542 | ref. salt re: Abrahamnic covenent | Lev 2:13 | Emmaus | 132586
Deborah, " The salt of the covenant of your God: the partaking in common of salt by those seated together at table was an ancient symbol of friendship and alliance. Cf Mark 9:49 and Col 4:6; and see note on Numbers 18:19. " footnote from NAB on Lev 2:13 http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/bible/leviticus/leviticus2.htm "An inviolable covenant: literally, "a convenant of salt." Cf 2 Chron 13:5. The reference may perhaps be to the preservative power of salt (cf Matthew 5:13); but more likely the phrase refers to the custom of partaking of the same salt in common to render a contract unbreakable. See note on Lev 2:13." footnote from the NAB on Numbers 18:19 http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/bible/numbers/numbers18.htm NASB Num 18:19 "All the offerings of the holy gifts, which the sons of Israel offer to the LORD, I have given to you and your sons and your daughters with you, as a perpetual allotment. It is an everlasting covenant of salt before the LORD to you and your descendants with you." Emmaus |

Dalcent and others, May I suggest that this and other threads are getting far afield from the purpose of this Forum, which is the study of the Bible, not Church history. We are not going to solve all the problems and division of the past 500 years of Christianity here. And we certainly should not expect to be convincing others of our poisition, nor should we be attacking one another. I find the best practice to be stating one's position and understanding and why and letting that satnd on its own merits, then leaving it at that. This whole argument began due the intemperate remarks of a person who is no longer posting. The blaze is still burning long after he was consumed by his handiwork. Perhaps we can get back to where we were before this started before we and the Forum meet the same fate. Emmaus |

WTB, Theologoy has ben defined in a nutshell as: "faith seeking understanding." Faith and eeking understanding are not incompatible. Nor are the two imcompatible with a personal relationship with God. All theology is not bad nor is all theology good. Emmaus |

547 | Is the rapture biblically supported? | 1 Thess 4:17 | Emmaus | 132139
duketunes, It is not 1 Thes 4:17 or Second Coming that is in dispute about the rapture. It is all the extrapolation and interpretation that is disputed among various camps. What one person means by "The rapture" and what another means by it in the broad intrpretaion can be very different. Emmaus |

549 | How is Adam's sin different? | Rom 5:14 | Emmaus | 132068
alienresident, This may help. The flip side of this is our redemption in Christ. "404 How did the sin of Adam become the sin of all his descendants? The whole human race is in Adam "as one body of one man". By this "unity of the human race" all men are implicated in Adam's sin, as all are implicated in Christ's justice. Still, the transmission of original sin is a mystery that we cannot fully understand. But we do know by Revelation that Adam had received original holiness and justice not for himself alone, but for all human nature. By yielding to the tempter, Adam and Eve committed a personal sin, but this sin affected the human nature that they would then transmit in a fallen state. It is a sin which will be transmitted by propagation to all mankind, that is, by the transmission of a human nature deprived of original holiness and justice. And that is why original sin is called "sin" only in an analogical sense: it is a sin "contracted" and not "committed" - a state and not an act." "405 Although it is proper to each individual, original sin does not have the character of a personal fault in any of Adam's descendants. It is a deprivation of original holiness and justice, but human nature has not been totally corrupted: it is wounded in the natural powers proper to it, subject to ignorance, suffering and the dominion of death, and inclined to sin - an inclination to evil that is called concupiscence". Baptism, by imparting the life of Christ's grace, erases original sin and turns a man back towards God, but the consequences for nature, weakened and inclined to evil, persist in man and summon him to spiritual battle. It means, don't go making excuses. Live the faith. It is not that herd to understand. Deut 30:10 if you obey the LORD your God to keep His commandments and His statutes which are written in this book of the law, if you turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and soul. Deut 30:11 "For this commandment which I command you today is not too difficult for you, nor is it out of reach. Deut 30:12 "It is not in heaven, that you should say, 'Who will go up to heaven for us to get it for us and make us hear it, that we may observe it?' Deut 30:13 "Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, 'Who will cross the sea for us to get it for us and make us hear it, that we may observe it?' |

551 | why passover mentioned in feeding 5000? | John 6:4 | Emmaus | 131912
kjmath13, Similar to the mention of Passover in John 6, see John 7: 2 mention of the feast of Tabernacles, also known as the feast of Booths. During this feast at night the the temple was brightly illuminated with lights and in the mornings of the feast there was a water libation ceremony in which a vessel of water was brought from the pool of Siloam and was pored out before the altar of burnt offerings and the water ran down the steps of the temple. So in John 7 we see Jesus preaching about rivers of living water (John 7:37f) and Jesus calling himself the "light of the world in John 8:12 and in John 9:1-41. Emmaus |

552 | why passover mentioned in feeding 5000? | John 6:4 | Emmaus | 131901
Aslo tied into the Passover and Jesus's fulfilment of it and the memorial meal of that deliverance acoomplished on the cross, is John 19:36. None of Jesus' bones are broken, a reference to Exodus 12:46. Jesus, the lamb of God (John 1:29), slaughtered for our sins is an umblemished lamb without any broken bones even after his death for us. So he is a fit lamb for the liturgical memorial feast of Holy Communion (John 6:53), even as an unblemished lamb with no broken bones was required for the Passover memorial feast of the Jews ((Exodus 12:5; Numbers 9:11-12.
553 | why passover mentioned in feeding 5000? | John 6:4 | Emmaus | 131900
John mentions several of the Jewish liturgical feasts in his Gospel. Jesus fulfills these feast days. "6:4 the Passover:Three times this feast is mentioned in John (2:13; 11:55). It was celebrated annually in Jerusalem to commemorate Israel's deliverance from Egyptian slavery (Ex 12). Central to this feast is a liturgical meal, called a seder, in which the story of the Exodus is told, psalms are sung[Mattb26:30] and and a lamb is eaten with unleavened bread and other condiments. The evangelist mentions this upcoming feast to hint that Jesus will give new and greater meaning to the Passover. He is the true "lamb of God" (John 1:9), whose redeeming work will accomplish a new deliverance from the slavery of sin (John 8:31-36) in a sacramental meal (John 6:53-58; 1 Cor 5:7-9). The significance of Passover, here placed in the background of John 6, will move to the foreground when Jesus transforms this feast into the memorial meal of the New Covenant at the Last supper (Matt 26:17-29)." copyright, Footnote on John 6:4 from the Ignatius catholic Study Bible, Ignatius Press, San Franciso 2003 |

Doc, I made a polite correction of fact about the date of the founding of Jack Chick's enterprise in your post. I did not make any "ad hominem, post hoc, and now straw man" attacks on you. Why would you indicate in your repsonse that I did any of those? Cahrles Chiniquy was a Canadian Catholic priest who immigrated to America and was later excommunicated in 1858. In 1863 he became a Presbyterian minister. In addition to his book Fifty Years in the Church of Rome, he had some other rather strange conspiracy theories such as the Vatican being behind the assasination of President Lincoln in revenge for Lincoln's defense of Chiniquy in an 1856 lawsuit. Here is a link to some information about Chiniquy for those who may be interested. http://www.geocities.com/chiniquy/ Emmaus |

555 | Yet another baptism question! | Col 2:12 | Emmaus | 131819
Huron, Water and the Spirit: Matt 3:16 After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him, Matt 28:19-20 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Acts 10:38 "You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God." John 3:5 Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. John 3:22 After these things Jesus and His disciples came into the land of Judea, and there He was spending time with them and baptizing Acts 2:38, 41 Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit... So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls. Acts 9:17 So Ananias departed and entered the house, and after laying his hands on him said, "Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road by which you were coming, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit." Acts 22:16 'Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.' Acts 9:18 And immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he regained his sight, and he got up and was baptized Acts 10:37-38 you yourselves know the thing which took place throughout all Judea, starting from Galilee, after the baptism which John proclaimed. "You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. Tim, Petra in ancient Greek is a feminine noun, so it had to be changed to Petros to match Peter's gender. Are you being coy with me? You know this Greek stuff much better than me. I only know a few good Greco-Roman self defense moves. I have now retained Kittell as my personal Greek body guard. Emmaus |
