523 | John Baptist's Jewish legal credentials? | OT general | Emmaus | 134257
Reighnskye, "In this light, wouldn't circumcision be on an equivalent level as baptism? The early Jewish church seems to have thought so. How would circumcision and baptism really differ, if at all?" Good question. Baptism is the circumcison of Christ. Colossians 2:11-12 "and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ; having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead." Galatians 5:1-6 "It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery. Behold I, Paul, say to you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of no benefit to you. And I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is under obligation to keep the whole Law. You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. For we through the Spirit, by faith, are waiting for the hope of righteousness. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith working through love." Emmaus |

524 | Born of the water means? | John 3:5 | Emmaus | 134202
Tim, "I have also found it interesting that John 3 doesn't really speak of being 'born again'. The actual word used is 'born from above'. Thus, the contrast would be between 'born from below' and 'born from above' - i.e. natural and spiritual birth." I would find this easier to go along with if "from below" was anywhere in the text, but it is not. It is also interesting that the NASB makes the choice of using "again" rather than "from above" although I have no problem with the later. I agree with the natural and spiritual birth. I just don't think the "water" in this case is referring to the natural birth, which is how Nicodemus misunderstood it. Rather, it seems to me more linked to the "spirit" by "and" as the Holy Spirit is often linked with water and with baptism. And the natural flow of the context of John 3 leads into the verse about apostles baptizing at the end of the chapter. Emmaus |

525 | John Baptist's Jewish legal credentials? | NT general Archive 1 | Emmaus | 134060
Reighnskye, Jesus was the High Priest (Hebrews 3:1). John was in Zacarhiah's line among the Levites. His mother, Elizabeth, was also from Aaron's line. Zachariah was among the eighth of 24 groups of Levitical priests (1 Chron 24:7-19). Zachariah was chosen (Luke 1:8-11) by lot to burn incense on the day the angel spoke to him before the altar of incense in the Holy Place (Ex 30:1-10)where the table of shewbread and the seven branched candlestick also were, not the Holy of Holies where the High Priest entered only once a year (Leviticus 16:15-19)and which was completely empty since there was no longer an Ark of the Covenant. John fulfills Malachi 3:1 in Luke 1:76 and Luke 7:26 and also Isaiah 9:2 and Luke 1:79. He comes in the spirit of Elijah (Luke 1:17), a prophet though of a priestly line and he dresses like Elijah (Luke 3:4; 2 Kings 1:8). He begins his ministry during the reign of the high priest Annas (Luke 3:20). John rather than clinging to his OT priesthood gives way (John 3:30) to the High Priest of the New Covenant, a Priest according to the order of Melchizadek, Jesus (Psalm 110:4; Hebrew 5:6, 10; 6;20; 7:17, 21). 526 | Did God create evil? | Gen 1:31 | Emmaus | 133867
No, God did not create evil. Evil is the mutilation of God's good creation or the absence of good. Gen 1:31 God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good. |

528 | opinions on daniel 2:43? | Dan 2:43 | Emmaus | 133789
Misty, "The iron mixed with clay tile means that they shall seal their alliances by intermarriage, but they shall not stay united, any more than iron mixes with clay" Daniel 2:43, NAB "[36-45] The four successive kingdoms in this apocalyptic perspective are the Babylonian (gold), the Median (silver), the Persian (bronze), and the Hellenistic (iron). The last, after Alexander's death, was divided among his generals (Daniel 2:41-42). The two resulting kingdoms, which most affected the Jews, were the dynasty of the Ptolemies in Egypt and that of the Seleucids in Syria, who tried in vain, by war and through intermarriage, to restore the unity of Alexander's empire (Daniel 2:43). The stone hewn from the mountain is the messianic kingdom awaited by the Jews (Daniel 2:44-45). Our Lord made this image personal to himself; cf Luke 20:17-18." 529 | WERE THERE ONLY JEWS AT THE PENTECOST? | Acts 2:1 | Emmaus | 133650
Reighnsky, "Please understand that the Gospel of Christ was not open to Gentiles until the ministry of Paul, without first possessing a prerequisite Judaic conversion under the Law of Moses." Actually the Gospel was opened to the Gentiles before Paul through Peter under the direction of the Holy Spirit when he preached to and baptized Cornelius and his household in Acts 10 and 11. 532 | The Making of the King James Bible | Gen 1:1 | Emmaus | 133550
Country Girl, It was a good book as a historical, political, sociological and literary study of the personalities and environment in which the KJV translation was done. I recommend it. I suggest looking for it in the library before buying it. It is not so much a devotional as a historical work, but very good. Emmaus |

533 | What is a repentance from dead works? | Heb 6:1 | Emmaus | 133548
Mommapbs, I think this is something we must all gard against in many ways. We tend not to think about sins of omission as much as we do trying to avoid sins of comission. Like the rich man, we thing we are doing fine if we do not abuse the beggar at our door, but we still sin by ignoring his need. The rich man never bothered Lazaraus. Ever heard the phrase, "he won't hurt you, but he won't help you either" used to describe someone? Makes me think of Jesus says, "because you are neither hot nor cold, I will spew you out." |

Mommapbs, Avoiding the hypocritical works of the Pharisees. Matt 23:23 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! 536 | Please clarify above scripture. | Matt 11:11 | Emmaus | 133094
skymystartingpoint, In Matt 11;11 Jesus is comparing the Old Covenant and the new Covenant and saying John the Baptist is the greatest of the Old Covenant saints. But those prophets and saints of old looked forward to the New Covenant and did not participate fully in its blessings (Matt 13:17; 1 peter 1:10-12). So even the least in the Kingdom of the new Covenant is greater than the greatest of the Old covenant, not because of themselves but because of Jesus whose blood is the blood(life)of the New Covenant (Matt 26:27)and those in the New Covenant partake in that life (John 6:53). Yet still the saints of the Old Covenant were saved by faith in the coming of the Messiah and the New Covenant. Look at John 1:12-13 in this context of being born of a woman or born of the Spirit. It is the the Spirit that give birth to eternal life in the New Covenant. Yes, the OT saints were saved by faith, but that was only realized after the crucifixion of Christ when the New Covenant in his blood was established. His Kingdom was established with the Ascension and all the references to his dominion are mentioned in Daniel 7:13,26-27; 22:69 Acts 7:56. It is the least in the Kingdom that are identified with Christ because they are in Christ and rule with Him as we see in Daniel 7:26-27, Matt 25:45 and various places in the book of Revelation. Matt 11:11 He is referring to his disciples in the Kingdom (Church) who are identified with Him and so greater than those of the OT who were identified with Moses (Romans 10:20). The Pharises were unwilling to stop identifying with Moses and start identifying with Jesus. That is a lot of what Romans and Hebrews is all about. John the Baptizer was the greatest of the OT saints becasue he share more fully than any of them in the Messiah's mission even though he died before its consumation on the cross. He was filled with the Holy Spirit even in his mother's womb in order to prepare him for his mission as the forerunner (Luke 1:15,41. Jesus contrasts the Old and New Covenants in various places such as the anaology of the Old and New Wineskins. He inaugurates His mission by changing water into wine. It is He who called it the New Covenant in Matt 26:28. Emmaus |

539 | Who is the "sinner" in this verse? | 2 Cor 2:5 | Emmaus | 132626
Biffbt, NAB footnote on 2 Cor 2:5-11 "The nature of the pain (2 Cor 2:5) is unclear, though some believe an individual at Corinth rejected Paul's authority, thereby scandalizing many in the community. In any case, action has been taken, and Paul judges the measuresa adequate to right the situation (2 Cor 2:6). The follow-up directives he now gives are entirely positive: forgive, encourage, love. Overwhelmed (2 Cor 2:7): a vivid metaphor (literally "swallowed") that Paul employs positively at 2 Cor 5:4 and in 1 Cor 15:54 (2 Cor 2:7). It is often used to describe satanic activity (cf 1 Peter 5:8); note the reference to Satan here in 2 Cor 2:11." http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/bible/2corinthians/2corinthians2.htm Emmaus |
