Dear Bob: Oh my! The doctrines and teachings of Charles G. Finney, are where in lie many of the problems found in the modern Churches of today! Finny was a pure pragmatist, i.e. he seemed to think of religion as a business, he ran his church like a business; Finney preached and taught his students such as though faith was the doing of man. You might call him the father of, "Self Help" Theology. His teaching's were also "Man centered" and not, "God centered" in fact, it is difficult at best to find the gospel in his sermons. :-( You may find this series of articles informative and enlightening, and I hope you do, they are titled, "The Church In Crisis" these articles include as follows, ( The Cultural Chaos of the 1800's ) ( Man Becomes The Center of Faith ) ( Finney’s “Self-help” Theology ) ( New Measures and the Modern Church ) ( Lessons for the Church ) ( Implications for our Faith ) they can be found at this web-site: http://www.morethancake.org/2007/08/church-in-crisis-introduction.html they are highly recommended. I hope and pray that you read them! :-) God bless John |

Hi John, I quite agree... and then some! Phillip Johnson in his (aptly-titled) article, "A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing" says this, "It is ironic that Charles Grandison Finney has become a poster boy for so many modern evangelicals. His theology was far from evangelical. As a Christian leader, he was hardly the model of humility or spirituality. Even Finney's autobiography paints a questionable character. In his own retelling of his life's story, Finney comes across as stubborn, arrogant—and sometimes even a bit devious." Further, even a cursory reading of Finney's so-called 'Systematic Theology" should make one shudder and run! He was a heretic- plain and simple. The devastation he left still lingers! Thanks brother BradK I was only just introduced to him (Finney) last evening at the request of Bro. Bob's post. I didn't like much of what I read, so I did some further investigating. I liked what else I found even less. :-( The heart of fallen man loves pragmatism, we see things getting done, and in our impatience are drawn to this approach, even in our religion, and evangelism, not considering waiting for God to do things in His time. And that's just scratching the surface of the problem[s] with pragmatism. :-( Thanks again for your response brother BadK God bless John |
