281 | Questions about blessing others - take 2 | Matt 10:13 | Jesusman | 29103
Hello All, I'm a friend of Art from the other forum that he spoke of. The other forum we go to has become a battle ground of vague apologetics, foolish criticism, and a hot-bed of anti-christian feelings. Art, myself, and one or two others are all that is left of the strong christian core that once witnessed on that forum. At one time, we were a congregation that met online to share, witness, teach, and worship together. Now, we are a few who stay there in hopes that the Holy Spirit will still work through our words on the hearts and souls of those who attack us. We have two atheists, an agnostic, a daoist or two, and several who claim no religion at all for they believe that all religions ultimately lead to God and heaven. The peculiar part is that this is called a "christian" forum, dedicated to "Christians". It isn't as large as this one, and is open to various related Christian topics. Lately, Art and myself have been hit upon hard by many of the others there, especially by the atheists and agnostics. We are both very strong in our beliefs and are rather persistant in what we hold to be true. I cannot say anything more about Art's feelings, but I have been feeling as though I should pack-up and leave them to their own devices. I am, quite frankly, sick and tired of all the oppostition and conflict that I face there. Anyway, I didn't mean to get on my soapbox. However, I did want to provide a little background information concerning what Art was talking about and asking. Jesus Loves You! Jesusman |

283 | Did Jonah die in the belly of the fish? | Matt 12:40 | Jesusman | 192298
Something that might help clarify and edify what has already been said here. A former doctrine professor of mine had a newspaper clipping dated back in the 50's if memory serves, from a mediteranean newspaper that speaks of a fishing boat being tossed around and that a sailor fell overboard. He was swallowed by a whale, and believed dead. The fishing boat found the whale 4 days later and caught it. When they cut it open, they found their crew mate inside the whale still alive. His skin was very pale and sickly from the stomach acids eating away at his skin. It took him a few days to recover. This story gave credibility to the Book of Jonah that such an event really could have happened. |

284 | Did Jonah die in the belly of the fish? | Matt 12:40 | Jesusman | 192308
No offense, Doc, but tell this to an athiest who believes that the Book of Jonah is a fairy tale then tell me the response. For a long time, the only credibility the Book of Jonah had to being true was the comments made by Jesus. The article I mentioned, plus a couple of archeological discoveries in recent decades sheds new light on the Book of Jonah. Need to remember, Doc, we aren't only to teach the saved but make disciples of the unsaved. To do that, you will need to prove that the Bible is trustworthy and credible. The Best way to do that is through it's Historical claims. The old excuse "cause I said so" ... or "cause God says so" doesn't work with everyone. Jesusman. |

285 | Did Jonah die in the belly of the fish? | Matt 12:40 | Jesusman | 192315
Again .. no offense, Doc, but the Bible isn't a Calvinist. We are still to teach and teach truthfully to the unsaved. If persuasion played no part, and that redemption is purely from God, then why are we commanded to teach the unsaved?The precident set by the Apostles and the Early church fathers are to support your claims with facts. Dr. Luke used Roman time tables and references in his writings so his readers can know he was speaking truth and not trying to blow sunshine up their noses. Paul applauded the Bereans for testing every word he said. Even Jesus referred to the Old Testament writings to support his then believed to be outrageous claims of being the Messiah. When it comes to speaking with a person who is unsaved and prolly hasn't darkened the doorway of a church except at funerals and weddings, then you can't approach them successfully the same way you do an elder of the church. Look at Paul's sermon on Mar's Hill. Did he pull out the Torah and speak to them about the Law? Did he throw a praise session together? No .. he used their own beliefs and idols to proclaim the message. He got onto their level without compromising his own. That is what I am talking about. By supporting my religious claims with something that can be researched, I am giving those who are unsaved the means and opportunity to find out for themselves that what I'm telling them is not a bunch of fairy tails or good luck sayings. 286 | Did Jonah die in the belly of the fish? | Matt 12:40 | Jesusman | 192321
Actually, I read the story first hand, so it's not a "fantastic story". Also, there are accounts of Sperm Whales growing large enough to be able to hold a man inside. Also given the hebrew word could also mean fish, there are accounts of sharks being found with a whole horse inside. There is evidence there, if you are willing to actually look. As for supporting religious claims with supportable and researchable fact, tell me this. Who would you be more willing to listen to and take seriously? A person who talks of ghosts, spirits, drinking blood, eating flesh, and believing in something you can't see, hear, taste, smell, or feel? Or someone who talks to you about events in history and mentions the proofs and is willing and able to back up every single claim with historical evidence? Between the two .. I would dismiss the first person as a street corner shaman that needs to see a doctor and talk to the later. Jesusman |

287 | Did Jonah die in the belly of the fish? | Matt 12:40 | Jesusman | 192333
I am well aware of this event, and the controversy behind it. The article I read mentioned it taking place in the mediteranean sea. No matter.
288 | Did Jonah die in the belly of the fish? | Matt 12:40 | Jesusman | 192335
Ok .. in what way was I unclear in that I was trying to add a little extra-biblical support to what was taking place in the Bible? Did I ever say I was trying to replace the Gospel? No! Is it some huge crime or sin against the Ten Commandments to say "hey .. this not only happened here, but something very similar happened in recent history." Or to say "Hey .. this really did happen cause proof was found that it did happen"? Is the concept of apologetics totally foreign here?? |

289 | Is Catholic considered false religion? | Matt 15:6 | Jesusman | 71742
Hello, I'm not sure if this has been pointed out or not. I have only read a handful of the posts on this thread. However, I do regard the Catholic church as falsely teaching the word of God. Allow me to demonstrate. The Catholic Church teaches that Mary was born of a miraculous birth, similar to Jesus. Because of this, Mary was the Chosen of God to bring forth the Christ. It is also through this that Mary and the Birth of the Christ that enabled Mary to be sinless. To support this view, the Catholic Church uses Tradition as equal authority to the Bible. However, there is a clear contradiction between Tradition and Scripture, as I will point out. The Prophet Micah was one of the First prophets to Prophecy the Birth of the Christ. As you read his book, a clear timeline can be formed from the Prophecies. His book begins with the Prophecies of the babylonian exhile and the return. In CHapter 3, Micah begins to speak of a period of Darkness in which God will not speak or act. Chapter 4 speaks of wars and natural disasters. In Chapter 5, this dark period is broken by the coming of the Messiah. Now, let's look at Malachi. Malachi was the last Prophet of the Old Testament age. His last words focused on the Return of Elijah, who will return just prior to the Coming of the Christ. Jesus confirms that John the Baptist is Elijah returned. So, where's the contradiction you ask? The period of Darkness is the 400 years between the testaments. This is the same period in which the Apocryphal Books have been proven to have been written. The Apocrypha cannot be canon if God did not inspire them. If God did inspire them, then God broke his word and is a liar. Also, If Mary was born of a miraculous birth as the Catholic Church claims, prior to the coming of John the Baptist, then that makes her Elijah and John the Baptist as the Christ. Either that or Mary is elijah, Jesus is the Christ, and John the Baptist is a nobody. However, Jesus is also a liar or mistaken because he proclaimed John the Baptist as Elijah. Do you see the contradiction? For this to make sense, something needs to be placed at lower authority: Tradition or Scripture. If Tradition, then the Catholic church must review every doctrine they have that is based partially or wholly upon tradition. If Scripture, then the Catholic Church is a false denomination, because they would not hold the Word of God as supreme authority. Jesus Loves You! Jesusman |

290 | Why was the man speechless? | Matt 22:11 | Jesusman | 29193
Hello Ed, This is the parable of the Wedding feast, and one of my favorites. The parable begins with the calling of those who were initially invited to the feast. However, they would not come. When asked a second time, they revolted, killed the servants, and made the king angry. As a result, the king punished them by burning the city and their homes, and killing the murderers. After that, he sent the servents to the highways to invite guests and travellers. Now, It was customary in those days to give a travller time to prepare after coming from a journey. It was also customary to have the guest change into their wedding clothes in preparation. If they did not have the proper clothes, they would have been provided with some. Here was a man who was not properly dressed. This was a sign of disrespect to the king. All the man wanted was the food, but did not want to do his part to get it. As a result, the guest was evicted from the premisses. So, while he was brought in, he was no better than the ones who where initially invited, and he was punished Jesusman |

There could be any number of reasons. Maybe he was awestruck by the amount of food there was? The text really doesn't clarify. Jesusman |

292 | "ONCE SAVED ALWAYS SAVED"!!! | Matt 22:37 | Jesusman | 30130
Hello, I believe in "Once saved always saved" for a few good reasons. First is in Romans 8:12-17 This passage is referring to adoption. As believers, we are adopted as a result of our faith in Jesus Christ. Upon salvation, the believer is given a "spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, Abba! Father!" I recently did a study on the New Testament view of adoption. During NT times, an adoption was such a contract that could not be broken nor nullified by any person. Not even the courts could break an adoption. The People involved could not nullify the adoption in any way. It was permanent. Also, an adopted child could not, in any capacity, be denied his/her inheritance. In fact, adoption was used on those who were declared legitimate birth children. This is the meaning that can be applied here in this passage. Once we are adopted, we cannot be unadopted in any way. We cannot deny it. We cannot give it back. Nothing. We are adopted, permanently. The next passage is in 1 Peter 1:3-7. In this passage, Peter declares that our inheritance is "imperishable, undefiled, and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, ...". In the following verse, he continues by saying that you "who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time." It is clear in this passage that our inheritance cannot be done away with. Then there is the parable of the prodigal son. Many who do not hold to eternal security use the father's statement "my son who was once dead, but now is alive ..." as proof for conditional security, or the idea that a Christian can lose his salvation. However, when you look closely at the parable, the son's status in the father's eyes and in the family never changes. The son is always the son. There is never a time when he is not the son. What changes is his residence, not his status. The son is always the son. Those three passages, and many others, lead me to believe that a Christian cannot lose his/her salvation. In fact, I am quicker to say that the person is either back-slidden, or was not truly saved to begin with than to say that they lost their salvation. Also, saying that a person lost their salvation implies two things. First, God is not all powerful. Second, that Salvation is by works. Both go against Scripture. Ephesians records, "By grace are you saved, through faith, not of youselves. It is the gift of God. Not of works lest anyman should boast." Indeed God does begin the process of Salvation, but keeping it is up to us, according to Conditional Security. As a result, Salvation is out of God's hands and is placed into our own hands. If we are not able to save ourselves, how on God's green earth are we going to keep it on our own? It cannot be done. Therefore, Salvation is by God alone, and we are kept in Salvation by God alone. 293 | "ONCE SAVED ALWAYS SAVED"!!! | Matt 22:37 | Jesusman | 30131
So, if a Christian can lose his salvation, then that means that God isn't as powerful as he claims, that it is up to us to save ourselves, and that we have bragging rights if we make it to heaven. Therefore, we are just as good on our own as we are with God. After all, God isn't powerful enough. Correct? Jesusman |

294 | "ONCE SAVED ALWAYS SAVED"!!! | Matt 22:37 | Jesusman | 30428
Johnny, You missed my point. If we are to remain in Salvation, as you seem to be saying, then we must work for it. However, Scripture clearly teaches that Salvation is a gift from God and that we do not work for it. Jesusman |
||||||
295 | "ONCE SAVED ALWAYS SAVED"!!! | Matt 22:37 | Jesusman | 30455
For by Grace are you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of Works, that no one should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9 YOU DON'T WORK FOR YOUR SALVATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jesusman |
||||||
296 | "ONCE SAVED ALWAYS SAVED"!!! | Matt 22:37 | Jesusman | 30466
Let me get this straight. You're saying that our good works keep us in Salvation. Correct? However, Our Good Works are not to keep us saved, but to prove to others that we are saved. "By their fruits you shall know them, ..." Matthew 7:20. "For it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure." Philippeans 2:13 Paul says in the following verse that you referenced that it is God who is working within you. Also, our works not only prove our salvation, but it is the logical cource of action for those dead to Sins, look at Romans 6:1-23. It clearly teaches that we are dead to sin, and that as new creatures in Christ, we are to act as Christ did. In fact, Romans 6 proves fully that works don't save you, that grace through faith saves you, and that works are the natural course of Action for the saved. Jesusman |

297 | choking on a gnat | Matt 23:24 | Jesusman | 104015
This is the chapter where Jesus rebukes the Pharisees and Scribes. Actually, "rebukes" is putting it mildly. Each verse is an outlandish example of things done by them. In this particular section, Jesus is using opposites. In the preveious verse, Jesus essentially says that they majored in the minor aspects of the law, while ignoring the major and more important aspects of the law. Jesusman |

298 | Unleavened Bread Prior to Passover? | Matt 26:17 | Jesusman | 32097
Hello, In Exodus at the first passover, it states that the feast of the unleavened bread begins on the evening of the fourteenth day and continues until the twenty-first day. So, what you have is on the fourteenth day, Passover, followed by the feast of the unleavened bread for seven days. On the fourteenth and twenty-first days, you have holy days in which no work is to be done. So, you have the Last supper on the 14th, Jesus dying and being buried on the 20th, resting on the 21st due to Passover week, resting on the 22nd due to Sabbath, and raising on the 23rd, which was a Sunday. Confused yet? :-) Jesusman |

299 | Unleavened Bread Prior to Passover? | Matt 26:17 | Jesusman | 32099
I have a correction to make about the timeline I gave. Instead of resting on the 21st and the 22nd, he would've only rested on the 21st due to it being the last day of the Passover and due to it being Sabbath, then rested on part of the 22nd, and raising on the morning of the 22nd. I got my days mixed up. Sorry. Jesusman |

300 | Does Matt 28: 18 infer to do what Europe | Matt 28:18 | Jesusman | 192169
Greetings, I'm not sure if this is what you are wanting, but I will provide the insight I can. One difference between the European settlers and Jesus Christ is divine authority. In this passage, Jesus is not only saying that he has the authority to do anything he feels should be done, but that he has the capability also. The word here for "power" is the same word that we get our word "dynomite" from. Meaning the raw capacity to be able to accomplish a task. Jesus is claiming that God the Father granted the authority and the ability, not just on earth .. but basically everywhere. Now .. there is a parrallel passage in Acts chapter 1:1-8. There, Jesus is giving the Disciples the "power" or ability to accomplish what he wants them to. In this case it's to spread the teachings of Jesus around the world. Now .. notice he didn't give them any "authority" .. just "power". He told them what to do. Go and teach, and he gave them the ability to do so. Now .. with the European settlers, my american history is a little weak back that far, but I do know how harshly the native americans were treated. Much of it done in "the Name of God". This is a perversion of what Jesus commanded. No where does he say for his followers to go and "beat the daylights out of everyone and shove the gospel down their throats." He says to go .. teach .. and baptize. There is no hostile intent in the commands of Jesus in these passages. Such hostile actions in "the name of God" are the perversions of the true intent of the Word, and done so by selfish peoples, not true christians. History is filled with such examples. Jesus Loves You! Jesusman |
