1 | Question regarding father's role. | Bible general Archive 3 | pax_rock2004 | 175445
I'd like to throw this question out to those more versed in the Scriptures than myself. Is there anywhere in the Bible that says that the father (or parents)is(are)the head of the child? I've never found it and from my understanding of what headship is it seems that the use of the term wouldn't quite fit. If anyone knows if it is anywhere in there could you let me know?

I don't know of any place that says this. However, there are a few things that should be considered. First of all, children are commanded to "obey" their parents. This infers that both parents have authority over the child. It should be noted, though, that the word here is "child" and not "son" or "daughter". Sons and daughters, while they are children, are subject to the authority of their parents and are commanded to obey them. However, when those sons and daugthers enter adulthood, they are no longer subject to that command. Even then, though, one of the 10 commandments in Exodus 20 is to "honor" your parents, irrespective of what age you happen to be. Father and mothers are never given any such command with regard to their children, except the command to fathers to "not embitter their children." |

3 | Question regarding father's role. | Bible general Archive 3 | pax_rock2004 | 175460
I think I need to explain my question here alittle more. I've studied out a bit what headship means and here is a little of what I've discovered. The greek word that is typically translated as head, when looked at elsewhere, is rarely stated as meaning athority. In fact, the word most often means literally the head of a body. 1 Corinthians 11:3 "Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God." In this passage Paul is painting a visual picture of marrage. He is trying to convey that much in the same way that God is the head of Christ and are together one unified God a man and a woman become one in marrage: Genesis 2:24 "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh." So as you see, I wasn't suggesting that fathers are not to be obeyed by children. I was seeing if this treatment of the word head actually fit in this context. |
