3302 | Sabbath is Saturday or not ?? | Col 2:16 | Emmaus | 146058
Merv, "There is historical that the changing of the worship day is a fulfillment of Daniel 7:25." Here is Daniel 7:7,8, 25 "After this, in the visions of the night I saw the fourth beast, different from all the others, terrifying, horrible, and of extraordinary strength; it had great iron teeth with which it devoured and crushed, and what was left it trampled with its feet. "I was considering the ten horns it had, when suddenly another, a little horn, sprang out of their midst, and three of the previous horns were torn away to make room for it. This horn had eyes like a man, and a mouth that spoke arrogantly. ... "He will speak out against the Most High and wear down the saints of the Highest One, and he will intend to make alterations in times and in law; and they will be given into his hand for a time, times, and half a time. " Here is an alternative explanation: "Alexander's empire was different from all the others in that it was Western rather than Oriental in inspiration. The ten horns represent the kings of the Seleucid dynasty, the only part of the Hellenistic empire that concerned the author. The little horn is Antiochus IV Epiphanes (175-163 B.C.), the worst of the Seleucid kings, who usurped the throne." "The reference is to the persecutions of Antiochus IV and his attempt to force the Jews to give up their customs and to adopt Hellenistic ways (1 Maccabees 1:33-34) A year, two years, and a half-year: an indefinite, evil period of time. As seven is the Jewish "perfect" number, half of it signifies great imperfection. Actually, this corresponds fairly accurately to the duration of Antiochus' persecution." NAB footnotes on Daniel 7:7,8,25. Read about the persecution of Antiochus IV here: http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/bible/1maccabees/1maccabees1.htm#v33 Emmaus |

3304 | Explain the 2 chapter of 1 Thessalonians | 1 Thessalonians | Emmaus | 98791
brownie, 1 Thes 2:1 through 3:13 discusses Paul's previous relations with the Thessalonians. This is in the larger context of 1:2 through 3:13 which is a set of three sections of thanksgiving, connected with defenses of his previous conduct and the present concerns. See Acts 16 and 17 for context and background of how Paul came to Thessolonica from Phillppi and then left there for Berea after being persecuted and even followed from there to Berea by his opponents in thessalonica. I hope this is of some assisatnce. Emmaus |

3309 | Really live? | 1 Thess 3:8 | Emmaus | 151649
Mommapbs, Doc said: "Reading the biographies of great men and women of faith should be a discipline of every believer. "For example, I strongly encourage that you read the biography of John Newton, the man who wrote Amazing Grace. "By the way, you might also be blessed by the biography by Corrie ten Boom. When I read your words, I remembered something she said: "Look within, be depressed; look without, be distressed; look above, be at rest!" Be encouraged, dear sister, the Lord is the author and perfector of our faith!" I agree. That is the whole idea behind reading the lives of the Saints in the Catholic tradition. I also highly recommend The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom. Over the years I have read it aloud to my daughter as she was growing up and then we read it to each other in turns and she has given it as gifts to friends. Emmaus |

ljw9292 The "dead in Christ" are the saved who have died before the Second Coming. They are still part of the mystical "body of Christ" the Church, which is composed of the living and the dead (those who are "asleep") who are in Christ. Read 1 Thessalonians 13-18. Emmaus |

3311 | What.... Gabriel? | 1 Thess 4:16 | Emmaus | 126060
The NAB and the NASB have "the voice of the archangel" but do not say "Gabriel". However, God usually sends angels to announce important arrivals like the birth of John the Baptist and the Incarnation of the Son in Luke 1. There are only three angels named in the Scripture: Michael and Gabriel in Protestant bibles and also Raphael in Catholic bibles. Gabriel is: strength of God or God is strong; Michael: who is like God; and Raphael: God heals. Gabriel is not called an archangel in the bible, but only in the Book of Enoch, where seven archangels are named. There Gabriel is not a messenger but one of the angels that stands before God. Gabriel tends to be associated with messianic fulfillment. In Luke, he is modelled after his appearance in Daniel Emmaus |

The English word rapture is not found in English translations of 1 Thessalonians 4:17. Rapture is a transliteration of "rapiemur" in the Latin Vulgate New Testament of St. Jerome. 1 Thes 4:17 deinde nos qui vivimus qui relinquimur simul rapiemur cum illis in nubibus obviam Domino in aera. Recent "rapture" theology, apart from the basic doctrine of the "Second Coming" is a whole other discussion and only about one hundred years old and is generally attributed to a man named Darby. |

duketunes, It is not 1 Thes 4:17 or Second Coming that is in dispute about the rapture. It is all the extrapolation and interpretation that is disputed among various camps. What one person means by "The rapture" and what another means by it in the broad intrpretaion can be very different. Emmaus |

3318 | satan and his power?!?!?!?!?!?hmmmmmm... | 2 Thessalonians | Emmaus | 96873
DL5, First let me say I admire your testimony and perserverence expressed in your personal history posted recently. On the subject of binding and loosing in Matt 16:198-19 and 18:18: I think it is very clear from the context that these verses refer to binding authority in the governance of the Church by Peter and the other Apostles and they are not in this context referring to the binding of demons. The terms "binding" and "loosing" were already in use among the Rabbis of Jesus' time and can be seen in the Talmud. It referred to the authority to make binding decisions within the religious community. Citing these passages in reference to the resistance or "binding" of demons is, I believe, reading something into these particular passages something that is not there. Emmaus |

3319 | satan and his power?!?!?!?!?!?hmmmmmm... | 2 Thessalonians | Emmaus | 96885
DL5, Jesus defeated the enemy, not us. Jesus can bind him. Scripture written to Christians by the very Peter whom you say had the power to bind demons warns us not to be overconfident in dealing with the devil ourselves but rather to rely on God while resisting, without reference to us binding: 1 Pet 5:7-11 "casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world. After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you. To Him be dominion forever and ever. Amen." I say this as one who believes in exorcism. But even for an Exorcist the first intruction is not to match wits or strength with the demon, but to rely conmpletely on the power of God with and through "prayer and fasting" as Jesus told his disciples. It may seem a fine distinction, but I believe an important one. Not every Christian is an exorcist, nor would most want to be, I suspect. It is spiritual warfare at a high level and there are sometimes real casualties. Emmaus |
