Fred, The comittment needs to be made daily and you also need to daily examine your conscience. Beyond that, may I suggest you find a mature Christian man, who knows how to keep confidences, who can assist you. Use him as a prayer partner and a sounding board and as a person to whom you can be accountable. Meet with him weekly to examine your conscience and discuss the past week. Vices must be replaced by virtues which are the habitual practices of Christian life just as vices are the habitual practices of the sinful life. Nature abhors a vacuum and you cannot successfully stop practicing a vice without replacing it with the practice of its corresponding virtue. I hope this is of some help to you. Pray daily to God for His gift of grace and perseverance. No matter how often you fall, immediately get up, acknowledge your sin beg God's forgiveness and grace and you will persevere. Emmaus |

568 | Is God really a restorer of things ? | Bible general Archive 1 | Emmaus | 70735
Searching4Him, You are undoubtedly going througha very difficult and trying period. Do not despair. This forum is really not set up to provide the kind of mature Christian counselling that need, which is hands on and in person. Try to find someone now and don't put it off. The bible is full of stories of men and women who sinned seriously, repented and were restored to grace, but even then there was a price to pay. I have no doubt that some on this forum could attest to a similar pattern in their own lives. But what you need is competent qualified help. We can pray for you, your family and the young woman, but this is not a counselling forum. Please seek competent counselling in your community and know that God can and will forgive a repentent sinner, but as you already seem to know what you are going through will not likely be a painless process nor one without some kind of loss. I will pray for you. Emmaus |

Figoyuen, Catholics (I am one)have a devotion to Mary because of her intimate relationship with Jesus and the Father and Holy Spirit and because of the important role God gave her in salvation history. Catholic and Greek Orthodox Bibles have the same New Testament as Protestants, but in the Old Testament they follow the canon of the Septuagint, the Greek version of the Old Testament in use among Jews at the time of Jesus and the Apostle. That was the bible used by most of the Jews and early Christians outside the Holy Land. Emmaus Emmaus |

572 | Praying to Mary isn't worship? | Bible general Archive 1 | Emmaus | 71077
prfctpeace, Catholics do venerate or honor Mary and the saints, and ask them to pray for us and with us to God,but veneration or honor is a different thing altogether from worship which is due to God alone. In the Latin the word for venerate or honor is dulia and the word for worship is latria. Dulia is the honor given to saints, latria is the worship given to God. The Hail Mary is a prayer that quotes from passage s in Luke 1:28, 42. Catholics do ask mary and tyhe saints in heaven to pray for us just as we ask friends to pray for us here, because we believe that our bonds of love in Christ can not be destroyed by death. They are still in Christ, but in a differnt manner. As for images, I carry one of my mother but I do not worship her although I do love and honor or venerate her and will still do so when she has died. Emmaus |

One, This issue has been covered at length more than once before on this forum. Agreement seems unlikely. Below is a link that addresses and responds to most of the point you have made. One, "how any one can read Rev 5:8 and see in between the lines dead saints hearing our prayers and interceding on our behalf is beyond me.It just says it’s the prayers of the saints, I always have seen this as the living saints prayers." Exactly! They are the prayers of the living saints! And they are being offered by the other saints in heaven (the twenty four elders)like incense. That is the intercessory prayer of the saints in heaven. The communion of saints is not broken by death (Rom 8:34-38). We are all still in communion with one another in and through Jesus interceding for one another in and as the Body of Christ (Ep 1:22-23; Col 3:15). Emmaus |

575 | Is suicide a sin, will you go to hell? | Bible general Archive 1 | Emmaus | 71220
angelface, Why do you need peace of mind on this subject? Suicide is antithetical to the very concept of peace of mind. The fact is that Chritianity condems suicide because it is a sign of the lack of the theological virtue of hope that goes with faith and charity. But only God knows with absolute certainty who is in hell and only He knows what may have been the true mental and spiritual condition of one who commits suicide and its real cause. You are not going to get absolute assurance on this question. Emmaus |

richilou, It is a wise man who concentrates on what he knows and is silent in areas where his knowledge is lacking. Your knowledge about Catholic doctrine is lacking. Let me address just two parts of your post. " Catholics have nothing to do with the salvation presented in the Bible. They believe in Jesus Christ, yes, but at the same time, they believe in a salvation by works,(richilou's mistaken belief about Catholic docrtine), which is completely condemned by the apostle Paul in Ephesians 2.8-10. " The real Catholic teaching from the Council of Trent: "CHAPTER VIII HOW THE GRATUITOUS JUSTIFICATION OF THE SINNER BY FAITH IS TO BE UNDERSTOOD But when the Apostle says that man is justified by faith and freely,[44] these words are to be understood in that sense in which the uninterrupted unanimity of the Catholic Church has held and expressed them, namely, that we are therefore said to be justified by faith, because faith is the beginning of human salvation, the foundation and root of all justification, without which it is impossible to please God[45] and to come to the fellowship of His sons; and we are therefore said to be justified gratuitously, because none of those things that precede justification, whether faith or works, merit the grace of justification." "Canons Concerning Justification Canon 1. If anyone says that man can be justified before God by his own works, whether done by his own natural powers or through the teaching of the law,[110] without divine grace through Jesus Christ, let him be anathema." "Their system is hypocritical without realizing it fully themselves. So, for instance, they say that baptism is a key to enter the family of God. I ask you a question: "Have you ever noticed that, on the cross, one of the criminals who was crucified with Jesus, has been saved by his conversion, and no baptism has never been done for him." (richilou's mistaken belief about catholic doctrine) The real Catholic doctrine about baptism from the Catechism of the Catholic Church: "VI. THE NECESSITY OF BAPTISM 1257 The Lord himself affirms that Baptism is necessary for salvation.[59] He also commands his disciples to proclaim the Gospel to all nations and to baptize them.[60] Baptism is necessary for salvation for those to whom the Gospel has been proclaimed and who have had the possibility of asking for this sacrament.[61] The Church does not know of any means other than Baptism that assures entry into eternal beatitude; this is why she takes care not to neglect the mission she has received from the Lord to see that all who can be baptized are "reborn of water and the Spirit." God has bound salvation to the sacrament of Baptism, but he himself is not bound by his sacraments. 1258 The Church has always held the firm conviction that those who suffer death for the sake of the faith without having received Baptism are baptized by their death for and with Christ. This Baptism of blood, like the desire for Baptism, brings about the fruits of Baptism without being a sacrament. 1259 For catechumens who die before their Baptism, their explicit desire to receive it, together with repentance for their sins, and charity, assures them the salvation that they were not able to receive through the sacrament." richilou, If it wasn't for the Catholic Church preserving and copying the Bible over the centuries, especially the New Testament, you wouldn't even have the bible. In fact the Catholic Church was proclaiming and preaching the Gospel before the New Testament was even written. That is how it was able to discern what books reflected the true Gospel and word of God and what did not when they identified the cannonical books of the New Testement. That is one Catholic Tradition you and all Christians hold, whether you know it or not. Catholic Tradition and Councils are what determined the table of contents of your New Testament my friend. It did not come with a table of contents. Emmaus |

579 | What are the transcendence of God? | Bible general Archive 1 | Emmaus | 71615
schoolhelp, The information and links below should give you lots of help. "Divine Immanence and Transcendence To Deists is attributed the view -- or at least a tendency towards the view -- that God, having created the universe, leaves it to pursue its own course according to fixed laws, and ceases, so to speak, to take any further interest in, or responsibility for what may happen; and Divine immanence is urged, sometimes too strongly, in opposition to this view. God is immanent, or intimately present, in the universe because His power is required at every moment to sustain creatures in being and to concur with them in their activities. Conservation and concursus are so to speak, continuations of creative activity, and imply an equally intimate relation of God towards creatures, or rather an equally intimate and unceasing dependence of creatures on God. Whatever creatures are, they are by virtue of God's conserving power; whatever they do, they do by virtue of God's concursus. It is not, of course, denied that creatures are true causes and produce real effects; but they are only secondary causes, their efficiency is always dependent and derived; God as the First Cause is an ever active cooperator in their actions. This is true even of the free acts of an intelligent creature like man; only it should be added in this case that Divine responsibility ceases at the point where sin or moral evil enters in. Since sin as such, however, is an imperfection, no limitation is thus imposed on God's supremacy. But lest insistence on Divine immanence should degenerate into Pantheism -- and there is a tendency in this direction on the part of many modern writers -- it is important at the same time to emphasize the truth of God's transcendence, to recall, in other words, what has been stated several times already, that God is one simple and infinitely perfect personal Being whose nature and action in their proper character as Divine infinitely transcend all possible modes of the finite, and cannot, without contradiction, be formally identified with these."
