Hi, God's Girl... Welcome to the forum! That's a good question. Some of what we see in the Scripture might be open to interpretation. I have seen some good arguments that human beings can be divided into three components (this is called a trichotomy): body, soul, and spirit. Others argue that humans are composed of two parts (this is called a dichotomy): body and spirit (cf Psalm 42:6; Matthew 20:28). Some passages seem to set spirit and soul as differing components (cf Hebrews 4:12; 1 Thessalonians 5:22). For completeness sake there are some people -- sorry, I don't have the percentages! -- who deny that man has any components at all (this position is called modalism) -- but I don't think that Scripture supports this perspective at all. The trichotomy view is certainly in keeping with Greek thinking. Nonetheless, there appears to be a distinction in Hebrew, as well. Consequently, we should not be surprised to see some of these perspectives coloring the language of Scripture based on the cultural/historical context of the peoples to whom the particular writings were addressed. To make a quicker answer to your question: the soul could simply be life -- which is what the Hebrew implies. On the other hand, the soul might well be the seat of the emotions and thought. Of course, like any effort to divide and categorize, I think it is important to use caution. Even with introspection we cannot distinguish where our bodies end and our minds begin. Perhaps that is even the point of Hebrews 4:12 (see post #196995) -- what can cut so precisely as to divide soul from spirit? Nothing but the Word! In Him, Doc |

Paul teacheS IN 1 Corinthians 15:35-55 that we have two bodies a heavenly body which is spirit and an earthly body which is flesh, our inner body or spiritual body,When we die the inner or spiritual body goes back to GOD who gave it,and the flesh goes back to dust That it cane from. Ecclesiastes 12:6,7; 2 Corinthians.5:8 to be absent from this body (flesh) IS TO BE PRESENT WITH THE LORD. (spirit) Whatever form we are in the spiritual body stays with us. so it would be safe to say That our spiritual body or inner body would be our soul.

Hi, Escar... That would not be a common interpretation of that passage in 1 Corinthians 15. After all, Paul is talking about the resurrection in that context. Human existence between death and resurrection is an abnormal condition, called by theologians the interim state. Man was created to be a living, physical human being, functioning in time and space. All man will be be so in eternity, whether the elect or reprobate; although the elect will be living upon the new earth. Relative to 1 Corinthians 5:8, Paul uses an idiomatic phrase "in the body" to mean "while living;" i.e., our life now before we die. In Him, Doc |

My point is that the 42 Hebrew translation of breath has to do with the spirit and the soul just as 1 CORIN. 15:35 Is teaching that we have two bodies and flesh and blood cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven AND AT THE TWINKLE OF AN EYE AT THE LAST TRUMP (THE SEVENTH NOT BEFORE)SHALL SOUNDS AND GOES ON TO TELL THAT THIS MORTAL MUST PUT ON IMMORTALITY, and when GOD IS SPEAKING OF HIS CHILDREN IN THE OLD TESTAMENT HE REFERS THEM TO SOULS SO EITHER WAY FLESH OR SPIRIT SOUL WOULD BE SELF.
