22 | Why so many Bibles? | Bible general Archive 3 | Huron | 166775
Thanks! I don't know if I agree with the "wooden" label or not. Even though I use the NASB every day, and have done all of my memory work from it, I have to admit that it leaves me tongue-tied when I read it out loud. For "publik" reading I love the sound of the KJV:) I'm sure that many of us on this site would agree that it is helpful to have several translations handy. KJV, NKJV, RSV, ESV, NASB, NASBU, and NIV are all excellant translations. |

23 | Why the NKJV over the NASB ? | Bible general Archive 3 | Huron | 189792
The NASB has always been a bit of a "sholars" Bible. Well, maybe not quite, but it's been my experience that those who really use their Bible and are really concerned with real (not perceived) accuracy go with the NASB. The NASB does have it's quirks. Try to read from one aloud! It's clumsy. If you try to follow along with a group you will also find that word order is different from other translations. I like and use the NKJV also, but by following the majority text it is prone to many of the inaccuracies of the TR derived KJV. Getting back to your question, there is a concern about the newer translations being a "change" from the KJV. Secondly, I think that the NKJV is advertised more than the NASB. Huron |

24 | NIV bible | Bible general Archive 2 | Huron | 92863
I would buy one. I've got three study Bibles at home: King James, NIV, and NASB. The NASB is my favorite. To me, the King James flows the best. NASB seems the most accurate. NIV is accurate, but it is harder to memorize verses in that version than in the other two. |

25 | Receiving Christ - Works? | Bible general Archive 2 | Huron | 92945
I need a little help with a question: My brother (great guy) tells me that "decision theology" is wrong. I disagree because I believe that everyone must make a decision about Christ. He states that a decision would be "works", and that we are spiritually dead before the renewing/rebirth therefore we can't do anything ourselves to effect salvation. I realize that we are saved by grace through faith per Ephesians 2.8,9 and Titus 3.5, but there are MANY verses in the Bible like John 1.12, 3.16, and Revelation 3.20 that talk of "receiving Christ." I tried to tell him that he is right, it's not by works BUT making a decision (or accepting Christ) is not works. Kind of like accepting a rope tossed out to you if you were drowning. The drowning person is NOT saving himself, BUT must receive the rope. He keeps telling me that decision theology "cheapens God's grace". Who is right? I'm seriously outclassed in this debate because he's got Greek lexicons/dictionaries/commontaries ad naseum, and I'm a Bible only type guy. Thanks! |

26 | works law? | Bible general Archive 2 | Huron | 92981
Emmaus, Good stuff. Anything on how receiving is not "works". I don't see how anyone can compare receiving or believing with the works of the Law, but people do.... |

I've been out of town. Thanks for the answer. It gives me something to research.
28 | Receiving Christ - Works? | Bible general Archive 2 | Huron | 95385
I know that the use of lexicons has nothing to do with who is right, I was merely pointing it out that he has more resources at his disposal than I do. I'm still mulling this over. |

29 | Prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32) who is he? | Bible general Archive 2 | Huron | 96236
In Luke 15:11-32 who are the two sons? I'm convinced that the story illustrates a sinner coming to repentance. I want to be sure that I haven't overlooked any possibilities. Is it possible the two sons represent the Jews and the Gentiles? Any other possibilities that I am overlooking? Thanks and Regards, Huron |

30 | "decision theology" I think I see it now | Bible general Archive 2 | Huron | 96350
I think I see the problem now. When people hear the term "decisionism" or "decisionist" they assume that you believe in the mass produced, walk down to the alter and repeat this prayer procedural type "decision" for Christ. Am I right? |

31 | What is the most accurate version? | Bible general Archive 2 | Huron | 104523
I've read the NT over twenty times, and the Bible cover to cover about five times. I've used RSV, NIV, KJV, and NASB. I think that generally speaking NASB is the most accurate. NIV is very readable, but borders on an interpretation. Huron |

32 | NIV bible | Bible general Archive 2 | Huron | 110307
The account in Acts that you are mentioning does not exist in the oldest, most reliable manuscripts. The KJV is good - I have one and use it, BUT it was written over 400 years ago. We have found many manuscripts since then that are much older than those used in the TR, which is what the KJV is based on. If you would like an in depth discussion on this issue, read Metzger's Commentary on the Greek New Testament.
33 | NIV bible | Bible general Archive 2 | Huron | 110363
Tim, Thank you! The transmission/preservation of the NT is something that has been catching my attention more and more lately. I love the KJV for it's flow and sound, but if I had to pick one all around Bible translation it would be the NASB. As I'm sure you noticed, I still have more questions than answers! Regards, Huron |

34 | NIV bible | Bible general Archive 2 | Huron | 110372
8788, It is doubtful that the verse in question was ever written by John. If it had been in the earlier manuscripts chances are it would have been quoted by the early church fathers to defend the Trinity. It was likely added by a well meaning scribe! Huron |

KJ, How the NT has been preserved and transmitted to us is a fascinating story. I wholeheartedly recommend Metzger's book - although he mainly deals with differences in the manuscripts. There was another book "The New Testament Documents, Are They Reliable?" by F.F. Bruce that I was looking at in Barnes and Noble yesterday. Here is a quick look at it http://www.discerningreader.com/newtesdocffb.html Huron |

36 | Explain Romans 8:29 | Bible general Archive 2 | Huron | 110610
Answering your question regarding what should be the end in mind for believers, may I suggest Romans 12:1,2? "Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. Rom 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect" Hope this helps! 40 | book recommendation | Bible general Archive 2 | Huron | 111329
I'd like to recommend a book if I may. Recently read Metzger's The New Testament: It's Transmission, Corruption, Restoration, Excellant book! If you want to understand how documents were copied, and how the NT got from the original manuscripts to today, read this book. Regards, Huron |
