5 | need commentary and bible dictionary | Bible general Archive 2 | 1-2steve | 148323
Billingclerk, Hi! My name is Steve. In reference to your question I would suggest a commentary that is not too technical for you. The Expositor's Bible Commentary Abridged Edition is a good one. The Bible Knowledge Commentary. And the NIV Commentary on the Bible (2volumes). Obviously you have a computer so I wouldn't waste my money buying any books that are "public domain", i.e. Matthew Henry Commentary, Albert Barnes Notes on the Bible etc. You can simply go to e-sword.net/downloads and see all the different things you can download for free! You may also want to invest in a good word study dictionary like; The New International Dictionary of N.T. Theology. This uses GK numbers but in the back of the book, you can find the number chart thar references the two. I hope this will help you. But before you buy, take a good look at them first. You can go to amazon.com and type them up in a search engine, and some (not all) of them will allow you to glance at a few pages to help you decide. Have fun digging deeper into God's precious word! In Christ, steve P.S. If you like to study on the computer you'll really want to invest in the "Zondervan Bible Study Library 5.0 Leader's Edition" cd. It will run about 60.00 on amazon.com, but about 100 dollars at your local Christian bookstore. This is "well" worth the investment. |

6 | how do i regain my wifes trust and love | Bible general Archive 2 | 1-2steve | 148324
Hi jcjmca6, Hi! I'm Steve. I only hope I can help. I first don't know what happened but if you were the one who messed up I would tell you that you're going to have to prove your love for her by showing her that you are dedicated to her.She is going to want evidence that your heart/mind has truly changed. Unfortunately, this will take time. Is she, and are you willing to go to counciling? That's my recommendation. And if it's not too much to ask, could we get a first name only, just so we can pray for you? In Christ, steve jones |

7 | is gambling a sin | Bible general Archive 2 | 1-2steve | 148332
Hi dltlshines, I'm getting a little tired so forgive me for not having a Scripture (if there is one available. Maybe in Proverbs somewhere), but I do know that we are not to put our trust in uncertain riches, but to put our trust in the Lord. God did say that by the sweat of your brow you will eat bread, till you return to the ground. This is (I believe) one of those issues that may not have a whole lot of Scriptural support, so you have to look at the principals of God's word. I'm almost certain about this, but if I'm wrong, someone please correct me. I do hope this helps. In Christ, steve |

Searcher, No one has shared any "rules" with me. I offered him to go to counciling, not to me. But I can relate. I'm sorry if I offended anyone. I was just under the impression that Christians don't turn their back on someone in need. (well, sorry you're hungry, go eat that rock over there!). I'm not directing that your way at all, so please don't think I am. It just really concerns me when we have to turn our backs on someone because of some rules. I am NOT a counselor by any stretch of the imagination (which is why I encouraged him to seek counseling), but could you imagine what he might have thought of Christians if he got such cold responses (just go away, we can't talk to you)? 11 | WHAT DOES 2PETER1:4 MEAN AND IS THERE A | Gen 1:26 | 1-2steve | 148394
FUTURES' How fitting a mame concidering the reference to 2 Pet.1:4.:) I'm just simply gonna quote my commentary on this one. "Through these" refers to God's "glory and goodness" or more generally to His salvation mediated through the Incarnation. So when Christ came at His 1st advent, God made certain promises (very great and precious) of the Messianic Age (3:9, 13) to be brought in when Christ returned. These promises enable Christians to "participate in the divine nature". How does this participation come about? In at least 2 ways: 1) The promises themselves have a purifying effect on a believers life (1 John 3:3). 2)Conversion entails a definite break with "the corruption...caused by evil desires". In coming to know God through Christ, believers escape the corruption of sin; and Christ renews and restores the image of God in them. (Expositor's Bible Commentary). Do you see why I said that your name was so fitting?:) In Christ, steve |

12 | CLARIFICATION of Gen. 1:26 | Gen 1:26 | 1-2steve | 148395
Tamed, Hi! The reason God said "let us" is because of the name referenced to God in this passage. The Hebrew word is Elohim. It's a plural word that means "gods", but specifically used of the supreme "God" (this can get really deep, so I'll leave it alone for now). So God the Father was actually having fellowship with His Son before the creation of the world! Also, the gospel of John tells us that "all things were made by Him (Jesus). Also Heb. 1:2; 1 Cor. 8:6 (according to this Scripture, the world was created "by" Jesus, and was created "for" the Father)?; and the best one of all (in my eyes) is Col. 1:16. Hope this will help.:) In Christ, steve |

20 | What was in the cup symbolically? | Mark | 1-2steve | 148182
Hi, Phyllis and/or Doc, I went to Matt.26:39 and copied just about a paragraph of what John Gill's commentary says. It's interesting that he uses both wrath and fury inclusive in this cup. Here's what he stated: "If it be possible, let this cup pass from me; meaning not only the hour, as it is called in Mark, the present season and time of distress, and horror; but all his future sufferings and death, which were at hand; together with the bearing the sins of his people, the enduring the curse of the law, and the wrath of God, all which were ingredients in, and made up this dreadful bitter cup, this cup of fury". But, (and I may be wrong) the cup represents the coming death that He knew was coming. The Expositors Bible Commentary states that the word "cup" (GK 4539) is regularly used as a metaphor of punishment and judgement (and they used all 5 references you gave.),and that Jesus prayed that God's wrath would be removed. But of course we all know the end result. He died. So He drank the cup of wrath that we deserve, so that we won't have to face eternal judgement. But like I said, I may be wrong. Acts 17:11. I don't know if this helps or created confusion, but it is a good question and discussion. Thanks for letting me partake in it! In Christ, steve |
