Dear vblaise, Thank you for the question. Perhaps you may find the following of interest. The Six Marys This Is Appendix 100 From The Companion Bible. The name "Mary", when used of the Lord's mother, is always in Greek Mariam (equals sign) the Hebrew Miriam, as in Exodus 15:20. The other five are usually "Maria". 1.Mary the mother of our Lord (Matthew 1:16, etc.). The context never leaves room for any doubt as to her indentity. 2.Mary the mother of James the less and Joses (Matthhew 27:56. Mark 15:40; 16:1. Luke 24:10). She is called "the other Mary" (Matthew 27:61; 28:1), and the wife of Cleopas (John 19:25). 3.Mary the sister of Martha, who anointed the Lord's feet (John 12:3), see Appendix 156 and 158. She is mentioned by name only in Luke 10:39, 42 and John 11:1, 2, 19, 20, 28, 31, 32, 45; and 12:3. 4.Mary Magdalene, of Magdala (Matthew 15:39). She is always to be indentified by this designation (Matthew 27:56. Mark 16:1, 9. Luke 8:2. John 20:18, etc.); there is no authority whatever for identifying her with the unnamed woman of Luke 7:37-50. 5.Mary the mother of John Mark (Acts 12:12). 6.Mary, one of Paul's helpers (Romans 16:6). 42 | Character descript Jacob? | Bible general Archive 1 | Love Fountain | 40748
Dear Rocurwrld, JACOB Character. Jacob appears to have inherited the gentle, quiet, and retiring character of his father along with a selfishness and a prudence that approached cunning. These showed themselves in his reprehensible deception of his father, his dealings with Esau, and the means that he employed to make his bargain with his uncle (Laban) work to his own enrichment. We must remember, however, that he was accustomed to caution and restraint in the presence of a more vigorous brother, that he was secretly stimulated by a belief that God designed for him some superior blessing, that he was compelled to leave home to preserve his life, and that he was obliged to cope with an avaricious and crafty uncle. But "God revived the promise over which he had brooded for sixty years, since he learned it in childhood from his mother. Angels conversed with him. Gradually he felt more and more the watchful care of an ever-present spiritual Father. Face to face he wrestled with the representative of the Almighty. And so, even though the moral consequences of his early transgressions hung about him, and saddened him with a deep knowledge of all the evil of treachery, and domestic envy, and partial judgment, and filial disobedience, yet the increasing revelations of God enlightened the old age of the patriarch; and at last the timid 'supplanter,' the man of subtle devices, waiting for the salvation of Jehovah dies, the 'soldier of God,' uttering the messages of God to his remote posterity" (Smith, Bib. Dict.). (From The New Unger's Bible Dictionary. Originally published by Moody Press of Chicago, Illinois. Copyright (c) 1988.) Hope this helps. Bless you, Love Fountain Matt 5:16-18 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. 17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Dear ddrundle, The Cross and Crucifixion. This Is Appendix 162 From The Companion Bible. In the Greek New Testament two words are used for "the cross" on which the Lord was put to death. 1. The word stauros; which denotes an upright pole or stake, to which the crimminals were nailed for execution. 2. The xulon, which generally denotes a piece of a dead log of wood, or timber, for fuel or for any other purpose. Is is not like dendron, which is used of a living, or green tree, as in Matthew 21:8; Revelation 7:1, 3; 8:7; 9:4, etc. As this latter word xulon is used for the former stauros, it shows us that the meaning of each is exactly the same. The verb stauroõ means to drive stakes.1 Our English word "cross" is the translation of the Latin crux; but the Greek stauros no more means a crux than the word "stick" means a "crutch". Homer uses the word stauros of an ordinary pole or stake, or a single piece of timber.2 And this is the meaning and usage of the word throughout the Greek classics.3 It never means two pieces of timber placed across one another at any angle, but always of one piece alone. Hence the use of the word xulon (No. 2, above) in connection with the manner of our Lord's death, and rendered "tree" in Acts 5:30; 10:39; 13:29. Galatians 3:13. 1 Peter 2:24. This is preserved in our old English name rood, or rod. See the Encycl. Brit., 11th (Camb.) ed., volume 7, page 505d. There is nothing in the Greek of the New Testament even to imply two pieces of timber. The letter chi, , the initial of the word Christ , was originally used for His Name; or . This was superseded by symbols and , and even the first of these had four equal arms. These crosses were used as symbols of the Babylonian sun-god, , and are first seen on a coin of Julius Cæsar, 100 - 44 B.C., and then on a coin struck by Cæsar's heir (Augustus), 20 B.C.4 On the coins of Constantine the most frequent symbol is ; but the same symbol is used without the surrounding circle, and with the four equal arms vertical and horizontal; and this was the symbol specially venerated as the "Solar Wheel". It should be stated that Constantine was a sun-god worshipper, and would not enter the "Church" till some quarter of a century after the legend of his having seen such a cross in the heavens (EUSEBIUS, Vit. Const. I. 37). The evidence is the same as to the pre-Christian (phallic) symbol in Asia, Africa, and Egypt, whether we consult Nineveh by Sir A. H. LAYARD (ii 213), or Manners and Customs of the Ancient Egyptians, by Sir J. GARDNER WILKINSON, iii. pages 24, 26, 43, 44, 46, 52, 82, 136. Dr. SCHLIEMANN gives the same evidence in his Ilios (1880), recording his discoveries on the site of prehistoric Troy. See pages 337, 350, 353, 521, 523. Dr. MAX OHNEFALSCH - RICHTER gives the same evidence from Cyprus; and these are "the oldest extant Phoenician inscriptions"; see his Kypros, the Bible, and Homer : Oriental Civilisation, Art, and Religion in Ancient Times, Plates XIX, XXV, XXVI, XXX, XXXI, XXXII, XL, LVIII, LXIX, etc. The Catacombs in Rome bear the same testimony : "Christ" is never represented there as "hanging on a cross", and the cross itself is only pourtrayed in a veiled and hesitating manner. In the Egyptian churches the cross was a pagan symbol of life, borrowed by the Christians, and interpreted in the pagan manner. See the Encycl. Brit., 11th (Camb.) ed., volume 14, page 273. In his Letter from Rome Dean Burgon says : "I question whether a cross occurs on any Christian monument of the first four centuries". Read the rest of this at www.therain.org. Dear EdB, Please reread what I copied and pasted from another web site again. The words are not mine nor have I taken any position but merely shared something I thought to be of interest regarding the shape of the cross. I see no need for hostility or put downs in any discussion of the Bible and I wish others would do the same so that we can all learn and grow in unity of Christ. Did you go to the website I listed and read the rest of the appendix? I am sorry I could not list the whole apendix in one post for you but I am limited to 5000 characters for some reason. Bless you, Love Fountain Heb 12:1-2 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. Dear EdB, Col 3:12-17 12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; 13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. 14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. Dear jmscott, Please reread what I copied and pasted from another website. The point of the appendix was the shape of the cross which is clearly stated at the end of the appendix which can be read at the website I found this at. Did you go to the website and read the rest of the appendix? Bless you, Love Fountain John 19:16-17 16 Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. Dear ddrundle, Forgive me for the confusion. The original post to you was in referrence to the shape of the cross and something I found of interest which I hoped you would too. I don't know the true shape of the cross because I was not there when Jesus was crucified. Dear jmscott2, Gen 13:14-17 14 And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: 15 For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever. 16 And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered. 17 Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee. KJV Crucifix, Cross General Information The cross is among the oldest and most universal symbols. In preliterate societies it often represented a conjunction of dualities. The horizontal arm was associated with the terrestrial, worldly, feminine, temporal, destructive, and negative, passive, and death, while the vertical arm connoted the celestial, spiritual, masculine, eternal, creative, positive, active, and life. Often symbolic of the four astrological elements of earth, water, fire, and air, a cross was also perceived as the cosmic axis from which radiated the spatial dimensions of height, length, width, and breadth, as well as the directions of north, east, south, and west. The ankh (crux ansata) was an ancient Egyptian T - shaped cross surmounted with a loop. It symbolized the creative energies of the male and female and the essence of life. The simple T - shaped cross is named for the Greek letter tau. It is often referred to as the Old Testament cross because Moses supposedly placed a brazen serpent on a T cross (Num. 21:6 - 9), and according to legend, the Israelites on Passover eve marked their doors with blood - drawn tau crosses to identify themselves as Yahweh's followers. Another name for the T cross is the crux commissa. read the rest on the crucifix/cross at http://www.mb-soft.com/believe/txn/cross.htm Matt 16:24 24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. Dear EdB, No need to apologize to me, I am not your enemy nor do I take offence. Please see that I merely answered the original question from both sides of the coin within this thread. Imagine we are in a court room and the defendant was accused for murder, imagine if the jury only listened to the prosecution and therefore cast a judgement of death without ever hearing the defense and sentence is passed and carried forth. Evidence comes back that the jury condemned and killed an innocent person. If only they had listened to the whole story perhaps the innocent defendant would have been still alive. EdB, Not only do I believe that Jesus carries the sins of the world in His outstretched arms nailed to the cross, but I also believe that the world continues to hammer the nails into His outstretched arms and legs daily, to this very day and onward until the time of His return to put the world back into the understanding of love and equality through unity. Bless you, Love Fountain Deut 4:20-24 20 But the LORD hath taken you, and brought you forth out of the iron furnace, even out of Egypt, to be unto him a people of inheritance, as ye are this day. 21 Furthermore the LORD was angry with me for your sakes, and sware that I should not go over Jordan, and that I should not go in unto that good land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance: 22 But I must die in this land, I must not go over Jordan: but ye shall go over, and possess that good land. 23 Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and make you a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, which the LORD thy God hath forbidden thee. 24 For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God. Dear angel1, I have never been called a witch before, especially by a self proclaimed witch who admits to making statues of sorcerers who invited evil spirits into her own house. Since I am not a witch nor have I ever studied or practiced any type of witchcraft I am amased at the boldness you display in your accusation towards me. I thank God for you being a recovering witch and I give to Him the painful memories you still have against the evil that obviously seduced you into the lies and darkness of the occult. May you read the Bible and be cleansed and healed by the words of life. If you read this thread you will find that I believe Jesus was crucified on a cross not a stake as you seem to believe. Sexualization of the crucifixion is perverted and shows certain misunderstanding of the context of what the cross is for and I have not supported sexualization merely for exposing the belief that others have and have knowwhere given my approval or support. You and I will be judged by judgement we have made against others, that is why you are to have no judgement against others. Matt 5:23-24 23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; 24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. KJV Please explain how you are not yourself ensnared if you are still accusing others? Bless you, Love Fountain Matt 15:16-20 16 And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding? 17 Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? 18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. 19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: 20 These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man. Dear angel1, Please don't forget the Love. Matt 22:37-39 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. KJV I pray thay the Father shows you that standing with the Lord Jesus is not condemnation of fellow brothers and sisters in the body of Christ looking for words of hurt and false accusation. Jesus is not an accuser of those who seek His will and a student of the Bible knows where the spirit of accusation comes from. In the name of Jesus I believe you need a hug so the evil that you have been exposed to can run back where it came from and leave you alone to drink of the water of life, The Word of God and be cleansed. Bless you, Love Fountain Eph 5:26-32 26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. 28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. 29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: 30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. 31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. 32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 58 | Please disprove rapture theory!? | Bible general Archive 1 | Love Fountain | 41614
Dear conlan4k, You ask,"Can someone show me where I can prove that we will not fly up into the sky ?" Please read the following verse, Ezek 13:20 20 Wherefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against your pillows, wherewith ye there hunt the souls to make them fly, and I will tear them from your arms, and will let the souls go, even the souls that ye hunt to make them fly. KJV Some people believe the above verse tells that God is not happy with those who teach people to fly to save their souls and that He will take back the souls. Unfortunately some will fly by their own choice but rest assured they will be taken back as God states in the above verse. You also ask,"I would like to know where I can find the scripture that says we will be brought before satan and we need to let the holy spirit speak through us." Scripture in the following verses doesn't directly say satan, but who is the one deceiving the whole world, are they not the ones(the ones deceived) who receive a testimony from the Holy Spirit through people chosen by God. Matt 10:17-20 17 But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues; 18 And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles. 19 But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. 20 For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you. KJV Mark 13:9-11 9 But take heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten: and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them. 10 And the gospel must first be published among all nations. 11 But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost. KJV There is definitely going to be a testimony in which the Holy Spirit is going to talk through people based on the above verses. I believe Christians are being weakened by believing they will not have to be here on earth through the tribulation. Bless you, Love Fountain Rev 9:4 4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads. 59 | Please disprove rapture theory!? | Bible general Archive 1 | Love Fountain | 41658
Dear kalos, Yes, I believe Eze 13:20 has to do with the rapture, endtime prophecy, aviation and space flight, but superman is questionable, but redemption from depravity is not. One thing is certain throughout the Bible, though depraved through lack of definite agreement, all believers have the victory over death. The very gift of freewill allows each of us to choose what we believe and through the gift of life we are allowed to decide for ourselves the path we shall take. I agree, from the beginning to the end, throughout the context of the Bible we must read line upon line, verse upon verse and chapter by chapter to understand what is written. Notice Eze 13:17 says,"prophesy against the daughters....who prophesy" because they prophesy out of their own hearts and minds just like the lady, Margaret McDonald, who I believe truly began the teaching of the rapture less than two hundred years ago when she was sick, she had a false vision just like the Bible talks about in Eze 13:23. This false vision has spawned many different variations of interpretation of the body of Christ gathering back to Christ Himself. In Eze 13:18 God tells us of these women that sew pillows to all armholes, they sew coverings, these coverings are the deceptive veils on the heads of the souls being hunted and by the veiling of God's outstretched hands they deceive by lying(Eze 13:19) falsely promising life to those who believe and take heed to their lies. In Eze 13:19 it says they slay people that should live and give a guarantee of life to those who should not. This sounds like a set up to me. Jesus says if they tell you I am here or there do not go and do not beleive them. Something angelic shows up and says I am an angel sent to take you to Jesus and give you life, are you going to go? I hope not because as Jesus says "have ye not read?" Please tell me who is the one throughout the whole context of the Bible that hunts souls? Bless you, Love Fountain Ezek 13:17-23 17 "Likewise, son of man, set your face against the daughters of your people, who prophesy out of their own heart; prophesy against them, 18 and say, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "Woe to the women who sew magic charms on their sleeves and make veils for the heads of people of every height to hunt souls! Will you hunt the souls of My people, and keep yourselves alive? 19 And will you profane Me among My people for handfuls of barley and for pieces of bread, killing people who should not die, and keeping people alive who should not live, by your lying to My people who listen to lies?" 20'Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: "Behold, I am against your magic charms by which you hunt souls there like birds. I will tear them from your arms, and let the souls go, the souls you hunt like birds. 21 I will also tear off your veils and deliver My people out of your hand, and they shall no longer be as prey in your hand. Then you shall know that I am the LORD." ' 22 Because with lies you have made the heart of the righteous sad, whom I have not made sad; and you have strengthened the hands of the wicked, so that he does not turn from his wicked way to save his life. 23 Therefore you shall no longer envision futility nor practice divination; for I will deliver My people out of your hand, and you shall know that I am the LORD." 60 | how much is a legion? | Bible general Archive 1 | Love Fountain | 41774
Dear jenbrock, The following three sources talk about legion. I hope this helps and sorry for any duplicates. LEGION LEGION The principal unit of the Roman army, consisting of 3,000 to 6,000 infantry troops and 100 to 200 cavalrymen. The New Testament does not use the word legion in its strict military sense, but in a general sense to express a large number. When Jesus healed a man possessed by unclean spirits or demons, He asked the man his name. He replied, "My name is Legion; for we are many" (Mark 5:9). The man was inhabited by many demons. (from Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary, Copyright (c)1986, Thomas Nelson Publishers) LEGION LEGION The largest division of the Roman army, of which it was, in order and armament, the miniature; 6,000 foot, with a body of horse. Matt 26:53, "thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He shall presently give Me more than twelve legions of angels," against this band from the Roman "legion"; not merely My twelve apostles, but twelve "legions," and these "angels?" (compare 2 Kings 6:17; Dan 7:10.) In Mark 5:9 the demon-possessed says, "my name is legion, for we are many," "because many demons (Greek) were entered into him." (from Fausset's Bible Dictionary, Electronic Database Copyright (c)1998 by Biblesoft) LEGION LEGION. A main division of the Roman army, nearly equivalent to our regiment. It comprised a much larger number of men, running from 3,000 men to about 6,000 at the time of Christ. See Army. Figurative. The word legion came to mean a great number or multitude, for example, of angels (Matt 26:53) and of evil spirits (Mark 5:9,15). BIBLIOGRAPHY: H. M. D. Parker, The Roman Legions (1928).
