Even Jesus called 12 and 10 men is the minimum for a the Jewish congregation. I never recall two people being described as congregating or being decribed as congregation. This all sounds like an authority issue to me. I gather you wish to be the authority, at least as far as yourself is concerned. Personally, that inclination has always led me into trouble. As I recall Jesus did establish a hierarchy in his Church. I have never trusted a man in authority who did not recognize and obey the authority above him. I trust even less a man who does not want to recognize any authority over him. In the civil community the prisons are full of such. I have visited friends there. And those who haven't found there way there yet create mischief and trouble in the community until they do. There are spiritual analogies to be drawn from this. But I see no promising future to your line of reasoning. For me. It does not pass the test of common sense. Kind of like the "victimless crime" argument, which is an oxymoron. Emmaus |

723 | Superior Hope | Heb 11:40 | Emmaus | 127292
The Body of Christ is the Church, which means Assembly from the Greek Eklesia. How can one be in Christ and not be in the Assembly, which we are told not to forsake, for the obvious reason that we would be forsaking the Body of Christ? 1 Cor 12 is all about the parts of the Body of Christ. Is not the body together and connected? Can a family thrive or even survive as a real family if the husband and the wife and the children do not come together but are merely ships passing in the night or ships entering and leaving the port at different times? This seems so obvious even in the natural, let alone the examples in the scripture and the consatnt practice of the Church from the time of Jesus and his disciples. It is plain common sense, whether an explicit law or not. Where I come from it is also Church law. Emmaus |

724 | Can we learn anything from Naaman? | 1 Sam 15:22 | Emmaus | 127233
Country Girl, "What should we learn from Naaman and his story about his healing from leporsy?" We can learn to trust and obey. We can learn that "to obey is better than sacrifice." 1 Samuel 15:22 Irenaeus "‘And [Naaman] dipped himself . . . seven times in the Jordan’ [2 Kgs. 5:14]. It was not for nothing that Naaman of old, when suffering from leprosy, was purified upon his being baptized, but [this served] as an indication to us. For as we are lepers in sin, we are made clean, by means of the sacred water and the invocation of the Lord, from our old transgressions, being spiritually regenerated as newborn babes, even as the Lord has declared: ‘Except a man be born again through water and the Spirit, he shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven’" (Fragment 34 [A.D. 190]). I think the passage on Naaman being cleansed by bathing in the Jordan is an interesting "Type" or Old testament foreshadowing of baptism. Emmaus |

The Te Deum, the traditional hymn of thanksgiving. In thanks for Justme's healing. You are God we praise you; You are the Lord: we acclaim you; You are eternal father: all creation worships you. To you all angels, all the powers of heaven Cherubim and Seraphim, sing in endless praise; Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are fiull of your glory. The glorious company of apostles praise you. The noble fellowship of prophets praise you. The white-robed army of martyrs praise you. Throughout the world the holy Church acclaims you: Father, of majesty unbounded, your true and only Son, worthy of all worship, and the holy spirit, advocate and guide. You, Christ, are the king of glory, the eternal Son of the Father. When you became man to set us free you did not spurn the Virgin's womb. You overcame the sting of death, and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers. You are seated at God's right hand in glory. We believe that you will come and be our judge. Come then Lord, and help your people, bought with the price of your own blood, and bring us with your saints to glory everlasting. |

Steve, The Jewsih calendar was Lunar, 28 days and the first day was the first day of the week. The Jewish calendar has numbers rather than names for the days: First day, second day etc. The fifteenth day of a month is the first day of the week and the eight day following that would also be the first day of the week. That is the way I figurwe it. See this article on the calendar: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/03166a.htm Emmaus |

The Amplified Bible Col 2:9 For in Him the whole fullness of Deity (the Godhead)continues to dwell in bodily form [giving complete expression of the divine nature]. Col 2:10 And you are in Him, made full and having come to fullness of life [in Christ you too are filled with the Godhead--Father, Son and Holy Spirit--and reach full spiritual stature]. And He is the Head of all rule and authority [of every angelic principality and power]. |

734 | Why Mary Magdalene did not recognize Him | 2 Cor 5:16 | Emmaus | 127071
St. Paul explains why Mary Magdalene did not at first recognize the risen Christ in John 20:15. "For the love of Christ controls us, having concluded this, that one died for all, therefore all died; and He died for all, so that they who live might no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf. Therefore from now on we recognize no one according to the flesh; even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him in this way no longer. 2 Cor 5:14-16. Emmaus |

735 | Superior Hope | Heb 11:40 | Emmaus | 127067
Country Girl, I just want to address a small portion of your post, which may be off the main line of the thread. "That's why we as God's obedient children must give Christ the preiminence by worshiping Him on Sunday, the first day of the week and NOT any other day like the Sabbath. Although it's a tough thing for some people to do, in my opinion we should learn to give up our love affair with the OT and put its AUTHORITY on a shelf and move on with modern christianity as described in the NT." It is interesting that rarely is Zechariah 14 used to help Seventh Day Adventists understand why the Christian church worships on the first day. According to Zechariah 14;16-19, the worship of the New Jerusalem will center on "the feast of booths" which is the only festival mentioned during the "day of the Lord." While Old Testament Jews normally keep the seventh day of the week as the Sabbath, during the feast of booths they kept the first day of the week as the day of rest. (Lev 23:33-36) The feast of booths celebrated the Exodus from Egypt and the New Covenant. The New Covenant Exodus is spoken of in the first oracle of Zechariah as an Exodus "from Egypt.' (Zexch 10:11) Revelation also deals with this connection between the Old covenant Expodus celebrated in the feat of booths and the new Covenant Exodus from spiritual Egypt in 70 A.D. when Jerusalem and the Old Covenant system of animal sacrifice was was destroyed. 737 | Preterist's view of Zech 14? | Zech 14:4 | Emmaus | 127042
mark, This response to your question is extremely abbreviated. All the Early Church Fathers interpreted Zech 14:4 as happening in the first century. Tertullian connected it to the Agony in the Garden. The splitting of Mt. Olivet is explained as the split within Judaism caused by Jesus. There was no longer Jew and Gentile, but now only Christian and non Christian. The Great Battle was the Passion of Christ in which He was victorious. The split is between the Old Covenmant and the New Covenant. Paul and John both address these new categories of Christian and non Christians in the New testament. May I suggest a book on the subject of the rapture. it is: Rapture: The End Times Error That Leaves the Bible Behind by David Currie Sophia Institute Press He devotes an entire Appendix chapter to Zechariah and its meaning and relationship to Daniel. He also deals with evry other passage of scripture used to support the rapturist position. In addition he address the problems of hyperpreterism. It is a powerful book by one who held the rapturist position into his forties. It is written in a pleasant and charitable, not shrill, style. Ht opens with a presentation and defense of the rapturist position for 221 pages and then moves on the oppposing view. 475 pages total. The best and most thorough book on the subject that I have seen. Emmaus |

738 | How does being under the law prepare us? | Heb 5:11 | Emmaus | 127020
In ancient times, a son, before he came of age, was placed under the authority of a tutor who taught him and discilined him until he was ready to take a place of authority in the family. This is reflected somewhat I think in statements about Jesus in Luke 2:51-52 and Hebrews 5:11. He learned obedience by the things He suffered. Even in the military you are first taught to obey before you are ever given authority to command obedience. Emmaus |

739 | Do portals exist between heaven n earth? | Bible general Archive 2 | Emmaus | 126940
daughter of Glenn, I think J Crichton offered the best answer. Better than my first one. The word portal is actually a synonym for door and door is one of the descriptions of portal in the dictionary. That is why doorkeepers are often called porters. They receive quests at the door or portal and help then with their luggage. JCrichton said Jesus was the only portal. I think she is correct. John 10:7 So Jesus said to them again, "Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. John 10:9 "I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. Emmaus |

740 | How do you view Rev 2:1-7 | Rev 2:1 | Emmaus | 126936
followinghim, "The Letters to the Seven Churches "In the church's exegetical tradition, the letters to the seven churches have been understood to have both literal and more-than-literal senses. That is, they can be read as speaking to John's local circle of churches in Asia Minor and commenting on the various pastoral problems they faced. But they can also be seen as a) speaking of the Church universal and various phases in its history; b) a picture of various states of the individual Christian's soul or c) (what we shall focus on here) a recapitulation a covenant history. In other words, the seven ages of the Old Testament provide the source material for the seven letters to the churches. And so, Ephesus is described using the language of Paradise, which takes us back to the Garden in Genesis and promises "the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God " (2:7). Similarly, The letter to Smyrna recalls the age of the patriarchs and particularly the drama of Joseph who was thrown into prison, tested, and eventually raised up to share in the authority of the crown. The letter to Pergamum makes use of imagery drawn from the time of Israel's wanderings in the wilderness in its mention of Balaam (2:14). Balaam was a false prophet who counseled Israel's enemies to seduce Israel into inter-marriage and thence idolatry. Numbers records that Phinehas opposed this with the sword, killing an Israelite man who slept with a Midianite woman. Revelation recalls this image of spiritual adultery and the action of Phinehas, with Jesus' pledge to "war against them with the sword of my mouth" (2:16). In other words, Jesus is telling the church at Pergamum, "You now resemble the condition of my people in the time of the wilderness, and I will judge just as I did then." The letter also recalls God's care for Israel in the wilderness in its mention of the "hidden manna" (2:17). Thyatira's letter draws from the period of monarchy. Revelation 2:20 complains against the church's toleration of "Jezebel." Jezebel was a Queen who perverted the Kingdom of David in Jerusalem and was the mortal enemy of the prophet Elijah (see 1 Kings). Similarly, Revelation 2:26 uses language drawn from the Kingdom of David (specifically Psalm 2:8). Sardis' letter draws on the prophetic period, summarizing what virtually all the prophets have to say to Israel during the centuries of decline after the reign of David: "Remember then what you received and heard; keep that, and repent. If you will not awake, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come upon you" (3:3). Similarly, the assurances given to the Old Testament prophets of a "remnant" in Israel who remain faithful to the covenant are echoed in Revelation 3:4. The letter to Philadelphia draws on language from Haggai, Ezra and Nehemiah concerning the period of Israel's return from exile. At that time too, the returning exiles had "but little power," yet God assured them that they possessed his authority to accomplish his work on earth in the face of their enemies. Significantly, the post-exilic Jews were entrusted with the task of rebuilding the Temple and the city of Jerusalem, just as Philadelphia is assured "He who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God; never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem" (3:12). Finally, Laodicea corresponds to Pharisaic Judaism in the first century, which we find Jesus constantly remonstrating against: the lukewarm people who were blind to the coming of the Lord, poor and naked, while vaunting their riches and spiritual self-sufficiency. As a final note, it should also be noted that this last diagnosis can rather easily be applied to the state of the Church in America and Europe today as well. And this is not accidental, for as with all Scripture, Scripture is written, not as a mere archeological artifact about first century Christian communities, but "for our benefit" as St. Paul says. If we behave like the Church at Laodicea, we shall face what that Church faced. But if we heed the merciful call of Jesus, we shall just as surely find his mercy if we "be zealous and repent" (3:19)."
