3003 | two main sections of pauls letters | 2 Tim 2:15 | BradK | 218903
Hello Christi, Here's some general advice intended to help you:-) It's always best if we study, and do the leg work on our own. We learn more that way! I'd assume you've read Paul's epistles? For instance, you'll note, Romans and Ephesians. Both have a "doctrinal section" and a "practical section". Read, and re- read and meditiate on these (Ephesians being the shorter book) and see if you can't pick out where this occurs. Hopefully this will provide you a little framework to prepare for your discussion group. Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

3007 | who was gallio and nero? | 2 Tim 2:15 | BradK | 218956
Hello byost01, Welcome to the Forum. I'm not completely certain from the wording of your questions? Nero is not mentioned in the Bible- except as noted by Eastons "...occurs only in the superscription (which is probably spurious, and is altogether omitted in the R.V.) to the Second Epistle to Timothy." Gallio is the elder brother of Seneca, the philosopher. As noted in Easton's Bible Dictionary, "who was tutor and for some time minister of the emperor Nero. He was “deputy”, i.e., proconsul, as in Revised Version, of Achaia, under the emperor Claudius, when Paul visited Corinth (Acts 18:12). The word used here by Luke in describing the rank of Gallio shows his accuracy. Achaia was a senatorial province under Claudius, and the governor of such a province was called a “proconsul.” He is spoken of by his contemporaries as “sweet Gallio,” and is described as a most popular and affectionate man. When the Jews brought Paul before his tribunal on the charge of persuading “men to worship God contrary to the law” (18:13), he refused to listen to them, and “drave them from the judgment seat” (18:16)." I hope this helps, BradK |

3011 | what's the hint or Revelation? | 2 Tim 2:15 | BradK | 219396
Hello soberxp, Welcome to the Forum. I'm not sure what to say other than, No, I do not believe your stories! They are highly subjective in nature and cannot be verified as truth! They don't line up with scripture! They sound more like mystical experiences- maybe even drug-induced? This is a Study Bible Forum. The God of the Bible speaks to us through His Word (Heb 4:12) not, bizarre imagery or hallucinations! I don't know what the hint or revelation is, but I assure you Rev. 1:19 has nothing to do with it. Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

3016 | Immune to poison if my faith is true? | 2 Tim 2:15 | BradK | 219785
Hello faithfulwondering, Great question! The most important thing to consider in interpreting this passage (or any other for that matter) is context! Who is being addressed and what is being spoken about. In this context, the disciples are the ones being addressed (16:14). So, the question to ask is this: Is this prescriptve of something to be applied to all believers for all time or is this descriptive (and specific)? To whom does "them" refer? I would offer it's simply descriptive of the powers given them to authenticate that they truly were disciples of the Messiah. If this truly were to apply to us (for all time), then in context, one would have all the miracles described in vs. 17 and 18, not pick and chose as so many do. Not recommended, but you could certainly "test your faith", take a poison and let us know the result:-) Additionally, some of the earliest manuscripts do not include 16:9-20 and end with 16:8! I'd be careful about developing doctrines from questionable or even isolated passages! Ask yourself, 'does this teaching square with the rest of scripture'? Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |
