3181 | Why have kids when... | Gen 1:22 | Emmaus | 53670
Andes, You may as well ask an Armenianist why they would have children if one of them might by free will choose etrnal damnation. If you don't want to get into the "unanswerable Calvinism Armenianism thing" why raise the question in that context? This topic makes me think of the secularists who say they wouldn't bring children into this terrible world. And they are the materially spoiled Americans speaking about the material world. One is tempted to ask them why they choose to stay in it themselves. Emmaus |

3182 | In the Andes, Law the only OT covenant? | Ex 20:10 | Emmaus | 53654
Andes, OT covenants would be the ones between God and Adam, God and Noah, God and Abraham, God and Moses, God and David. The New Covenant is between God and Jesus fulfilling all the old covenants. Those persons named being the Covenant mediators between God and man. The respective role of the mediators being Husband, Father, Chieftain, Judge, King, Royal High Priest. The respective Covenant forms being:Marriage, Household, Tribe, Nation, National Kingdom, the Church. The respective covenant signs being: Sabbath, Rainbow, Circumcision, Passover, Throne, the Eucharist(Holy Communion). In covenants each party binds themself personally to the other and each has obligations under the covenant. You would call this Covenant Law. Violating those obigations has consequences or curses attcahed to them. See Dueteronomy 27:9:-31:29 for a review of the blessing and curses of the Mosaic Covenant. You will notice that in every covenant between God and man that man always fails (with the exception of the God man Jesus)and God is always faithful. Emmaus |

3190 | Concerning the baptism topic.... | John 3:5 | Emmaus | 53187
stebert1, Those who believe in regenerative baptism hold that it is a sacrament that not only symbolizes something but actually effects the transmission of sanctifying grace, which is the very life of God within us. In this way we come to have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. It is the very scriptural citations to which you allude that cause them to hold such a position. To say that baptism is efficaious in tranmitting sanctifying grace does not limit God or restrict Him from dispensing his grace in any other way He pleases(i.e. Acts 11:44). It merely asserts that God has associated his grace with the sacrament of baptism as the ordinary means of its tranmission and entrance into the Body of Christ, the Church. Those who deny regenerative baptism say that the grace is already transmmitted by faith and that baptism is merely a public symbol of having received and accepted that grace. One position holds that scripture teaches that God can and does choose to work through his redeemed creation to transmit his grace and that this in fact displays God's glory and sanctifies his creation. The other position holds, according to their understanding of scripture, that the concept of baptismal regenration actually detracts from God's glory and limits his sovereignty because man and matter (i.e. the minister and the water)are involved in the administration of the sacrament. At least that is how I see the different positions. I hold the first, but find debates on the question rather fruitless. Emmaus |

3194 | Jephthah and the burnt offering? | Judges | Emmaus | 52757
Cyclist, I think the key to all the actions done by the people and even their Judges in the book of Judges is the contant refrain before and after each segment of the book: "And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord...In those days there was no king and everyone did what he thought best." So that even when the Lord raised up a Judge as an instrument of salvation, the Judge was seriously flawed. The Lord gave them kind of leaders and Judges they deserved. Emmaus |

3196 | Scandal of the Catholic Priesthood | Jude 1:4 | Emmaus | 52673
Jesusfreak, No one seems to have addressed the question you asked: "What do you think of the sermon?" It is awful blend of the awful truth, awful halftruth, and awful fantasy. I had a much higher opinion of John McAuthur before I read this sermon. There is no defense for the scandalous actions of some members of the Catholic clergy, so I will present none. What is happening must happen and is probably not over yet. On the other hand McArthur's "sermon" is not worthy of the name. He should have left it to the tabloids, they do it better. Emmaus |

3197 | What are the evidences of it, and how? | Matt 28:7 | Emmaus | 52451
Since you say you are new to the "understanding" rather than belief in Christ and you do not understand that Jesus is devine, is it accurate to say you are not a Christian, but rather a studying the Christian faith as an academic subject? Or are you seeking faith? Emmaus |

3198 | What are the evidences of it, and how? | Matt 28:7 | Emmaus | 52450
The primary evidence is the Resurrection and the complete change in the apostles and disciples after the Resurrection and Pentecost. Before the Resurrection they were frightened and in hiding. Afterwards they were fearless and willing to die proclaiming the gospel of Jesus rather than deny him. No other founding religious figure in the world before or since has claimed divinity for himself or has risen from the dead. Emmaus |

3200 | Why the question in John 1:25? | Deut 18:15 | Emmaus | 52335
Motherphilo Among the Jews, Moses and Elijah were considered the two great prophets. Moses is referred to as "the Prophet." But based on Deut 18:15 and following the Jews of Jesus' day expected the Messiah to be a great prohet on the same level as Moses and Elijah, representing the Law and Prophecy. You can see many places in the Gospels, especially Matthew and John, but especially in Matthew where the actions of Jesus are parrallel to the actions and events in the live of Moses (death as birth sought by a king, exile, teaching God's revelation on a mountain , etc.)and Jesus' miracles surpassed even the miracles of Elijah. But Jesus himself indicated that John, repesenting Prophecy, had come in the spirit of Elijah (Matt 11:14; 17:11f; Mark 19:12f, although some thought Jesus was Elijah returmed (Matt 16:14 and elswhere). Moses and Elijah representing the Law and the Prohets are witnesses to the glorification of Jesus in the Transfiguration on a mountain just as Moses and Elijah experienced God on Sinai and Horeb. As for the connection with baptism think of the typology of the crossing of the Red sea with baptism as a parallel between Moses and Jesus. Emmaus |
