304 | Alms Giving, Fasting, and Praying | Matt 6:1 | Emmaus | 145546
Doc, Your conclusion about prayer, fasting and almsgiving relating to God, self and others is exactly the same at the Catechism of the Catholic Church. This is the constant teachinhg of the Church from the earliest Church Fathers and derived from Scripture, especially Matt 6"1-18. They are also found together in Tobit 12:8: "Prayer and fasting are good, but better than either is almsgiving accompanied by righteousness." You may find these footnotes on Matt 6 from the NAB of interest. "1 [1-18] The sermon continues with a warning against doing good in order to be seen and gives three examples, almsgiving (Matthew 6:2-4), prayer (Matthew 6:5-15), and fasting (Matthew 6:16-18). In each, the conduct of the hypocrites (Matthew 6:2 ) is contrasted with that demanded of the disciples. The sayings about reward found here and elsewhere (Matthew 5:12 , 46; 10:41-42) show that this is a genuine element of Christian moral exhortation. Possibly to underline the difference between the Christian idea of reward and that of the hypocrites, the evangelist uses two different Greek verbs to express the rewarding of the disciples and that of the hypocrites; in the latter case it is the verb apecho, a commercial term for giving a receipt for what has been paid in full (Matthew 6:2, 16 ). 2 [2] The hypocrites: the scribes and Pharisees, see Matthew 23:13 , 23 , 27 , 29 . The designation reflects an attitude resulting not only from the controversies at the time of Jesus' ministry but from the opposition between Pharisaic Judaism and the church of Matthew. They have received their reward: they desire praise and have received what they were looking for. 12 [16] The only fast prescribed in the Mosaic law was that of the Day of Atonement (Lev 16:31but the practice of regular fasting was common in later Judaism; cf Didache Matthew 9:1." http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/bible/matthew/matthew6.htm Emmaus |

T'oma, I do not have it, but my father did when I was growing up. I browsed it back then. I do have his Dictionary of the Bible which came out in 1965 and is still in print from Touchstone, a division of Simon and Schuster. McKenzie was one of the leading Catholic Scriptures scholar in the U.S. in the 40's, 50's and 60's. The Two Edged Sword published in 1956 established his reputation. Another of his books, The Power and the Wisdom, about the New Testament was published some years later. Emmaus Emmaus |

T'oma Men and women who belong to catholic religious orders usually have initials after their names which are abbreviations indicating the name of their particular order. S.J. stands for "Society of Jesus", the formal name of a relgious order of men more commonly known as The Jesuits. I was educated in one on their High Schools in Washington D.C., the same one attended by Patrick Bucahnan and William Bennett. The order was founded in the 16th century by St. Ignatius of Loyola, a Basque soldier who, while recuperating from an battle wound caused by cannon fire while fighting in the Spanish army, underwent a profound conversion experience. Here are a few links related to the order. http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/14081a.htm http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/07639c.htm What is the title of the book you have aquired and the author's name? 308 | How did Luke meet Christ, where in Bible | NT general Archive 1 | Emmaus | 145358
There is nothing in the Bible to indicate Luke ever met Jesus. The opening of his Gospel indicates he spoke to many people who di know Jesus, but they are not named.

314 | See through Stephen's vision? | Acts 7:55 | Emmaus | 145031
iktoose, I presume you meant to say Stephen, not Jesus, died just after Stephen saw Jesus in Glory. How luke came to know this is that Paul (Saul) was presented and witnessed and "approved" the stoning of Stephen. Luke later became one of Paul's companions in his missionary journeys. Acts 8:1 Saul was in hearty agreement with putting him to death. And on that day a great persecution began against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. Acts 8:2 Some devout men buried Stephen, and made loud lamentation over him. Acts 8:3 But Saul began ravaging the church, entering house after house, and dragging off men and women, he would put them in prison. Emmaus |

315 | One born of God cannot sin? | 1 John 3:9 | Emmaus | 144976
CDBJ, Apology accepted. My issue was not about the sin nature aspect of your post, but rather with the argument about the significance of the first breath, because that is one of the main arguments used to justify abortion right up to partial birth abortion as a child is being delivered. Life first, theological disputes a very distant second if not further down the list. Emmaus |

316 | One born of God cannot sin? | 1 John 3:9 | Emmaus | 144931
CDBJ, A child who has just been born and started to breathe through its lungs , rather than through its blood, is still dependent upon its mother or father or someone to ustain its life. An infant cannot feed, shelter or clothe itself. It must be protected and fed even by breat or hand feeding. The concept of the independent infant, thereby making it a real human being, is absurd. 317 | Why does Paul defend his apostleship? | Acts | Emmaus | 144898
Jdavisodum, "Paul seem to defend his self about him being an apostle and being a christian in general. why does he do this?" Because Paul was suspect in some quarters because of his history of persecuting the Church and killing Christians. The Ignatius Catholic Study Bible Introduction to Acts makes some interesting points about your question. The final part of the introduction overview speaks about some features of Acts that appeared to be an apologetic defense of Paul's ministry against his detractors who were trying to undermine his unique status as a post Resurrection Apostle, who rather than helping to establish the Church had actually persecuted it. 2Cor 11:4-6;12:11; Gal 6:12. Luke establishes Paul's credentials by comparing him to Peter in these ways: Both delivered inaugural sermons focusing on the Davidic Covenant. 2:22-36; 13:26-41 Both appealed to Psalm 16 in relation to the Resurrection. 2:25-28; 13:35 Both healed cripples. 3:1-10; 14:8-10 Both filled with the Holy Spirit. 4:8; 13:9 Both were renowned for extraordinary miracles. 5:15-16; 19:11-12 Both conferred the Holy Spirit by the laying on of hands. 8:14-17; 19:6 Both confront and rebuke a magician. 8:18-24; 13:6-11 Both raise the dead. 9:36-41; 20:9-12 Both refuse divine worship. 10:25-26; 14:11-15 Both delivered from prison miraculously. 12:6-11; 16:25-34 Paul also called by Jesus. 9:1-19; 22:3-16; 26:2-18 So demonstrating by parallels that Peter and Paul had the same preaching, the same power and the same protection. 318 | Pls help again.. Thanks.. | 1 Kin 11:11 | Emmaus | 144771
Why this happened is explained in 1 Kings 11 and 12. It was Solomon's idoloatry. The two kingdoms were never reunited. The split came about 930 BC. The Northern Kingdom, Israel was destroyed by the Assyrians and comes to an end about 722 B.C. (2 Kings 17).The Southern Kingdom, Judah, lasts until the Babylonian Exile in 587 B.C. (2 Kings 24:18-25, 30).
