4 | a demoniac or a person whose bodt is pos | Bible general Archive 4 | HOTH | 231599
Your question is redundant. A "demoniac" IS a person who is possessed by an evil spirit. The one word answer is "demoniac." It means "to be under the power of a demon" or "demon possessed." It occurs, in one form or another, seven times in Matthew, four times in Mark, once in Luke and once in John. Hoth |

5 | How many days was Jesus dead? | Bible general Archive 4 | HOTH | 231842
Hi CDBJ, I think you are on the right track, but you have not gone far enough. Your explanation does not provide for: Mark 16:1 – When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might come and anoint Him. Luke 23:56 – Then they returned and prepared spices and perfumes. And on the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment. Yes, the women bought the spices after the Sabbath was over, but prepared them before the Sabbath! How can this be except that they bought the spices on Friday, after the Thursday High Sabbath, and prepared them the same day. They then rested on the Saturday Sabbath! I have tried to determine what day of the week that the 14th of Nissan fell on and found it impossible to do so. Hoth |

7 | Aren't Isaelites and Jews, one people? | Bible general Archive 4 | HOTH | 236532
Hi BarbW3, Are Israelites, Jews, and Gentiles, 3 different entities / groups?? The terms “Hebrew”, “Israelite” and “Jew” have different meanings within the context of the Bible. Hebrews are those subject to God’s covenant with Abraham, i.e. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Jacob’s descendants. It does not include Abraham’s other children or Esau. An Israelite is a descendant of Jacob/Israel and his twelve sons. An Israelite would be any member of the twelve tribes of Israel. A Jew, as interpreted by the Bible, is a Hebrew citizen of the southern kingdom Judea or one of their descendants. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob were not Jews. There were no “Jews” until the establishment of Judea. The ten tribes of the northern kingdom of Israel were not Jews. The first use of the term “Jews” in the Bible is found in II Kings 16:6. King Rezin of Syria recaptured Elath from the Jews. King Rezin had waged war against Jerusalem with his ally, King Pekah of Israel! So here you see Israel at war against the Jews! When the kingdoms were divided, God gave to Judah the tribe of Benjamin, so “that David My servant may always have a light before Me in Jerusalem . . .” Also, most of the tribe of Levi, the priests, moved to Judea because they were replaced by the King of Israel in their priestly duties. These individuals were also referred to as “Jews” because they lived in Judea. Israel was carried off into captivity by the Assyrians and fell below the historian’s radar. Later, Judea (the Jews) was carried off into captivity to Babylon. They returned 70 years later and rebuilt the temple. Their descendants are recognized today as Jews. Thus, modern Israel is Ancient Judea, not Ancient Israel. Therefore the words Hebrew, Israelite, and Jew, though related, differ in scope: Hebrew, is the most comprehensive of the three, and includes all who are described by the words Israelite and Jew; the word Israelite designates one descended from Jacob; and, the word Jew a citizen of Judea, usually of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin and their descendants. Hi EdB, Can you give me a scripture for that? Where a Gentile was converted to Judaism and then was called a Jew. It is not my definition, but as the word Jew is used in the scriptures. However, if I missed that scripture, I will gladly stand corrected. Thanks, Hoth |

10 | When do we go to heaven? | NT general | HOTH | 230876
Hi onthebrink247, Compare: Acts 2: 29 Brethren, I may confidently say to you regarding the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. And Acts 2: 32-35 This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses. 33 Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear. 34 For it was not David who ascended into heaven, but he himself says: ‘THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, “SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, 35 UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET.”’ Compare: Matthew 5:12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. And Revelation 22:12 “Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done. It would appear from these scriptures that no one has ascended into heaven, except for Jesus. That our reward is in heaven, but Jesus will bring His reward with Him when He returns. Hoth |

12 | how old would Adam and Eve be today? | Genesis | HOTH | 230573
If Adam and Eve were still alive, the short answer would be about 6 six thousand years old. A precise answer is not possible, even the birth date given to Jesus Christ is off by at least 4 years and a few months. Hoth |

13 | Who was Abraham's heir before Eliezer? | Genesis | HOTH | 232212
You have asked 3 separate questions, so I will answer each separately. 1. Was Abram resentful due to losing Lot? I’m not sure what you mean by losing Lot, I assume you are referring to when they separated. There is nothing in scripture to indicate that Abram was resentful. 2. Could this indicate that Abram had adopted his nephew when his brother died? There is no reason to believe that Abram adopted Lot. We do not know how old Lot was when his father died. If Lot were adopted, then would he not have then become Abram’s heir, which he was not? 3. Was Lot receiving an inheritance of some kind? No. Lot did not chose Sodom, but all the valley of the Jordan, he settled in the cities of the Valley and moved his tents as far as the city of Sodom. Lot settled in the area east of the Jordan, out of the promised land in the area later known as “the Land of Moab” between the Arnon and the Jabbok. This area became part of the nation of Moab (Lot’s descendants), but this northern area of Moab was later conquered by the Amorites. The Amorites were in turn conquered by Israel and “the land of Moab” was settled by the tribes of Gad and Reuben. Hoth |

14 | how many brothers did joesph have | Genesis | HOTH | 234320
Hi Cindyi, Joseph had ten half-brothers: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, and Zebulun; and one full-brother: Benjamin. In addition to these, Joseph had a half-sister, Dinah. See Genesis 29:32 – 35:18 for details. Hoth |

15 | Were Noah's sons triplets | Genesis | HOTH | 236126
They were not triplets since Noah's first son was born when he was 500 years old and Shem was not born until Noah was 503 years old. Genesis 5:32 states that Noah was 500 years old when he became the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth. This would indicate that Noah's eldest son was born when Noah was 500 years old. The flood came when Noah was 600 years old (Genesis 7:11) and lasted for a year (Genesis 8:13-14). Shem was 100 years old 2 years after the flood when Noah would have been 603 years old (Genesis 11:10). Hoth |

17 | When was Joseph sold into slavery? | Genesis | HOTH | 238421
Hi Doc, Luke 1:3 states, "it seemed fitting for me as well, having investigated everything carefully from the beginning, to write it out for you in consecutive order, most excellent Theophilus; There is no similar admonition in the book of Genesis. The reason I asked the question is this: In Chapter 34 Simeon and Levi killed all the males in Shechem and the other brothers looted the city. Jacob was afraid that the other inhabitants of the land would attack his household and it would be destroyed. In response at the beginning of Chapter 35 God told Jacob to go to Bethel. I found it odd that in Chapter 37:13 "Israel said to Joseph, 'Are not your brothers pasturing the flock in Shechem? Come, and I will send you to them.' And he (Joseph) said to him, 'I will go.'" From this is appears the events in Chapter 37 might have happened before the events of Chapter 34. Are there other indications that this is correct or incorrect? Did Joseph participate in the looting of Shechem? Did Rachel die before Joseph was sold into Slavery? Did Joseph know of his brother Benjamin? What is the sequence of these horrible events in Jacob's life? Thanks, Hoth |

18 | Creation days | Genesis | HOTH | 239238
Hi DTS, You ask an excellent question and are right to wonder about these seeming contradictions. All of these verses must be (and are) in harmony. For this purpose, you must let the bible interpret the bible. The first thing to understand is that “in the beginning” is not on the first day. Notice the earth existed before God said, “Let there be light.” That light was the start of the first day and the start of this age, which will end when Christ returns. (John 1: 1-3) God and the Word (Jesus) were “in the beginning” and all things were made through Jesus. If “in the beginning” is the same as the first day of creation, then NOTHING had been created prior to that day. Yet, when the cornerstone of the earth was laid, “the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy.” (Job 38:7) Were the “morning stars” and “all the sons of God” created that same day, but before the earth? Now notice that the earth is formless and void. Was this the way God created it, that the angels rejoiced and shouted for joy? “In the beginning” is that time before God said “let there be light” and stretches back into eternity. It was a period of time when God created the heavens (universe) and the planet earth and the sun, moon and the stars. This is why we have light from stars that are millions of light years away. Why would God say, “Let there be light” if the sun, moon and stars already existed? Because God had made a “thick darkness its (the earth’s) swaddling band.” (Job 38: 9) The term “swaddling band” implies that there was light outside of this band, otherwise it wouldn’t be a band. When God said, “Let there be light” this thick darkness cleared enough to allow in the light from the sun. On the 4th day God cleared the atmosphere again, where the sun, moon and stars could be seen. Verse 16 merely expands on how God was providing the light by the objects created “in the beginning.” Hoth |

19 | In the beginning | Gen 1:1 | HOTH | 221559
What is the difference between "in the beginning" of verse Gen 1:1 and "one day" of verse 5? A day is an evening and morning. Since days did not exist prior to God allowing the light of verse 3, would "in the beginning" not be the period of time prior to "one day"? Thank you, Hoth |

20 | In the beginning | Gen 1:1 | HOTH | 221586
Hi Keliy, Are you then saying that “God created the heavens and the earth” (the universe and the planet earth) prior to the first day? Could “in the beginning” be a term encompassing eternity going back in time, but prior to the first day? My understanding is that God and The Word have always been and were "in the beginning." John 1:2 It would seem that time has always been, but God now gives a way to measure that time in a limited human way, but beyond the first day. We can now measure time in light years, but that is a measurement that takes time a great distance back. I hope this is not too confusing. Thanks, Hoth |
