101 | Hosea and the significance of three | OT general | Bill Richardson | 231045
The most powerful example showing significence of three days, at least in my mind, is that of Christ spending "three days in the heart of the earth" as He compared this to that of Jonah. Matt 12:38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.” 39 But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here. 42 The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here. Man lusts for signs and miracles but Jesus was disappointed in the immaturity of these people. He wanted them to grow up and recognize all the signs and miracles He had already performed and accept Him as God as we do in this timeframe. As He said, Jesus' most powerful miracle would be His own Ressurection. Yes, there had been people in the past who had been raised from the dead but this was a first. No one had ever raised Himself from the dead as cited in... Col 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. 18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. This event was absolutely unique in the entire History of the World. And of course it is one of the principle foundations of our faith as described in... 1 Cor 15:12 Now if Christ is preached that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen. 14 And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty. 15 Yes, and we are found false witnesses of God, because we have testified of God that He raised up Christ, whom He did not raise up—if in fact the dead do not rise. 16 For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen. 17 And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins! 18 Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable. 102 | bible verse- don't go to bed naked | Bible general Archive 4 | Bill Richardson | 231044
The only thing of which I can think that might lead one to such a conclusion was the incident with Noah and his son, Ham. The story is provided in Gen 9. A person could possibly blame Noah but ultimately that is for God to decide. Would we want to take a chance and sleep naked and wake up with those kind of consequences? Tough question; one I would choose to avoid. Go with God in all things, Bill |

104 | OT Parallels | Bible general Archive 4 | Bill Richardson | 231042
One of the more famous "foreshadows" from the OT was depicted by Noah and his family in his ark, comparing the church, not of the world but in the world of sin. Notice the one single entrance, and the one single avenue of getting information through the window. Of what does this remind you? The animals all inside getting along with each other. The water outside (sin) trying to break into the inside with the rain falling down imitating the worries of the world. The pitch in between the boards of lumber keeping the boat together just like Christ keeps us together with His Prayer of Unity. Yes, many parallels. Then there's Moses rescuing the nation of Israel from Egypt just like Christ rescues us from the world of sin. Moses even intervened and prevented God from destroying that same nation just like Jesus is our Advocate for us to God's Judgment Bar of Perfect Justice. Ad lib: "Father, he/she is one of Mine; they're good to go into Heaven." The blessing of Jacob instead of Esau was from God from the very beginning of his life, before Jacob left the womb. Jacob finally got the point in blessing Joseph's second son instead of his first. Just like we see from God in... 1 Cor 3:18 Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their own craftiness”; 20 and again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.” 21 Therefore let no one boast in men. Who would have ever thought of a Perfect Leader of all mankind to be born in a manger (cattle feed bin) and then sentenced in a mockery of a trial and executed in man's most painful and wicked way to die? God did; in His Way of turning the world's thinking on its ear. Jesus said it best in... Luke 22:25 And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’ 26 But not so among you; on the contrary, he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves. 27 For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet I am among you as the One who serves. But in answer to your basic question, I know of no such "Chart of OT Parallels." The comparisons above are some of those I've heard all my life in various sermons. You might search the Internet for a book or an article on such a topic. Go with God in all things, Bill |

105 | How do you help a controlling person? | Bible general Archive 4 | Bill Richardson | 231041
I can only think of an old suggestion given to me many years ago by a good friend. He noticed and told me that I tend to be a controlling type person. I admitted it to him, in confidence, don't you know. Then he became one of my best friends by saying this, (he got it from an E-Mail): "If you're hooked on being the pilot in your life, move over!!" Yeah, caught me by surprise, you bet. All I could do was shut my mouth and that's tough for me. If we want our lives to go well; if we really want closer and better relationships with those that really mean a lot to us, we need to give up the wheel and settle for being the co-pilot. We need to give up being "first fiddle" and settle for second place. An addiction to anything in our lives, including our being in control is just another idol in between us and our God and can very well keep such a person out of Heaven forever. If that doesn't shake up your friend, I don't have a clue as to what else would do it. Just plant the seed, tell 'em you love him/her and that you'll continue praying for them. And then let God do the rest, including the humbling of their heart. Don't forget about them or give up on them; check 'em every once in a while. Ja 5:13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. 19 Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, 20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins. and Prov 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall. 19 Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, Than to divide the spoil with the proud. 106 | Just asking a simple question. | Bible general Archive 4 | Bill Richardson | 231040
The church is quite simply the Bride of Christ, Kingdom of Heaven, Matt 25 or His Body, Rom 12, consisting of those who believe and obey Him as Lord and Saviour of their lives, Matt 28. The Bible, Matt 25 also descibes such a group of people as sheep as opposed to goats who are the unbelievers. Then we're also described as "living stones and a spiritual house" in 1 Pet 2:5. In verse 9, Peter refers to us as a "chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people." All these names for the church merely describes the many different features or characteristics of this group. We're a kingdom because Christ is our King whereas we're His sheep because He's our Shepard. Similar images can be drawn from all the names cited above and I've probably left out a few more from His Word. The most important feature to the world is our only difference from them. ALL human beings are sinners; the big difference is as obedient believers, we're saved from our sins whereas the disobedient believers like the demons are already sentenced forever to eternal damnation, James 2:19. Now some object to becoming part of the church, saying "There may be hypocrites in our midst." But notice one doesn't get out of the life-saving boat in the ocean because of the chance of two-faced people in that same boat. We're just grateful for the salvation from drowning. We should think similarly and re-read Jesus' story of the wheat and the tares. Matt 13:24 Another parable He put forth to them, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field; 25 but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way. 26 But when the grain had sprouted and produced a crop, then the tares also appeared. 27 So the servants of the owner came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?’ 28 He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ The servants said to him, ‘Do you want us then to go and gather them up?’ 29 But he said, ‘No, lest while you gather up the tares you also uproot the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn.”’” Go with God in all things, Bill |

107 | Why did the Nation of Israel perish? | Bible general Archive 4 | Bill Richardson | 231039
In the sense that Jews can no longer trace their family lineage to Abraham and God no longer accepts their sacrifices, the Jewish nation no longer exists. This was all predicted by Jesus in Matt 24 and fulfilled on or about 70AD. This destruction is described in great detail at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Destruction_of_Jerusalem#Destruction_of_Jerusalem Yes, true enough in 1947 after the ending of WWII, the world Governments convened and decided to re-establish the nation of Israel. But it's not quite the same as cited above, as they no longer have that very special relationship with God as provided during the Law of Moses in the OT. Heb 10:1 For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect. 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins. 3 But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. 4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins. 16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,” 17 then He adds, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” 18 Now where there is remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin. But also please understand the Blessings from God to Abraham did include the world's Greatest Blessing and that was the Life Saving Sacrifice from God's Own Son. This too was part of God's Promise He made to Abraham and renewed to Isaac and Jacob. I'm convinced all of this was in the Mind of God from the beginning in Genesis 3. 108 | what is a just weight in the Bible? | Bible general Archive 4 | Bill Richardson | 231038
The abuse of this system of weighing products for the Jewish people (and their sacrifices) is only part of what made Jesus so angry in "cleansing the temple." It's a great story; one of the few described in all four Gospels. Go with God in all things, Bill |

I can only respond with scripture. Matt 7:21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ Go with God in all things, Bill |

112 | Law suite | Bible general Archive 4 | Bill Richardson | 231034
Since you haven't responded with any details as Brad requested, I can only think to refer you to Paul's Guidance in 1 Cor 6. The most powerful and challenging verse to live up to is... 1 Cor 6:7 Now therefore, it is already an utter failure for you that you go to law against one another. Why do you not rather accept wrong? Why do you not rather let yourselves be cheated? The most important item to remember is to NOT embarrass the church or make our Saviour ashamed of our behavior, especially in front of the sinful world. Now true enough, you could bring the matter to those wise and mature in your congregation to make such decisions. But it doesn't do the church any good to "air our dirty laundry" in front of the world and bring shame and reproach on His Bride. I know this is tough to do as I've been there but it's better than the alternative. Go with God in all things, Bill |

114 | Prophecies in Isaiah | OT general | Bill Richardson | 231031
In my mind, the most powerful purpopse of some of the prophecies was to show the coming of Christ, God's Son. But of course, to the Israelite people some of these prophecies were somewhat an enigma. Here Jesus used this OT prophecy, from Psalm 110 to confound the Pharisees... Matt 22:41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?” They said to Him, “The Son of David.” 43 He said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying: 44 ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool”’? 45 If David then calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his Son?” 46 And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor from that day on did anyone dare question Him anymore. Then some few prophecies are plain and simple like... Mic 5:2 “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting.” and fulfilled in Matt 2:6. I believe there are over 300 prophecies in the OT foretelling the coming of Christ and ALL of them are fulfilled in the NT, thus proving the Bible to be what it claims to be, the Word of God. 115 | Do sinners have at least some guilt. | OT general | Bill Richardson | 231030
I'm in absolute and full agreement with that. Only Jesus could provide the Perfect Sacrifice and His Blood to pay for our's, you, me and the rest of the world. As you've alluded, God's Absolute Sense of Complete Justice Demands that someone pay for our sins and that Someone is our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Rom 2:12 For as many as have sinned without law will also perish without law, and as many as have sinned in the law will be judged by the law 13 (for not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified; Rom 5:16 And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification. As always, Go with God in all things. Bill |

116 | Do sinners have at least some guilt. | OT general | Bill Richardson | 231028
From http://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/417253/jewish/Jewish-Guilt.htm "Jewish guilt" entered American literature half a century ago, and dozens of Woody Allen movies and Bernard Malamud novels later, the idea evokes a caricature of neurotic self-absorption: the Jewish father who, sixty years later, still blames all his son's failings on the fact that he couldn't afford the bicycle his kid wanted for his seventh birthday; the Jewish mother who's convinced that her failure to impress the shul president's wife marked her family as social outcasts for all generations; the Jewish rabbi who believes that all the world's troubles are caused by his own sins. Quite a self-centered, dismal and pessimistic view of the universe. In truth, it is a self-centered view, but in the most positive sense of the word. And rather than dismal and pessimistic, it is the most encouraging and optimistic perspective of reality in the history of human thought. Think about it: the notion that we, as creatures of choice, are responsible for all that occurs within our domain also implies that we do have control over what happens there, that our choices and actions do make a difference. The notion that even though my choices and actions overlap only a miniscule area of another person's life, and an even smaller area of human history, what I choose and do will profoundly influence the fate of the guy dancing on my roof, the achievements of the community of which I am a part, and the course of humanity's progress through time. What I choose and do will even make the difference between death and life, between failure and success. Of course this is the modern view from this website. But from God's Word, I would go to one of the best examples, King David in his prayer of repentance... Ps 51:1 Have mercy upon me, O God, According to Your lovingkindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, Blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I acknowledge my transgressions, And my sin is always before me. 4 Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight— That You may be found just when You speak, And blameless when You judge. We can always go to the least of anyone in a given race of people and their way of reacting to God and His Word. But don't you agree, we need to visualize the best in our world as was recognized about David in... Acts 13: 22 And when He had removed him, He raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.’ All human beings need to have a contrite heart as did David after sinning, indicating their repentance. There's good and bad in all people throughout all time. But we do need to be understanding and compassionate toward those who are a little slow about responding to God as they should. Our job is to be responsible for our own behavior. Now there's a few other major characters of whom I can think, in the OT indicating their desire to repent: Samson, Josiah, Ezra and Nehemiah. You can look up their stories and see for yourself. Go with God in all things, Bill |

I apologize as I goofed. Quoted from previous post: "God the Father was the Dominent Figure during the Patriarchal Age, Genesis thru Abraham with the Law of Moses during the Jewish Age thru Malachi." I should have cited as follows: Dominent Figure during the Patriarchal Age, Genesis thru Jacob. I forgot about the fact that the Law of Moses was not instituted until Mount Siani. 118 | is jesus god? | Col 1:18 | Bill Richardson | 231023
It's helpful to understand there's been three major Dispensations in the Bible. What is a dispensation, you ask? From BibleGateway: Dispensation (Gr. oikonomia, "management," "economy"). The method or scheme according to which God carries out his purposes towards men is called a dispensation. There are usually reckoned three dispensations, the Patriarchal, the Mosaic or Jewish, and the Christian. (See COVENANT, Administration of.) These were so many stages in God's unfolding of his purpose of grace toward men. God the Father was the Dominent Figure during the Patriarchal Age, Genesis thru Abraham with the Law of Moses during the Jewish Age thru Malachi. Jesus the Son, of course started the Christian Age with the assistance of the Holy Spirit, Matthew thru Revelation. So you see all three of the Godhead did participate in the Creation as evidenced in Genesis with the use of "We" in the first chapter. So naturally, Jesus did Know and Hear all of what went on in the Garden of Eden; He just didn't show Himself like His Father did. But as you've already made clear Christ gets all the preeminence in this Dispensation, as given to Him by His Father. So is it a teamwork thing? Not sure; I'd like to think so as Jesus prays in John 17. And you make a good point when the disciples saw Jesus, they saw the Father, John 14:9. BUT another powerful point proving the distinction of the two separate Beings is the fact that no man can see God the Father and live. Ex 33:17 So the Lord said to Moses, “I will also do this thing that you have spoken; for you have found grace in My sight, and I know you by name.” 18 And he said, “Please, show me Your glory.” 19 Then He said, “I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” 20 But He said, “You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live.” 21 And the Lord said, “Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock. 22 So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by. 23 Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall not be seen.” One must read all of what God has to say on this matter to gain a full understanding of this Trinity along with the separateness of the Godhead. Keep studying; you'll get it. Go with God in all things, Bill |

119 | is jesus god? | Col 1:18 | Bill Richardson | 231020
I can understand your difficulty; there are many people that believe as you do. But the ultimate conclusion, at least in my mind must agree with the whole Bible, as Paul preached in... Acts 20:17 From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called for the elders of the church. 18 And when they had come to him, he said to them: “You know, from the first day that I came to Asia, in what manner I always lived among you, 19 serving the Lord with all humility, with many tears and trials which happened to me by the plotting of the Jews; 20 how I kept back nothing that was helpful, but proclaimed it to you, and taught you publicly and from house to house, 21 testifying to Jews, and also to Greeks, repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 For I have not shunned to declare to you the whole counsel of God. So how does one rationalize all the scriptures you've cited with the ones I provided in my previous post? Yes a very challenging question indeed. One last bit of scripture and I'll hush. 1 Cor 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints. Go with God in all things, trust Him, keep studying and He'll Bless you with the Answer. Bill |

120 | is jesus god? | Col 1:18 | Bill Richardson | 231017
In addition to your scriptures as cited, I can only think to add these in an attempt to complete the picture: Jn 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. 32 And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. 33 I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.” Jn 17:20 “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; 21 that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22 And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: 23 I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me. All of this leads us to the conclusion that there really is a concept known as the Trinity. No, the word itself is not in the Bible but the picture certainly is. All Three of the Godhead, God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit are all in Perfect Unity. BUT they're also three distinct Beings as shown in... Lk 3:22 And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.” No we can't understand this Perfect Oneness yet in three distinct Beings; we just have to accept it. So in answer to your question, yes indeed, Jesus most certainly was then, still is and always will be God. Go with God in all things, Bill |
