |

EdB: The point of my initial post is not how to determine who is right and who is wrong. The point is how to identify what the beliefs of a given church (or individual) are. Grace and peace, Radioman2 |

924 | Which one is cause, which is effect? | 1 Cor 1:10 | Radioman2 | 81524
"In essentials unity, in nonessentials liberty, and in all things charity." Do creeds cause division? Or do they deal with the fact that division already exists? One could argue that pre-existing division is the reason for -- not the result of -- statements of belief. EdB, Reformer Joe, John Reformed and whosoever will join this discussion: What do you think? Division and creeds -- which is cause and which is effect? Consider what John Reformed said in his recent post: "I believe it is important to remember that our creeds arose in answer to those who were attemting to pervert sound doctrine." The intent of the creeds was not to pervert sound doctrine, but rather to preserve it. Radioman2 |

Ed: You write: "If the Bible was written as a guide, which it was, shouldn't the conflicts of interpretation be resolved rather than accepted and lived with?" And how do you propose to resolve conflicts of interpretation? Resolved how and by whom? Should representatives from various churches get together in a room and duke it out verbally? After hearing all the arguments, what man or woman "should" hand down the verdict? Or should the participants agree to abide by the decisions of a committee or majority vote? By what human authority should the verdict be enforced? Grace and peace, Radioman2 |

927 | TO JUDGE | 1 Cor 2:15 | Radioman2 | 78516
When taken as a whole and diligently compared one to another, the Scriptures do NOT prohibit all types of judging. Do not judge??? Anyone? Anything? Ever? A careful reading of the NT and a study of the passages in which the English word "judge" appears may surprise you. You will find that Christians are to judge between dogs and swine. Also, according to the Scriptures (see below), Christians are to judge: all things, those who are inside the church, the world, angels, what is said or taught, and ourselves. So believers are to judge at least seven different things or groups of people. Do not judge and criticize and condemn others, so that you may not be judged and criticized and condemned yourselves. Matthew 7:1 Amplified New Testament "7:1 Judge not. As the context reveals, this does not prohibit all types of judging (v. 16). There is a righteous kind of judgment we are supposed to exercise with careful discernment (John 7:24). Censorious, hypocritical, self-righteous, or other kinds of unfair judgments are forbidden; but in order to fulfill the commandments that follow, it is necessary to discern dogs and swine (v. 6) from one's own brethren (vv. 3-5)" (1997, Word Publishing). Other Scriptural examples of Christians judging are presented below. (The following Scripture quotations are from the NKJV unless otherwise noted. Words in parentheses ( ) or brackets [ ] are from the text of the Amplified New Testament.) 1 Co 2:15 (ANT)But the spiritual man tries all things [he examines, investigates, inquires into questions, and discerns all things], yet is himself to be put on trial and judged by no one . . . 1 Co 5: 12 For what have I to do with judging those also who are outside? Do you not judge (pass disciplinary judgment [passing censuring sentence on them as the facts require]) those who are inside [the church]? 1 Co 6:2 Do you not know that the saints will judge (and govern) the world? And if the world will be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge (try) the smallest matters? 1 Co 6:3 Do you not know that we shall judge angels (and pronounce opinion between right and wrong [for them])? How much more, things that pertain to this life? 1 Co 6:5 I say this to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you, not even one, who will be able to judge ( to decide [the private grievances, disputes, and quarrels]) between his brethren? 1 Co 10: 15 I speak as to wise men; judge (think over and make up your minds) for yourselves [about] what I say. 1 Co 11:31 For if we would judge (searchingly examine) ourselves [detecting our shortcomings and recognizing our own condition], we would not be judged. 1 Co 14:29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge (pay attention and weigh and discern what is said). 2 Co 13:5 (ANT) Examine and test and evaluate your own selves to see whether you are holding to your faith and showing the proper fruits of it. Test and prove yourselves . . . |

928 | Taking ones own life | 1 Cor 3:17 | Radioman2 | 78552
"...Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit" "...And God will destroy anyone who destroys his temple." 1 Corinthians 6:19 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; (NIV) 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 All of you surely know that you are God's temple and that his Spirit lives in you. Together you are God's holy temple, and God will destroy anyone who destroys his temple. (NIV) 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 Do you not discern and understand that you [the whole church at Corinth] are God's temple (His sanctuary), and that God's Spirit has His permanent dwelling in you [to be at home in you, collectively as a church and also individually]? If anyone does hurt to God's temple or corrupts it [with false doctrines] or destroys it, God will do hurt to him and bring him to the corruption of death and destroy him. For the temple of God is holy (sacred to Him) and that [temple] you [the believing church and its individual believers] are. (Ampflified Bible) |

929 | What can we learn from the Pentecostals? | 1 Cor 3:22 | Radioman2 | 96220
UPC broke from other Pentecostal churches 'The United Pentecostal Church International broke from other Pentecostal churches because of its beliefs in Oneness. The UPCI was formed from a merger of two Oneness Pentecostal Churches. This Oneness belief originated from a sermon given by R. E. McAlister in 1913 on Acts 2:38. Men such as Frank J. Ewart and Glenn A. Cook took the Oneness sermon a step further by re-baptizing themselves in the name of Jesus. (Burgess, p.644) As the Oneness doctrine spread throughout the Pentecostal groups, the need for a split between Oneness believers and Trinity believers became evident.' ____________________ (http://religiousmovements.lib.virginia.edu/nrms/UnitPent.html) --Radioman2 |

930 | What can we learn from the Pentecostals? | 1 Cor 3:22 | Radioman2 | 96223
Oneness ministers forced out of AG 'In 1914, Frank Ewert, another well-known Pentecostal, began teaching that the name of the one true God was Jesus. He soon began rebaptizing numerous Pentacostals in Jesus' name only. (Howard Belt, a Pentecostal minister who endorsed Ewert, eventually rebaptized Goss.) Such actions quickly led to a rift between Pentecostals that culminated in forcing all "oneness" ministers out of the Assemblies of God. 'The displaced ministers responded by forming their own organizations which either folded or merged with one another. The formation of the UPC in 1945 made it the largest of the 'Jesus Only' or "Oneness" Pentecostal denominations.' ____________________ http://www.mtio.com/articles/bissar75.htm --Radioman2 |

931 | HOMOSEXUALITY: Fact and Fiction | 1 Cor 6:9 | Radioman2 | 91756
HOMOSEXUALITY: Fact and Fiction (Part One in a Two-Part Series on Homosexuality) by Joseph P. Gudel Christian Research Institute STATEMENT DH055-1 Summary "If homosexuality is neither a normal nor a healthy lifestyle — as I believe this article demonstrates — then the most loving thing we can do is to help homosexuals realize this and offer them our help and encouragement. But millions of people in our society believe that homosexuality is a healthy and acceptable alternative lifestyle. This debate over the acceptance of homosexuality in our culture is one that has been clouded with many misrepresentations and inaccuracies. These misrepresentations include the assertion that ten percent of all Americans are gay (the figure is actually closer to one or two percent), that all competent psychiatrists and psychologists believe homosexuality is a healthy lifestyle (the majority do not), that homosexuals are born that way (most therapists disagree) and cannot change their sexual preference (disproven by numerous accounts where gays have converted to heterosexuality). It is the Christian's task to point out that while homosexuality is a sin, we are all sinners and there is forgiveness and deliverance for all who turn to Jesus Christ. ""People should live and let live!" "To each his own, let them live as they wish." "Let the gays have their freedom." "Whatever makes you happy, live with it." "Comments like these are commonly heard when the topic of homosexuality comes up for discussion. The debate over homosexuality and homosexual rights has steadily grown over the past two decades and will only continue to do so. "In the course of this debate, however, numerous inaccuracies, half-truths, fallacies, and overt propaganda have been disseminated to the public as uncontested truth. It is the purpose of this article to examine these claims and separate fact from fiction. Before anyone can give intelligent and compassionate answers, the questions must be clarified and brought into focus. I believe that when this is done the impartial reader will be able to agree with the analogy made by Dr. James D. Mallory, a psychiatrist and the director of the Atlanta Counseling Center: "A physician would be guilty of malpractice if he didn't warn a diabetic of his condition because he didn't want to hurt his feelings. Simply letting the person continue eating excessive carbohydrates without proper treatment condemns him to a worsening physical condition. The most loving act one can do is point out that an abnormality exists, and offer help. This needs to be done — but not in a spirit of condemnation — with homosexuality." 932 | THAT WHICH IS UNNATURAL: Homosexuality | 1 Cor 6:9 | Radioman2 | 91757
THAT WHICH IS UNNATURAL: Homosexuality in Society, the Church, and Scripture (Part Two in a Two-Part Series on Homosexuality) by Joseph P. Gudel Christian Research Institute STATEMENT DH055-2 Summary "The gay rights movement does not just want the right to privacy and to be left alone. Attempting to promote their cause as a civil rights instead of as a moral issue, they want special legal protection for, and cultural acceptance of, their lifestyle. Even many Christian churches have condoned or are sympathetic to homosexuality, ignoring the Bible's teachings concerning our sexuality. In the Old Testament we find heterosexuality to be proclaimed as God's natural order of creation, a teaching Jesus upheld in the New Testament. Biblically, homosexuality is described as both an "abomination" and "unnatural." God calls us to reject sin, but to love and value all people. "How can anyone dare to speak out against another person's lifestyle? Especially within the church, are not Christians called to be loving and inclusive? Does not the Bible itself tell us that we are to reach out to people instead of being judgmental and self-righteous? "Questions like these come up whenever the Christian or the church takes a stand on a moral issue, especially homosexuality. I realize that it is not "politically correct" to speak critically concerning any person or group. Nonetheless, true Christian love does not ignore immorality and the lives ruined by it, but speaks out in the hope of helping those individuals. "This is particularly true when militant pro-homosexual groups, both within society and the church, have attacked the traditional Judeo-Christian understanding of this important issue. Thus this article is written, not as an attack on homosexuals, but in defense of the biblical teaching on this topic and to help those ensnared in this lifestyle. 935 | Are habitual sinners still Christians? | 1 Cor 6:11 | Radioman2 | 81990
Are HABITUAL sinners still Christians? If they claim to be Christians, yet continue to live in the life of sin, are they still a Christian? [9] No one born of God makes a PRACTICE of sinning, for God's seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God. [10] By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not PRACTICE righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother. 1 John 3:9-10 (ESV) (Emphasis added.) - - - - - - - - - - - - - 1 John 3:6-10 (Amplified) 6 No one who abides in Him [who lives and remains in communion with and in obedience to Him—deliberately, knowingly, and HABITUALLY] commits (practices) sin. No one who [HABITUALLY] sins has either seen or known Him [recognized, perceived, or understood Him, or has had an experiential acquaintance with Him]. 7 Boys (lads), let no one deceive and lead you astray. He who practices righteousness [who is upright, conforming to the divine will in purpose, thought, and action, living a consistently conscientious life] is righteous, even as He is righteous. 8 [But] he who commits sin [who practices evildoing] is of the devil [takes his character from the evil one], for the devil has sinned (violated the divine law) from the beginning. The reason the Son of God was made manifest (visible) was to undo (destroy, loosen, and dissolve) the works the devil [has done]. 9 No one born (begotten) of God [deliberately, knowingly, and HABITUALLY] practices sin, for God’s nature abides in him [His principle of life, the divine sperm, remains permanently within him]; and he cannot practice sinning because he is born (begotten) of God. 10 By this it is made clear who take their nature from God and are His children and who take their nature from the devil and are his children: no one who does not practice righteousness [who does not conform to God’s will in purpose, thought, and action] is of God; neither is anyone who does not love his brother (his fellow believer in Christ). (Emphasis added.) |

Kingdom Interlinear Translation 'In 1969 the Watchtower [Bible and Tract Society] published "The Kingdom Interlinear Translation of the Greek Scriptures," presenting "a literal word-for-word translation" of the Westcott and Hort Greek text, together with the Revised Edition of the "New World Translation of the Christian Creek Scriptures." A preface entitled "By Way of Explanation" says that the literal interlinear English translation is designed to show what the Greek says "without any sectarian religious coloration". The first edition numbered 500,000 copies.' www.holybible.com/resources/Trinitarian/article_67.htm --Radioman2 |

Show us the BOOK, the CHAPTER and the VERSE where the Bible plainly teaches that "if a believer is marryed (sic) to an unbeliever and the unbeliever prevents the believer from worshiping God that they are to seperate." You've given us a book and a chapter, but where is the VERSE that teaches what you say the Bible teaches? When you make an assertion, the burden of proof is on you. When you come up with a Scriptural, reasonable argument for what you believe, I'll be glad to consider it. But I'm still waiting to see your Scriptural evidence. |

939 | What is sanctificatin in 1 Cor. 7:14 ? | 1 Cor 7:14 | Radioman2 | 83528
No, 1 Cor 7:14 does not say that the unbelieving spouse and children are "christian". Here is what the verse SAYS: NASB 1 Corinthians 7:14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified through her believing husband; for otherwise your children are unclean, but now they are holy. Here is what the verse MEANS: AMPLIFIED 1 Corinthians 7:14 For the unbelieving husband is set apart (separated, withdrawn from heathen contamination, and affiliated with the Christian people) by union with his consecrated (set-apart) wife, and the unbelieving wife is set apart and separated through union with her consecrated husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean (unblessed heathen, outside the Christian covenant), but as it is they are prepared for God [pure and clean]. |

940 | re-marriage after divorce | 1 Cor 7:15 | Radioman2 | 88048
"If the marriage is dissolved because of adultery, the innocent party may remarry without jeopardy." NASB Matthew 19:9 "And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery." AMPLIFIED Matthew 19:9 I say to you: whoever dismisses (repudiates, divorces) his wife, except for unchastity, and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a divorced woman commits adultery. 'Jesus was confronted one day by the Pharisees about the question of divorce and remarriage. Please get that! The context of the passage, Matthew 19:3-9, the reason they continued to question Him, was not to learn whether or not a married couple could divorce. They already knew from God's declaration in Deuteronomy 24, the passage to which Jesus appealed, that they could. The Pharisees wanted to trap Jesus on the question of whether or not divorced couples could, according to Scripture, remarry. 'Jesus said, "God's original plan never included divorce, but because your hearts are hard, he permitted it on the grounds of adultery. If the marriage is dissolved because of adultery, the innocent party may remarry without jeopardy."' ____________________ DIVORCE AND THE PASTOR by David Sisler (http://davidsisler.com/9-2.htm) See also ID# 87604. |
