443 | "Laying on of Hands"? Heb. 6:1-2 | Heb 6:2 | Emmaus | 137950
beckyleigh, Here is one perspective on your question "The Old Testament suggests and the New Covenant reveals the creative action of the Son and the Spirit,(Cf. Ps 33:6; 104:30; Gen 1:2-3) inseparably one with that of the Father. This creative co-operation is clearly affirmed in the Church's rule of faith: "There exists but one God. . . he is the Father, God, the Creator, the author, the giver of order. He made all things by himself, that is, by his Word and by his Wisdom", "by the Son and the Spirit" who, so to speak, are "his hands".(St. Irenaeus, Adv. haeres. 2,30,9; 4,20,I: PG 7/1,822,1032.) Creation is the common work of the Holy Trinity. " "The hand ( as a symbol of the Holy Spirit). Jesus heals the sick and blesses little children by laying hands on them.(Mk 6:5; 8:23; 10:16) In his name the apostles will do the same. (Cf. Mk 16:18; Acts 5:12; 14:3) Even more pointedly, it is by the Apostles' imposition of hands that the Holy Spirit is given. (Cf. Acts 8:17-19; 13:3; 19:6) The Letter to the Hebrews lists the imposition of hands among the "fundamental elements" of its teaching. (Cf. Heb 6:2) The Church has kept this sign of the all-powerful outpouring of the Holy Spirit in its sacramental epicleses." "From that time on the apostles, in fulfillment of Christ's will, imparted to the newly baptized by the laying on of hands the gift of the Spirit that completes the grace of Baptism. For this reason in the Letter to the Hebrews the doctrine concerning Baptism and the laying on of hands is listed among the first elements of Christian instruction. The imposition of hands is rightly recognized by the Catholic tradition as the origin of the sacrament of Confirmation, which in a certain way perpetuates the grace of Pentecost in the Church."(cf. Acts 8:15-17; 19:5-6; Heb 6:2) "The essential rite of the sacrament follows. In the Latin rite, "the sacrament of Confirmation is conferred through the anointing with chrism on the forehead, which is done by the laying on of the hand, and through the words: 'Accipe signaculum doni Spiritus Sancti' [Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.]." In the Eastern Churches of Byzantine rite, after a prayer of epiclesis, the more significant parts of the body are anointed with myron: forehead, eyes, nose, ears, lips, chest, back, hands, and feet. Each anointing is accompanied by the formula SfragiV dwreaV PneumatoV Ā¢Agiou (Signaculum doni Spiritus Sancti): "the seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit."" "The word order in Roman antiquity designated an established civil body, especially a governing body. Ordinatio means incorporation into an ordo. In the Church there are established bodies which Tradition, not without a basis in Sacred Scripture,(Cf. Heb 5:6; 7:11; Ps 110:4) has since ancient times called taxeis (Greek) or ordines. And so the liturgy speaks of the ordo episcoporum, the ordo presbyterorum, the ordo diaconorum,. . . . " "Integration into one of these bodies in the Church was accomplished by a rite called ordinatio, a religious and liturgical act which was a consecration, a blessing or a sacrament. Today the word "ordination" is reserved for the sacramental act which integrates a man into the order of bishops, presbyters, or deacons, and goes beyond a simple election, designation, delegation, or institution by the community, for it confers a gift of the Holy Spirit that permits the exercise of a "sacred power" (sacra potestas) which can come only from Christ himself through his Church. Ordination is also called consecratio, for it is a setting apart and an investiture by Christ himself for his Church. The laying on of hands by the bishop, with the consecratory prayer, constitutes the visible sign of this ordination." Excerpts from The Catechism of the Catholic Church Emmaus |

447 | why would God allow his son to die fo us | 1 Cor 1:23 | Emmaus | 137811
Shael, Why God would sacrifice His sone is something that can only be grasped by the gift of faith, which apparently your friend at work does not have. pray that God grants her that gift. 1 Cor 1:22 For indeed Jews ask for signs and Greeks search for wisdom; 1 Cor 1:23 but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness, 1 Cor 1:24 but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 1 Cor 1:25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. What is more we can expect to be treated as was Jesus by the world. So, in a sense your friend is correct. God may not protect you any more than His Son except in eternal life and the resurrection. Matt 10:21 "Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. Matt 10:22 "You will be hated by all because of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved. Matt 10:23 "But whenever they persecute you in one city, flee to the next; for truly I say to you, you will not finish going through the cities of Israel until the Son of Man comes. Matt 10:24 "A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a slave above his master. This is known as The Scandal of the Cross. Emmaus |

No, Dagon was their god. Judges 16:23 The lords of the Philistines assembled to offer a great sacrifice to their god Dagon and to make merry. They said, "Our god has delivered into our power Samson our enemy." |

449 | where did the seven virtues come from? | 2 Pet 1:5 | Emmaus | 137632
I presume Searcher has answered your question. But if by chance you meant the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, they are found in Isaiah 11: 1-2 Wisdom Understanding Counsel Fortitude (courage) Knowledge Piety Fear of the Lord These are the gifts of the Spirit in the Messiah as prophesied by Isaiah. Other lists of various gifts are found in the letters of St. Paul. I have also seen others describe the first seven beatitudes in Matthew 5 as virtues. Emmaus |

450 | Pro-Life? Pro-Birth? Which? | Bible general Archive 2 | Emmaus | 137319
justme, Good to see you back again. On your question. I think to a certain extent the issues raised by the nun is a red herring. The Church is probably more active than most government in leading the way in providing services to the poor around the world. Could more be done? More can always be done and we must have follow up on pro life action. I would like to know who the nun was. Often the clergy or nuns who appear on these programs are dissenters who are actually "pro-choice" and couch their complaints in the manner you have described. This may or may not be the case with the particular nun you saw, but if it was I would not be surprised. Emmaus |

451 | Is the church is infallible? | 1 Tim 3:15 | Emmaus | 137118
Al, I would like to offer a little background history. I have been on this forum since November 2001 and have established friendships with a number of the other longtime members with whom you are interacting. If you search my archived posts you will see that we have even covered much of the same territory being covered now. During my time here, other posters, now gone, have made intemperate attacks on the Catholic Church. They were rebuked by the same people with whom you are interacting. The posting privileges of the abusers were revoked after abuse complaints, not by me but, by other Protestants on this site. Your will notice that one of the rules here is against pushing denominational biases and also against Arminan / Calvinist debates. This is an in house Protestant dispute. Some have been revoked because of violations of that rule. I hope you will post on threads other than Catholic / Protestant controversies since this is really a Bible Study Forum and there are many areas of interest in which we have common ground with our "separated brethren." This is a place for civil and charitable study of biblical questions. Making one's point and moving on without expecting agreement or conversion is important. Otherwise this site will become nothing but an endless debate forum. Charity and a broad interest in scriptural questions and study is essential to longevity on this Forum. I look forward to seeing your posts on other threads. Emmaus |

452 | can a pastor use it to annoint | Ex 30:22 | Emmaus | 137074
ssv.1, In my Church, part of the baptismal rite is the annointing of the person who, having been baptized into Christ, now shares in His offices of Priest, Prophet and King. The prayer of annointing is this: "God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ has freed you from sin, given you a new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, and welcomes you into his holy people. He now annoints you with the chrism of salvation. As Christ was annointed Priest, Prophet and King, so may you live always as a member of his body, sharing everlasting life." To which the congregation responds: "Amen!" Emmaus |

Junmeskie and msgzzz, I am Catholic and have been on this forum for three years. It is a Bible Study forum. It is not about pushing a particular agenda or getting in the face of others. Those who bash Catholics and the Catholic faith have had their privilege to post revoked. We are not here to have endless debate. Please respect the fact that all of us are guest here and the host organization is a Protestant company. They could make this a forum closed to Catholics if they wished. Curtsey toward the host's background is a minimal expectation. You are free to discuss scripture and to put forward the Catholic position on scripture so long as it is done courteously and with the understanding that your Catholic position may be debated or challenged. 455 | Significance of animals? | Gen 15:9 | Emmaus | 136642
Mommapbs, I have nothing to offer on the gender divisions. Howevere it is worthnoting that most of the animals sacrificed by the Israelites were worshiped as gods in Egypt. When Moses wanted to lead the Israelites into the desert to offer scrifice, Pharoah refused and suggested they sacrifice where they were in Egypt. Moses responded that the sacrifice the Israelites would make would be an abomination to the Egyptians. Why? Because they would be scrificing their gods. See Exodus 8:21-28 Ex 8:26 But Moses said, "It is not right to do so, for we will sacrifice to the LORD our God what is an abomination to the Egyptians. If we sacrifice what is an abomination to the Egyptians before their eyes, will they not then stone us? Emmaus |

Mommapbs, I believe the "smoking oven" and a "flaming torch" simply represent God's presence, just as the pillar of fire and the pillar of cloud do in Exodus. Smaller symbol for one man, Abraham, and lager scale for a whole nation, Israel. Emmaus |

460 | during the time of king Rehoboam | 1 Kin 12:15 | Emmaus | 136560
Read 1 Kings 11:29 thru 12:34. It was a punishment for Solomon's apostasy and idol worship. Rehoboam ignored the plea of the people and took bad advice rather than good advice, all according to God's design.
