Hi, Rod... Literacy in Hebrew has always been the foundation of Judaism. The text of the Bible connects Jews across culture and through time. More importantly, it connects the Jew with the very words of God. Being able to read Hebrew has always been the very first instruction to Jewish children. Although I would be surprised if it were universal in Christ's time, it was nevertheless common enough that a poor carpenter's son to have learned to read (Luke 4:16).
