EHOHOM1, welcome to the forum! Interpretation always begins with what the author intended it to mean at the time that a document was written and how the intended audience of that document understood its message. This is what is called exegesis. Once this is understood, then it is possible to make application to our lives. This is, broadly, called hermeneutics. The Bible only says what it always has said and always will say. Nevertheless, there are many applications. Chapter 4 of Romans is Paul's answer to the question, "How was Abraham saved?" The answer is that he was saved in the same way that anyone is ever saved. Did you want to get into further particulars? In Him, Doc |

I hope this complements what is being asked and answered. If the question is Does the law exist, yes, but it was done away with once Jesus came and he replaced the Law with grace. Why? Because of the following. Romans 3:20 - Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. Then we should do what in place of justifying ourselves in the law. Consider the following Galatians 3:24 - Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. Galatians 3:25 - But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. We shall serve Christ out of faith, love , and gratefullness. Hope this helped. |

Are you saying we can disobey the OT Law? I don't see Jesus doing away with the Law in the verses you cited. |

Jesus did not come to do away with the Law but to fulfill it. I personally think that many of the laws went with the customs of that day, but the ten commandments are laws written in stone by the hand of God and should always be kept as a base of Christian beliefs even though they came about in the old testament. |

We required to walk in obedience to the Law as a matter of faith not to gain salvation. If you walk in obedience you are a living witness to the rightousness of the Law and the Glory of God. Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.2 Corinthians 5:7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments. John 15:10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. The sacrifical laws were done away with and we have nothing further to do with them. Hebrews 10:4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. We cannot keep the letter the law because we are carnal and not spiritual Romans 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. With the help of the Holy Spirit we do these best we can and endeavor to follow in the footsteps of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 2:21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: 1John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. Hebrews 10:26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, Proverbs 28:9 He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination. Psalm 19:7-11 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.:8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.:10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.:11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward. |

Hi there, Henier, welcome to the forum! Thank you for the passages, great stuff! You wrote, "The sacrifical laws were done away with and we have nothing further to do with them." The old divines separated the law into ceremonial and moral parts. The moral law still teaches us about the righteousness of our Father and about our own fallen nature. Further, the old time theologians would not have said that the ceremonial law was "done away with" but rather that those laws were a picture of things to come. Now that picture has been replaced by the reality, who needs the picture any more? (See Hebrews 10:1.) :-) Aren't you glad that part of our birthright is power over sin by the Holy Spirit (a la Romans 8)? I hope that you will continue to post! In Him, Doc |
