661 | Doesn't the name Baal mean idol? | 1 Chr 14:11 | Emmaus | 129354
Baal means lord or husband. It was also the name for Cannanite idol or god. Jesus played on this meaning when he spoke to the Samritan woman at the well. Go to the Quick search Box on the right side of the screen and enter theses two numbers one at a time and you will see a commentary on the Samaritan woman encounter in John. 79414 79415 Emmaus |

663 | Matt, Mark, Luke, John | NT general Archive 1 | Emmaus | 129292
Wah Hong, Welcome to the forum. Matthew, Mark and and Luke are called the Synoptic Gospels because they see with "one eye" or one view in that they have similar structures and many of the same stories. matthew is attributed to the Apostle Matthew (Levi)and is dierected mostly toward Jews and Jewish converts to christianity. It has a pattern of comapring Christ to Moses by parralells themes and is divided into and introductary infancy narrative, five narratives and discources and a closing with the passion, death and resurrection of Christ. Mark is the shortest Gospel attributed to a companion of Peter and seems to focus on jesus as a powerful miracle worker which may be directed to a Roman gentile audience impressed by displays of power and authority. Luke is the only gospel written by a Greek Gentile Christian, the physician Luke who was St. pauls companion on some of his missionary journeys. Luke also wrote the Acts of the Apostles. Luke's Gospel focuses more on the universal call of the Gospel to the Gentiles as well as the Jews and women and the Holy Spirit are more prominent in his Gospel. John stands apart from the Synoptics in that it is based on an entirely differnt pattern and has many details and stories not found in the other three gospels. It is much more a theological treatment of Jesus and seems to assume much of what is found in the synoptics and assumes his readers are familiar with them. It is structured around the liturgical feast days of the Jewish calendar, such as Passover , the Feast of Tabernacles or Booths. It is divided into a Prologue or introduction, The Book of Signs from chapter 1:19 through 12:50, The Book of Glory from cahpter 13:1 through 20:31 and the Resurrection Epilogue 21:1-25. Although each is called a Gospel, they all are really presenting the on Gospel or stroy of the good news of salvation. Emmaus |

Correction to my earlier post. Najaf is a city in Iraq. Iraq was known in the Bible as the Babylonian Empire, whose capitol city was Babylon. What is now Iran was known as Persia in the Bible. |

671 | Does Islam fit here? | 2 John 1:7 | Emmaus | 129201
DocTrinsograce. I did not say I was resistent to Ecumenism. I said: "that many Catholics also have negative feelings about Ecumenism" because of the response it often gets, which does not even mean they are opposed to it, although some are. Now about Bible Study... Emmaus |

672 | Does Islam fit here? | 2 John 1:7 | Emmaus | 129199
DocTrinsograce, " When did I ever say that the reformation was about putting Bibles into the hands of the people?" I think Ed was referring to this: "Ecumenism that teaches the worship of unity even at the cost of truth. That would put us back under the authority of priests and popes, with no apology or consideration of the hundreds of thousands who were killed and tortured for trying to put Bibles in the hands of common people." But now, all having been advised of the wicked history of Popery and realizing that many Catholics also have negative feelings about Ecumenism because of such responses to it as seen above, perhaps we can all get back to the Bible Study for which this Forum was created. 674 | several "Marys" in the Bible? | Bible general Archive 2 | Emmaus | 129133
Geof, Catholics do not worship Mary as they worship God. They do honor and revere her along with the saints. Only God is worthy of divine worship or Latria. The saints are due honor called dulia and Mary hyperdulia. And the Greek Orthodox make Catholics look like pikers in their honor of Mary. But who could ever bestow more honor on her than God already has? See this link for an explanation of the Greek. http://ic.net/(insert tilde here)erasmus/RAZ204.HTM On the question about the "brothers and sisters" of Jesus see this link. http://www.catholic.com/library/Brethren_of_the_Lord.asp Regarding the first resurrection and the second resurrection. The first is baptism (Romans 6)where we are baptised into his death and resurrection. the second resurrection is the resurrection of the body at the Second coming. (See also Rev 20:6) "556 On the threshold of the public life: the baptism; on the threshold of the Passover: the Transfiguration. Jesus' baptism proclaimed "the mystery of the first regeneration", namely, our Baptism; the Transfiguration "is the sacrament of the second regeneration": our own Resurrection.(St. Thomas Aquinas, STh III, 45, 4, ad 2) From now on we share in the Lord's Resurrection through the Spirit who acts in the sacraments of the Body of Christ. The Transfiguration gives us a foretaste of Christ's glorious coming, when he "will change our lowly body to be like his glorious body."(Phil 3:21) But it also recalls that "it is through many persecutions that we must enter the kingdom of God":(Acts 14:22) "Peter did not yet understand this when he wanted to remain with Christ on the mountain. It has been reserved for you, Peter, but for after death. For now, Jesus says: "Go down to toil on earth, to serve on earth, to be scorned and crucified on earth. Life goes down to be killed; Bread goes down to suffer hunger; the Way goes down to be exhausted on his journey; the Spring goes down to suffer thirst; and you refuse to suffer?"(St. Augustine, Sermo 78, 6: PL 38, 492-493; cf. Lk 9:33) http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc/para/556.htm On the second coming see this: http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc/p1s2c2a7.htm#I Emmaus |

New Creature, Birth is usually passive for the one being born. I hold to baptismal regeneration and was baptized and "born again" as an infant, so I can't claim any active role. Therefore, I will go with passive. It is the living from then on that is active. Emmaus |

chesed, "I wasn't sure if this site was open to Catholics, so I wanted to state that I was not. But I am glad to see that your view is accepted here." I have been here for several years. I do not know if I would say my Catholic views are always "accepted" here. They are when the Catholic and Protestants view coincide. Otherwise they are generally courteously "respected", so long as I can cite sciptural sources, but not necessarily "accepted." There is a lesson I have learned that would be good for many others to take to heart. When I see that agreement with my position is not likely, having made my point, I move on to other topics. Prudence in this regard is a indispensable virtue. Those who seems incapable of breaking off from a debate do not seem to last long here. Long debates are considered divisive and not good for the Forum. Warnings and revocations of privileges are sent to those who wear out their welcome by endless debate which drives others away from the site. I hope this advice increases your longevity here.
