"If any one does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his own family, he has disowned the faith and is worse than an unbeliever." 1 Timothy 5:8 "How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a vagabond, and want like an armed man. 3326 | Col 1:24 What is he saying exactly? | 1 Timothy | Emmaus | 26200
Since there is nothing lacking in Christ's redemptive suffering on the cross, the only thing lacking that Paul could be referring to is our entering into and sharing in that suffering as members of the body of Christ. "The Spirit itself bears witness that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if only we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.Romans 8:16-17. Jesus clearly laid out the conditions of discipleship when he said that we must daily take up our cross and follow him. Matt:18:24, Mark:8:34 and 10:21, Luke9:23. |

WTB, Theologoy has ben defined in a nutshell as: "faith seeking understanding." Faith and eeking understanding are not incompatible. Nor are the two imcompatible with a personal relationship with God. All theology is not bad nor is all theology good. Emmaus |

3331 | Biblical - women preachers/teachers??? | 1 Tim 2:12 | Emmaus | 123602
Hi Zsuzsi, I never cease to be amazed at your facility in English. You write better than many whose mother tongue is English. You may find this letter on the topic in question of interest. It was written by a well known Eastern European preacher of whom you may have heard. http://www.ewtn.com/library/PAPALDOC/JP2MULIE.HTM God bless! Emmaus |

3333 | Biblical - women preachers/teachers??? | 1 Tim 2:12 | Emmaus | 123630
Hi Zsuszi, The previous link I gave you deals with the general concept of the dignity of women. Below you will find a link to a much shorter document regarding the reservation of priestly ordination to men, which of course is a very different thing from the ministry as understood in Protestant communions and even different from the understanding of priestly ordination in the Anglican communion. I thought it important that the first link was presnted before this one, so that the whole context of the subject is preserved. Ministry in the broader sense is fully open to women and has been exercised to the great benefit of the Church since its founding by Christ. 3335 | Husband of but one wife - Elder? | 1 Tim 3:2 | Emmaus | 76084
Rocky, I think the "one wife" qualification along with the other qualifications reflect the idea that the candidate for bishop must be stable and temperate in his personal life, that is to say, mature in all ways. Another way of looking at the "one wife" phrase is to see it in the context of the imagery of the OT and NT of the relationship between God and His Church as a marital one, that should be faithful and exlusive. Israel was of unfaithful and described as such in the OT in general and in Hosea in particular. God is always faithfull and never abandons His wife, Israel, to take a new wife even when Israel is unfaithful. He may punish her, but He does not abandon her for another. The bishop in relationship to the Church is something of a stand-in for Jesus the Bridegroom of the Church and as such his personal life, if he is married, or had been married and widowed, should reflect his faithfulness to his wife in order to be considered for the office of bishop. I hope this is of some help to you. Emmaus |

3337 | What scripture tells us to join church | 1 Tim 3:15 | Emmaus | 57594
sufficient grace, "if I am delayed, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and bulwark of the truth. " 1 Timothy 3:15 "and he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fulness of him who fills all in all." Ephesian 1:22-23 If the Church is the body of of Christ, and thge pillar and bulwark of truth, how can one be a Christian without belonging to the body? If you are outside the Church you are outside the body of Christ and not in Christ. Emmaus |

3338 | how could you spot a false teacher? | 1 Tim 3:15 | Emmaus | 136748
Junmeskie and msgzzz, I am Catholic and have been on this forum for three years. It is a Bible Study forum. It is not about pushing a particular agenda or getting in the face of others. Those who bash Catholic and the Catholic faith have had their privilege to post revoked. We are not here to have endless debate. Please respect the fact that all of us are guest here and the host organization is a Protestant company. They could make this a forum closed to Catholics if they wished. Curtsey toward the host's background is a minimal expectation. You are free to discuss scripture and to put forward the Catholic position on scripture so long as it is done courteously and with the understanding that your Catholic position may be debated or challenged. Al, I would like to offer a little background history. I have been on this forum since November 2001 and have established friendships with a number of the other longtime members with whom you are interacting. If you search my archived posts you will see that we have even covered much of the same territory being covered now. During my time here, other posters, now gone, have made intemperate attacks on the Catholic Church. They were rebuked by the same people with whom you are interacting. The posting privileges of the abusers were revoked after abuse complaints, not by me but, by other Protestants on this site. Your will notice that one of the rules here is against pushing denominational biases and also against Arminan / Calvinist debates. This is an in house Protestant dispute. Some have been revoked because of violations of that rule. I hope you will post on threads other than Catholic / Protestant controversies since this is really a Bible Study Forum and there are many areas of interest in which we have common ground with our "separated brethren." This is a place for civil and charitable study of biblical questions. Making one's point and moving on without expecting agreement or conversion is important. Otherwise this site will become nothing but an endless debate forum. Charity and a broad interest in scriptural questions and study is essential to longevity on this Forum. I look forward to seeing your posts on other threads. Emmaus |
