221 | who should speak in tounges? | 1 Cor 14:22 | Aspiring Overseer | 96538
Satan is your answer, but let me explain. Assertions do not prove anything. Just because many people assert they speak in tongues does not mean they actually do. People do strange things, usually without reason, and that is why we have adages like, "Common sense is uncommon". That is also why Christ stated that few would find salvation. It is unfortunate, but most people do not follow reason, but emotion. The promise of tongues is one such example. Matt 7:13-14 13"Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide, and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter by it. 14"For the gate is small, and the way is narrow that leads to life, and few are those who find it. 222 | who should speak in tounges? | 1 Cor 14:22 | Aspiring Overseer | 96580
Mark 3:20-30 20And He came home, and the multitude gathered again, to such an extent that they could not even eat a meal. 21And when His own people heard of this, they went out to take custody of Him; for they were saying, "He has lost His senses." 22And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying, "He is possessed by Beelzebul," and "He casts out the demons by the ruler of the demons." 23And He called them to Himself and began speaking to them in parables, "How can Satan cast out Satan? 24"And if a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25"And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. 26"And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but he is finished! 27"But no one can enter the strong man's house and plunder his property unless he first binds the strong man, and then he will plunder his house. 28"Truly I say to you, all sins shall be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they utter; 29but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin "-- 30because they were saying, "He has an unclean spirit." NAS Speaking against tongues in the first century is one thing, but in the 21st century we have a totally different matter. Remember that a kingdom divided against itself can not stand. A person can not have it both ways and expect they are in the proper kingdom. AO |

223 | who should speak in tounges? | 1 Cor 14:22 | Aspiring Overseer | 96688
Christians are of the same mind whether in the 1st century or today. You can not have a practise of speaking in tongues accepted by some and not by others and yet still embrace each other as members of the Lord's body. 1 Cor 13:7-10 8Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 9For we know in part, and we prophesy in part; 10but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. NAS The partial has been done away. AO |

224 | who should speak in tounges? | 1 Cor 14:22 | Aspiring Overseer | 96703
You wrote, "I know there are lots of people on this forum that don't believe in the gifts and say the(y) ceased But I don't think they say in now-a-days they come from Satan." Are those people who say, "the gifts have ceased", true Christians, in your opinion? If so, who has the proper understanding of God's word? Tongues must either exist or not exist, both positions can not be true. Do you think that those in the body of Christ can serve God following different paths? Does their understanding of God's master plan need to be the same on all points or only a few? Is understanding God's word even necessary? Ps 49:20-50:1 20Man in his pomp, yet without understanding, Is like the beasts that perish. NAS Man without understanding will spiritually die. Hos 4:6 6My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being My priest. Since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. NAS Even God's priests, who once knew the commandments of God, but had rejected them, perished. Hos 6:6 6For I delight in loyalty rather than sacrifice, And in the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings. NAS Loyalty to God is more important than sacrifice and knowledge of God more important than offerings. Does not Jesus confirm this? Mark 12:32-33 33and to love Him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as himself, is much more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices. NAS Is loving (obeying) God with ALL understanding a prerequisite to Christianity or will partial understanding do? Would you rather rest on partial or full; now or later? If you believe you are secure in Christ, then you must believe those who do not understand God, are not. Or does it not matter how we worship God? AO |

225 | I won"t be saved if I don't tithe | 2 Corinthians | Aspiring Overseer | 63329
Do not worry as Christians are not commanded to tithe. Unless you are a practicing Jew, your sole obligation in this regard is to put aside and save, as you may prosper (1 Co 16:2). Keep praying for guidance and God will be faithful. AO |

226 | WHAT IS MEANT IN VERSES IN 2COR.4:7-9? | 2 Cor 4:9 | Aspiring Overseer | 68264
Paul stresses the earthly body of a Christian is inconsequential to the spiritual. He also highlights that a Christian's effectiveness as a teacher will not be attributed to their physical situation, but to the singular greatness of God's master plan. In no way could anyone say that Paul, or any of the evangelists, were persausive due to a lack of worldly concerns. Rather, they were persausive, because of their preaching of God's word, in spite of these concerns. Thus the power of God's word stood on its own merit. In fact, Christians are likely to suffer more difficulties than non-christians as God prepares them to be experienced teachers. AO |

227 | Should women be allowed to preach? | Galatians | Aspiring Overseer | 50215
Grace, You have been given these verses, previously, but with considerable effort to twist their meaning to conform to the world's standard. Try reading these is context (I have included most, but not all) and pray for guidance. 1. Women are not to speak in worship: 1 Cor 14:34-35 34Let the women keep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak, but let them subject themselves, just as the Law also says. 35And if they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is improper for a woman to speak in church. NAS 2. Women may teach women, but not men. 1 Tim 2:11-15 11Let a woman quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness. 12But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. 13For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve. 14And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being quite deceived, fell into transgression. 15But women shall be preserved through the bearing of children if they continue in faith and love and sanctity with self-restraint. 231 | Fruit vs. Works: the same or different? | Gal 5:22 | Aspiring Overseer | 129844

232 | Fruit vs. Works: the same or different? | Gal 5:22 | Aspiring Overseer | 129888
Hi Karen, Thank you for your quick response. Is God then unjust? John 15:1-2 15:1"I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2"Every branch in Me (in Christ) that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes (disciplines) it, that it may bear more fruit. If people wish to be part of the "true vine" must they not be "in Christ"; that is to be covered by the atoning sacrifice of His blood? Why does John 15 tell us that some of those very people, who were in the "true vine"; those branches already "in Christ"; were taken away? These branches (Christians) were "in Christ" (i.e. saved and having full knowledge of the goodness of God) yet they did not bear fruit and thus lost their salvation! Why did they bear no fruit? Was not God able to perform all the works necessary in them? John 15:8-10 15:8 "By this is My Father glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples. 9 "Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love. 10 "If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father's commandments, and abide in His love. NAS Should not Christians put forth the effort to prove themselves as Christ’s disciples just as Christ put forth the effort to obey God the Father? AO |

235 | catholic and protestant salvation view | Eph 4:3 | Aspiring Overseer | 49195

236 | catholic and protestant salvation view | Eph 4:3 | Aspiring Overseer | 49271
Consider these verses and the concepts they discuss regarding the Bible: 2 Peter 1:16-21 16For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such an utterance as this was made to Him by the Majestic Glory, "This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased"-- 18and we ourselves heard this utterance made from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. 19And so we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts. 20But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, 21for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. NAS Scripture is not a mater of one's own interpretation. It is what it is! Gal 1:11-12 11For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. 12For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. NAS Paul was taught directly by Christ and Christians are to follow Paul as he followed Christ. Did Paul support any denomination, either Catholic or Protestant? John 12:44-13:1 44And Jesus cried out and said, "He who believes in Me does not believe in Me, but in Him who sent Me. 45"And he who beholds Me beholds the One who sent Me. 46"I have come as light into the world, that everyone who believes in Me may not remain in darkness. 47"And if anyone hears My sayings, and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. 48"He who rejects Me, and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day. 49"For I did not speak on My own initiative, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me commandment, what to say, and what to speak. 50"And I know that His commandment is eternal life; therefore the things I speak, I speak just as the Father has told Me." NAS Jesus spoke only what God the Father gave Him. Paul instructed only as Christ instructed him. Phil 1:27-28 27Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ; so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; 28in no way alarmed by your opponents-- which is a sign of destruction for them, but of salvation for you, and that too, from God. NAS Paul instructed the Christians of that age, Christians who in some cases had actually seen Jesus, that they should be of the same mind. Where does Paul, or any Old or New Testament writer authorize the choice of chosing the denomination of your choice? Where do denominations come from? Jesus said that a kingdom divided against itself is laid waste. He also prayed for unity for His diciples. Paul also instructed at great length not to be divided: 1 Cor 1:10 10Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree, and there be no divisions among you, but you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment. NAS Keep praying for guidance in understanding scripture and continue to be skeptical. Ninety nine percent of what you see and hear regarding Christianity is taken out of context and made to fit our mainstream, personal viewpoint. |

238 | denominations. | Eph 4:3 | Aspiring Overseer | 148784
Ed, Consider these verses and the underlying concepts with respect to denominations: 1 Cor 14:30-33 31For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all may be exhorted; 32and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets; 33for God is not a God of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints. NAS God is a logical being, not a promoter of confusion (v. 33). 2 Peter 1:20-21 20But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, 21for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. NAS Scripture is not a mater of one's own interpretation. It is what it is! We must read and understand scripture literally without regard to our current social norms. It must make sense and have but one meaning! Paul specifically rebuked Christians who sought to form denominations as noted in 1 Cor 1:13. There was no difference of opinion between God the Father and Jesus, as there was no difference of opinion between Jesus and Paul. NAS Paul instructed the Christians of that age; Christians who in some cases had actually seen Jesus, that they should be of the same mind. Where does Paul, or any Old or New Testament writer authorize the choice of choosing the denomination of your choice? Did God later authorize this practice? Jesus said that a kingdom divided against itself is laid waste. He also prayed for unity for His disciples. Paul also instructed Christians at great length not to be divided in spiritual matters: 1 Cor 1:10 10Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree, and there be no divisions among you, but you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment. NAS We must conclude that denominations did not originate from God. Let’s continue to ask God for the truth; reasoning with one another; and God will be faithful. AO |

239 | denominations. | Eph 4:3 | Aspiring Overseer | 148899
Hi Tim, I understand your opinion that this refers to the validity of the original penned words. My comment, however, remains that these words are not subject to interpretation by Christians. As all Christians have the gift of the HS, their teaching of Scripture is prophetic and of one accord, just as Peter’s. There can not be differing viewpoints, as the Holy Spirit's purpose is not to cause confusion or division, but to clarify and strengthen. Thus 2 Pe 1:20 merely states the obvious that his teaching of Scripture, like any mature Christian's, is not a matter of his opinion, but from God (thus, pay attention!). Obviously, non-Christians are free to interpret as they like and consequently we have a great number of differing opinions (i.e. denominations). AO |
