the problem with the study guide becoming so popular is that when you a have a bible study, everyone has these notes in the bible and therefore rather than thinking about the passage and context etc, read the study guide and give that answer. This leaves many people lacking in understanding and more likely to take on unbiblical views on christianity. I think it is much better to keep these separate, so people can first think and then consult the guide.

andrewj I agree except where do you think cults and all these denominations come from or some of the junk we see in the church today? It is from people deciding for themselves what the Bible says. Without proper systematic study some one can read a passage or two and go off into some of the most crazy doctrine. If you don't believe it, listen to Christian TV. In one day you will find one man teaching the exact opposite another taught and both will have a whole arsenal of verses to prove their point. Usually both are wrong and the truth lies somewhere between them. In the early church from the first through about the 5 century churchmen, scholars, theologians put together statements of faith, doctrines and creeds to define our faith. Since that time men have been trying to change them. Then during the Reformation which coincided with the “age of enlightenment” man had been deciding for himself what the Bible says and how that applies to his life. Today we see the hodge podge that man has cobbled together. Today we fight over how to baptize, salvation, and just about every aspect of Christianity while a lost and dying world watches shaking their heads saying “and they claim to have the answer!” Unless the Bible study your involved with is doing a intense inductive Bible study I would imagine they would benefit from a good reliable study Bible. Without it your nothing more than a group of people deciding what the Bible passage says and you may or may not get it right. EdB |

I understand and agree with what you are saying, usually with bible studies i have been involved in, one person has studied and prepared the study with the help of a study guide. This has helped with the forming of questions for the study to aid in the discussion of the group but also to help point towards the truth of the passage and the challenges it brings to our lives. Having a study guide/commentary near by for questions that can't be answered or to back up the truth is very helpful. I think this is a great way of getting people to think instead of just looking down at the study guide in their bibles and giving that answer, instead the passage has to be read and thought about. I think this is especially relevant for the younger generation.

AndrewJ We are in agreement. The study guide proves the checks and balances and diminishes my concern about going off into the wild blue yonder. EdB |
