A pastor is also called a Shepherd. Here is the biblical duties of a shepherd. You then need to ask yourself is our pastor meeting these. • One who cares for flocks. Genesis 31:38-40; Psalm 78:52-53; Jeremiah 31:10; Amos 3:12; Luke 2:8 • As David, defends his flock against a lion and a bear. 1 Samuel 17:34-35 • Causes the flock to rest. Psalm 23:2; Song 1:7; Jeremiah 33:12 • Numbers the flock. Leviticus 27:32; Jeremiah 33:13 • Knows his flock by name. John 10:3-5 • Keeps the sheep and goats apart. Matthew 25:32 • Waters the flocks. Genesis 29:2-10 • Keeps the flocks in folds. Numbers 32:16; 1 Samuel 24:3; 2 Samuel 7:8; John 10:1 Jesus told Peter to feed the sheep. So a Pastor must also be feeding the sheep with the Living Word of God. I wonder how many pastors know their sheep by name. Most are lucky if they can recognize them as regular attenders. EdB |

Hebrews 13:17 says that pastors will give account to the Lord for their flock. I always think about that passage and wonder if I am treating the instruction of my pastor with that kind of seriousness. In my tradition, and this also seems to be consistent with scriptural injunctions, we say that the pastor has the authority to bind our conscience, but always and only with the Word. Ed, wouldn't the passages in 1 Timothy, 1 Peter, and Titus also be good ways to measure the quality of a pastor? |

Doc I look at 1 Timothy, 1 Peter, and Titus as perquisites that must be met for consideration to become a pastor. To me they are so fundamental I think any man not meeting those perquisites simply isn’t qualified. I assumed the question was talking about a man that met those qualifications and was looking for a scriptural basis to judge his performance now that he was a pastor. EdB |

WilBa,God bless you brother. I hear what you are saying. God has called all of us. He called us to be his sons and daughters. It was encumbent on us to answer that call. God calls all of our wives to be supportive. Obviously this poses a problem. Does this mean your Pastor cant minister, thats not for me to say. A couple of thoughts though. First, are the women in the church getting in there and working with the wife? And secondly what can you and the other brothers do to help and encourage your Pastor? My heart goes out to all of you and I will be praying for all of you. Please let me know if there is anything specific I can pray for. Your Brother in Christ: Lionheart |
